Self Binding Placemat - SUPER SIMPLE!!

  • One day project! Make placemats in this simple way, adjustable to any size!
    Fabric requirements:
    0.35 m (0.5 yd) main/front fabric
    0.45 m (0.5 yd) backing/binding fabric
    0.35 m (0.5 yd) fusible fleece or batting (we use Pellon Fusible Fleece)
    Tools I used: (sold at Cindy Bee's Quilt Shoppe)
    505 temporary glue spray
    Creative Grids 6-1/2" x 12-1/2" ruler
    OR: Wing Clipper by Studio 180 ruler
    Omni-Grid 18" x 24" cutting mat
    Olfa Ergonomic 45mm rotary cutter
    Clover Glass-head pins

    I'm a beginner at sewing, and looked at several videos, even did a couple of tests of other methods before I came to yours, and found your instructions to be so clear and easy to follow. The results for me came out much nicer than other attempts. It actually looks like I know what I'm doing. ☺Thank you so much for sharing this excellent tutorial.

      I agree and had similar experience. Somehow I managed to mess up some of the other, supposedly fool proof self-binding techniques. This one is clear and easy.

      😅 7:29 your i structions are very ygood but whyndidnt you notice the pattern was off i found that really irritating, I'm surprised you you didnt notice. 7:38

If one is going to make critical comments on someone else's 'mistakes' one should probably pay a little more attention to what they're doing themselves. Your whole comment is just a mess.

    Fusabile batting will wad up and re glue itself in a mess in the dryer. We always use the plain fleece interfacing and throw a couple of rows of stitching across it.

    Your instructions are perfectly explained and easy to follow. You're a great teacher. It really helps to talk all the small steps through so we can understand what you know by heart.     I picked up quilting to keep sane while Covid. Never in my life I had quillted and I have amazed myself. This is the most awesome and easiest video for mitered corners I have seen in two years. I also learn another way to use my CG 6 inch ruler I had no idea about. I used this technique on a table top for Valentines. The best mitered corners I have done yet. Thank you Cindy for this video.     This. is. AMAZING!!!! I have a machine embroidery/sewing machine placemat design that uses self binding. The instructions were perfect until they got to the binding part, then it was completely not understandable. I found this video and practiced on scrap fabric and it works perfectly! Thanks SO much.

    I make placemats all the time but your video provided an awesome, yet simple way to do the corners (which are always a challenge!!!). With your instruction, I believe my binding on not only placemats but also table runners where I use self-binding will be so much more attractive & provide a beautifully finished look.     I also have a Pfaff. Love this machine. I bought a 1471 in 1995. I made all my toddlers clothes then. Now I have a creative icon, and now I make my children and grandchildren quilts. Love the Pfaff product. Best sewing machine ever made.. Love your placemats. I will have to make these next. Thanks for sharing your video with all of us. Great video ❤️

    Thank you. "SUPER SIMPLE!!" turns out to be accurate. Binding is the only step I struggle with (and consequently the only step of quilting I dislike), but your technique is clear and easy and will let be avoid the traditional binding. Thanks again.

    New at quilting! Saw the words "Self Binding." I have been working with flannel and was having so much trouble with the corners of the binding, even when I bound with the backing. This method works wonderfully. I can't thank you enough.

    Beverly Lewis. love the video I actually made one place mat, the only trouble I had was cutting the corners and sewing the two pieces to form the mitered point,I could not see how you were doing that, but I figured it out after a few tries, thank very much foe a terrific and easy patter and video.

    Fantastic way to miter corners! I've always used backing fabric to bind mug rugs but the miters often didn't come out quite right and the folds could be quite bulky. This method is infinitely superior . Thanks so much! 👏

    13X17, great size. You can get 6 front pieces from one yard, or 4 backing/edge pieces! Love that ruler!

    Nice video for this self binding method. Placemats are a good way to practice using all those quilting and decorative stitches. I also use this on tablerunners with 90 degree corners.

      If you would like a matching table runner, cut the main fabric the size you would like, cut the backing 2” wider on all sides, ie. if the runner is 18” x 30” cut backing 22” x 34” and sew the same as the placemats
