This job is hot enough to melt the sun.
In we have a 2017 Mini Cooper for a ‘non-start’- so the customer says. Upon arrival, we noticed straight away that there is something more than the car not starting. The stench of the car can be sniffed from 10 miles away, and this scent was very familiar (smells like John). We found plethora of faults that can be traced back to this fault. Stick around and find out!

Greetings from Scotland! Oh yeah, seen a few of these in my time! I've removed gearboxes where the bellhousing was full of clutch lining, like shredded wheat! 3 possibilities - 1, fair wear and tear (IF it had a huge mileage!) 2, clutch thrust bearing stuck on it's guide tube (unlikely in a fairly new car) OR simply clutch riding, causing clutch slip and a LOT of heat (like the pressure plate is cracked due to massive heat!) and I would stake my big toe - THAT caused all this damage for sure! Advise the customer to buy an automatic! 😂
You often see people sitting on a slight uphill at traffic lights are too lazy to apply handbrake so just sit slipping the clutch until light changes - SO, SO bad for the clutch!!! Use the foot brake or better still apply handbrake, it's FREE!
*(Over 50 years as a fully main dealer qualified vehicle Technician)*
This is the kind of thing any driving instructor will pull a student up on.
You really have to wonder what size Wheaties packet some people got their license out of.
I will be pinning this! A small number of people think I’m telling rubbish 😂
But yes you are very correct on all points. Thank you! I hope I earned your subscribe
@@miscbits6399 I ask myself that daily now! 😂
@@themarvelousvlog You have! 👍👍
I'm guessing the slave cylinder could be out of adjustment, with that amount of heat it must have been slipping at motorway speeds. Maybe the clutch was worn due to the customer riding it and then it kept slipping permanently until it turned into metal goop.
32 years as a vehicle tech who has done 100's of clutches and i have never seen a clutch so mullered as that! 😂
Mate, we’ve replaced a clutch a few months back, no more pressure plate, all that’s left was the slime and a pressure plate in half 😂
Facts brother, my god wtf was that?😬🤔🤔💀💀🙈🙈🤷👹👹👹👎👎👎
Tell her to get an automatic
I got 118k out of a clutch. Lol.
I reckon that clutch was worn out and slipping, and she just carried on driving until it melted.
You didn’t call her a liar, her clutch called her a liar.
yep, proof is in the pudding.
Fffff 😂
John ANG POGI MO!! From kuya tunying. The one you saw this afternoon at the hospital😂
Professional from start to finish lads.. 👍👍
The only liars in the video were the blokes claiming to know what they were doing. First sign of their stupidity? Not knowing that Minis are built by BMW.
Guys I appreciate the fact you show mistakes and are humble in admitting said mistakes sign of great mechanics.
It’s part of life mate. The car started fine, wasn’t misfiring to begin with so have to hand it back to them like that
He is not American, that makes things more humble. 😘
@@themarvelousvlog I was about to comment the same. I really appreciate and have massive respect for guys showing little mistakes, so the rest of us can all learn too. Keep it real!
That’s why I love all the old “pre sensor cars” broken clutch, remove, replace then drive away (in most cases).
One tip for you fella's! Get a cupcake baking tray or something. So you can keep the bolts and such organized. Especially when you do this stuff on 'dirty driveways' ;)
MAGNETIC cupcake baking tray. That way things don't go flying when it's kicked
Oh, and photograph EVERYTHING as you dismantle it. You'll thank yourself later
I screwed a cup cake tray to the parts bench then dropped a bell housing on it😅
Had a Ford 1/2 pickup towed in once. Customer said he was driving alone and it just quit going. The disc lining was just a pile if dust and debris in the bell housing. He said when it stopped on the side of the road that there was fire under the truck. That was the rubber boot on the clutch lever burning off from the heat of the flywheel. The flywheel was blue and the crankshaft flange and transmission input had some blueing also. This was about 1985 when the OEMs had added overdrive to a 3 spd trans for economy. Previous vehicles the owner had, he would shift into high gear at 80 KPH, so he was doing that with this truck. The low RPM with a 400CID engine would hammer the input shaft bearing in the transmission. When I called the Ford dealer to get a new input bearing, seal and gasket with the clutch assembly and pilot bearing, they knew whose truck I was working on. They had replaced the input bearing 4 times previously.
The owner did not want to pay the core deposit on the clutch. A couple of weeks later he came in and was annoyed he was not getting it back. A few days later he was in again wanting the burned clutch to take to an insurance adjuster. He had talked the person into the idea the fire (of the boot) burning off had burned the clutch out. When he left we had a good laugh at that concept.
The owner. Needs to seriously consider an Auto. If not it's going to be another expensive fix. Cheers Guy's. See you in the next one. 👍👍
After both of you having close calls on being blinded I'm glad to see you both wearing protective eyewear. 👍Look after yourselves guys.
Scary stuff! Best to have both than one, or none
One key point on a clutch with organic facings, like this one. As the temperature increases the friction coefficient is reduced, the higher the temperature gets the less able the facing is to recover the original fruction coefficient, basically it's a spiral of decline, heat is your enemy. I used to be M.D. of a Luk factory.
We had a 1996 Ford Fiesta, the clutch was never changed, it had done 160,000 miles when it got scrapped and the original clutch was still going strong.
I had a 2002 Fiesta which I bought with 90,000 miles and original clutch. Five years later and with 140,000 miles I sold it to a friend still with the original clutch. I think Fords of that era really had durable clutches but also using them properly always helps.
Got to love asbestos clutches 🙄
I want to see a study on driving style and clutch lifetime, my mum treats clutch pedal as an on off switch nothing in between. One of her clutches lasted 38k. My Mondeo MK4 tdci is on 160k on original cluctch and it seems fine, my driving instructor 40 hrs ago always told me to hesitate slightly when letting the pedal out and always take any pressure off once gear changed.
my kia soul 2016 has 250k miles original clutch and original everything but sparkplugs and alternator
@@BleachDemon99not asbestos! That was stopped in UK decades ago.
Hey there, CZcams led me to your video on the Mini, great job showing exactly how mechanic jobs go in the real world start to finish, you pair work well together, good commentary, and camera work, keep up the great work. 👍😊🇦🇺
Thank you! We will keep on improving so we beg for your support and sub! Haha! 😅
Fucking hell 17 reg, 56k miles and like that. Jesus
Just done a 69 plate Nissan 32k miles slaves cylinder burst and dual mass fly wheel was wrecked as well
@gregshearer423 that's bad buts let's be fair DMFs are the spawns of Satan. My old citroen (now project car while I wait for bits) one is knocking at 220k miles but what's worse is my parents DV6 3008 in which the DMF went at just 60k miles. 32 to wreck a clutch tho is bad, my first car had its original clutch when I got it at 60k miles and another 40 was put on it after that. People just can't help themselves but drive shit😂
My god clocked tf out!🤷👹👎🤷🙈💀💀🤔😬😬😬😬👎👎
@@woodant1981 aw complete agree about DMF and aye some people should really just go buy automatics 😂😂
Im sure they are meant to last longer than 56k miles haha dont know how its so hard to not ride the clutch just move ur foot away from the pedal
Great team work lads. Everyone should have a reliable team like you two to work on their vehicle. It's good to do a good job. You sleep easy and the customer sleeps easy.
I admire your good attitudes, perseverance and refusal to despair with frustrating jobs like this. Good learning experience for you and for us!
We will keep pushing content like this. Thank you!
Well done lads I had a garage for over 50 years and your honesty is tops,We're all learning all the time.
Hope you maintain this quality of work , you deserve to succeed. Well done .👍
Excellent job, guys.
A matter of severe clutch riding including never letting go of it. Never seen such a wear down.
It's always good to include the stupid problems and dumb mistakes - the stuff every person makes at some point and then curses themselves out. It keeps it raw, real and honest IMO. Great job
Thank you! This is exactly where I’m taking it. As a mechanic, we make the stupidest mistakes when repairing cars and that’s just the reality of every mechanic.
Thank you! Hope I gained your sub 😁
Well done guys , perseverance always pays off.
Great job bros. Keep going and more customers i wish for you ..
Thank you!
Hi guys
I didn't realise how much agro the the clutch on the mini. You really have done a great job. You mentioned the book time is 7 hours. It sounds like quite an expensive job. Very impressed how you solve problems. Well done to both for your perseverance.
Brian
Well done 😂 you both with patience and determination consistently knowing what you both were doing with confidence, amen gentlemen and Godbless🙏
Great pair of guys, he'll of a characters, I would trust more than the local garages around where I am. Keep up the good work and making us laugh.
You work so well together, great workmanship !
Thank you!
There's an easy remedy for the owner to avoid this in the future. Trade the manual car in for one with an automatic. Easy, peasy and done.
Brilliant work men! Step by step until everything obstacle is conquered.
Thanks for this video. Very interesting to see the whole job done, and with the problem solving bits too.
Thank you very much!
Well done guys you really know your stuff…! Love watching your videos and seeing what it takes to fix problems…’ great channel ❤
Thank you!
Well done lads 2 hard workers & problem solvers
We try our very best every time!
Just found your channel. And what a great find it is the honesty is amazing which i personally find refreshing. If it wasn't filmed said customers would think you guy's were telling porkies. Keep up the brilliant content lad's
She did say that to us 😭
@@themarvelousvlog 💯👊🏽
Another great video. I love how you demystify the workings of a car.
We try our best’ thank you!
Great video. I have seen and heard drivers who ride or overuse the clutch, as you have described. Some people learn through their pockets. Well done on fixing the car.
Well said!
not a mechanic just find what you do interesting and they way you present it keeps me entertained so thanks :)
Thank you! I reckon we can improve more on both the mechanic side and entertainment side. Thank you again for watching our video(s)!
Two talented and hard working young men making a living by doing tremendous work. Nice one boys.
Thanks a ton
Much prefer this style video. Great job boys
Thank you! We can improve on some aspects more. I enjoyed this better than multiple jobs to be honest. It gives better perspective on how we do the job and also shows the struggles etc…
In my opinion, showing it like this prevents customers from saying to their mechanics that it can be done in ‘15 minutes’ 😂
Great attitude and commitment to service.
Definitely like the highs and lows of a job start to finish the glitches are a learning curve and life’s full of them 👍🏼
Yes, but they're not the "highs and lows" of a job performed by a qualified, experienced mechanic. The video gave me the impression that a bunch of mates have watched a few too many Mat Armstrong videos and thought they might try to make a buck out of being cheap ass backyard mechanics.
@@djshotty qualifications mean shit! You learn in the job even as an apprentice to gain qualifications anyway and no one knows everything about every vehicle. Everyday is a learning day and if you don’t learn anything it’s a day wasted. Matt Armstrong isn’t qualified but still learns on the job!
😂😂😂 this guy
@@themarvelousvlog the guy is a 🤡 🤷🏽♂️🤣

Nice that you show us the problems and how yo fix. Also you seem to be enjoying the work
Think you two guys are gonna have your own TV show one day... Love you vid, was going to get a Mini and you were very informative.. Great work...
Wow , great job the both of you have great patience, looking forward to the next video.👍
More to come!
Hi Lucy nice to meet you in the Roman restaurant me and my wife was talking to you saying we had never seen you before in Benidorm, I did not realise what work and camera work you put into each video, hope to see you again it was nice to see ourselves on the video ,keep up the good work take care Allan and Noreen from Doncaster
This is why I’m seeing soo many BMW minis for sale at very cheap prices. Great work guys 👍🏻
Hi guys cracking video very hard work on you two keep the videos coming great stuff 👍
🫡 we’ll keep pushing!
It's possible the customer isn't actually lying about riding the clutch, if the clutch was starting to slip and the customer continued to drive the car the clutch would get extremely hot, probably more so than riding the clutch, I've seen ring gears fall off the flywheel due to the heat generated by a slipping clutch (they tend to be an interference fit and are heated to get them on the flywheel (or the flywheel is chilled) once they return to normal temperature they won't come apart(without heating) outcome is the same excess heat causing further damage
I forgot to mention, for whatever reason, there’s a pedal extension installed 🤔
But yes, I do not deny this; it could have happened. We can only guess really 🧐
@@themarvelousvlog Is it heavy? Perhaps the weight of it is causing the same thing.
i lost a ring gear on a peugeot 205 just driving normally .... shit happens
Mobile mechanics are a different breed. Having to do stuff like this on a driveway or roadside! I wouldn't like to do that job in my workshop.
Top work there lads fair play doing it on the floor 👌👍
Easy! Well done boys that was some serious work
Yes guys you are a great team.
Man that clutch was literaly toast! Glad I found y'alls channel. You guys are a trip man!😅
We TRY to keep it as professional as possible but still get the work done the same standard
Thank you!
good job guys, loving the content!
Glad you enjoy it!

A VERY GOOD & enjoyable video 👏👏👏 great how much work you showed as well.
Thank you martin!
Nice vids mates! Keep it coming!
Well done lads.
I like the new Mini but after seeing that clutch change I’ll never buy one!
Had the original Mini and changing the clutch was simple!
My son changed one without dropping the motor, quite an achievement I think.
Thanks guys love your clips
This is great lads. Great banter 😆👌
Brilliant job . Well done guys.
Thank you!
Very amusing and informative. Well done lads...
Thank you!
Amazing job, fair play lads
Hi everyone what's the best to remember how to put everything back together like a clutch in this video, apart from recording it, or experience please, because there's always a bolt or screw etc you might forget where it goes, any good tips will be appreciated from someone who has been there and done it and now does not get confused how to put all those washers, screws, bolts, bungs etc again when they take a vehicle apart to do a big job like a clutch etc, I hope that makes sense. Best of luck everyone especially to the great boys sharing their work.
yes keep doing it that way its the way to go bro
I'm in Texas and I really enjoyed this video, keep it up guys!
Thank you! 🫡
Fantastic work guys, more power to you from Melbourne Australia..........................
Thank you very much!
Good job guys
Well done lads, credit to you doing mobile. Always frustrating when you need parts you can't get, I'm not a motor mechanic by trade but mess with cars at the weekends but I was a tech for commercial textile manufacturing equipment travelling the UK and Europe and the feeling when you think you've covered all bases with spares and find that one thing you need you don't have with you...urgh. There's no other feeling haha.
Enjoyed this one, keep up the great work and content. Subscribed, thought I was already but there we go. Algorithm for you after all this time 👍👍👍
Thank you mate. Will keep stretching the bones whilst young and rest later 😁
Lads what a good job well done keep it up
Another great informative honest video. When are you opening your own garage as you won't be short of work.

Well done guys, 1st class.
Glad you enjoyed it
You are great mechanics fellas. Good vid too.
Thank you!
Well done, lads. The clutch was well knackered. That’s a trouble when people ride the clutch good job done.👍👏👍👏🍺🍺⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Not sure why, ended up on this video.
The title is a bit clickbaity, but the video is very informative and honest. Real solid, good camerawork. I like it.
Thank you!
Ha ha "just wafer thin" 😯 like watching your finds... Keep them coming 🤣
That mini needed a match putting to it before you opened your toolbox!!!!
Great video lads
😂
Greetings from across the pond! I rarely have the opportunity to drive a manual transmission passenger car. But when I do, I never ride the clutch. I ride motorcycles and try to use the clutch as least amount as possible. I enjoyed your video.
Great job guys
Thank you 🫡
Imagine the smell of that burning clutch every time she sat there riding it. Hopefully she knows now not to do that any more.
You guys are great, I wish I had the mechanical knowledge (and courage) to tackle a job like this.
Fair play to u 2 working on that mini👍👍
We try! We will definitely do it again
Love this video very challenging and suspense
Very entertaining and informative Guy's.. I changed loads of clutches on original BMC/BL Mini's, but never seen one of these BMW types. To do that job without a four post lift and outdoors was a great achievement. Nice to see the process from diagnosis to finished job. I'm still trying to work out how the owner managed to take the clutch to that unbelievable state without some prior warning being noticed..
She probably ignored the lovely scent in her cabin 😂

Class video boys, think she was too embarrassed to admit she was clutch riding 😂
😅
Excellent video ,watching this while on my lunch break and my wife even got interested,as we have the same car ..
Thank you! Hopefully doesn’t happen to yours!
that must have been an insane amount of clutch riding to do that!
My countryman all4 clutch has grenaded and watching this I'm very very glad I've paid someone to replace it!
Guys well done, that is the most trashed clutch I have ever seen.
Please add another support under the car just in case . I know someone who had a Ford crush them as jacki g point was rotten. Love your honest videos
One careful owner eh lol
Nice video once again. Love watching this type of one job videos and even things that go wrong. Honestly if you were nearer I would have you do my clutch 👍🏻
Thank you! We will be doing tour soon
I've seen this before with a shorter lady who had pedal extensions, just the weight of the extension seemed to be enough to slip the clutch slightly, but for all the time it was driven.

Yeah impressed few minor mistakes but if you've not done that car before hats off you made it look easy concideting you spend half your time on your back.
