    What a beautiful piece of early 1861 classic, traditional gunsmith engineering - no CAD design or CNC machining involved here! Loading guns like this his is clearly a dying art - thanks for sharing your skills Nick and making this CZcams video with Jonny for all to look back on in the future and beyond 👍😍

    Hi John, I hope you realise the world is your oyster in the Gun trade , with associated manufacturers , field sports body's etc.I believe you will go far, you are a very likeable well informed young man . If I was a director of one of the big company's you would be on the top of my list for a managerial position . I was a successful business man for 40yrs before retirement and know a good thing when I see it .

    Coincidentally just fired my old J. Scott percussion double for the first time today! Proofed in Birmingham circa 1855. Not as fancy as that beautiful Boss gun, but she handily withstood a deliberate 120 grain overcharge in each barrel with grace. Wonder when was the last time she was fired? Now she's cleaned and ready for the next session.

    Such a beautiful piece, and inspiring to hear the passion with which Mr Holt talks about it. Simply stunning & thanks for the chance to get to see and understand such fine work by Boss.

    As a previous gentleman stated, snapping off the caps is to dry out the barrel of any oil which could be left in there.
    I prefer two caps per barrel but I point the barrel down over a piece of grass, to see it move when capped off, because it indicated a clear barrel, as up in the air tells you nothing!
    Something that was not mentioned, is when the wads are pushed down onto the powder, IT MUST be done firmly, because if you leave an air gap, you could very easily damage the barrel.
    I have enjoyed BP muzzle loading for fifty years, my pride and joy was a 14g Mortimer flint lock.
    I would love to see more black powder videos made please.
    Great video.

    Actually the reason for snapping a couple of caps before loading the first time is to remove any oil that may be in the breech. It could wet the powder and prevent ignition. To clear the nipples, one uses a nipple pick. It's also wise to mark the ramrod to prevent accidental double charging of a barrel. Great fun. In Britain, must they be reproofed to use/sell them?

      If you have an antique muzzle loading shotgun reproofed it losers its antique status and cannot be removed off ticket

    What a beautiful gun that is! The engraving is absolutely outstanding.
    Black powder shooting is very popular here in the states. In my state (Maryland) there are no regulations for black powder rifle‘s or pistols. Powder and shot are easy to find. You can even mail order guns. We even have separate early and late muzzleloading season for deer.
    I’ve noticed a lack of archery equipment in your shop. Is archery equipment legal to hunt with in the UK?

      Rabbi Shekelberg What was the reasoning for banning archery hunting? Is this a recent thing?

    • @TheHickmanbcfc
      @TheHickmanbcfc Před 4 lety +1

      @@victortamini847 The ban came around in 1965 due to it being seen as 'inhumane'. They said isn't easy to get a clean kill from one shot for example.

    • @victortamini847
      @victortamini847 Před 4 lety

      Rabbi Shekelberg. Thank you. Archery in the states is huge. You can buy off the shelf crossbows that shoot 430fps. I am feeling very lucky to live here and have such great access to all of the field sports with relatively few bans overall. The reason that I ask about the archery is my worry about how the UK is going to adopt a lead ban.
      My worry is that what you enact, will give the anti lead people here more ammo to ban lead shot also. Once the politicians get there foot in the door with a lead ban, it will eventually trickle down to the clay shooting sports also.

      philip nesfield Our 2nd amendment right(gun ownership) is pretty strong. It’s constantly under attack, but we have a powerful ally in the NRA. It doesn’t seem like you guys have that type of representation in government. I’ve been reading up about BASC and it seems they have sold you up the river in regards to lead shot.

    Too many licenses and certificates. As a teen, I used to hunt with an 11 ga. muzzle-loader with 34" barrels. It was quite a handful, but I thought carefully about each shot.

    Lovely gun , snap off a cap at a blade of grass , if the grass moves the nipple is free from oil etc , hammers always at ½ cock all through the loading and capping process .Only cock the second hammer after you have fired off the first barrel , if the first shot is a fizzer you have a cocked hammer to deal with .
    Never ever load from the powder flask .Always use a seperate measure to load the powder , hands , eyes and lives have been lost from using the flask to load from
    Equal volumes of Fg or FFg powder and shot , thats volume not weight ., do not cap the nipples until ready to shoot ,
    Starting shooting a new , to you, double leave the second barrel uncapped , then after the first barrel has been fired use a rod to check the second barrels load has not moved under recoil and the second hammer has not dropped , If the load has moved seat it in again and fire it off , if this continues to happen then find some larger diameter wads .
    Were birds wing shot much in those days ? probably more were shot on the ground in Africa so one could find it before a Jackal or snake etc

    • @duncnz3129
      @duncnz3129 Před 4 lety

      PS The steel ramrod is because it won't break and go through your hand like wooden ones can , also in African heat, powder residue would dry very quickly , cake up, and after a few shots make it difficult to load unless cleaned . The steel ramrod allows the jammed load to be seated by hammering on the rod end . Some guns of this vintage come with a small mallet fo this very purpose . Also never load by pushing on the end of the rod or with your face/body over the barrels , saves on bandages if it goes off accidentally .

    Please do not load out of a powder flask directly into the barrel. If this is a spark left in the barrel you have a bomb in your hand Always pour powder into a measure first!
