  • Whilst at Holts, who had an impressive amount of Boss shotguns in, Simon Reinhold took me through the early History of the company from its inception to WW2.

Interesting comments about the gunmakers who had financial difficulties because of non payment. I have a photo of the ledger showing the purchase of my 1863 Purdey. The purchaser, a solicitor, got a 10% discount for paying cash.

Super cool video! Two thumbs up for Boss & Co. , I presently own and shoot a 1928 Boss with 29" barrels. It has it's original oak and leather case and was imported here to the U.S. in 1928. It has the original owner's address in ink wrote on the front lid.

Simon is a star and your relationship with Holts is outstanding.

Bravo, once again you connect with the intellect of the wing shooter! Boss & Co is a scholarly work, not only the history of Boss but of the development of the shotgun. I started watching British shooting shows, in the states, with the likes of Dave Carrie, Andy Crowe, etc. However, they have taken the sport only so far. You, my friend, are taking the explanation of shooting to a higher level. I really enjoy you discussions with Ed Solomons and the chap that worked with you on Boss. I am looking forward to more Boss like productions.

"All the best ideas happen over a beer." That is reminiscent of Ralph Klein, former Premier of Alberta who said he heard more good ideas listening to the ordinary working men at the bar of the St. Louis Hotel than he ever did in caucus meetings.

I didn't think i liked history. This was a fantastic little story and discovery into the world of trade, smithing and life around the trade, not just the Boss guns. Thank you. Every day is a school day indeed.
I find even more reverence with my 130quid Greener Side by side, which truth be told, was bought through the influence of both Simon and TGS. Keep up the good work all.

Totally enjoyable and fascinating. I have always been in awe of the artisans and skills of the craftsmen that had the ability to make such wonderful pieces of engineering delight. The people who had the vision the concept and the ability to communicate to the gunsmiths what they desired in the manufacturing process is beyond belief. precision engineering with a file. Brilliance indeed! Thanks for another wonderful insight into this fascinating subject. Truly appreciated!!!

I have been lucky to have shot a Boss side by side for a drive on pheasants, it was 1 of a pair, and it just felt like no other side by side I'd ever picked up, it felt alive, just very special, my favourite gun maker, there's still a blank space in my cabinet............1 day, it will appear!!!

And still today there are those who do not want to pay their bills even when they are required to pay a 50% deposit when ordering a custom rifle. I have one now that I built and engraved and the client refused to pay the balance and will not answer inquiries. His 30 days was up a while back so I have a custom rifle available for half the price of what a new one would cost. Excellent video on the history of Boss best guns.

I wonder.... in real-world use is there as much go as there is show? Fancy wood and engraving don't impress me... a gun that fits and works does.
Example -Perazzi - the trigger assembly is easy to remove. A good thing, since they have a habit of mainspring failure. I have a Winchester model 12 with countless thousands of rounds through it, and never a hiccup. It's not pretty, but it WORKS.

No adverts in 1800 -1850 ?????? The front pages of the newspapers at that time would have them on. They needed the revenue from the advertisers to offset the high cost of printing. The advertisers in return wanted maximum audience for their outlay.
