      Of course, Sam Gagner scoring 8 points in one game tying the record for most points in a game! That’s a pretty absurd record if I say so myself! It was pretty humiliating for the Blackhawks to go through that embarrassing 8-4 loss!

    Dave Elenbaas, a backup goalie for the Habs in the 1970's.
    He has a fighting major without playing in the game. You can't find stats about it, because he dressed for 29 games I think, but never played a minute in the NHL. He can't have any statistics, cause he never played a game.
    But technically his only NHL stat is 5 minute major.

    Should be noted that Kevin Bieksa took the face-off in place of Kellan Lain. Lain was playing in his first NHL game, and, knowing what was coming, Bieksa stepped up in an attempt to prevent Lain from fighting on his first shift. Obviously that didn't happen, and Lain ended up getting tossed for the rest of the game. Lain's parents and brother were also in attendance that night. Unfortunate way to start off, but a good story nonetheless.

    C"mon, don't forget Guy Charron. I guess most fans are too young to remember, but I saw him play. He was a very good player in the 70's. Played over 700 NHL games and never got into the playoffs. Not one playoff game. That shows what happened if you played in the 70's mostly for Detroit & Washington. Sad thing is he originally came up with Montreal, and if he hadn't been traded and had spent the same career with the Canadiens as he played in the NHL, he would have won 6 Stanley Cups. Jay Bouwmeester also played about 10 years in the league before finally getting into the playoffs, but like Ron Hainsey, eventually got to win a Stanley Cup.

    I think +/- is useful for looking for defensemen. You can look at the line that defender plays on and see how many goals that line has scored. If that player has a good plus minus as a defender, it likely means they are good at keeping the puck out of their goalie's net, meaning they might be a good defender. If they have a bad plus minus, they might not be great.

    • @Jeneric81
      @Jeneric81 Před rokem +1

      That depends. If you’re the best defensive defenseman, you’re likely to get matched more against the top offensive scorers, this will skew your +/- to a lower figure.

  • @pauljensen9678
    @pauljensen9678 Před 2 lety +1

    I certainly get the argument regarding the value of plus/minus, but this humiliating record is worth mentioning. The 1974-75 Washington Capitals had 13 players who finished at -40 or worse, including Defenseman Bill Mikkelson who was a stunning -82 in just 59 games. Mikkelson was also a pathetic -146 in 146 career games until he was called up by the Caps in 1977 to play his first NHL game in over 2 years. In that match, which would be the last of his career, Bill was even to finish his NHL days a sliver under his -1 per game ratio at -146 in 147 games.

    How did you leave out Kellan Lain?!? Fastest fight/ejection to start an NHL career, and it was the same game that Torts stormed the Flames dressing room! In fact, the only reason Bieksa was taking that draw was because he saw Lain lined up against Westgarth, knew what was about to go down, and switched places with him so that he didn't have to start his NHL career with a fight. Unfortunately it immediately turned into a line brawl anyway, and Lain was ejected just 0:02 into his first game. His parents flew out from Ontario to watch his debut, and he was ejected off the opening face-off. Absolutely brutal.

    7:10 Didn't he hit it above the crossbar? Isn't that disallowed or is that only if you are doing it into the opposing goalie's net?

    • @mikefurlong8025
      @mikefurlong8025 Před 2 lety

      Correct- it's only illegal to score in your opponents net with a stick above the crossbar. However, if the puck had been above his shoulder and he played it, it would have been high sticking, and disallowed. It's a fine line sometimes.

    The better record for Hainsey was he played that many games and seasons without losing a playoff series (as of winning the cup). That absolutely has to be a record.

    I would argue +/- is even more valuable today given the low scoring totals of even the best players in the league. It gives a macro into who is a liability on the ice and who pays both ends.

    The New Jersey vs Ottawa game. Having the puck go off your glove and in the net isn’t an own goal. That’s a deflection you have to direct the puck into the net for an own goal.
