The Internet Archive situation is a genuine loss
Not if they want you to forget, then it's a huge win.

We have always been at war with Eurasia.
Libraries could not be invented today, due to legal restrictions. They _only_ exist because of historical inertia and precedent.
Terrible, but true. If the concept of a library was invented today, not only would it be monetized to hell and back, but also get sued out of existence anyway because sharing books and knowledge for free is obviously such an absurd and unsustainable idea. An author can't make a living when libraries give their life's work for free!
Capitalism-style copyright and Library is such at odds with each other which make it seems one or the other should not exist.
Hmm i wonder which

First, AI destroying all the communities online. Second, now taking away libraries. "Information Super-highway" was a bait term.

I study English at a major university and the Internet Archive is often one of the only places I can find certain texts online. It's honestly crazy how many old books just are not accessible outside of major libraries/archives.
You could be all right if your books are old enough to be out of copyright. I have a fairly archaic idea of an old book, though. Still, it would be classy to turn up to class with your Jacobethan texts all in PDFs of the first editions.
Oh the horror, how did we even have English at major universities before 2011.
@@AnomieDomineby libraries existing.
This ruling effectively sets a precedent where Libraries would also soon be held liable for copyright infringement.
Add _red_ states like Texas, Florida etc banning books & defunding entire libraries(Houston)
The Internet archive purge is depressing
It's okay as long as they only get rid of those right wing disinfo books that say men can't get pregnant.
I guarantee those publishers "tipped" money to win the ruling over internet archive
Not tipped but they probably have been lobbying which seems as though it's just a way to bribe legally.
Nah they had a strong case , They were gonna win no matter what
I adore the internet archive, But they did something stupid even if it was the correct thing to do
Shouldn't have given ammo to the copyright ghouls
@@ezail9159according to the video they did the same thing a library does. Lend out the amount of copies they own, they just did it digitally. If thats "stupid" why arent librarys stupid?
The rule was they could lend out as many copies of a book that they owned. In 2020, they decided to just start lending at as many copies as people wanted. The publishers are in the right, internet archive can't just scan books and send a pdf to everyone.
@@dontworry1302this case is talking about CDR, controlled digital lending, aka. handing out as many copies as you own. The 2020 thing was done a long time ago this is something new.

The trite answer is that Al Capone was convicted of tax evasion. These agencies are run by lawyers, and lawyers like to win cases. Sometimes that means filing charges against the lesser wrong you can *prove* instead of the greater one that might not even technically be illegal.
"Jobs that shouldn't be there in the first place" is a crazy statement to make considering his main product couldn't even be an idea 100 years ago

Just another reminder to demonstrate why physical media will always be superior.
Neither is superior really.
Physical media can be destroyed as easy as digital media

I would much rather a small HUD on my windshield than having to look at a screen on the center console. I really wish I could see even just mile per hour or something like that.

Those robots with living skin will surely just use it to specifically have facial expressions and will definitely not be used for other purposes, right?

I'm sure you're not the only one who figured it out. If you ignored copyright and the grey zone the Internet Archive lived in, content has been freely available online since online existed. The internet will be fine
3:42 but the store gets to claim it still owns the paintbrush you bought from it and took home with you, right? 😂
From what I recall, that internet archive thing won't really have much of an effect on normal libraries because they currently buy very expensive licenses for their digital lending programs.
Up until recently, companies made profits from products and services that people needed/ wanted. Now, in the ~everything is a subscription~ era, monopolies can turn everything into worse versions so they can charge you more for regular things you could do for less 10 years ago
