I wouldn't really say Beast Rider "killed" The Golden Axe series. It wasn't really even alive by that point and was just an attempted resurrection that failed. All had been quiet on that series' front for ages, it'd come and gone because there was nothing else to do with it.

Golden axe would be, potentially, the toughest update of all time.it’s just a beat-em-up, but with more ideas than almost any of game of the era. Like every screen of that game “suggests” something about that world. And that’s why it’s so great. But to EXPLAIN any of it would be wrong, in my mind.

I think the most dissapointing game for me had to be Perfect Dark Zero. The original on N64 is still one of my favourite games of all time. So I was pumped for the prequel on Xbox 360.
Once I got it, I was initially impressed with the intro and the graphics. But quickly realised that in every other aspect it was a HUGE step backwards.
They destroyed the franchise before it even had a chance to become a franchise.
    Heartbreaking.

    • @lyrand6408
      @lyrand6408 Před 2 lety +1

If I'm not mistaken PDZ was a prequel to the N64, and not a sequel per se. But I agree, there was hype for it at the time and it was supposed to showcase the strength of the XBOX 360 from what I recall. The critics back then did say that the graphics were good, but that the game was nothing compared to the original on N64 (which I also love still to this day). There's supposed to be a reboot of the Perfect Dark series with a new game, but there were news recently that this reboot is currently in "development hell" (but isn't cancelled, yet).

For me it was SimCity in 2013. I grew up on the Sim games and loved almost all of them, but SimCity '13 was the worst of gaming at the time. It shrank map sizes to make cities absurdly small and forced always online DRM for single player content (because everyone loves that) that rendered the game unplayable for weeks after launch. I hated Super Mario Odyssey. After the soaring heights reached with Galaxy 1&2, I was sorely disappointed in Odyssey. There was a shocking lack of platforming and parkour. It was more about finding a bump on the road to stomp on and get a moon. The only great platforming happened in the final level, darker side of the moon. There were only 16 levels, and some were small. All the music was forgettable, except cascade kingdom. And the cappie possessions did nothing for me. Odyssey was a black spot on an otherwise brilliant series (I even loved Sunshine.)

Gonna get hell for this. But Xenoblade Chronicles. I was super excited for this coming off of the Xenosaga trilogy, but it was some pseudo single player MMO style filled with side quests that are completely pointless for world building. Characters and world are great but the battle system ruins it for me

tho what's funny is i also played Xenoblade X on Wii U and found it to be a much better game in almost everyway (well expect story that part was kinda meh tho it had much better side quest) and that game is the black sheep of the series

    Mine are:
    - Far Cry 2 (Insanely monotonous in gameplay loop, tone and near non-exsistant boring story with a shit ending, perhaps the most over-rated game I know)
    - Dark Souls 2 (relies on ambush, mob spams and poorly implemented mechanics, couldn't even bring myself to play through the DLC's).
    - Fallout 4 & 75 (betrayal of the RPG roots and a embarrassment to the franchise, changing it from a grim, brutal world to one where it revolves around Harley Quinn humour with most of the focus on crafting and building.)
-Sea of Thives (Gigantic waste of potential of a good game, all content are fetch quests with different skins or raids with unfun weapons to use or if you're really unlucky, get PvP'd by the largest ship class get griefed and verbally abused without provocation and that is if you don't get your 15mins of earning treasure swiped from under you, so you ether get bored or rage quit).

-Paper Mario sticker star (ruined the series)
-Luigi's mansion Dark Moon (1 was spooky, dark moon turned every ghost into a goofball, the atmosphere is ruined in this game, and it carried over to the third)
-The new super Mario bros series (pretty much Nintendo's call of duty, reused assets, music and level design.
-Banjo Kazooie nuts and bolts (killed the series).
-Mario party 8 (ruined the series).
-for other consoles, pretty much everything EA, Activision and Ubisoft release.

I'm generally more positive about games these days as I get old and mellow out, but I have some that I hate:
Ocarina of Time-I totally bought into the hype, and loved all of the prior Zeldas other than Zelda's Adventure (yeah, I even like Wand of Gamelon and Faces of Evil). I reserved it, picked it up day one, and got very, very bored with the very slow pacing. I figured Nintendo could just about do no wrong, as Super Mario 64 was a knockout with great pacing and tons to be doing at every turn... but everything in Ocarina of Time felt like it took forever to me. I've gone back and tried again every couple of years, and no... it's the game that killed Zelda for me. I'm glad there are people who love it, but I'm not one.
Doom 3 VR-Very simply, no other video game has ever made me so motion sick so quickly. I played around with the options every way I could, but no. I can't play it unless I ant to vomit. I can play other VR games for long sessions easily, but not Doom 3... plus everything looks 3/4 size.
Metriod II (3DS remake)-They shoehorned stupid play mechanics and made it so linear that it killed the game for me. I was stunned rigid that the same people managed to make Dread fun, as I expected it to suck like this one, but at least I ended up really enjoying Dread... but Samus Returns can eat it. I'll stick with my black & white Game Boy copy.

EDIT: I know a lot of people love Smash Bros games, not trying to trigger anyone, it's just my experience with it and that series in general. Doesn't work for me at all. I'm sure there are people out there who feel the same about Elden Ring, a game I've been playing since it came out.

Listen, you don't want to know how long my first playthrough took me, I was VERY bad at it.
I can tell you I died 1800 times! But the art, the music, the way the game played, the story, all of it kept me addicted. So I wish it had an easy mode.
However, I eventually got good enough that I was able to get the achievement for beating it in under three hours.
Since you have a love for classic 2D Gaiden you should find Cyber Shadow a lot easier than I did on your first playthrough.
