      In the 90s you were not allowed to double a player without the ball. Doing so would result in a technical free throw. Iso players like Jordan, who could catch and shoot or shoot off of one dribble could thrive before the double or react to the double. The downside was that in the 90s a defender could hand check and steer you in a direction in the 90s and there was no three second rule. This meant defenders could steer you with a forearm on your hip and bigs could camp out in the paint as long as their offensive man was close by. Understanding history will give context to plays from each era.

    • @ducatister3674
      @ducatister3674 Před 5 měsíci +5

      @@mancycle1 Along with this; the Bulls ran the Triangle offense, which allowed Jordan to play off of the ball making a double team more difficult. He often would be doubled upon catching the ball, but with his quick first step and ability to score by taking just one or two dribbles, it was very difficult for a double or triple team to work. Also, even though the team was full of role players, they were a well-oiled machine, which ran flawlessly, so you could not sleep on anyone who played because they could score effectively if you doubled or tripled him, which is why he averaged over 6 assists while being the most dominant scorer in the league.

    My brotha, first, his favorite ring would be the fourth mainly because he won that on fathersday after returning from retirement. He cried on the gym floor for a good 3 to 5 minutes holding the ball as teamates celebrated, then tried to console him. Second, the highlights literally walk you, in timeline, thru his career. Third, he was the best overall defender I've ever seen. He terrified most if the league because not only could he outscore anybody but he could also shut the other teams top scorer down while doing it. Didnt happen often but when he got a bee in his bonnet, look out. They usually wanted him resting on defense which is why a lot of the shiwn defensive highlights are him coming out of nowhere to shut someone off from the hoop.

    Good at defense? He was the Defensive Player of the Year in 1988 (and the scoring leader with 35+ points per game). He also led in steals for three years and was a part of the NBA's first defense team nine times. At the age of 39-40, he neutralized Vince Carter when playing for the Wizards. In my opinion, he could be the best defender every year if he didn't focus on offense. He's capable of anything he wants. When he played as a point guard for several dozen games, he almost averaged a triple-double per game. He could have 8-9 rings: +1994, 1995, 1999.

    Jordan has dunked on almost every Hall of Famer from the 80's and 90's. That includes Shaq (yes, he got Shaq), Ewing, Mutumbo, Olajawon, Barkley, David Robinson, Bird, and Dr. Julius Irving (Rookie year against 76ers).
    The reason they couldn't double team Jordan is because of Phil Jackson's and Tex Winter's triangle offense. That prevented teams doubleteaming Jordan. Jordan used to get double teamed all the time between his 3rd and 5th years, especially with the Pistons. When Phil Jackson took over as head coach in 1990, he implemented the triangle offense to deter defenses on double teaming Jordan. It also helped that Pippen became a good player, Jordan bulked up (and never quit), and the Bulls started playing better as a team. I believe that the only player that was ever capable of guarding Jordan was Joe Dumars.

    3:16 Yes, most definitely. And on top of that his gigantic hands allowed him to have superior control of the ball. MJ has been blocked mid air and still get shots off. Insanity.
    3:54 Gerald Wilkins, John Starks, Gary Payton, Reggie Lewis, Clyde Drexler, Joe Dumars spring to mind that could slow MJ down. Now of course we all know MJ overall destroyed his opponents, but giving the respect that’s due - there were plenty of great perimeter defenders that could give MJ trouble. Overall in a series though MJ was basically unstoppable.
    7:20 MJ was elite defensively, easily top 3 perimeter defenders ever. Great on ball defense, help defense on centers, closed down passing lanes… he was basically Deion Sanders out there.
    11:23 My choice as the best 2-way player ever, which means he’s my GOAT. Haha.

    In the 80s, they double-teamed him the entire game, and he still managed to score 32-37 points per game. However, in the 90s, Bulls coach Phil Jackson introduced the offensive triangle tactic, rendering this defensive approach useless. Furthermore, the Detroit Pistons employed the 'Jordan rules' in the late 80s and in 1990-a robust defense marked by numerous hard and illegal fouls in an attempt to 'stop' him.

They played much more physical defense back then and he still just took people to task, so yeah, he was pretty much unguardable.
    The mental toughness, and competitiveness would have made him great even with average athleticism, but combine that with one of the most, if not the most, athletic and graceful humans to walk the planet and you get basically a superhero!

Missed 1 game one year & missed 2 games in the other. MVP, scoring title & DPOY in the same season. 10 time All NBA 1st team. 9 time All NBA Defense 1st team. 10 scoring titles. 6 Finals, 6 Trophies & 6 MVP of the Finals. Only 4 times did someone win scoring title, MVP, All NBA, All NBA Defense & the Finals trophy w/ MVP of Finals in the same season, in NBA history. All 4 times by MJ.
