Atalanta’s Tactics Under Gian Piero Gasperini

- Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta have been one of the most exciting sides in Europe this season. Gasperin’s side are in place to play in the quarter-finals of the Champions League, after scoring eight against La Liga side Valencia over two legs
Under Gasperini, Atalanta have largely set up in a 3-4-1-2 but their front three are often versatile forwards that can be deployed in a flat three but one of the main reasons Gasperini is enjoying his most successful spell as a manager is perhaps he’s got a bit of pragmatism about him now, often shown in his team selection.
Often Gasperini goes with his best front three, often flat with Papu Gómez and Josip Iličić off Zapata but against tougher opposition he distinctly goes with a 1-2, with an extra midfielder drafted in, usually Mario Pašalić for that extra protection offered by only leaving two up top for the counter rather than the three you’d see when deploying a 3-4-2-1.
32 year old Josip Iličić has been the keyman for Gasperini this season. The Slovenian has been directly involved in 20 Serie A goals this season. Duván Zapata goals were replaced by Papu Gómez & Josip Iličić when the Colombian went out injured earlier in the season. Gómez has chipped in with 10 Serie A goals and contributing to three Champions League goals.
In the final third, Gasperini’s men tend to attack in a lopsided 3-2-3-2 with Alejandro “Papu” Gomez in the hole as the side’s playmaker, Josip Illicic pulling into the right channel where he can operate as an inside forward, whilst Duvan Zapata uses his physicality and strength to lead the line as Atalanta’s target man where he looks to link Atalanta’s moves or finish them off.
How far will Gian Piero Gasperini’s Atalanta go in the Champions League?

I'm from Bergamo and I've been a fan of Atalanta since I was born. Knowing that in Europe in recent years there has been a lot of talk about my team and my little city, I am extremely proud. Thanks to all of you and Forza Atalanta ;)
definitely a team to keep an eye on
Wooooooooo 💪💪💪
Forza Atalanta! From Australia , im a massive fan and I have been following them since I was kid saw through relegation, promotion and now years later they are successful with the right coach and system in place.Forza Atalanta
Sending best wishes to Bergamo.
Truly a team to be proud of supporting! The most entertaining team to watch in Serie A.
I personally think Atalanta are one of if not the best-attacking side in Europe. The number of chances they create each game is insane and they have quality options in attack across the pitch
They are sooooo good going forward. 🔥🔥🔥
Well spotted. The team perfectly fits the Alenatore and vice versa. At any moment from anywhere in the red zone 5-6 players can score - and they DO - its phenomenal!!
Most exciting team in the ucl this year.
By a mile!!!!
L Maz Liverpool just got ass kicked 😅
I am rooting them in UCL, semifinalist candidate for sure
@@karl4893 Yeah... exaggerate much??? Liverpool should have won 5-1 against Atletico... even Simeone said "I have no idea how we managed to win this"... Liverpool is playing the best football on the planet at this point and instead of them you'll be seeing the boring snooze fest that is Atletico and their "tactical" play which actually means "we ruin the game and play all out defense and pray to score one to win 1-0".... yeah... cause that's the football people wanna watch, right?
Atalanta have scored 5 or more goals 6 or 7 times this season. Once 6 goals, twice 7 goals. Absolutely destructive.
Great video as usual👍👍👍👏👏
Cheers lad.
Actually never 6 goals, but three times 7 (against Udinese, Torino and Lecce). Also there have been two 5-0, one against Milan and the other against Parma (in consecutive matches)😆
ChrysTheRocker bregamo 6-2 against Sasualo last season
Not exactly..
Atalanta Vs. Udinese 7 - 1
Atalanta Vs Milan 5 - 0
Atalanta Vs. Parma 5 - 0
Torino Vs. Atalanta 0 - 7
Lecce - Atalanta 2 - 7
@@karl4893 Yeah, but it was last season, like you said😂
Dave is wearing his tactical turtleneck today.
Lololol
Tactics= attack, attack, attack!
ATTACCCKKKKK
Haha..Agree with that,
I think atalanta player always moving forward to open space and create many chance.
Many player very fluid and can swift pos so fast like pasalic, gomes, ilicic and malinvsky.
Finally. 😭😭
You have no idea how long I've been waiting for you to do this. Thank you. 🤝🏾
Sorry Ed. We finally have it.
@@StatmanDave Any ideas on how to replicate this on FM? Been trying different systems but its hard to find the perfect role for Ilicic, hard to get the team fluidity going right (the positional interchanges) and literally impossible to involve the center backs.
llicic is really a good player, credit to Gomez too.
The older the wine, the sweeter.
They are punching above their weight.
I say alanta vs rb leipzig would a maginifiscent game to watch
One of them in the semis 😍😍😍
@@StatmanDave That would be well derseved
@@StatmanDave hey statman this is the wrong side to bring this up and everything I was asking if u could make a video about kai havertz
@@sphamandlalindanhlengethwa4506 Atalanta vs. Leipzig can happen in CL 1/2 finals.
BERGAMO IS CRYIN FOR PEOPLE DYING FOR THE VIRUS.
ATALANTA WILL GIVE US SMILE AND POSITIVITY.
Super underrated manager!
The people asked for a breakdown of Atalanta’s team and tactics and Statman Dave answered!
Woooooooo
Teams like Lazio n Atalanta are making serie A interesting , it had been dull for a while ..especially since Milan lost their mojo.
Thank you for this, Dave
You are always getting better. Great infographics and explanation. 👍🏾

I've been really impressed by their goal-scoring exploits as a team both in the league competitions and in the Ucl and it's good to finally watch an in-depth analysis of the team. You're doing a great job Statman Dave.
Great video Dave, as bergamasco and Atalanta born supporter I have to say you have done a pretty much accurate picture of our team.
Your videos are all we have till April Dave, keep them coming.
This is great, thank you very much
Been waiting for this video
wonderful explanation, lots of details actually about this Atalanta Gasperini. Thanks
Very accurate, competent . Cheers
This is the man I want at Spurs next season. The players will be subconsciously used to his style when he comes in, having gotten familiar with a counter attacking system under Mourinho and and high intensity press under Pochettino.
Theese are the best videos make more of them please
I've seen a lot of tactical explanations about the exciting style of Atalanta, but this is by far the best.
Very accurate analysis, great video about my team :-)
Plz make a video on how Carlo Ancelotti sets up Everton
Great video, could have a look at Everton and Carlo Ancelotti in a future video
great video, you explain tactics and examplify them graphically really good. Just wish you could talk slower sometimes, and take more time to demonstrate the more complicated tactics
They're so clinical in front of goal
Ilicic is class
Nice vidio
Also Zapata -prior to his 3-4 month injury recently - was THE central scorer last season not Ilicic. Zapata though lacking high speed, is very strong and has good ball control skills in the box which often leads to goals. The team attack East-West as much as North-South when around the net because the wing backs and defenders are athletic and fit enough to run up and shoot/head then sprint back on any resulting counter.
Can you maybe make a video about Roger Schmidt? Would be amazing as he is one of the best gegenpress managers from thr last years
As a united fan i think to replace Solskjaer i would sign either Nagelsmann or Gasperino
You still wanna replace him?
I don't think so
Hey I did 3 months ago
Even Cruyff can’t save this MU team. The board needs to change, the club needs a football director and not some leech like Ed Woodward.
Then, I believe Ole will do great.
Sad that we may not ever see what could have potentially been the most epochal dark horses in recent UCL memory.
They will get to the semis
I come from the city we’re Atalanta is from forza Atalanta 🖤💙🖤💙🖤
Can you please make a video how Manchester United can line up when Marcus Rashford and Pogba comeback
Correction Brad. Atalanta BC have been absolutely pulsating for the past two seasons. They are a powerhouse squad wherein 5-6 players can score at any time from any field position.
do some more championships tactics like fulham or brentford or forest
Would love to see this side against Cris Wilder's Sheffield United
For me them against Wolves would be a dream
@@jeffonyango8580 oh yes the battle of the 343 old attack vs old defence ATLANTA VS WOLVES
Im calling it. They are winning the champions league in their first season
Finally I found
@statmandave I don't about you but there is a lot of bielsa in this team the same way Bayern 2012-2013 had
ATALANTA!
Do a video on Stefano Pioli tactics
There is a difference between geggenpressing and Atlanta, they press and shape the press to overload the side where the ball is this helps in dominant possession and then this overloading helps them as you see more Atlanta players in the box for attack this the only frame where you have to repossess the ball and do swift counter attack . PSG can do good counter attack due to mbappe but only problem is their defence. PSG defence will get overloaded leading to poor passes and give Atlanta chances. If they can give good passes and exploit this window they can win. But for me Atlanta are the favorites.👍
How will bruno and pogba lineup for man unt????
Conte's Chelsea First Year
@statmandave could you see Gasperini succeeding in the PL? Possibly at a team like Wolves?
Would be tasty
I could see him managing Everton if Carlo was not there, or also at West Ham
josip ilicic - once upon a time in bergamo...
Theu and Leipzig are very interesting this season. But we've seen thos movie before haven't we ? The squads will be scattered next season including their coaches
they play a real modern total modular football...
Gasperini at Arsenal would of been very interesting
Great shout! 🔥
@@StatmanDave can you do how gasperini can rebuild west ham to top 4 contenders it would be interesting with 4 signings please dave and west ham is my local club
Never, he will stay at Atalanta forever to make the history just like Sir Alex and Wenger
@@karl4893 I get that but surely, he's an honorary citizen of Bergamo, he is the first manager to guide them to the CL. Surely there will be a point where he feels he can't progress them any further?
Front Post Football Surely those top teams are gonna sack him just like Inter because all they want is MONEY
La Dea La Dea La Dea!! I have won thousands on the PTS in Atalanta games over the past 18 months they are incredible. In just a few of their results it paid for an expensive molar dental implant and then some!! Aggressive coach + aggressive hungry players = great punting!! Forget the low scores just wager on the freaky scores and they are due for a 4-2.
Mad how well Barcelona could implement this system with Messi.
Do stats on coronavirus while the footy is cancelled
Only wish AC Milan can play half good as ATL. Entertaining to watch ATL.
Lazio Next please
All because the lady loves milk tray hey Dave?
Love watching Atalanta this year.
When the Gasp finds the gap
Wernerr!
Dave. No football for a while... can you please make an updated ole’s United? E.g. the impact of Bruno and how we are dominating lower teams?
Who is your favourite coach?
I hope Gasperini will stay in Atalanta and not go to any of big 3 clubs. He must make history in Bergamo - win the first title in history. It's a great project and in big 3 he would propably failed be cause of many "stars" and ego's that are there.
Gasporini and inzaghi both in 2016 this is what I call ironic
With in 5 years atalanta will be a mid table team. There star players are aging and they don't have the financial power that other top teams do despite having great youth other top teams can easily take from them with their financial power.
Such a depressing year already
Lol
Diego Simeone atleti tactics??
It's a myth but left footed players just tend to be better
Which team do you reckon this season stood the best chance of winning the CL and why? That is, if the season were to continue. Also, I agree that both City and Bayern would destroy Atalanta, they’re just all over technically better at their roles
Man city struggle against counterattack from wolves and Manchester United
welcom to ac milan gasperini
Statman Do you think Atalanta have a chance to win the UCL , if the competition goes on ...btw
No. I think City and Bayern would carve them open.
Statman Dave
City , I don’t see it , Bayern will have too see ..
Really like what you do the only thing I don’t like about you is that you support united🙈😂😂
Thanks haha 😂
No more background music please
Now Dave tell me how do I make my team play like this on Football Manager ;)
3-4-1-2 Gegenpressing ;)
The roles Dave
What about the roles ?😂
Good mid player
Which one?
@@StatmanDave freuler and de roon is well balanced midfield
Only Team that tacitly destroyed them was Dinamo Zagreb 4-0 but Atlanta adopted in second game come to 3-0 victory easy. Gasperini is good coach but his system can only work in small clubs like Atlanta. Becourse it all about team playing and sacrface by evey player even main stars. In big clubs that dont work.
Gasperini ACmilan
Arsenal could have got him, but they went with Arteta
Liverpool 2-3 Atletico yeeeeaaaaahhh
Lol
