    Great project & binding tutorial! I always have a problem when machine sewing the entire binding on. I prefer the look of hand binding the back for its precision, but it takes so much time to hand bind & that’s not always practical. So I keep trying to do both sides w/the sewing machine. This tutorial was so explicit & helpful. Thank you Jennifer!

    Jen...I love watching your videos. You are so calm, and think to mention simple things that beginners (like me!) are SO grateful for. I'm trying to figure out why the layers in my strips don't all end up two inches, sigh. I am using a 1/4 inch foot with a guard and then pressing each seam out. Sometimes the middle of the strip is fine but the ends get out of whack. Beginners!! :-)

    • @ShabbyFabrics
      @ShabbyFabrics  Před 3 lety

      Sewing long strips can be difficult! Just make sure your 1/4" seam allowance is right on. If you're using precut strips, you don't have to worry about whether it was your cutting or not. Are you finding your seams are too large or are they too small? - Morgan

    You know I'm a fan of this channel. Another great video. One sugestion - I looked at a blog and video from Nancy Sews and she recommends for safety, when you have a template and not a ruler she draws the lines from the template and uses a straight ruler to cut out the project following her lines, just because templates slip and move easily. Other sewers who use templates also suggest this. Thanks again for explaining all this in such great detail. You have helped improve my sewing a great deal. Your precision techniques are so helpful.

      @@ShabbyFabrics I’m done. This was definitely one of the more challenging projects from June tailor. The back puckered because I sewed the edges first. I took them apart and redid the whole thing. I think I made it a little too short but it looks good. I posted the pics on Instagram.

    Great video Jen. I have that foot you were talking about for the Bernina. It's a 10D. That's for a 9 mm. I'm not sure what it is for 5mm. A lady told me about it at a quilt class. I love to stitch in the ditch and have also discovered the serpentine stitch like Gail Straka was talking about.

    Wonderful project and great instructions. I love that you leave all your tips and tricks in the video so we can learn from it. If it was up to me you could be even more detailed. I would love to sew but don't have anyone to teach me, so I have to learn from videos like yours. You are doing a wonderful job. There is just one thing I want to mention (and you probably already know that), if you are using the 97 D presserfoot on your bernina (at least that's what it looks like) then you have markings on your foot showing you were the 1/4 inch allowens is, meaning you don't need to mark on your fabric where to pivot. But like I said you probably already knew that. Again, love your videos and everything you do.

    • @1Heimat

    Stitch in the Ditch is not exclusive to quilters, garment sewers also stitch in the ditch. Glue basting would work well for that center circle, glue the double fold bias with a drop of glue on one side, iron, glue, then repeat with the other side, so that it is attached when you are ready to sew.

    Great demo! I would love to know which red solid was used for the bias binding since it matches the red in the prints well. I made a really good move when Swell first came out and purchased a half yard bundle of the line so it would last me for several projects, so I'm thinking this tree skirt could be one of them (and the placements, love them too)!

      I'm very disappointed that this is called "June Tailors tree skirt" when I had created the original pattern a year before June pretended the design was hers. I made one for each of my daughters as Christmas gifts the year before June claimed it as her without permission. When I posted photos of the tree skirts to online Facebook quilting groups, June was one of the people who asked me how I made it. I had no idea she would steal the design and claim it as her own. Needless to say I don't post original ideas for people to steal anymore.

    I love this tree skirt.. I’m attempting to make it. I’m new at sewing. I cut my own 2.5in strips. I’ve made 4 sets of 9, with 1/4in seam. My problem is the seams aren’t lining up with the template. What should I do? I haven’t cut any of the triangles out because the seams aren’t lining up. Should I take them apart and do them again? I didn’t iron the pieces I pressed them with steam. Also a few seams do line up but not all of them. even in the video you suggest to pull the fabric and adjust them to the seams but it’s way off. @shabbyfabrics

    • @ShabbyFabrics
      @ShabbyFabrics  Před 2 lety +1

      We're glad you enjoy this fun project! Definitely re-measure and re-sew your seams if they're not lining up with the template. Here's why- the spaces on the template are each two inches wide, so if you're sewing a 2.5" piece of fabric, with a .25" seam allowance, that would allow for the 2" of template space. Prior to creating, we starch (we use a spray like "Magic Sizing") and steam our cotton fabrics. You can do this, then re-measure and see if you need to trim any excess. Hope this helps! -Michelle

      We do not use pre-made bias tape. We create binding by cutting fabric on the bias. As a rule, we cut our binding fabric to 2 1/2" strips, then join those into one long strip. We press it in half, wrong sides, together, then sew it to the front of the project, then fold it around and hand-sew it to the back. Finished, it has the appearance of being about 1/4" - 5/8" (depending on the thickness of the batting used). - Yajaira

    Just finishing up this quilted tree skirt. I am an experienced sewist but a new quilter. I purchased quality quilting fabric from a quilt shop. I decided NOT to prewash my fabric based on research on quilting blogs and websites. I meticulously cut the strips, matching selvage edges and eliminating puckers, and used a 1/4" presser foot specifically for sewing the strips. I used the "ruler-over-template" method initially but kept cutting the template, and then started tracing the template with my Frixon pen, cutting with the ruler only. When tracing the template, not a single one had more than one or 2 seams line up with the horizontal lines on the template. After sewing the first several wedges onto the batting, I was able to make the correction an get every seam to line up. Unfortunately, the Wedges began slowly creeping down the template and I was an inch short on the top after the fourth wedge. I finally gave up trying to match the seams and kept the wedges matched to the batting. It will be a beautiful gift, but not up to quilting standards for even this newbie quilter. Not sure where I made my mistake(s). My only thought is the fabrics were off-grain to start with? Any advice for my next try?

      Great question! Here's the thing with the tree skirt. Its a very tricky project because the pattern is printed on batting which is a flexible, distortable product. Every time you tug, press and sew, the batting with shift slightly. You can't exactly get around that - you just have to be the boss of your fabric!
