  • When it rains it pours! Just like this customer that I had... He literally spat on my experience and knowledge!
It seems like this was a Qashqai type-of-day. We had to replace brake pads and discs on a Qashqai J11 and a Stop-start fault diagnosis on another Nissan Qashqai J12.
Luckily for us, we managed to dodge the heavy rainfall; and thankfully managed to complete the jobs!

U treated that brake job like it was your own sports car, sublime. Garages whether Kwik shit or main dealers are job in job out - no cleaning of calipers or lubing of slide pins, your work is incredibly professional there, really impressed - from a retired Vauxhall, Rover & AA Patrol Technician.
One thing - don't leave your van door open like that, other videos show so easily tools stolen by scum walking past vans like that & your back was turned away many times. Great video

Nice to see a young lad doing the job properly. There's so many quick fit centres and garages that change pads in like 20mins and you think no way have they cleaned and lubricated all the parts they needed to. I have fitted plenty of brakes in my career as a mechanic. And it does take a long time. Removing the scale from underneath the stainless shims etc. And removing the sliders. In the garage we always done this and tbh we didn't have anyone return with noisy brakes etc. That's why these Quick Fit centres make so much money. They DO NOT spend the time cleaning. And I worked on the opposite side also as in a parts supplier and some garages saying the pads are not fitting and they have to grind the end of the pads down to fit them!! NO!!. this is what this lad is saying. You never need to do that. Unless obviously the wrong pad has been supplied. It's because of the rust build up jamming the pad. Keep up the good work. 👍

Sadly this goes both ways. Sure, for an established national company its a different story and work should be carried out best as possible.
However the majority of garages in the uk have awful customers who want to pay the lowest of the low price. I used to take 30-45 mins repairing and cleaning brakes to perfection and not only would the locals pay less but they’d also complain about how much time it took 😂😂
These days a car will come for brakes and i’ll have both sides down in 10 mins with only the sliding pins and pads slightly greased. The customers are happy but unaware/don’t seem to care about the long term issues it will cause later on. Its a shame the majority of the trade has been poisoned by silly people

Good tips from a fellow mechanic, 1 tip for you, get a plastic tray like a big shallow plant tray to put under the work area to catch rust, brake dust, brake cleaner etc, some people are picky about their driveways so it may save you some hassle and headache in the future, rags will work too but may get soaked if it's raining or need a lot of brake cleaner etc.

Tip of the day : Get some HSS 7,8,9,10 mm drills , grind the tips flat , then you can use them , in your electric drill to get the really stubborn old grease out of the caliper carrier slider pin holes. And with no tip 1 you won't drill a hole and 2 you will get to right the bottom of them.

In these days the whole U.K. is suffering, you will come across more often, people will refuse to pay , and for that amount you wouldn’t go to courts , will cost you more in the end . Just trust me , you got to become smarter than your clients .

No way would i pay upfront, far too many cowboys in the motor and building trades. As you said dont trust anyone! This has gone on for decades the UK has always suffered. I can recall times when employers wouldnt pay you! At least these days they have instant credit facilities on their cards!
      1. If the customer doesnt pay he has the right to remove the parts because he still owns them until he gets paid. (If the car is in a garage keep the car as articifers lien until bill is paid.)
      2. He has a channel following so name, shame, number plate the none payer.
      3. Small claims court isnt expensive and any none payer has to reimburse costs. Simple procedure on the internet, lawyer not required.
      4. ALWAYS get what you intend to do, the parts you will use to do it and the cost, in writing. Agreed and signed by the customer so no mind changes or arguments later.
      5. ALWAYS tell them call out fees and if you cant fix the problem, (if the fail to fix isnt your fault) they still pay for the time at £X per hour fir the time assessing. Again agreed and signed for BEFORE you start the job.

Before I change any pads I always slacken the master cylinder cap first, I do that just in case somebody has topped up the fluid level when the pads are low, so when you push the caliper piston in the excess fluid has nowhere to go & can push the seals in the master inside out resulting in no brake pedal, I have had it happen a couple of times over the years so thought i'd share that with you.

    Good video!
    Good work!
This is why I don’t advertise for work - I’m fortunate enough to just do word of mouth work which means 99% of customers are sensible/accommodating.
Most people think mechanics are people they don’t have to pay, and mobile to them means cheap and convenient. Probably said this before.
Anyway, keep it up! I enjoy watching your videos, even though I do the same stuff as you most days! 😂
I suppose it feels like I can relate because most of my trade friends work in workshops, and I’m mobile like you!
And good luck avoiding the non payers/time wasters! - I have a list at the moment of ‘when you got 5 minutes to drive 20 mins and check out why my car doesn’t start after my mate worked on it’ jobs at the moment! I love it when I can’t get to them for weeks and they get upset because it’s all my fault! 😂🤦‍♂️

I'm just a retired humble DIY driveway guy that dabbles in cars and have done since my first car in the 1980's (Mk3 Cortina 2.0L GXL 😀). I followed a different path in my work life but still kept my hand in and have amassed a large collection of tools and other kit (including a portable car ramp). I get plenty of friends and neighbours that come to me saying one of their other friends tried fixing this or that and its worse can I help?
They can't get a good mechanic out for a week or more simply because the best mechanics are the ones with a waiting list! This is where the bulk of my weekend "work" comes from.
Its more a hobby to me and I enjoy it and am also realistic about my skills as to what I can do and what I can't do. One thing I would never do is take work from a working mobile mechanic, I have had to say no to several people because they came to me first instead of calling a proper mechanic out.
I have a couple of numbers I hand out and refuse to work on a car unless its for family only unless they have called out a mobile tech first.
Just my principals at work there, because I wont take money from a working person who needs to support their family (not that it probably makes much difference!).

I was always taught to take off the runners and wire brush the rust under them on the mounting bracket. Once it is clean spray some zinc paint and put back the clean runners. If you do not clean the rust off under the runners what happens is that rust builds up and pushes the runners so that the pads no longer move freely.

Do a brake roller test to find out it needs more adjusting, remove wheels and then try and adjust it through that tiny hole on the discs, one click down too loose, one click up the wheel doesnt turn, absolute nightmare hate these qashqais. Genuine question what is behind your Pagid quality claims? Mechanic friend of mine swears by them too but I'm less convinced. I've used so many brands over the years yet I've only ever had warped discs twice, both times were Pagid. Once on a CLK and once on a Civic Hybrid. My go to brands for brakes over the years have been Ferrodo, Blueprint, ATE but would choose most over Pagid after the warping issues I had.

A metal disc is a metal disk, Brembo is no better than any other make in that department, their master cylinders and calipers are usually better than others as the designs are different internally. Leave the WD-49 alone on the brakes, clean them up with brake cleaner, then spray/wipe the rubber boots/seals with some silicon grease to keep them in good condition, obvs wipe off any excess.

I'd bring the boys around and start unpicking the work until they pay! Some I know where non payers are becoming more frequent now charge a refundable holding deposit which is almost the same as paying in advance. It's one thing to be a tight a*rse and skimp on maintenance but out of order to refuse payment when you eventually get round to having work done.

These cheapskate entitled customers get my goat. Just remember that the "call out fee"is to knock on the door only. Does not include an investigation fee. If the customer wants to do the job then the investigation fee can can deducted from the job but make sure you list the investigation as a line item on the bill otherwise they think the investiagtion is free (unless that is your policy)
