Years ago I purchased the Lil Sprout self binding receiving blanket from Shabby. It sat in its packaging until just recently I pulled it out to make the blanket. What was I waiting for it was so much fun, easy and adorable. I gifted it to a newborn who’s parents requested I make something for their new arrival. I will be making these lovely placements too. Thank you. All of your tutorials and the newest At Home tutorials are great.
We're glad to hear that you enjoy these self-binding projects. They're definitely easy to create and gift. Thank you for sharing your sweet gifting story with us! 💖 -Michelle
This is brilliant! I can see that it would be easy to adjust the measurements to make a table runner too. For another variation, you could piece the centre section.
I have used your grocery bag technique to make many Christmas gifts. I just started some for Christmas 2022.
Your 'magic' pillowcases are another favourite. Thank you so much!
That's absolutely correct. It is so easy to scale this project into other sizes. Thanks for watching! -Bethany
What a magical pattern!! Such an easy pattern with a lovely, elevated look! Thank you! 💛🌻💛
We're happy you like it! Thank you for your comment. -Michelle
I love watching you and listening to your gentle voice. During this pandemic I have made at least 200 of those self binding receiving blankets for donation. I was a flannel hoarder. I can’t wait to use this method for placemats. Thanks so much for this tutorial.
Thank you for your kind words. We're glad that these types of projects inspire you. Thanks for watching!! 💖 -Michelle
I just love the simplicity of your tutorials and the detail of explaining each step. It's an inspiration for us all to make these thank you again so so much

Thank you Jen for such a clear tutorial - even for showing your “mistake”. We all do these things, but you showed us how to just carry on and sort it out. Thank you.
Thank you for your kind comment, Jen! We are glad you enjoy this fun placemat project. -Michelle
Thanks for this video. I have been wondering for quite a while if the same self-binding principle would work! Love it!
We're happy this project inspires you. Thank you for watching! 💖 -Michelle
Thank you so much! I had to watch several times to see how those corners were sewn. I made my border 1” so it ended up looking like a binding. Perfect! Just what I wanted. Thank you! Made one for my nightstand.
Woohoo! We're so glad you enjoyed this fun project! Thanks so much for watching. -Michelle
These instructions are concise but complete, so clear visually and verbally. Gave me the confidence to try a table runner, and it worked out really well. Thank you!
That is awesome that you made a table runner out of this pattern! Thank you for your comment! - Abby
I do like to make placemats for each month/season and have most months already done. But I love this simple technique for the binding! Wish I had seen this much earlier. But from this point on, I will be using this fantastic idea! 😊Thanks for sharing it! ❤
We are very happy that you found us and excited for you to get into this project! Thank you for your support and comment! 😊❤️ - Abby
Thank you for the tutorial, very informative, loaded with tips.
I made these, with your help, turned out beautiful.
I love your attention to detail in every video I've watched.
Thank you again!
Hi kathrynann1949 - You won't be suing your applique to the mat/sheet you are using for placement. If you're using the Silicone Appli-Fuse mat, the sticky on the back of the applique shapes doesn't tend to stick to the mat. Hope this makes sense! -Michelle
I have a bunch of Christmas fabric to placemat and napkin sets with for a craft show. I love this idea since they do not require batting plus I already make the napkins with mitered corners. Might use a decorative stitch in a contrasting color for sewing around the placemat for closing. Thank you for another new idea.
We're happy you enjoy this delightful project!! Thanks sew much for watching!! 💖 -Michelle
Wow, so quick! I will definitely sew these along with the cathedral placemats what a wonderful gift to give!
These make great gifts for the holidays! Happy that you love these and thanks for your comment! - Abby

We're happy you enjoyed it. Thanks so much for your comment! 💖 -Michelle
Magic!!!!!
I didn’t use this for making a placemat.
I needed some way to bind (and line) something quite thick and easily frayed.
This worked a treat!!!!!
10/10 for video tutorial
❤️
We are so glad we could inspire you! -Kristen
Gosh, these are just beautiful. I just bought a kit from your site! I’m so glad they are still in stock. I’ll be ready for next Christmas 😇
We're so happy this project inspires you! Thank you very much for watching. -Michelle
I think I would put some of the warm fleece (padding) inside to protect table from hot plates and just stitch it down in the final closing of the seam. So pretty! I know my gifts this year!
Great suggestion! Thank you for watching!! 💖 -Michelle
Stunning...that poinsettia fabric is to die for. I'm using up a small hoard of fabrics from over the decades, and thought of making them into table place mats/runners - thus landing on your great video. Boy did I over think that project...first try: interfacing + sheet of poly fill + quilting...ugh. Then this video...simplified and certainly easy. I bought a bolt of Pellon 808 Craft Fuse (it's single-fusible stabilizer) so I'll add that to add body (and to use it up!). I love how your pattern skips the step of edge binding by using the back fabric as the binding. Genius! :) Keep up the good ideas!!
Thank you so much for your lovely comment! We're so glad this fun project has inspired you :) -Michelle
I watched this video everything I make self binding placemats. I am making popsicle placemats for my kids for Christmas gifts. I try to make placemats ora runner for every season. This year these will be fun for summer. Thanks for sharing your wonderful tutorials.

Happy that you enjoyed this tutorial! It is such a great project! Thanks for your comment! - Abby
I love this pattern. Thank you! I added a pretty stiff fusible interfacing to the top before sewing. It keeps the placemat a bit more stable.
How fun!! We're glad you like it!! ❤️ -Michelle
Jen, those place mats are just stunning.
We're happy you enjoy this great project. Thanks for watching! -Michelle

Hi Jen, those placemats are so beautiful, I love the fabrics. 😍
We're glad you like this fun design. Thanks for watching! 💖 -Michelle
Great way to finish off placemats! Thank you for this tutorial.
We're so happy it inspired you. Thanks for watching! 💖 -Michelle
Thanks, this is beautiful. One thing I do to help myself - on the opening for turning, while still right sides together, I use my hera marker to crease a fold line, just lining up my ruler on the seam and then creasing the gap with the creasing tool. Helps me because I'm so sloppy at closing those openings. I don't know why I can't be as neat as you. I hope you get to enjoy friends and family this year. I've missed those gatherings, too. Thank you for the tutorial.
Great suggestion! Thank you for watching!! 💖 -Michelle
Going to try this on my new set. Thanks😊
Thanks for the way you explained the steps for the corners. I’ve made dozens of the self-binding baby blankets. Every so often I start a new batch and stitch the wrong way on the corner. When you do that, btw, you get a box instead of a flat piece! 😀
We're happy you enjoy this tutorial. Thanks sew much for watching!! 💖-Michelle
Thanks for the warning!
That poinsettia fabric is beautiful!
We're happy you enjoy it, Peeshy! Thanks so much for watching! 💖 -Michelle
Thank you for the great tutorial. It works out quite nice. I like it. I made the first one and turned it before I snipped the corners, just to check my miters. It felt quite flimsy. So I added a layer of fusible fleece (pellon 987F) 17" x 11 3/4" centered on the wrong side of the back piece before I sewed the project together. Then proceed as in the tutorial. This made a much more substantial feeling placement.
We're so glad this project has inspired you! Thanks so much for watching. -Michelle

We're happy you enjoy them! Thanks so much for commenting! -Michelle
I have made this type of baby blanket -no batting needed; however, I definitely want batting in my placemats. I made the turning opening a little larger; measured the placemat; cut batting about 1/4” smaller in length and width; stuffed into finished fabric mat; wiggled, arranged and smoothed batting into fabric; pinned carefully into place; stitched opening closed; and then did some simple quilting to hold all layers together. I found it very helpful to build a test placemat with some less than precious fabric. Turned out great! Once I made a couple, they went together quickly. Thanks for the great idea of using the baby blanket method for quick placemats!
Glad that you enjoyed this project and happy that we gave you this idea! We appreciate your support and thank you for your comment! - Abby
Thank you, so much, for sharing this video! Your instructions are so easy to follow. I made ten placemats for my Thanksgiving dinner table this year, and had enough material left over that I made drink coasters to match!
That’s wonderful to hear! We’re so glad you enjoyed this project. -Michelle
Love this. I needed a way to enlarge my placemats as didn't have enough width for height and this technique will make that possible. Thank you!

Happy that you enjoyed this tutorial and that it has helped you! You are welcome for the free download! We appreciate your support and comment! - Abby
Very pretty & looks rather easy too. I like the idea of making some as a gift for both daughters, a housewarming gift, or as a gift to my own table. My personal table is oblong in shape, & I’m thinking of making a single one, longer in length tho, to place in the center, as a centerpiece, then placing a small candle (or another object) that compliments the theme of the centerpiece placemat. My kitchen has a “John Deere” theme, therefore I would use something that would compliment that. I have several ideas now to make to maybe show different season themes. Such as Halloween, an upcoming birthday, Resurrection, a Patriotic theme, or even a baby shower…just endless possibilities. Thank you for this video. God Bless 🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸
What a wonderful idea! We're happy this project has inspired you!! 💖 -Michelle
