Rain or shine we will always push through. Here we have a VW Polo with what seems to be an Alternator fault. We then found out that there is something very serious going on under the bonnet.
We then followed this job up by replacing a throttle body on a Peugeot 207(?) as it was not revving at all.
Later in the video is a subscriber's car that was full of faults. We performed a full service, full brake service and loads of other tiny little things like replacing the steering wheel and diagnosing an ABS fault.
Because you guys are so nice, another subscriber then asked us to replace his clutch and dual-mass flywheel due to a severe interior vibration in the cabin.

The battery draining on the cement floors is a very very old thing. Batteries used to be encased in wooden boxes, and moisture from the floor would cause wooden box to wrap, allowing the glass cells to shift and break.
This is not an issue anymore and hasn't been for many years lol
Thanks for explaining that lol
THANK GOD YOURE ALIVE! 😂 Been looking for someone to know something about this. Tried searching google, can’t find something concrete 😂
Literally just wrote my comment on this and then saw your comment! 🤦♂️😅👍
yep, google battery on concrete, you'll get lots of hits and the OP is correct
Any battery stored on a cold surface will lose charge a little faster than on a warmer surface, although it'd take a long time to notice. A battery on a concrete floor in winter can crack due to freezing, but the temp has to be well below normal freezing point, as the electrolyte has a lower freezing point than water. Just good practice to store on wooden shelves, and up off the floor, just on a block of wood is fine. No issues while just replacing the clutch, although if placed on wet grass, it'll get dirty.
In a profession that is rife with incompetence and dishonesty, it is refreshing to see two mechanics behaving with integrity and showing respect for their customers. I do wonder how many mechanics would have taken advantage of the alternator fault and fitted a new one. Nice to see some good old fashioned fault finding too. That is becoming a thing of the past. I wish you two guys well. You deserve to succeed.
I can’t lie, it would have been a good profit if it was actually the alternator but hey, I’m sure they’ll get in-touch again as I’ve won their trust 😬😁
@@themarvelousvlog Yes, you could have had your customers pants down for a new alternator and had a few quid. This way, hopefully you have a long term customer. Oh,and being an old guy, when you say 'a 240', that means a 70s and 80s Volvo to me 😊.
@Nick-bp7jf just like most professions that aren't strictly regulated unfortunately 😕
Even manufactures aren't honest with their customers
Apprentice mechanic started in 1968 and one of the first things i learnt along with how to make tea was that batteries should rest on wooden slats when removed from a vehicle and not on the cold floor. But remember that was old fashioned battery technology and things have changed a lot since then.
If you're worried about draining battery on the. Floor just put a bucket under it to catch the electricity make sure to use a funnel when refilling
Also after refilling make sure to shake the battery vigorously for 15min to evenly distribute all the power as it can all settles at the bottom.
Was a pleasure having you round working on the Merc, I appreciate you guys showing how the service is done and all! Hopefully I wasn't too annoying 😂 anyone looking for a callout mechanic I highly recommend
Great to have you there mate! We will see you tomorrow 🫡
@@themarvelousvlogAlthough I do all my own car and maintenance work and that of friends and family, I could really do with you guys to remove the rear wheel hubs on my 2002 Mercedes SLK 320. I need to change the backing plates on the rear as they are rusted out. I have genuine Mercedes parts to replace them but I cannot for love nor money get the hubs off to change them!
I have bent 2 hub pullers trying to remove them and even made my own out of 6mm hardened steel plate and bent that too! But you guys are too far from me. None of the local garages I've asked will remove the hubs to replace the backing plates unless they buy them, and they will buy cheap parts not Mercedes parts like I have. The excuse is that I might buy the wrong parts and cause them trouble. I just think its profit driven because they can see the parts before hand and check, but there we are!
This is my project car so I also have to replace most of the suspension arms on the rear too which is much easier with the hub and backing plate removed! I'm open to all and any suggestions on how to get these bloody rear hubs off!
HEAAAAAATTTTTTT LOADS OF HEAAATTTTT! Get yourself MAP Gas (closest you’ll get to Oxi). Get it red hot and use a slide hammer
@themarvelousvlog I have an oxypropane torch, also have map gas, which would be better (or use both 🤣.
I also have an induction heater with enough wire to do a couple of Wraps round the hub, is that likely to melt anything important or should that be ok? I'm lucky to have a pretty well stocked garage for a home DIY wanna be mechanic lolill get it on the ramp and try heat! If thats not successful, I'll comment again on another video and ask for more ideas 🤣
Looking forward to it haha!
For a young guy you are so experienced and intelligent when it comes to diagnose issues and getting on with the job. And no bullshit! Good for you mate! 👍👍
We try mate! Thank you 🫡
Great video I like your ‘do not replace parts unless absolutely necessary’ analogy
Great series of videos. Really honest and at the heart of everything is the basics being done really well. A sign of a great Mechanic and his super-duper assistant. keep them coming guys, its really great to see.
My favourite car maintenence /repair program. You mix humour with knowledge and competance.Keep them coming!
HUUGGEEE! Compliment! Thank you 🫡
My new favourite channel. Wish you success.
Thank you! We will always try our best 💪🏽
Brilliant video, nice to see people enjoying their work 👍
Excellent work Wish I Had you working for me Before i retired from the garage Trade It was impossible finding Someone who wanted to Learn and Obviously you are both Top Mechanics and work well Together and know you're Stuff and Fair with the customers, Hopefully you are Charging what the job is worth as one Day you will require another van and Tools Don't Last Forever 😢 Why Don't you Get A Gazebo or a Clark Mobile Garage when it is Raining keeping you and the car Dry ,You will pay a high price later on in Life when you're Body is Aches and pain which is the Mechanics Downfall and by 45 you will start getting the Old guy feeling that Decided i was out of it before i was 50 😢 Good Luck Credit to the Motortrade Both of you ❤
Just found your channel, loving the videos. Learning lots from them. I'm a DIY-home-mechanic but better with old motorbikes than cars. Hope your channel grows, you deserve it. John is funny :D
Love your videos, John is so naturally funny keep up the good work guys 😊
He’s THAT friend un(fortunately) 😂
We used to get told not to put battery’s on the floor as a small stone can pierce the the case with the weight but never heard of it draining the Barrett 😂😂
It's a real pleasure watching you guys taking on any work under any circumstances. Nothing is too big. I love that!
Some things are too big though. BMW timing chain for example. 😂
Top lads, really into watching your videos only found you last week on my tvs CZcams! Keep doing what you’re doing!
Looking forward to the 240i
Thank you mate! That 40i build is killing me!
You Guys make me laugh and seem to have twenty years experience so good. Dave from Crawley by the way I’m 72.
I think the battery and the ground thing is because electricity is always wanting and seeking the fastest way to ground out and discharge. Basically finding the path of least resistance to earth (as in the ground beneath our feet.) however, i cannot see a battery discharging faster if it's sitting on the ground, that's just silly, the difference would be so negligible it would be almost immeasurable. Unless you ran a cable from the positive terminal and buried it.
I friggin love your channel by the way. I wish you were closer to Nottingham, i need a good mobile mechanic right now.
Well done guys, keep up the good work. I have also bad experience on my Vauxhall Astra. I wish also to meet you soon. My Astra needs fixing.
Batteries nowadays with plastic casings (and not cracked) will not drain if you put it on the floor.
The very old batteries that could lose charge if put on a concrete floor goes back to when battery cases were made from porous rubber or wood and electrolyte could potentially create a path to ground, but this is going back to 1920/30s technology.
Top couple of guys…love watching your vids, wish you were in Birmingham, could do with someone as knowledgeable and trustworthy as you !
As always good stuff... 25 mins was gone in no time 😊😊
You guys should do a video about servicing the battery/recharging/revitalizing it.
I think it's a bit of an urban legend about a battery draining on concrete
its from when batteries were made of wood
You asked a question about a battery, so I googled it.
Through the years battery cases have been constructed using a variety of materials for the outer case-including wood, steel and hard rubber to name a few. Hard rubber can eventually deteriorate, develop cracks (no matter how small), and if placed on the damp ground or concrete, the battery can self-discharge.6 Dec 2022
Watching from Australia, working outside in UK weather looks miserable 😅.
It’s always miserable here! I’d rather Oz than UK for sure 😂
Nice to see someone not just replacing parts until it works 👍 you really need to get yourself a workshop, mate, and do mobile especially when the weather is good
We’re working on getting a unit. Just really difficult to find one
@themarvelousvlog you'll do really well mate. I have a local garage I use and trust him that much I never ask him for a quote as I know he's not going to rip me and my family off.
I worked with an old mechanic he always insisted putting something under a battery, Never directly on the ground, He always cleaned any dirt from on top of the battery between the poles to stop discharge. And now I do it all the time.
Love this channel, love you guys and can’t wait to see the 240 !! Glad to see you getting on in life. 👏👏👏👏👏
The 240i is giving me ball ache! 😂 It’s gunna be a very interesting content
got a u0401 on my transit abs ,if only it would make itself that obvious ,good work chasps
Cracking channel mate 🫡😎 im an auto electrician and really like your content..its made me realise why i dont miss doing gearboxes on the floor haha! Keep it up
I try to avoid them now 🥲😂
Yeahhhh buddy!!! Let F ing go boys!
Yes that's correct always put the battery on a piece of wood, putting it directly on concrete will discharge the battery.
Very funny when John pointed to the exhaust manifold when asked what charges the battery😂 . You're very good at diagnosing the faults and both know what you're doing. Most mechanics would have just replaced the alternator. Great video what camera do you use? I need to improve my video skills.
2 different cameras were used in this video. First 2 jobs was a Canon M100 and the rest is shot on iPhone
John is the guy when it comes to comedy 😂
You should’ve removed those contacts under the nut and cleaned them up and replaced them. Tanya batteries for next day delivery. Easy.
13:40 - Looks like it's a Mann Frecious Plus filter :) Good quality cabin filter I use on my cars too.
Always enjoy the content and am finally subscribed 😁
That's well appreciated! Thank you!
22:08 customer is correct the cold drains the battery so by putting it on the floor you're evidently aiding the process. That's why in most places are busy batteries get delivered they normally get delivered on a pallet or a plastic tray to keep them from touching the floor. just common practice
Broooooo you worked on my car last year you are local to me !! glad i found the channel
Feel free to contact us anytime haha!
Modern Lead Acid batteries draining on a concrete floor is an old wives tale with roots in some kind of truth. Back pre 1950's batteries were a different composition both inside and outside and the cold damp concrete used to damage both the outer casing and the cells. This is no longer an issue with preformed plastic cases and the modern style cell plates.
I have a 2009 BMW mini battery that I took off my girlfriends car in Feb 2023 that was still working kinda fine but after 14 years and 165,000 miles it was time to retire it. This has been kept on my garages concrete floor since I changed it. As of just now (I checked before I commented lol) it is still at 12.6v. I would say in the spirit of MythBusters, That myth is busted ;-)
Thank you for explaining that mate. I was so confused when I was told that it will drain (quite immediately) 😂
You are very similar towards Diagnose Dan who is a brilliant Diagostic mechanic who doesn't believe in throwing parts at it hoping it will rectify the fault.
Love the video bro very educating and interesting, what obd reader would you advise on getting for my sons birthday for around £400?
Just found your channel. Excellent many other good channels but nearly all USA. Geat diagnostic skills. Where are you based, London.
Those merc springs are a that to change though, the shockers suck back into the strut!
You need a popup gazebo in the van for rainy days.
Great work guys. 👍
That battery story at the end, I think he was confused between electrical ground and the ground that you walk on. Someone told him that if a positive is going to ground then the battery will discharge and he just heard wrong or understood wrong. Hey we all hear things from time to time and misunderstand so it’s not shame on him for making that mistake. Ground and Earth are both electrical terms and everyday terms that have different meanings.
Great fix
Thank you! 🫡
Great videos! It’s great to see young mechanics not taking the easy expensive approach of just swapping parts. Top work , keep it up
Thanks, will do!
i have done many clutches and fly wheels before and i have never ever heard of that if you put a battery on the floor it will drain i put loads of batterys on the flor and they hve never drained just by sitting on the floor .
I really should have recorded it 😂 It made me think about my life- like what have I missed? 😂
Regarding a battery draining if it is standing on the floor is an old idea. Much older batteries before plastic casings would overtime. But all batteries discharge, when are left for sometime anyway.
As an engineer myself, I can elaborate on the advice you received from the gentleman. Putting batteries on the ground, or "grounding" has to be done expertly, as to only ground one of the battery poles. Even modern battery chemistries like Lithium-based ones discharge at an elevated rate with both poles grounded. I thought you mechanics would have figured that out. Good work otherwise ; )
PSA engines are disposable. for UK weather it has to be a 190d
I have been told that storing batteries on a concrete floor is a big no. Something about the cold floor and the way they calsify.
I've heard the same 👍
Short term, no damage to battery, but long term exposure to cold floors will cause damage, all our batteries were stored on pallets,
Borg and Back parts (brake discs, and pads) is good quality?
I dont how true the battery thing is but in the last garage I worked in, the boss was adamant that leaving a battery on the ground does drain it.
You guys are fantastic.
In my experience a Peugeot is best fixed with a can of petrol and a match!
Sorry got no friends bro! 😂 naaaim getting them all to subscribe, love the content!
Now I can tell you watched all the way to the outro 😂😂😂
Thank you!
@@themarvelousvlog no worries g! Keep doing what you’re doing love tuning in
Wish you guys was I'm my area Yorkshire 👍
Love the channel lads but Tell us about your parking ticket
😂
Is there a white van out there without a parking ticket?! 😂
Got it whilst getting lunch 😭
Batteries can be put onto a dry flat floor is no stones or pressure points ; seen batteries with damage to underside and that's not good
Batteries are stored on wooden shelves for that very reason. Cold surfaces causes them to discharge
Will just add that batteries usually do discharge anyway and putting them on cold ground won’t make them go immediately flat as was maybe suggested by the man in the battery trade
Hello, do you work in the west London Area, ie Ruislip, or Ickenham ? Kind Regards Graham Tarling
Nice content
Battery on concrete thing I know loads of people have already said but an article I read on that referred to it as a zombie truth, it was true at one point but newer battery tech has totally thrown that out the water.
Gbu both
That car alternator nut must have been tightend using a wet cardboard socket.
That battery thing is a load ov shit it might go flat if u leave it on the floor for a year.keep up the good work lads
what diagnostic machine do u use?
22:22 Old old batteries used to drain from being on concrete, which is why in some old heads shops you'll see batteries on wooden blocks on the floor. Doesn't really happen now, more of a superstitious thing.
Wheat areas do you cover?...I'd definitely call you boys when i need work done.
We cover Herts, Sussex, Basingstoke/Reading and Northampton area
Buy yourselves a pop up gazebo boys
You can buy a gazebo for around £30 for those rainy days.
Bad lad 😮
After watching your video you spoke about putting a battery on the floor ok a battery should never be put directly onto concrete the reason for this is concrete is naturally very cold and it kills the battery after a short time cardboard, wood, rubber or a matt under it on the concrete is fine i hope this helps you Dean Philpott
Surely a massive lip on the brake disc is not an issue as long as the disc exceeds the manufacturers minimum thickness.
New here, thinking I'm going to like this creator, only thing I've ever heard about placing down a battery was, never store a battery on concrete flooring. Just saying.
Heard about not storing it on concrete floor. Funny thing was, it was out down on the grass and obviously wasn’t going to be there for more than an hour. I don’t know. Just had to respect my customer and put it on a plank of wood 😂
22:20 it's true that is why batteries always have a stand or on a rack
Should shocks not be replaced in pairs?
Why dont you bring a Gazebo with you for the bad weather
If you leave a car battery on a concrete floor, it will drain it if it’s on a piece of wood or a piece of carpet it’ll be fine
battery will drain if left on a cold floor or concrete. its true, but a few hours wont drain it.
Don’t think it will drain it though if it’s left there for 20 mins. Surely?
Defo invest in a Gazeebo.
Gotta be joking, battery gonna be drained!!!!!!🤣🤣🤣
Hi mate are you anywhere near Nuneaton? Ive just fitted new calipers and done a repair on one brake line as it was rusty, but after breeding the calipers my peddle is now spongy. I've bled many times but still no good. I think i need the master cylinder and abs unit bleeding. The system went dry bc of the bad pipe. How much to do it for me mate? My car is a 2003 audi a4 convertible 1.8t
What diagnostic is that ?
44cca def knakd but i think anything less that 50% is done
Hi! I just discovered your videos… really interesting. I was wondering what area are you operating… if is possible what is the price for and oil change and filters and for example brake discs and pads for a normal car not something special… something easy to reach and to do. I am just curious. All the best and many thanks
Based in Hertfordshire. Where are you based please?
Coventry. I just asked i’m curious about the prices…’labour mainly
Battery on floor, what he is saying is if you leave the battery on a surface which is cold it discharges the battery, its good practice to use cardboard, wood etc. Being a mech u knows what cold does to a battery, just like noobs using rattlers on locking wheel nuts😂😂 jokers, I use a half inch impact driver with like ur turbo socket and a big lump hammer, heat back of hub if u can and gibe it a good smack. 9 out of 10 come loose, keep up the good work both yall, testing b4 replacing👍👍👌
The video title is a bit misleading. You not only confirmed the battery was dead on the red VW, you also fixed the root cause of the dead battery so you left the car in a better condition than when you started and the customer is going to source their own battery. I've had to replace the front springs on my own Mercedes W204. They're an absolute pig to change so I eneded up farming the job out to my mechanic. I'm surprised at the lack of availability of those W204 parts. You guys know what you're doing.
Is there concrete evidence on the battery being discharged like that? 😂
all these broken spring are due to speed humps and pot holes🥲
What Autel OBD scanner do you use
MS919
What's up with the B58 M240i, I know you gotta work too but thought we'd have some more progress by now, you stuck on something or just waiting on supplies?
Waiting on parts mate. Its been a pain 😀😂
@@themarvelousvlog Yea thought as much, it gets like that sometimes, Rome wasn't built in a day after all haha! Coolio looking forward to it anyway, stay safe and keep having fun....👍👌👍
