"From the deepest desires often come the deadliest hate." - Not exactly sure I understand what that means, but it sounds deep and makes me seem more smart than I actually am. :)
That Dynamite Dux story really got to me. I was totally with you there man, the whole way. I knew how it was going to go down and I was genuinely saddened. :(
I've been watching all your videos in the last 24 hours for the first time...you are amazing man!!! We are so similar...you speak for the nostalgic gamer and you recall your memories so vividly. Really happy I found you. I'm 25 and we share so many memories, I feel like we grew up in the same glorious days of gaming.
I just discovered your channel (fellow Phantasy Star SMS fan) and have been binge watching since. You tell the best stories of anyone on CZcams. Great stuff
I've run into your videos before, but truly: Thank you, so much, for not only promoting a positive attitude, but also the value of sharing the STORIES behind games. You are a real ally on the scene.
Not sure if you knew this but Beyond the Beyond was made by Camelot Software Planning, the studio behind the Shining series, Golden Sun series and the Mario Golf games!
Johnny, you are the best reviewer alive. I enjoyed your stories a lot! That secret DD pillar is probably the single most hilarious and awesome thing I've ever seen. Thanks for sharing
Wow bro i was laughing my stomach out watching the Dynamite Dux part. Hilarious i tell you. You Rock Johny. U made my day after a labor filled day. Thanks
Lagoon! It was the first RPG I played I think. I have very faint memories of it, but I remember liking it somewhat. But I was like 8-9 years old so maybe I had low standards.
+Derek Kunze Back at that time (1992, i was 13 I think), my older brother bought a bunch of games. Too bad (or too good, it depends) most of them were very hard: Double Dragon 3, T2 and Prisoner Of War, among others. Many years later I bought Battletoads, and now I can proudly say that I finished that game with no warp zones and no 2nd level crow exploit :D
stonerdemon ya i recently beat Zelda 2 without state saves, or guides.. one of my favs. btw your picture from Ren and Stimpy? looks like the dad from the episode where they visit their number one fan..just a guess
+Derek Kunze Hahahaha, yeah, he is Anthony's Dad!!! I just love Ren & Stimpy. The SNES games kinda sucked, but the cartoon show is the most revolutionary since the Looney Toons, in my opinion. Check an online store called 80stees, they're offering a nice R&S tshirt for $20.00 with free shipping. I'll buy it this week :D
I hope no one hunts me down for this, but one game that I really hate is the original Zelda. I remember getting it in 86 or 87 and just not getting what my friends where so hyped about. I played it a bunch at first trying to get into it and so I would know somewhat what my friends where talking about it never happened. I have tried to play it a dozen or so times over the last 25 years, and I dislike it as much today as I did thin. With that being said A Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time and Wind Waker are three of my favorite games.
I've played and finished Zelda 1 100%, but I think it is very poorly made. The fact you needed to buy a guide to actually know how to play it or what the fuck you are suppose to do is utter bullshit, thankfully, I played it in the era of the internet. Thank you internet. But its still bullshit.
randomenvelope You didn't need a guide. I played it without one. Including the second quest. It's still entirely valid to dislike it. I can understand why. But it's not badly made at all.
You don't NEED a guide but you were in for some insane amount of exploring if you decided not to and the fact you needed the light arrow to kill the final boss and there is NOTHING that tells you about it in game is bullshit! and also random walls being bomb-able or random burn-able trees I find is also lame, but most of them are just secret rupees, but some are heart containers. You can like it for all I care, I didn't say I dislike it, I just think its poorly made. I knew what I was supposed to do so I mildly enjoyed it. But I think it ages as well as a carton of milk from the 70's
Oh no you don't! Don't you dare try to get out of the ass whooping you're gonna catch by pretending to like the other Zelda games!!! You already committed heresy by hating the original so don't you dare think you can redeem yourself with such a disgusting lie you pig!!!! Lol nah dude I understand your hatred of the original. I personally loved it and played it religiously after I got it for christmas the year it came out but man I tell ya, when you saved your game with like 12 hearts and came home from school to play it only to find that the god damn battery back up failed and erased days/weeks worth of exploring and devotion WASTED!!! Haha so it's not so hard to imagine the original Zelda being disliked. Tell me though, anything specifically you disliked about it other than what you already mentioned?
I would say it is more open ended. It is supposed to be an adventure of your own not a guided quest. A Link to The Past catered to people on both sides of the coin a bit better but that is why many adored the game.
dynamite dux looks ok in the arcade version, not a good game but had interesting death animation for the enemies, music is good at least the first level sounds like a ripp of dave theme from maniac mansion which is the best video game music ever.
THey can dislike if they want, that it all fair. They just shouldn't get angry or be mean. But pressing a dislike button? Well that's their prerogative ;). Likes or dislikes are really not that important :P. I mean.. it's lower on the ladder than your Neighbour having an opinion on the colour of your back scratcher ;).
DehnusNorder it just shows how close minded and how they are just unaccepting of a contrary opinion. Sadly the internet has created all these different bubbles where everyone reconfirms our opinion. So it makes people lash out when someone goes against their opinion. It is one thing to comment that you disagree. But to dislike the whole video because someone didn't like a game that you liked is absurd.
Dave Hobbs Maybe, but if people show a dislike, they throw a dislike. That is nothing important to worry about really. I mean, you have the same with people worrying about likes. Who cares that they "press a link" on the web ;). It's their problem not yours or mine ;).
Dave Hobbs Yes, but do you want to show up on the channels of those people? They dislike you already anyway for "not liking what they like". It will only get worse.
man i really enjoy all of your videos i wish u could make them more often but i know ur busy with your job and stuff. i really hope this show can get big enough so u can make a living from it someday.
aww, I actually loved Lagoon, me and my cousin would both play it, we'd watch each other play it and what not, and the bosses could have your arms shaking by the time you beat them.
Lagoon is more of an Adventure game than an RPG and it IS a great game. Absolutely love the music from the very first second you turn on the power until the The End screen. The only pet peeve I had with it was the single save file. Would've loved at least 2 files.
I had similar situations when I was younger as well. I think the best part of rental stores as they grew before the crash, Was renting a game before you bought it.
Haha, that Double Dungeons thing made me laugh. I was eagerly awaiting what you had to say about "Dynamite Dux", because I could see it on the pile. Great video Johnny!
Fantastic vid as always sir. How ironic too, that you would wear that Alex Kidd shirt, since you vocalize exactly how I felt about that series in this video. Hated it so much back when it was fresh, but now I've become more of a fan. Same thing with Super Hang-On; it just seemed impossible back when it came out on the Genesis (as a kid), but nowadays I'm a huge fan of it.
by that time when no reviews on game, before I buy games on my SNES, my friend and I always went to National Bookstore, a store where we can only find some video game magazine, that time you can peak on a magazine if not sealed and see if what game is new and good then put it back and start hunting for that game.
Come on, Dynamite Dux is really cool.. I mean, I never actually bought it, I've rented a few times. Was it hard to find SMS games for rent around there?
Had to look up a longplay of Beyond the Beyond to see just how long it actually was, and it seems to take around 10 minutes from first entering the game world until you get control. Jeez, young Johnny.
When you said that back in the day we would buy games based on the box it reminded me of when I was a kid. I had just gotten a SNES and my mom took me to the store so I could pick up a game. I would only get two or three games a year (Christmas, my birthday, and something in the summer) so I was looking long and hard. I decided on Final Fantasy 2 US because the box art looked so cool. I was I think 12 at the time so I've played a RPG before. Luckily my gamble paid off, unlike your gamble with Dynamic Dux haha
I loved Lagoon! I remember renting in and couldn't live through the first dungeon. I rented it again from Blockbuster and got through the game in a week.
Ok, I don't know much about Dynamite Dux but just from the video the graphics look pretty good. Also how much were US Master System games? I remember them being around 70-80 dollars a game.
"Beyond the beyond" is my own version of Dynamite Dux. I saved up for months, got enough money saved to buy a new video game, took it home and played it. Hated every moment of it....Great video bro!!!
I went through the exact same experience as you with dynamite dux, you brought up a repressed memory i never wanted to resurface. I also bought it on the strength of the box art and screen shots on the back too
I thought Dynamite Dux on the SMS was great. The graphics were really impressive for the time. I found the music pretty good too. It was a very good conversion of the arcade. My only complaint was the SMS version didn't have 2 player.
I remember back in 1992, I spent a good chunk of the summer trying to beat Double Dungeons. Countless hours later, I finally beat the game only to get a bit of dialogue and a picture of the castle as the ending. Boy was that a waste.
I had the exact same experience as you with Lagoon, got it for my twelfth birthday if memory serves me right. It's definitely on my top 5 as well, and it's fun to see someone else talk about this game that I never heard anyone even mention since.
Croc The Legend of the Gobbos, I remember getting it when I was younger thinking that it was gonna be a lot of fun, it ended up being one of the most frustrating, infuriating platformers I have ever played.
A fellow TG-16 nerd -- man that's so cool to see. Right on, brother. I'm rebuilding my collection right now. Getting there! Your vids inspire me to soldier on!
It is a kinda old video but can someone tell me if Dynamite Dux for Master System was officially released in Canada? some soruces about SEGA say this game was not released in North America / NTSC region.
Another great video. I can't believe you scratched that disc! :D I had a similar experience as a kid jumping on a bus to a shopping center with cash to burn. I ended up buying Mission Impossible on N64 and it cost $109! (Australian dollars) Needless to say I rushed home, chucked it in the N64 and was sooo dissapointed! But a fun memory to have. :)
True story - I remember my nerve-racking experiences at TRU with the VG wall. They didn't even have box art only these plastic cards attached to the rack with information on the games. I still remember the time I passed on Y's III for SNES because I couldn't tell what it was about because of those stupid flappy cards. The struggle was real.
Ah yes i had forgotten about that scam with the cards...if i recall usually there was no art at all, just a white card with the title...horse****! ...better had read your EGM that month or you were screwed.
"From the deepest desires often come the deadliest hate." - Not exactly sure I understand what that means, but it sounds deep and makes me seem more smart than I actually am. :)
That wave goodbye to Double Dungeons at 9:08 makes me LOL every time...literally.
My brother bought Rambo 3 for SEGA Master System.
We didn't have Light Phaser.
+Angelo Blasi I had the Light Phaser.
But no games for it.
your double dungeons secret was the reason I now subscribed.
keep this show alive forever. great show as always! keep it up! your episodes make my day
So fun to read this comment 10 years later, as the show is still alive and better than ever. Johnny is a legend.
@@DadDude right. Man that makes me feel so old lol.

Yeah this dude has some awesome stories :)
You're Dynamite Dux story is eerily reminiscent of my Total Recall (NES) story. heh heh heh. Oh... foolish children.
***** and my Super Hidlyde for sega genesis. what a piece of sh$%!
Oh god.... It was garbage on every system!
Dynamite Dux the arcade game at least, was a pretty fun sidescroller, it's far from bad. as for the master system conversion i havent tried it.
This video really brings back memories!! Man I feel old! Good stuff mate!
I've run into your videos before, but truly: Thank you, so much, for not only promoting a positive attitude, but also the value of sharing the STORIES behind games. You are a real ally on the scene.

Love the re-purposing of Double Dungeon. It finally has a place in the universe.
Wow bro i was laughing my stomach out watching the Dynamite Dux part. Hilarious i tell you. You Rock Johny. U made my day after a labor filled day. Thanks
Poor guy, if only he played the arcade version of Dynamite Dux...
What's with all the hate for dynamite dux? i love that game!
I love all the stories you tell of all your game experiences. really funny stuff!
Haha, that Dynamite Dux story made my day. Another great video Johnny!
The arcade version of Dynamite Dux is a lot better. A little bit harder too
Lagoon! It was the first RPG I played I think. I have very faint memories of it, but I remember liking it somewhat. But I was like 8-9 years old so maybe I had low standards.
It was a brutally hard game, but once you beat that fucking owl at the end......Lol totally worth playing
If you say Dynamite Ducks in the dark in front of a mirror three times, a duck appears and makes you play bad video games.
That Double Dungeon reveal was priceless :) So funny!
Haha, i liked Dynamite Dux :-D both on Arcade, and SMS :-) Love the tune on first level haha :-)
T2 for NES was my experience... 50$ down the drain...never made it pass the second level with the Truck chasing you on motorcycle.
+Derek Kunze That level was nightmarish, but I think I finally beat the game at some point.
stonerdemon
I was around 6+ years of age..frusterated me to give up and just go back to Mario 3 :P
+Derek Kunze Back at that time (1992, i was 13 I think), my older brother bought a bunch of games. I just found this video (and channel) by chance. You're very interesting and have a good voice, HCG. Gonna check out your other stuff now.
Hahaha, I loved Dynamite Dux on Amiga 500!
Love your video!
I liked double dungeon.. Then again I liked super hydlide
Its fate is sealed! haha. hilarious.
Damn now the musics in my head! Btw. Nice job with that shelf. That game is evil!
Lol I can really relate to the dynamite dux story! Great video Johnny.
Beyond the Beyond was so bad I had my mom tell the store there were satanic things in it to get a refund. It was that awful.
I hope no one hunts me down for this, but one game that I really hate is the original Zelda. I remember getting it in 86 or 87 and just not getting what my friends where so hyped about. i had Dynamite Dux and i didn´t hate it so much :p
Is a matter of taste Dynamite dux was not a bad game at all.
Drebin Certainly no where near worth $90.
People who dislike a video just because someone doesn't like a game you do shows how narrow-minded people on CZcams are and unable to take an opinion.
THey can dislike if they want, that it all fair. They just shouldn't get angry or be mean. But pressing a dislike button? Well that's their prerogative ;). Dave Hobbs
Yes, but do you want to show up on the channels of those people? They dislike you already anyway for "not liking what they like".

LOL I remember subscribing to your channel from this vid when you show how double dungeons held up the shelf. Funny to go back.
Great memories. Love the way you bring your story
I think we all knoew what those last two games where going to be xDDD Great video man :)
this is a pretty cool idea for a video! Love the double dongens shelf story lol!
Haha great video man! I love the Double Dungeons story. Thankfully Beyond is a good game as I am looking forward to eventually getting to it!
It's amazing to me how far video games have come since the 80s and 90s.
man i really enjoy all of your videos i wish u could make them more often but i know ur busy with your job and stuff. i really hope this show can get big enough so u can make a living from it someday.
Did you ever but games from Consumer's Distributing? I remember looking at their games section of their catalogue every holiday season. Ahh memories.
One of my favorite episodes! Cool stories ^^

Dynamite Ducks is the shit! It makes Mario 3 look like those Olson Twin games for the Gameboy Color.
love ur alex kidd shirt how did u get it? i want one :3

Hilarious reveal and secret of the show there. Thanks for the laughs and the videos from Texas!
Fantastic video. Great fun listening to your gaming stories.

The dynamite dux bit is classic.
Had to look up a longplay of Beyond the Beyond to see just how long it actually was, and it seems to take around 10 minutes from first entering the game world until you get control. Jeez, young Johnny.
I love this video! I wish you did this more!
so many funny storys, i love it =)
Now i know why you asked me about Double Dungeons when i said something about your shelf a few months back. hahaha chills down my spine
When you said that back in the day we would buy games based on the box it reminded me of when I was a kid. I had just gotten a SNES and my mom took me to the store so I could pick up a game. I thought Dynamite Dux on the SMS was great.

Your Dynamite Dux is my Hydlide of the days back then.
I remember back in 1992, I spent a good chunk of the summer trying to beat Double Dungeons. Countless hours later, I finally beat the game only to get a bit of dialogue and a picture of the castle as the ending. Boy was that a waste.
Awesome show Johnny and Rob-man! Keep em coming! Greetings from the Netherlands!
You're exactly right-you bought a game back then based on the cover of the box! I totally remember doing that!
Great show Johnny. I enjoy every show makes me look forward Sunday to see the next show.
Ohhh snap on the back wall I see Mystic Quest and Secret of Mana side by side!!! You've won my heart
It is a kinda old video but can someone tell me if Dynamite Dux for Master System was officially released in Canada? some soruces about SEGA say this game was not released in North America / NTSC region.
Awesome! I love beyond the beyond, was actually gonna buy a boxed copy of lagoon with DJ last week and Pit Fighter is my Dynamite Dux! :)
Genuinely funny, and yes all serious gamers have anger management issues.
LOL the first game you pick up is lagoon witch ironically is the first game i thought of when hearing the introduction for the video!^^
great episode - I was cracking up.
My Dynamite Dux will forever be known as China Warrior on the Turbografx 16. Bought that solely based on the graphics on the back of the box.
Am i the only one hearing the Zelda sound of finding a secret room when he showed us the secret? :P
8:25
I didn't think you would ever dislike a game, you are such a happy person lol.
"...its fate is sealed..."
LOL! That's hilarious.
The Double Dungeons secret made me lol
Haha i love how double Dungeons is being trapped forever.
did ya ever play the GC or Wii FE games? worth a try IF you like that type of gameplay

I keep on looking at the gamecube controller behind him and I keep on thinking "WII U!"
Haha that double dungeons came to use after all.
youre just the most entertaining retro gamer for me, id like to see some gameplay that you comment.
