    From their tiny stadium and with a cast of unlikely characters assembled on a minuscule wage budget, Atalanta have somehow risen to become Europe’s hardest-hitting underdog. A third-place finish in Serie A in 2019-20 could be replicated if and when Italian football resumes, and the team are already through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.
    Tactics Explained casts its eye over Gian Piero Gasperini’s miracle in Bergamo.
    Today's video accompanies The Athletic's James Horncastle on Atalanta. Read it here: theathletic.com/1822917/2020/...

      Gasperini puts players in a position and plays to their advantages, his most players are good strong respectful footballers. He just showed them how to be dangerous... @@Julian_orwell Because it raises the bar too high, it's an economical giant, with two teams, three if you count Juventus B, and even the top tier teams get very often lazy... and this has been going on for decades, even AC Milan, that won many Champions Leagues, used to play with reserves in Serie A, when they had dream teams.
      Of course, they have to be complimented, because they always managed to keep their budget in order, and were great into buying players that then become stars, like Pogba, but as an italian i became less and less interested in Serie A, since Juventus can make a season winning more than thirty games, and there is no team that won't have a couple bad days, even just for injured top players: just look their attack, they have Higuain, Dybala, Ronaldo, while even another big team, like AC Milan, could hardly afford only one of them (and it was a disaster).
      Juventus in Italy is... it's hard to explain, many people from little town go for Juventus since they have no team in Serie A, so there are 12 milions of Juve fans, but in the meantime all the others kinda hate them, because Juventus is not just a team of football, it's something with a story, bounded to the story of Italy, and sometimes darkly... there was a scandal with tricked games and corrupted referees, there was a scandal about them taking endovenose salts during half time, and they always never gave a fuck, buying out the best players, the heroes, of every little italian team... they even bought Baggio just before Italia 90, and with the italian training camp near Florence (from where Baggio was coming), was an asshole move... and what about FIAT, the cars made by Juventus owners? It's an anomaly of the italian economy, even by now, receiving money from the State while it's homed outside Italy, and ruled by Chrisler! All the presidents and families that tried to own a team in Serie A briefly failed, even after winning, but not Juventus, as FIAT can't fail or die...

      An italian sport journalist, Gianni Brera, used to say that a game with many goals is a game in wich the teams defended themselves poorly, and that's the spirit of the italian football, order. @Julian_orwell Pƙed 3 lety +8

      @@darioildiario3001 you're mixing levels here, probably 'cause of your hatred towards the club, hence the biased judgment. The owners' business has little to do with the team and their sport achievements. If I start listing all the mischiefs of Milan and Inter's owners, we won't be finished by the morning. And mind, those clubs, unlike Juve, were poorly managed and often drawing money from other companies.
      As for the 'dark side' of Juve, what you report shows you're either terribly misinformed or riding the haters' wave. Either way, it would be a waste of time trying to talk some sense into you.
      Calciopoli's documents are largely public. Every 8-yo, with an average IQ, can read and understand what sort of scam that was.

  • @tristanb123
    @tristanb123 Pƙed 3 lety +74

    Another key element to Atalanta's success I would add is their surprising strength in depth, particularly in attack. It says a lot that the team's top scorer in the league this year, Luis Muriel, isn't even a starter. Muriel and Ruslan Malinovskyi usually come in with 20-30 minutes to go, and pick up exactly where any of Gomez, Ilicic, Zapata, or Pasalic left off. Same thing at wing-back, Timothy Castagne is supremely efficient and never seems to put a foot wrong when he comes on for either of Hateboer or Gosens. You can tell that the tactical training is intense enough that basically every sub becomes a supersub, everyone knows exactly what to do, what their role is, and how to work with the players that are already on the pitch.
    Muriel and Malinovskyi also have some absolute rocket launchers for feet. Combine that with excellent team play, organization, and the tendency to get attacking players in ridiculously ideal positions to score from, its really unsurprising that this team regularly racks up 5+ goals per game.

  • @MinisterSW
    @MinisterSW Pƙed 4 lety +17

    You missed one trademark move explaining their success in counterattacks (as well as the exceptionally high number of goals by wingbacks). Atalanta always fills the box with 3 to 5 players with great runs from the two wingbacks and at least one central midfielder. Ideally, two central midfielder get the ball back, send one wingback up in the space available on the wing, while the other wing runs highon the other side and Gomez, Zapata or Ilicic offer lines for triangles to allow the wing to go even deeper with the ball. Normally this allows for a formation in which one wingback is able to cross or pass the ball from the side of the box and has a striker (Zapata or Ilicic) on the first post, Gomez or a central midfielder waiting outside the box for a long shot from ideal position, the second stricker that moves towards the penalty spot and the second wingback that arrives on the second post. This filling of all areas in and outside the box make it almost impossible to defend without huge ccordination. Atalanta players are so used to this scheme that they execute it almost flawlessly in movement, the only variable to success being the quality of the pass from the winger which is often physically tested by the big runs. For a demonstration, go see the two matches against Valencia. They used this scheme all the time (Hateboer's goal was a variation on it). In Seria A as well.

    Fantastic analysis. Another aspect to consider is the good depth of the squad... for example the video didn't even cover Muriel, Castagne, and Malinovskiy -- all of whom have contributed a lot this season. Also amazing is how deep Gomez is now dropping within this scheme ... for example in the July 2 match v Napoli he was almost in a Pirlo role at times!!

    • @abbba2007
      @abbba2007 Pƙed 4 lety +2

      Such requirements really differ depending on the nation (conf) you want to manage in, but broadly speaking if you ever played Football Manager and remember asking your board to fund your coaching license, these are universally required to manage anywhere in Europe.
      So for basically any top tier division you'll need to hold UEFA Pro license as a manager or at least UEFA A license as an assistant and lower qualifications licesnses are required to work at lower levels. Such licenses are universally recognized and can be acquired in any national confederation you prefer regardless of your citizenship. Most courses will last month or few, though Pro licenses take around 9.

They won't win the Serie A right now but there's a chance they can become a serious force in the Champions league as well as Serie A beginning this season. Gasperini should be the next Liverpool coach. Let them do away with Klopp.

    You should check out this season's Hellas Verona, Ivan Juric learned from Gasperini when he was his captain at Genoa and he's now blossoming as a coach utilising some similar tactics
    With one difference, we play 3-4-2-1 but don't rely on a real striker: usually Zaccagni & Pessina (loaned from Atalanta) play behind Borini (who only joined in January) or Verre
    Except of course when Pazzini comes off the bench and decides the game (160 minutes played, 4 goals)
