Sassuolo are progressively becoming one of the most entertaining sides to watch in Italian football. Roberto De Zerbi is building a team that is attractive and effective.
So why do his critics say it’s all style and no substance?
Who does he have in his team that allows Sassuolo to play this way?
Will Sassuolo become everyone’s favourite alternative Italian side, after Atalanta?
    Alex Stewart explains.

I love that you talk about Italy. For who doesn't know, both these teams (Sassuolo and Atalanta) come from very small towns and their presidents and societies are very engaged and smart. No sheiks nor Chinese enterpreneurs, no oil money and no big expenses, just the right coach and long term projects.

Its impressive how Sassuolo was expected to finish lower half of table in all of the seasons since De Zerbi has taken over and yet they have managed to exceed expectations every seasons.. Now that I look at De Zerbi's whole managerial career, he has exceeded expectations with every team he has managed (even with palermo and benevento). He started at foggia and impressed everyone with style and his man management and smart signings, then moved to palermo where they say he was awful but looking at that side, i realise that they were always destined to go down and he still managed to get a few impressive results, then at benevento it was same except everyone appreciated the style of play and his impressive draw against naples, so, sassuolo picked him and since then he has impressed every season with his tactics, style and every aspect of football management. He has grown into a more matured and complete manager in these few years. Improved tactically, philosophically and every other aspect. I have grown to like him and I am really looking forward to see him at a bigger club.

He was not better than Bakayoko and Kessie, or even Biglia at that time and wanted to start. I felt sad that he left Milan but he requested the transfer for more playing time. Milan was not a good fit for his growth at that time. Honestly in my opinion he is still not as good as Bennacer or Kessie so he is not going to start for Milan even he stays. Sassuolo is definitely not a smaller version of Atalanta in terms of tactics. You could say that about their rise and willingness to commit to the attacking football though.. Sassuolo is better tactically in my opinion even though they lack quality defence. I think a change in personnel at the back would improve their defensive stats massively and there is no better team in Serie at offensive play.. when they go for it and try to score they score 2 or 3 within a matter of 5 to 10 minutes. I really want Roberto De Zerbi to coach a top team now.. I wanna see how his style of play and tactics work at a higher level, competing for Champions league and stuff..

Watching this in 2022, with RDZ now at Brighton, it's clear that they have adopted the same tactics formerly employed at Sassuolo. You can see the same short, crisp passing, the attacking wing play, the goal scoring, and the building confidence in the way Brighton is playing. For sure, RDZ produces a very exciting and aesthetically pleasing style of play: lots of flair and goalscoring.

It depends on how they play the ball upfield, they don’t play high balls because their team is generally of average height (Caputo 5’11” and Obiang 6’1”) so they can’t genuinely compete in the air. So they think about play quick, and with the work ethic of Locatelli and Obiang with of Boga and Berardi this helps them engage in play better given that they are inverted wingers. So there is that , but Toljan and Kyriakopoulos have dynamism and power respectively in their passing so there is that as well.

They can't defend anymore, they can't build-up or play progressive passing (they have a problem creating), and they miss a lot of what is created. They've become reactive, meaning they can't impose or control the game... luckily they have great players with a great mentality so they get back to score in later third of the match>>> reactive. THERE IS A MISTERY WITH CONTE'S INTER. We are dying to get this thing dissected properly !!! Even Conte doesn't seem to get himself out of the situation !!!

This team is always giving great headache for big teams in Serie A, and has won more than once against big teams.
But I really despise mid-low tier teams in any league who only show up when playing big teams, and against their rivals they play like §hit.

It's because big teams allow more space for them to exploit while mid-lower teams like them park the bus and play on the counter and breaking down teams like that is easier with great differencial player which belong to big teams.

@@euganieldamiao8084 what you said makes sense from a tactical standpoint, also I think it's their mentality that they want to show up against big teams so they play it as if it's the final of the world cup and play with their heart and soul only against big teams, and when they play teams in their level they play like $hit because of the lack of incentive of defeating a big club, which to me is really despicable.

De Zerbi turned 2017/18 season Benevento in a high-scoring team and he is doing the same (but even better) with Sassuolo. He can adapt his technique with little fundings. He deserves much more recognition.

@Anthony Salerno His loss. If he stays at Sassuolo for his entire career he will retire having never won a trophy. Personally, I would love him at AC Milan. There is something to be said for loyalty but there is also something to be said for ambition.

@@Drvol1 a little late now but Berardi actively loves Sassuolo. I think eventually he might move but I think he’s content because he knows he’s the club’s crown Jewel. He personifies what they are about, they develop young talented players who play attacking football. The fact that Berardi now wants to stay is massive for the neroverdi and we love how loyal he’s become.
Maybe soon he will move on but even if he does he will always be remembered as one of the best Sassuolo players ever, along with Francesco Magnanelli
