It's the fact that all basketball players get compared to him, NOT anybody else. That's why he's the GOAT. Dude's career is a rabbit hole of basketball history.

Let there be no mistake. MJ in his prime was unstoppable. I have never seen that killer instinct, combined with his skills. Defense, attack.... MJ was the complete package. The real deal. The impact he had on the NBA. MJ made the NBA popular across the entire planet. Even my grandmother, who knew nothing from basketball, knew MJ. That's why he's the GOAT. Did you know that fans of the opposite team came to see MJ play and even cheered for him? MJ is the GOAT, nicknamed Black Jesus, or we used to say, "There is God, and there is MJ." You should have seen him play in his prime. I just could not believe my eyes.
Truthfully, I never paid attention to the NBA. But one day, I was watching tv and a commercial came on, and this guy jumped from the free throw line, sort of wiggled through the air, and dunked the ball. I asked my nephew who it was, and he said, "Thats MJ. Michael Jordan." From that day I was a Jordan fan. One of his best shots ever; never seems to make the high light reel. It was against Portland regular game. MJ received the inbound pass from Pippen and was bringing the ball down court, no one was near him. MJ tripped over his own feet, slid into the lane, threw up the ball and made the basket. My Mom said, "Did he just fall over his own feet, and still make the shot, while sitting on his ass?" I said, "Yes, Ma'am." And from that day we were both MJ Fans.

I got to watch his whole career. The man had NO weaknesses.
I had the pleasure of seeing jordan live at the old Chicago stadium and the united center. Games in the old Chicago Stadium were electric. Pre-retirement jordan was pure athleticism. If his shot wasn't falling, he'd drive to the basket and either make the shot or get fouled. Post baseball Jordan used his basketball IQ as well as his athleticism to pick teams apart. He wore 45 because his number had already been retired when he came back for the last 18 games of that season. My brother's mother in law would give us tickets during the last 3peat. Imagine watching jordan live courtside.... You should watch michael jordan voyager for more highlights or jordans best season 90-91 for more game sequences. The younger fans think we hate on Lebron. It's not hate we just got to see the most complete baskeball player. What other player won league mvp, allstar mvp, defensive player of the year, the scoring title with over 200 steals and 100 blocks in the same season.

All true, but you didn't mention how much MJ elevated other areas of his game once his athleticism had started to decline. That second 3-peat would have never happend if MJ hadn't become one the deadliest midrange shooters by relentlessly working on that part of his game during the offseason (and the regular season and play-offs, pretty much non-stop). He also added a really nice post-up and floater game to his reportoir - or rather, he always had those in his bag but went to them more in his later years, making him arguably even less defendable than before because of his crazy versatility.
I was there during his run in the championships. Like Barkley said “He Is Amazing!!! Everything you see now , he did then and blew everyone’s minds!
We were truly blessed here in The Chi! I simply loved the way Kobe described MJ. He said "There are no wasted movements with MJ. He was precise and intentional about every move! Flawlass!"

Once he got that first Chip, he became so consistently deadly, man. It was unreal, honestly. No matter what had gone on before in the game you just knew that he would very likely win it in the last 5 minutes of the game.
He was the sheer definition of clutch. His ability to hit game winning shots was so crazy that you honestly stopped being surprised by it. It was like, you knew there was a 99% likelihood that he was gonna do whatever was needed get the W, ESPECIALLY in the playoffs!

Mj makes you love the sport. His competetiveness. The killer instinct.When he's on the court, it feels like you're with him. So proud to witness his greatness. The reason why the value of every jordan shoes are worthy of it.
What makes MJ so great are his actual skills. One particular skill that is very underrated is his movement without the ball. The way he uses screens, gives little fakes to lose his man, etc. In his last year with the Bulls, MJ averaged holding the ball for just 3 mins 45 seconds per game and still scored just under 30. So each quarter he held the ball for just a little over 56 seconds. Crazy stuff.
I love this comment so much. This is something I NEVER hear anyone talking about. It's the equivalent to giving the video editors, lighting guys and sound engineers due credit for a fantastic film, rather than the obvious and typical credit given to the onscreen actors and well known directors. @@masterreaper115 He wasn't primarily a dunker, that's a myth. He was a mix em up player from the start who dunked, laid the ball in, shot the midrange, posted up, shot the long ball, etc. Scored in a variety of ways.
One of the most impressive aspects of Jordan despite the most impressive of accolades was his willingness to play every game. The only games he sat out were games he was injured. No load management! MJ’s mentality was he wouldn’t deny a kid who’s parents brought them to a game the chance to watch him play. The unquestioned GOAT!

My favorite Jordan story: I believe they were playing the Utah Jazz and Jordan gets a dunk on the Jazz's point guard. Who was about half a foot shorter than Jordan. As Jordan is going back down the court to play defense, someone from the crowd (might've been the Jazz's owner or their coach) yells out "Hey, Jordan! Why don't you pick on someone your own size?!"
The very next time down the floor Jordan gets the ball and dunks on the Jazz's 7 or nearly 7-foot-tall center. Jordan looks over to person who yelled at him and asked, "Was he big enough?" No response from the guy.
Amazing fact, I remember it, too.
That must have been 6'9'' Antoine Carr. Also Scottie Pippen climbed over him dunking one time.

@@ZoldZsolt Huh? I thought it was a bit earlier than that, but it being Ostertag would make sense that I would remember that story. Ostertag was a Kansas Jayhawk from when Roy Williams was their head coach and I'm Jayhawk fan, so maybe I heard that story or read that story in an interview Greg did.
I think Jordan played all 82 games 9 times in 13 seasons.
he played less than 80 (during a full season) only twice....1993 because he had played 100 games in 1992 AND the olympics so really between 1991-92 and 1992-93 he played 220 games and missed like 5 total (playing 80 and then 78 games in the regular season those 2 years).
The other year he was 38 years old and had played all but two games to that point when he got a serious injury missed about 15 games and the wizards fell apart and out of the playoff race by the time he returned for the final 5 games. he then played all 82 the next year as a 40 year old.
he said it was an obligation to play because someone paid good money to see him play in person for the first time every game of the regular season and if he didn't, he'd disappoint them....now most athletes don't have that attitude and it's a shame.
Michael was just perfection personified. Only Kobe came close to him in intensity, skill, and dedication to the game. RIP Kobe!

He played in 6 NBA Finals, his team won all 6 finals, none of series made it to game 7 and Jordan was the MVP of the finals all 6 times.

Your comment about putting a big guy on him was one idea, but he was up against Bird, Ewing, Mutombo, Shaq, and he dunked on them all. He had a recorded 48" vertical, some suspect 49" was more likely, but that wasn't measured. He's the undeniable G.O.A.T.. I highly suggest his Predator video. All defense.
Big guys were too slow footed and couldn't stay in front of him. The smaller guys did a better job of staying in front of him, but then he would just shoot over them.

And the "SICK Game," was unreal. No one else that sick would have played. But it was in 1997 Game 5 of the play off against the Jazz, MJ had the flu. But still he played the full game and scored 38 points, Scottie had to practically carried him off the court.
He played that game with a 103 temperature and literally was getting IV fluids at halftime and in between the quarters of the game. We all have seen LeBron get carried off the court for a cramp. This guy needed to get IV's during the freaking game and refused to let his team down to lose. Tells a huge story as to how much he was there for his team. He never demanded someone get traded away from the team never demanded the coach get fired never demanded certain players get signed. The only player that he ever was asked about if he could play with was Rodman and that was due to the teams history when Rodman was a Piston.

When Jordan retired the first time the Bulls retired his number 23 jersey. So, when he came back to the Bulls, he initially wasn't allowed to wear number 23. He wore number 45 because that was his brother's number in high school. Michael had said that one time his brother was a much better basketball player than him.
He was actually fined by the NBA $25,000 when he changed his number back to 23 in the second game of a playoff series against the Magic and the Bulls had failed to tell the league he was going to change jersey numbers.
MJ played the ENTIRE game every game. he was a killer. Thats why they ALL are compered to MJ.
And yet too many clowns think floppy is close. Jordan is heads and shoulders above any other player.
MJ is a unicorn in Sports history and the thing that sets him apart, in any era, is his mindset and will.
Both of them were second to none. Combined with, almost, super human athletic abilities and the rest is history.

I'm old enough and blessed enough to have witnessed most of mikes career and let me tell you what set him apart other then his mindset and competitiveness was how fundamentally sound he was! I saw him play a lot in that era. Now, looking back over it, I don't know if GREAT truly describes his ability. You mentioned he had no weaknesses, well, that wasn't an accident anything he felt he didn't do well or they said he couldn't do, he worked harder at it. he wasn't a 3-point shooter of that era. He could shoot the 3, and would if it presented itself or was needed. That era was more of a 3-point specialist era. Everybody on the team didn't just come down launching 3's. Isaiah Thomas now tells the story different and said that Jordan went and cried to the league about how Detroit would foul. The truth is, MJ got in the gym and got stronger. If you go back and watch, when they started beating Detroit, they were still fouling him hard, his body was just stronger and able to absorb the punishment. All teams had defensive specialist. Jordan was the first player where teams went out strictly to find their "Jordan" stopper..lol...and named him that. He had no weaknesses, and his game kept evolving. When he started to perfect that post-turn-around shot/footwork...and some of the best defenders in the league said it was over. yes, his career was longer than just the 6 championships, but even then, he was still the best player in the game. To 3-peat, retire, comeback, and 3-peat again....I just don't think anything else can be said or should be said after that.
Where Lebron James bulls his way past the defender and no offensive foul is called, Michael Jordan floats in mid-air around people. He was truly the Greatest Player of All Time. Where Lebron James always surrounded himself with at least three other superstars, Michael Jordan’s teammates were great role players. The only other superstar on his Bulls teams was Scotty Pippen, and they won 6 championships.
Calling Pippen a superstar is not only unsubstantiated but also asinine. Where are his credentials? MJ is the blame for deluding the public and Pippen about his "greatness."

I was in college and early 20’s during their run. So lucky to be in Chicago during his prime. A true God amongst mortals, and athletes like this come along but once in a lifetime. At one point it became such a sure thing in Chicago that they were going to win more titles, it wasn’t a question of if they were going to win, it was a question of where were you going to be when they did win. He was also the first Megastar, with Nike, Gatorade songs, and movie deals, he transcended the sport and became a cultural icon. The GOAT, greatest of all time, for all time!

From 1990 through 1998, the Bulls never lost 3 games in a row.
Never played a finals game 7, and only 3 total game 7's in playoff ball, going 2-1 in those games.
This level of domination has not been seen in any team sport. Even the Patriots, as dominant as they were never did this.

Eventually, once modern players realize they have no chance to be immortalized in the record books forever, they will begin to pursue their maximum potential.
MJ’s ability to palm the ball the way he did is one of the most amazing part of his skill set to me.
The dunks, blocks, and passes are fun to watch, but the way he would make the other players look like he was playing against kids with his fake-outs is just impressive.
Wanted to add that you should check out his years at the Washington Wizards. He still put up some insane stats. You won’t be disappointed.

He won 10 scoring titles, 9 first team all-defense and 6 finals MVP in 11 complete seasons with the Bulls and he led them to an incredible 623 games without losing 3 games in a row, and they won 25 out of 26 playoff series during that time. Nobody dominated the game like he did. Just listen to the announcers on some of these clips, there was no debate that he was the greatest ever at that time and people knew it before he even won his second ring, the rest was icing on the cake.

Jordan was a killer before he first retired. When he came back, he was a stone cold assassin. Speaking more toward his attitude and energy than any stats.
I love watching these reaction videos from people that didn't watch his greatness when it was live. As a person that grew up on Jordan, these videos don't even do it justice just how impactful and great he is/was.
What new fans don't understand is it was every...single...game. I had WGN in Chicago and got to see every game. Not a game went by when you didn't say "He's not human.".
Couldn't agree more. MJ was so intense from the 1st second to the last second of the game, and that every game and at playoffs, he would "simply" step it up. Scottie Pippen was considered the 2nd best in that era, and rightfully so. He was really great, but MJ was simply on a different level than any other great. I think that's Pippen biggest frustration. In that era, it was much more physical, and you were allowed to defend. Nowadays, it's totally different. If a player sneezes, he gets a fault. I prefer the Jordan era and you?

"If this guy can shoot, there's no stopping him." Yeah, Jordan could shoot. Excellent shooter. Really nothing he wasn't elite at. Each skillset he possessed was at a Hall of Fame level. Then there was his competitiveness which was unmatched. I'm not sure if his equal has or does exist. It was his real super power. Putting all of that athleticism, instinct, and physical gifts with the mind of a super competitor was a recipe for creating the GOAT.

- on many occasions, if he had extra motivation (in any case, he was always motivated), he managed to score consecutive points. seeming to be able to score at will. He managed this even at 38 years old, scoring 22+ points in the first quarter.

Jordan could hit 3's all day long but he even said himself he would have been less effective just going for 3's all the time. People don't realize he was great at assisting, rebounding, defending. everything.
I was born in 85 the same year he began playing, so I missed MJ's first 4 seasons, but from 90'-98 I was fortunate enough to watch 100s of bulls games and it was unbelievable, the things that man did night in and night out on both ends of the court, and the chemistry he and Pippen had while on the court was off the charts, I will always love the game of basketball, but it was just different back then, truly a magical time to have been a fan. Hell even old man Jordan on the Wizards with a torn meniscus was fun to watch, not as exciting being he was on one leg, occasionally he'd still drop 40 or 50 points as a beat up old guy, the guy truly loved to play.

8:48 Of all the incredible things done by MJ in this video, that play there astonishes me the most. Because it's not as if MJ comes running in on every free throw. Yet before the ball even hits the rim, Jordan somehow knew that the ball would not only not make it, but bounce off the rim in a way for him to get it and slam it in. I don't know if MJ is psychic or he was just that good that he could see the balls trajectory and knew how it would go off the rim. Or even crazier would be that it was planned and the guy at the free throw, purposely missed and was able to aim the ball so well he knew it would bounce off the rim in just the right way. Pick a scenario, it doesn't matter because they all reach the same conclusion. Incredible.
In 1984 a bunch of NBA players were scheduled to be the warm up games for the college players that made up the USA team in the Olympics that year. Prior to the Olympics, the team played eight games against NBA All-Star teams including Larry Bird, Magic Johnson, Kevin McHale, Robert Parish, Isiah Thomas and Mark Aguirre and won all eight. Jordan led this team in scoring also. So the NBA players knew what was coming into the league.
