In 2023, the most popular sports video game franchise in the world had to change its name. FIFA, as it was known, became EA FC.
What began simply as a negotiating position in a licensing dispute, turned into one of the costliest decisions in the history of football.
James Montague explains, illustrated by Craig Silcock.

Big streamers are tired of FC24 already, so some may shift and show the other game to wider public. Compare emotions of NickRTFM between when he plays FC and eFootball. I think there lays massive potential, but Konami needs to full send into market, add more modes, listen to the community more and they will get it. Also there comes new football games in UFL and Goals, so finally maybe by collective effort we make EA actually invest in the game more and it will only profit whole community, coz right now for PS5-gen we didn't really have a fun football game.

2K getting into football can only be a good thing,
Since the gap widened on PES, EA Sports have been resting on their laurels more and more, the quality control of the last few games in particular, including EAFC24 have been nothing short of abysmal, with replicable, often game-breaking bugs and broken features that any semi-competent playtesting team would have ironed out on the first run, somehow persisting across multiple releases, particularly in the game's now severely neglected career modes.
I'd go as far as to describe the EA Sports development team as the ONLY team in an industry defined by poor labour conditions and crunch cycles to be practically stealing their wages, because there's no real man hours going into these games anymore.
the game's still selling because there's no real alternative for that football gaming fix
either 2K provide a more competent alternative, or EA are forced to actually exert some effort again to stave off the erosion of their monopoly.

I swear, only FIFA would be able to make us be sympathetic towards EA

Always looking for ways to get the players to dispense with more money. Too much focus on FUT and not enough on the actual gameplay or indeed other modes

Really sorry to hear that PES has fallen from a cliff. Pes 20 and 21 were really nice

The hubris of FIFA to think that they can create a game from nothing in a year is astonishing.

I was always a PES fan back in the day. The licensing is always good with EA, but if 2K get involved I think I’ll definitely be checking it out.
    the NBA games are great.

There is currently a company backed by CR7 and KDB who are making a competitor called UFL (Ultimate Football League) and have already made a deal with FIFpro for licencing player images. If the game comes out (after 2 years of delays) and is actually good, FIFA might just run over there instead of bothering with 2K.

So UFL in Asia be like:
Published by Capcom and compete against eFootball
Imagine in North American release be like:
UFL name changed into ULS which developee by Strikerz Inc. published by Square Enix

UFL don’t actually have many or any licenses though. It’s just a FUT clone.

When anyone associated with EA tell you they are trying to be "creative, innovative, experimental" - they are lying to your face on all counts.

I played FIFA 99, 01, 03, 04, 05, 06, 07, 08, 12, 14, 15, 17, 18, 19 and 20... I honestly see no evolution since FIFA 15 or 16 and by FIFA20 i just decided I will not play another EA Football Game unless they ACTUALLY change something other than graphics or more lootboxing gameplay with more ingame purchases.
I love the football genre and Football Manager completely delivers for me, but sometimes i dont want to play as a manager. And unfortunately it seems there is no good game to play "as a player"
