Bloodraven: The Targaryen Who Caused The Song of Ice and Fire

  • In the Game of Thrones books, prophecy and magic are like swords without hilts. They're dangerous and unpredictable, but one such prophecy, Aegon's dream about the Long Night, has been confirmed to actually exist. Aegon was right, and the Long Night did fall over Westeros again. But the hero to put an end to the Long Night, Azor Ahai or The Prince That Was Promised, was no sure thing to Aegon's successors. In this video, I discuss a theory that Bloodraven, one of Aegon the Unworthy's bastards, not only knew about Aegon the Conqueror's dream, but manipulated the royal line of House Targaryen to result in a prophesied hero: Jon Snow. Or Daenerys?

      Who is the villain and who is the hero is a matter of perspective. Blood Raven did not aspire for the throne, he killed his brother but his brother was trying to take over the realm illegally, so that means he was also loyal to the crown, in the long run he fought against the night King and trained Bran to fight against the night King.

      I think we’re gonna get some of our answers in the Jon Snow show. I think Jon is gonna discover Dark Sister in Bloodraven’s cave in the far North. Arya will discover the prophecy on the dagger and return it to Jon. Somewhere along the way, she will lose or break Needle. So Jon being the coolest big brother in the show/books will replace his favorite sister’s first gift from him with a new Valyrian steel sword that’s aptly named Dark Sister. Arya is meant to wield that sword. Plus it’s not a great sword or bastard blade. Just a standard long sword (smaller than the others). Perfect for Arya.

    Given how Bran Stark turns out, I feel like Bloodraven left his responsibility to a straight-up creep. Also, Jon Snow was meant to kill Daenarys. But not at King's Landing, after she had gone insane, and killed thousands of people for no good reason. Rather, he was supposed to kill her as the only means to stop The Long Winter from coming again, during the fight with the Wight Walkers.
    But the show, as we all know now, was completely bastardized by two lazy dingos, who just wanted to move on to other creative things rather than end the show the way that it was supposed to end. They could have easily dedicated 2 or 3 more seasons to the "War of Winter" plotline, but they didn't care. They had George RR Martin's outline for how the books would end, and basically took the laziest possible route to writing out that conclusion.
    George RR Martin, I think, realizes this mistake, and is desperately trying to fix his books, so that they don't end up the same way that the show did, because he's seen how the fans reacted to the show. That's why I think "The Winds of Winter" is taking forever to get to us.

    Azor Ahai is most likely to be Daenerys as she brought dragons back into existence and quite literally paralleled Azor Ahai with Nissa Nissa (Drogo is Nissa and Drogon is lightbringer). Her brother believed his seed with a Stark girl would create the prophesized prince but it’s clear if you look through the text who the song is about. The first book begins with the Others (the Ice) and ends with Dany and the birth of her dragons (Fire). The Azor Ahai prophecy is also Essosi, not Westerosi. Dany’s entire arc so far has been rooted in Essosi culture. Plus, you can’t get much more ironic than having Daenerys complete the prophecy in book one before it was ever mentioned by Melisandre in book 3 (i believe). It just makes the most sense while also subverting expectations because everyone thinks it’s Jon.

    I mean, for real, wouldn't he be able to make sure Rhaegar and then his kids and all that were still born with the proper eugenics he had planned? Why kill off the rest of the family and endanger their house in such a way?.
    If "The Ends justify the Means", then well, the Ends must not be all that important cause I'd rather more Targaryens and Dragons around than not. If he was behind Dany managing to figure out the Dragon-hatching recipe, well... why not still do that with her or another Targaryen with more around, and maybe look for Stone Dragon Eggs on Dragonstone, cause I'm sure there's at least a few there

      Yeah I doubt (and hope not) that Bloodraven had anything to do with Dany’s eggs. Like I said in the video, he’s not a complete puppet master. Regarding Rhaegar, Bloodraven (while still Hand of the King) would have seen Aegon V as the best chance to infuse the royal line with northern DNA since Egg already fell in love with Betha Blackwood. Bloodraven had no way of knowing when exactly the Long Night would fall, so best to put all his eggs into Egg’s basket while he could rather than wait and try to manipulate Egg’s kids.
      Who knows, though. Lots of possibilities, which is why I love the asoiaf world so much. Bloodraven could be responsible for all of it, or none of it, or some of it. Theorizing just makes it better.

Plus Egg probably caused it, there is a lot of mystery about what happemed at Summerhaul, it was kept hush hush. We know wildfire was involved and Duncan had a dream about Egg and him drowning in sand which convienently enough is the safety measure in Kingslanding against wildfire. Also I suspect when Aemon said better men than Stannis have done far worse he was reffering to Aegon aka Egg. Bloodraven has pretty much only been shown protecting the Targaryens and in his eyes the realm, saying himself before he was exiled that he sacrificed his honour to do so.

      In the books as opposed to the show, could Young Griff be Dany’s final target and reason for torching KL instead of Cersei? And since we assume he may actually be a Blackfyre (we know Bloodraven hates them), could Bloodraven be the reason for Dany’s descent into madness and he manipulates her to destroy Young Griff and KL instead of just “the bells”? Maybe he’s gonna give her dragon dreams that pushes her to insanity, forcing Jon to kill her, and thus clearing the way for him to assume the throne through Bran. BR (through manipulation of Euron, Bran, & Dany) may actually be the primary villain of this story. And a Time for Wolves is gonna tell the story of how the Starks (Jon will have to choose between Stark & Targ) will have to unite to stop this rogue Targaryen sorcere who has skin changed into their brother Bran.

    That was the ending that GRRM told to D&D just that they didn't know how to pull that off and that's why Bran end up like the ultimate "ruler" of Westeros.

      According to showrunner Ryan Condal, Aegon only imbued the Valyrian glyphs into the steel. He didn’t forge the dagger itself. From my perspective, Bloodraven doesn't even look evil. Good vs evil is more relative than good vs bad: it depends on circumstances, the moral norms of society etc. And here we are talking about men, who grew and lived in a world, where people were murdering each other in hundreds and thousands for greed, power, passions and just pleasure. Bloodraven, at least, had a good reasons (at least from his perspective) and confined himself to members of certain family. It also looks like he viewed Targaryens not as rulers by some divine right, but more as servants of humanity: their job is what matters, not their lives. And he lived by the same rules, I think that his cruelty to himself by far surpassed his cruelty to others.

    I surprise you don't mention the possibility of Sheira Seastar working with Blood Raven. If she is Quaithe, then she at some point got her hands on a glass candle and it wouldn't be beyond her ability to use the glass candle to enter the thoughts and dreams of others. She could've easily drove Aerion mad and caused him to think drinking wildfire will make him a dragon and she could've done something to Rhaegel to make him eat and choke on pie.

  • @Hellsing7747
    @Hellsing7747 Před měsícem +1

    So, to make the prophecy happen, you actually need to work for it to happen . I'm wondering if Bloodraven thought that it could be possible by his actions "the prince who was promised" might never be able to exist. It might turn out that because of bloodraven, there is no" prince that was promised" or instead a few of them. For all we know, Aegon Targaryen aka Young Griff, Daenerys and Jon could all of them be the prince of the prophecy.

  • @isaiahjackson8416
    @isaiahjackson8416 Před 12 dny

    I like the idea that the three heads of the dragon are/will be Dany, Jon, and Aegon. I've always wondered if Dany's dragon's names are intentionally similar to the names of the three conquerors. Rhaegal = Rhaenys, Drogon = Aegon, and Viserion = Visenya. If so then Dany being the rider of Drogon would point to her being Aegon reborn, and depending on which dragons Jon and Aegon claim they would be the second comings of Visenya and Rhaenys.
    Though it is confusing which dragon is meant to be which sister. If you go by names then it's obvious, but if you consider Visenya and Rhaenys' own dragons colourations it's the opposite, Viserion is a cream and gold dragon, but Visenya had a green dragon, and Rhaenys' dragon was silver with gold eyes, whereas Rhaegal is Green. Perhaps, if this is even a possible theory, it is meant to be muddy.
    Aegon has been raised from birth to be a good king. His nature does not seem to be close to that of Visenya's, as the story is now. This could of course change, but if we consider Jon's less honorable actions near the end of the currently released books, him dying and potentially being revived could result in him becoming crueller or more hardened, and the possibility that Bran could bring him Dark Sister, Visenya's sword, then perhaps he is Visenya reborn and Aegon is Rhaenys.
    That makes me wonder who in this scenario is Azor Ahai and who could be Nissa Nissa. Personally I don't think Aegon is either. If he is supposed to represent Rhaenys then he would be the first to die alongside his dragon. And whilst most assume that Aegon reborn will be Azor Ahai, and I personally prefer Dany as TPTWP, could it be that Visenya, aka Jon, is AA and Aegon, aka Dany, is Nissa Nissa? You point out in this video that the OG Azor Ahai is painted as honorable for his sacrificeing Nissa Nissa, but really is it not NN, who chose to sacrifice herself, true "hero" of the story?
    Anyways basically I believe that Aegon (son of Rhaegar) is Rhaenys, Dany is Aegon (the conqeror) and Jon is Visenya, and that Jon and Dany have a 50/50 chance of being AA or NN, if this theory has any weight to it. But I could be discounted Aegon a lil cause he a) might be a Blackfyre, and b) I have consumed less media about him then I have Jon and Dany. It would be very ironic if he turned out to be TPTWP.

    There's no way GRRM is going to justify Bloodraven's heinous actions. Bloodraven likely more or less created the monster that Euron Greyjoy became by diving into the dreams of thousands of children to find greenseers and Euron is going to perform massive blood sacrifice to become a Lovecraftian god in Winds.
    You cannot know that the good ends you intend are going to happen when you commit to evil means. Bloodraven destroyed the minds of thousands of children (Bran sees the skeletons of thousands of dead dreamers in his dreams), killed his own family almost to extinction, and manipulated the lives of countless people with his spying all to save the world. All of that only for one of the kids he manipulated to go absolutely insane and cause a completely different apocalypse that nobody expected.
