House Stark: The Hidden Truth About Their Origin? - A Song of Ice and Fire (Theory)

  • Welcome back for another A Song of Ice and Fire Theory Video. Today I want to talk about the origins of House Stark and the Others, and why I think they are intertwined. According to Old Nan, the Night's King, who was the 13th Lord Commander of the Night's Watch, was a Stark of Winterfell. We have also heard about some of the Kings of Winter having eyes of ice. I am wondering if all of the current Starks are actually descendants of the Others in some way. We have been told that Winterfell was built directly after the Long Night ended, but can we trust the timeline? I also think the Night's King could be down in the lowest levels of the Crypts of Winterfell. Something is hiding down there, and it most likely has something to do with the Others. Let me know what you think. Thanks for watching the video!

    "There must always be a Stark in Winterfell" - Taking into account in which contexts was "winter fell" used in stories, I think over time they started to interpret it wrong as if a Stark needs to always be physically in the castle. I think it means that when the winter falls, the long night comes, there must be a Stark in the battle against the others. It actually backs up your video and what you are saying but with this thought having in mind it just makes it more valid.

    Oh fun-fact for you: "Winterfell" is actually a word in German, written exactly like that. I translates as "Winter Fur/Coat/Pelt" animals get in the cold months of the year. So for me as a German reader, I wouldn't read it like "Winter falls/fell" but like "Winter-Fur", which is fitting as well to me, also because of the Wolves etc. ^^

  • @shakeyguinevereblanacruell6246

    I believe the reason there must always be a Stark in Winterfell is because of the Kings in the Crypt. Think about it, a spell especially a blood spell can only be as effective as it is cast if the blood line that casts it remains bound to the property. The binding of these Kings would have to be 3 fold. First of blood, then iron then earth. The first being the strongest way to keep them in check the second and third simply to bind. You do not bind a captive with a single or double cord rope or chain but a 3 fold rope or chain. The first being blood would link to the ways of the Old Gods, the second is the means by which they were captured and the third would be what is being protected.

    Remember Hodor took an iron sword from the crypts before they left Winterfell. I wonder whose sword he took? Meera took Rickard's sword. Bran took Brandon's. It doesn't say whose sword it belonged too. Could this be important? Hodor might have released a bad spirit of the Starks.

      It was also mentioned that the oldest iron swords had long since rusted into just a red stain on the statues, which could explain why the Others have made a return after so long. Their spirits had been released when the iron swords were no longer there to contain them.

    • @Richard_Nickerson
      @Richard_Nickerson Před 5 lety +3

      If he got his sword from the same general area as the others got theirs, then it would probably be Bran's great-grandfather. Between location in the pitch black and the fact that the older swords were literally rusting away into nothing, it would have to be one of Bran's more recent relatives. Therefore, it wouldn't be one of these evil White Walker spirits, which I dismiss as ridiculous in the first place.

    here's my theory: The White Walkers/Others are actually all Starks that were loyal to the 13th Lord Commander and the ones in Winterfell are the descents of ones that refused to side with him. Everything with the White Walkers is either a big Stark family feud from ancient times or the 13th Lord commander has been imprisoned in Winterfell all this time and the white walkers are coming to free him.

      Even from the Stark stories in the books, we could all tell that the Starks have always had a cold stoic streak about them.

      They have always been known for cruel efficiency.

      bootzy wootzy The Valyrian steel sword Ice was only about 400-500 years old. It was a replacement for the original Ice, which dated back to the Age of Heroes. That Ice was likely hidden in the Crypts during the Conquest to avoid the possibility of it being confiscated for the Iron Throne, incase the Starks fell to the Aegon’s forces. Of course, Torrhen ultimately decided against fighting Aegon.

    I’m starting to get the feeling that we may not learn all of this by the end of season 8 but this makes total sense. The Stark’s very clearly have some deep connection to winter as they often say, “winter is coming,” whenever they attack someone as if the Stark’s are the personification of winter. Then you have the Others which are very clearly the true personification of winter. As when they come, the worst of winter also actually comes. The Stark’s are often a metaphor for the White Walkers which are themselves a metaphor for winter. And I think there is a deeper reason for this than we realize. Perhaps we will learn much of this on Sunday!

    I believe the Night Queen was captured and imprisoned by the Starks of old in the tombs, more like a hostage. The others agreed to peace conditions such that she will be freed when the next winter comes (and Starks always remind themselves of the coming of winter). All this was done in the face of a situation where the Others would wipe out the entire realm, but the NK, bound by the love to his Queen decides to honor the request of men. As an alternative to continuing their line, they also demanded the male baby sacrifices -- a practice we seem to see occurring only north of the wall. But the Starks forgot. The NQ was not freed when promised, and the sacrifices were declining until they stopped eventualy. Maybe most of the wildlings are descendands of the people living north of the wall, the ones who had to supply the babies to the NK, but failed to do so and formed tribes instead. And, here he is, the NK comes to seek the end of the deal. This is in par with @Oracle of Raelor 's oppinion below

We know the NK is prescient somehow (that journey north to get a wight was a clear setup, perhaps the NK sent a vision to the Hound) and the NK was able to kill and turn a dragon into a WW (not a wight) and that magic combination was enough to bring down the wall. Would Jon have any special abilities if he'd been turned into WW after the battle up north? He can survive icy water, and it could be due to his combo Targaryen/Stark blood. Maybe that's why the NK has never tried to capture and turn him. He had plenty of opportunities and his WW didn't stab Jon when he had the chance.

    Wow! One of your best breakdowns. I see you, TThrones, you’re doing the damn-thing. 🔥 You seem to be getting better and better’er. (Yep, BETTER’ER) Great job. 👍 I’ve read you being compared to other CZcamsr’s which drives home my point. There is no need to “Dis” another CZcamsr as The Universe has enough room for EVERYONE. No need for competition. Your style of delivery is obviously different from others, but guess what, it works, because you ARE different. I have to be honest, It took me a second to get use to you (Subscribe) because I was so use to a different CZcamsr/s and how they choose to deliver their stories. Case and point, I’m glad I did give you a chance or I’d be missing out on some really good commentary. Keep up the good work. It takes a lot of time and research to do what you and you ARE appreciated. Thank you. 🙏

    There must be something significant with the name Winterfell, probably staring us right in the face and so obvious that were overlooking it, there is an old word " fell " when used after the name of a place that comes from the Norse word " fjall " which roughly means an area of high ground like a moor covered hill. which describes Winterfell's location perfectly, and those kind of location's historically were used as defensive positions

    Winds HOWLING (like wolves) from the north, as WINTERFELL..Solid clues about Starks being night kings. ..kings of winter...night kings! Agreed 100% about 13th LC put in the crypts Ygritte said, "Jon Snow, ahh, an evil name, and shuddered". One also shudders when icy cold. I think those lower level tombs in the crypts where the iron swords have rusted away (according to Theon in books ) are where some of the whitewalkers have escaped. If 1 was 13th LC/nightking they could pass through the weirwood door under the night fort by him speaking his nights watch vow. QOT.🌹

About the eyes as blue as ice, don't you think it's interesting that part of the Westerosi burial practice is to put stones painted with blue eyes on top of the eyes of the deceased? I think this could be important too. Maybe it's a long forgotten symbolic way of preventing the deceased from turning into a WW? Perhaps part of an old spell?

    This Others/Stark relationship might be one of the reasons behind the others actually marching down south. "A single family ruling over the north for 8 millenia with an unbroken male line"; "There must always be a Stark in Winterfell". Maybe after Ned went South with Robert something was disturbed and the others were pissed off. In my opinion, the Starks are 'magically' the defenders of the north, and the more of them dying, the stronger the others become. Once Ned is killed and Ice is 'destroyed', that could be the incentive for the walkers to pack up and start the invasion. The only living Starks are Jon, Bran, Sansa and Arya. Bran is the three-eyed raven now, Arya is no one, Sansa is a Lannister/Bolton even though there's Stark blood in her (plus she was very enthusiastic about leaving Winterfell), so that leaves Jon the only Stark and the last line of defense against the dead. In another of your videos, you spoke about a special way to kill the Night King since he created all of the other walkers. Maybe the weapon has to be valyrian steel/dragon glass but it has to be wielded by a Stark in order for the impact to matter (just a hunch, not necessarily true). Just thoughts, however.

    My theory is that the current Night's King is actually Bran The Builder, and that explains his methodical approach to invading Westeros. Knowing the weaknesses of The Wall as only the one who built it would know. Launching a single spear to kill (and then claim) a dragon seems like he didn't just come up with that idea in the spur of the moment...
    Mr. Frosty has been chillin' and plotting this out for a minute. He knows what to do and exactly how to do it.

    I'm re-watching Game of Thrones again at the moment and I have a question- do you think that there could be some deaths foreshadowed in S8 from the way those people have killed others in the past? For example, Roose stabbed Robb in the stomach - Roose dies by being stabbed in the stomach.. Ramsey killed Lady Walder and the baby by using the hounds and then he dies by the hounds.. Could this be a hint as to what S8 could hold? Maybe Shireens death could foreshadow Melissandre's.. Just a thought, would love to know your opinion

    Theory: You closed the video with one of the family's credo's, "there must always be a Stark in Winter fell". But what if this: there currently ISN'T a Stark in Winterfell. Not officially. They all have Stark blood, sure, but Jon is a legitimate Tagaryen, not a Stark. Sansa could be considered a Lannister or a Bolton. Arya has disavowed her name countless times to become "no one", and Bran himself said that he's not Bran Stark anymore.
    Maybe, the Night King is growing so powerful because the Stark family finally crumbled and essentially broke their end of the deal?

  • @Kathyyyta
    @Kathyyyta Před 5 lety +3

    I´m gonna say this first, I haven´t read the books, but i have been watching your videos and my theory is that the stark are descendants of the others, they made a pact to keep winter in the further north and the kept watch over the north, wich is why there´s always a stark in the Wall and in winterfell, the stark as a family are beings of winter which is why Ned fells so hot on the south and i belive that winter fell when the starks where not in power, because there must always be a stark in charge of the north if not the others come and make it so.
    So yeah i belive the Starks and the others bound the family blood to the others and as the Starks where forebode to be in danger in the very first chapter of the books, we get the white walkers bringing winter to right the wrongs, another reason i belive this is the family motto "Winter is coming" it is always said as a promise and a reminder to themselfs and their enemies, if they fall winter fell too and the white walkers come and with them winter. And thanks to your teories i belive that the old blood makes the Starks come back as walkers in their death wich is why they are trapped there waiting to fight if there is no Stark on winterfell.
    I hope it is comprehensible, english is not my first lenguage.
    This could just be my lack of sleep and overacting imagination :)
