  • The Bigtreetech SKR Mini E3 V3.0 is now available and I'll compare the features versus other boards and show you a complete install on the Ender 5.
    This video is sponsored by PCBWay! Check out pcbway.com/g/CmD9Z6 for manufacturing services from PCBs to 3D printing and CNC machining.
    #Bigtreetech #SKRMiniE3 #Ender5
    NOTE: The Ender 5 Plus requires a new display (at this time) to upgrade to this board. Please see my other Ender 5 Plus videos using Bigtreetech boards.
    ALSO NOTE: There are many reports of people having problems using this board with the stock BLTouch on the Ender 5 Plus. It does not happen to everyone. It did not happen when I tested it myself. The only known potential fixes are switching to a CRTouch, switching to Klipper, or there has been a case of just needing to update the touchscreen firmware to the latest.
    With that being said, I CANNOT and DO NOT recommend this board on the Ender 5 Plus at this time. There are too many people having these issues and, while I've improved it in my latest 2.1.1 firmware, I have not been able to provide a fix for this issue. So far it appears to be an electrical issue that software has not been able to work around.

    • @PabzRoz
      @PabzRoz Před rokem

      @@twiztid664 I had the 4.2.2 board originally as well. Do it. Totally worth it. Stil been running strong zero issues. But it's not a simple plug and play. The only things that sucked is that for my CR touch I had to swap two of the wires in the JST connector for it to work on the board. Wasn't hard at all super easy but figuring out why it wasn't working was a pain at first but there's a really good guide online that explains all the pinouts on the board for you. Just had to look up which color wires were what on my cr touch. Same thing would go for ther BL touch as well. And ontop of that the firmware that came out for the SKR mini v3 at the time just wasn't working right. So I had to compile my own firmware which again wasn't hard but annoying as hell. After those 2 things though it's been flawless. Beautiful prints and my printer is insanely quiet now. Worth every penny. Again these issues were when it first came out so I'm sure the current firmware is all fixed and you won't need to compile your own anymore. Overall I'd recommend it over the 4.2.2 board for sure. And the mini v3 price is good.

    BTW - that new link you gave to the pre made JST connectors are for 1.25mm JST connectors (refers to the inter-pin distance) - the plugs that are required are 2.54mm (TBF they do look identical in the picture, but having tried to make up the 2.54mm ones I hate to think how difficult making the 1.25mm ones are). They are available on amazon if you look (although I had to buy 50) - I won't include the link because I'm in the UK.

    You are right when you say that the balance between the components of a 3D printer is key and so a higher speed ARM M4 at 180MHz offers more performance than a standard mechanical build of a 3D printer can handle. It is so, that the aluminum structure used in the Ender 5 Plus is what is called "light" and there are 2 more variants, the stiffest one is "Heavy". Replacing the structure with stiffer aluminum profiles gets into the challenge to replicate the holes drilled into them. Here I see a possible product to be offered to the market by 3rd parties.
    The other component required to upgrade the performance is to use drivers using TMC5161 that can handle up to 60VDC. Watterott i.e. offers those. Finally, a separate power supply with 48 VDC to feed the drivers will add to it. BTT now has a board that supports this.
    3D printing is a slow manufacturing process and if you go to use less than 0.4 mm you can even improve the resolution of your prints thanks to the higher speed it does happen as fast as before.

    Kris, I had a follow up comment. First, my Ender 5 Plus is stock as it ships with just the BL Touch auto bed leveling feature factory installed. I haven't modified it in any way other than replacing the stock main board with the Creality silent version board. And that leads to my experience with those silent boards. I installed both that later failed. They both worked flawlessly initially. The first worked for a couple months, and it successfully completed dozens of prints, and it failed appearing to be a problem with homing and seemed to be a problem with the BL Touch, but ended up actually being the silent board that had failed. The second one only worked for a couple weeks, and just failed today with the z-drive crapping out. The z steppers check out okay, so the growling and slow attempts at motion are surely caused by the driver failing. I attempted to adjust the stepper operating voltage, but that didn't solve the problem, thus I ordered the BTT SKR Mini E3 V3.0 and am here asking for your help.

      I'll do my best to answer your questions. The BTT SKR Mini E3 V3.0 is a drop-in replacement and firmware installation should be easy. The only thing that is extra is that I don't support the stock display with my firmware. There are several technical reasons for this but, bottom line, it's not supported. So you will have to replace the display with one like the BTT TFT35. Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Great video! I did the upgrade on my Ender 5 pro . Having a hard time getting the firmware to update to Ender 5 pro . It’s on Ender 3 ?! Is there a video on how to load the firmware on the printer?

      @kerseyfabs  Před rokem

      1) Download my firmware from the description for your printer configuration.
      2) Rename the file to firmware.bin and copy it to the SD card that came with the board.
      3) Insert it in the mainboard when it's powered down.
      4) Power on the printer and it should automatically flash it.
      5) You can verify it by the info on the display or making sure the file was renamed to firmware.cur.

    Tried your configuration on my Ender 5 Pro with BL Touch with the SKR Mini E3 V3 and it just jammed up all the steppers. Any updates?

      No. At this time, I do not have a firmware that supports the stock display.

      @@kerseyfabs Hi, after seeing your video and this answer, I decided to buy the SKR Mini E3 V3.0 with the TFT35 V3.0 for my Ender 5 Plus. I installed everything following your advice and checked the polarity. Everything seems to work (I can move the pins and heat the nozzle or bed) but as soon as I turn on the power, after seeing the BLtouch go down and up twice (lighted in red), I get an error message, saying : "Failed to enable Bed Leveling". Do you have any idea of the possible cause ?

    • @kerseyfabs
      @kerseyfabs  Před 2 lety +1

      @@auroch7676 That just means you haven't run ABL (auto-bed leveling) yet. Run ABL and the error will go away.

      @@kerseyfabs thanx a lot !
      For the nest steps, is there somewhere a new procedure to level up the E5Plus with this firmware version ?
      For your in formation, when I use the function for leveling with the 4 corners and the center, it seems that the distances are not correct :
      - The right front point is on the middle of the plat, not at right
      - The Left rear point is at the middle of the left side of the palte, not at the rear.
      - The right rear point is at the middle of the plate (between front and rear & right and left)

    My E3 Turbo is cooking my steppers is this a better option? I run the SKR 2 in my CR10S and have never had an issue with that board. I suspect the E3 Turbo was rushed to market... How has been the long term reliability with the newer board.

    • @kerseyfabs
      @kerseyfabs  Před rokem

      Yeah, I really like this board but they've discontinued it. I assume the overheating is why. I've seen no reports of issues on the SKR 2 or SKR 3. I've been using the SKR 2 for a while now.

    One big thing you left out was the new firmware thats needed for the Ender 5 Plus touchscreen to make it function with the Marlin v2 firmware. There is a whole new DWIN file set needed to get full functionality.

      I don't support using the stock touch screen.

    • @mech13
      @mech13 Před 2 lety +2

      @@kerseyfabs is that because of sponsorships or another reason? I'm making a DWIN set to go with the stock touchscreen based off Jay Aristide's build. I just don't have the cash to throw at a new screen when the stock one works fine.

    • @kerseyfabs
      @kerseyfabs  Před 2 lety +1

      @@mech13 Nope. No sponsorship here. No financial reason at all. I just don't like it, so I don't want to make a video on it. If there's a DWIN solution that gives me all of the features and control of a Marlin interface, including M600 support, I'd be happy to look into it. Traditionally the support has been very lacking.

    • @mech13
      @mech13 Před 2 lety +1

      @@kerseyfabs stop the clock. Are you saying that the only way to get M600 to work on the E5P is with a new screen? Obviously this doesn't include working off octopi / octoprint because it works with octoprint even on your marlin 1.7.3BL

    • @kerseyfabs
      @kerseyfabs  Před 2 lety +1

      I realize you can probably do that with an OctoPrint plugin but many of my viewers are not interested in adding an additional layer to their printer. I get so many messages, emails, and comments asking how to get M600/pause at layer working on a stock Ender 5 Plus. If you know how to do this with an updated DWIN firmware, I'd be down to making a video on it.
