    In 2019 China’s People’s Liberation Army introduced their brand new primary rifle the QBZ-191. The reason they switched away from the Type-95 takes us through Xi Jinping's larger goal of modernization and completely overhauling their entire infantry philosophy.
    For instance The QBZ-191 appeared just 4 months before China announced they would also start manufacturing 1.4 million body armor plates. That probably doesn’t sound like a big deal until you realize in the past PLA soldiers were never issued ballistic plates. Xi Jinping's sword just got a little sharper and his shield a little thicker.
    Written & Edited by: Chris Cappy
    The lightweight 6.6 lb qbz-191 fires a new version of their 5 8 by 42 mm intermediate cartridge at a rate of fire of 750 rounds per minute using a more reliable gas operated short stroke piston. Don’t get too distracted by the beautiful hardware that isn’t the real revolution here, we’ll see this is really all about the 4 new high tech attachments and changes to their fighting doctrine. But are the internet rumors that the QBZ-191 has poor performance actually true and Will Xi Jinping's overhaul of the average Chinese infantryman work? Fire a surplus round at the like and subscribe button and lets get started.

      If not a joke, and I don't think it was, maybe he was confusing the application of % reductions and % increases? A 60% reduction means something is less than half the original (lets say you start with 100 it takes you to 40) but a 60% increase is only a 6 x 10th increase (100 to 160). This asymmetric way % changes affect a number is a bit confusing. Both are the same absolute changes (60) but one halves while the other doesn't double. You would need a 100% or more increase to get a doubling. For instance to go from 40 to 100 (to reverse the 60% decrease) would be a 150% increase, which would also take you from 100 to 250.

      Expensive systems like aircrafts and ships are already controlled by extremely expensive personell, and the level of technology can determine if they will be war winners (like the US air force) or almost totally useless (like the Russian air force).
      But what truly makes infantry "good" is much harder to improve through money. Motivation, military culture, cooperation, individual skill... Equipment can improve infantry as well (including improve their morale), but it's much lower on the list.

    • @bigmekboy175
      @bigmekboy175 Před rokem +283

      The US did the same thing for a long time. I was infantry starting back in 1999 and we were still using iron sights, flak vests, our SAWs were the ones with faulty rails making them as reliable as a distracted cat, and our primary antitank system was the AT-4 with some dragons from the 70's. Just before going to Iraq we finally got Javelins which proved VERY useful and we did have plenty of radios and NVG's thankfully.
      When T&P said that China had two radios per a company my inner grunt screamed in horror. The lack of NVG's are bad but at least you can fight most of the time, the lack of radios affects you all the time and it is far worse than not being able to see as far.

    • @jeffk464
      @jeffk464 Před rokem +58

      Because it doesn't matter that much, a grunt after all is a grunt. You need better intelligence and high tech weapon systems. The US is used to fighting guerrilla warfare where if you play the guerrilla's game, which we always do, it doesn't matter what technological advantage you have.

      @LSgaming201 Před rokem +118

      China is in the same strategic situation as the US. Any theoretical war they could get involved in would be 80% a Navy and Air Force war. Elite well equipped infantry aren't going to change that. Militaries need infantry but the degree to which infantry matter will vary quite a bit between nations.

    • @bigmekboy175
      @bigmekboy175 Před rokem +94

      @jeffk464 a grunt without the ability to see, shoot, or communicate is useless. At night if I have good NVG's and my opposition doesn't I will slaughter their forces. If you don't understand why try playing paintball with a blindfold.
      The lack of radios means that either the entire force needs to move in one massive lump or no one will know what is going on. Infantry needs to maneuver in small groups that can immediately adjust to new situations to be effective.
      As for the rifle, in CQB there's really not much difference but the introduction of the ACOG to Afghanistan proved to be a huge force multiplier. We got so many head shots at longer ranges that our forces were initially accused of executing the Taliban grunts. The rifle and the round doesn't really matter that much, it's the accessories that matter.

      You can get keyholing when the weight of the bullet is too heavy for the amount of spin the rifling can induce over the barrel length. It is over come by reducing the bullet weight, having a longer barrel, or having a higher twist rate on the barrel. A barrel that's had a lot of wear or perhaps has the groves filled with gunk (needs cleaning) might also have issues with inducing enough spin.

      It has been an issue in communist societies dating back to the establishment of the soviet army. The reason they ended up with political commissars was to solve a dispute between those who wanted to use ex-Russian imperial army officers to get the new force up and running quickly, and those who wanted to start from scratch with a more marxist structure. The compromise was to place commissars in the units to keep an eye on the officers and men, to make sure that they weren't doing or saying anything too counter-revolutionary.

      Mao, upon seeing sparrows eating grain, ordered 1 billion Chinese to kill every bird they encountered to prevent food shortages from birds eating all their grain. They did just that. Then the insect population exploded because no birds were eating them, the bugs ate all their crops, and the Chinese starved so hard that tens of millions of them died.
      Mao, upon deciding China needed to prove it was relevant to the world by exporting steel, ordered 1 billion Chinese to drop what they were doing and produce steel. So they melted down every piece of metal they could get their hands on, pots, pans, farming tools, etc. and melted them down. They chopped down entire forests to fuel the furnaces, and some of the more zealous Chinese tore apart their own houses to provide more fuel for the furnaces. In the end, they produced massive quantities of worthless pig iron, and now they had nothing to cook in, no tools to work with, and other issues.
      Basically, just about every brilliant idea Mao came up with was devastatingly stupid. And that doesn't get into rumors about his lavish lifestyle while tens of millions of Chinese starved to death, or having entire troupes of underage girls perform Chinese opera and ballet for him in the nude.

I'd further add that multiple gas regulators is quite a terrible idea unless you plan to put silencers on the rifle in which case you'd only need 2. I don't see the keyhole to be a problem, they probably used rubber/simunition ammo instead of regular ammo in a shoot house to avoid ricochets. Rubber or more likely simunition rounds probably don't grab onto the grove of the rifling as well causing it to keyhole. On the bright side of the new rifle is that china will offload their old SKS/AK rifles to other countries, in which case there will be a surplus of new rifles in the US markets.

    2. The biggest improvement in replacing old rifles with new rifles is the abandonment of bullpup rifles and replaceable parts, making them more versatile and precise.
    3. In the past, the PLA did not have a military rank system, but the soldier committee could directly participate in the discussion of tactical plans and military democracy. I do not think the abolition of the military rank system was a failure, nor was it a failure in Vietnam. Some units in Vietnam performed poorly precisely because they did not adhere to military democracy.
    4. "Southern Weekend" can be seen as the CIA's agent in China. It is a right-wing newspaper, and every editor and reporter is an American spy.

    As former infantryman myself, I'd rifle looks pretty good. At least workable. It seems handy to shoulder, accurate enough to work. The magazine release would be weird for me, but I've never been a big AK fan. But for some training on it, it would probably work, and only be slightly slower than the push button things like the M4 use. All that being said, the PRC is figuring things out. A country making big warships to show the flag isn't necessarily a dangerous omen, however, when a nation suddenly dumps money into infantry, it means something else entirely. the PRC / PLA has been expanding their marines, changing their order of battle, etc. Here's what I would look for. I'd look for paint maker on the rifles, because when they figure that one out it means something. Just dumping new rifles into a unit is cool, whatever, but when each rifle is "Owned" by a specific soldier, that's when you can see how serious they are. Anyway, rifle looks cool, I'd love to shoot one.

    The one issue that you would have to worry about for mass producing this new rifle is loose tolerances which can lead to a lot of heartache for regular grunts when they get the bad draw when handed their issued rifle. The keyholing could just be a production issue of early variants that could be fixed but China is a different beast and comparing western approaches to problem solving to China is like getting a fish to climb a tree. We have already witnessed a similar issue with Russia, with the west quietly being nervous and falling for the propaganda, expecting Russian soldiers equipped with decked out AK-12's while covering a T-14 Armata.
    The real problem with cutting through the grease of propaganda when it comes to small arms is that the proof is in the pudding when only you can actually view a complete strip down of the rifle and get into the guts of the weapon so it is very hard to confirm or deny if the weapon lives up to expectations. Norinco has improved over the last twenty years but that reputation boost is reliant on the consumer market, not really the military market since China has not been in any proper wars to field test Norinco's goodies. It would be like taking the glowing review of a Canadian hunter with his Norinco rifle being applied to a peer-to-peer battle. Apples and oranges. Love the vids Cappy

      This is true, but you should remember that Russia and China are *very* different countries and cultures. As much as we rag on China for being cheap, the fact is that quality assurance is impossible to maintain when managing production on the scale China handles things. A majority of Chinese products are actually extremely reliable, but our brains only recognize and blame Chinese cheapness when we see something fail or a localized dip in quality. For example, there were several modern infrastructure projects recently that were almost all successful with no issue in China, however one key province's construction workers failed to apply mix correctly and thus we saw crumbling roads seemingly made out of 'chalk'.
      This is the same for almost everything. And a key reason why China makes such boisterous and high-tech designs stolen from reliable sources like the U.S. because even if 25% of your new stealth jets are poorly made, you still made enough so that the other 75% are going to be good. This is the opposite for what Russia has done and continues to do which is rely on pride and stubbornness in seemingly ever aspect of their society even down to production. When a Russian factory fails to meet quotas, instead of expanding the amount of factories or workers, Russian politicians and officers will simply say "Well then just make it work!" and as a result either the factory comes up with a cheap way to get the quota done (even if things come out crappy and rushed) or they just fail outright.
      To really get a sense of what I'm talking about here, look at the production of the MiG-9. It was literally designed to show power projection post WW2 and even though it was designed to barely be flyable or even fire its crappy engine-mounted guns (yep, right through the engine), factory workers were simply given quotas and had to practically make most of them out of wood. Similarly look up Russian fire-and-forget missiles, they still don't work and are sold everywhere because Ivan can't imagine a world where just motivation alone won't carry him to the finish line.

      I use 77s almost exclusively, but I don't quite understand why the Chinese use a steel core since they aren't effective against modern body armor, make the bullet longer and more difficult to stabilize which may be why there were keyhole targets and generally degrades accuracy since the penetrator adds complexity to the design.

      Zero precision shooters use steel core bullets and none of the new military rounds use them, so there's a snowflake's chance in hell that they overlooked the supposed BC benefit.
      The SS109 was designed to defeat soft body armor and that's pretty much it. There's no longer a purpose as anyone with armor is rocking plates.

      The M855 isn't designed to out do the 77 grain. It's designed to have a bit better BC then a M193 55 grain.
      The Chinese likely are mixing a number of different stats together making it seem like they've one super bullet, when instead they're quoting the best stats from each type.

    OK, the reason that PLA was not widely equipped with ballistic plates is that the ballistic plates and vests have an expiration date because of the kevlar and other ballistic materials. The plates and vests are only distributed to front-line soldiers who currently have military missions like border control, United Nations peacekeeping force, special ops, and armed police (different from SWAT and normal police). This is the most cost-effective way of utilizing the equipment.

    Since no country is likely to invade China in a ground war, China has no need to equip ALL of their soldiers well, nor to provide first rate training for ALL of their soldiers. They just need to properly equip and train enough of their soldiers for an expeditionary force. For example, their potential invasion of Taiwan might involve, at most, about 200,000 soldiers. Their adventures in African countries involve a few 10s of thousands of soldiers. Their PLAN soldiers (marines) serving on their island bases and on ships will probably have a higher priority in receiving the best equipment and training.

    I actually think the new rifle is a huge step back in the PLAs arsenal and actually a really shocking development. I never understood the Type 95 for such a long time until I started really looking into the structure and method of the PLAs doctrine on how to conduct war. Oddly enough its very similar, albiet different methods, to USMCs use of shock and awe. PLA ground forces relies heavily on infantry movement and overwhelming numbers - APCs and rapidly setting up FOBs. The entire point of the Type 95 was designed specifically fit their method of warfare. A rifle that was designed specifically to be cheap, good enough, and fit the criteria of compactness and ergonomics to allow each and every infantry unit to fit comfortably into APCs and immediately get to work constructing and fortifying positions and performing necessary tasks to establish supply lines and keep the spearhead moving. All of this while being kitted and armed at all times to allow for labor, defense, and reinforcing assault within literal moments of receiving intel. In the USMC every marine is a rifleman but in then in the PLA every soldier is an engineer, which is actually quite the threat. But this ...this doesnt fit in annnny of it. Im surpised they didnt stick with the mold and rehaul the Type 95 to be something like the Croatian VHS-2 with the parameters to fit their newly proposed advanced intel system. This screams high brass meddling to me and somewhere in the PLA or Norinco theres an engineer head in hand, chainsmoking cigarettes, while reading through reports and requests at this bullshit he tried to warn higher-ups about.

    My big question would be how do they train for marksmanship. It does not take too long to train a person to be accurate enough to turn enemy soldiers into casualties at 100-300 meters, about a 7 MOA shooter for 300 meters, iirc. But after 400-500 meters, reaching out and hitting targets requires more practice, more correcting for windage, ballistics, etc., and sometimes different techniques. Shooting for CQB also requires different techniques to do well. How do the Chinese train and how well?

    • @JohnSmith-fq3rg
      @JohnSmith-fq3rg Před 9 měsíci +3

      Based on those drills by the orange barriers, they are copying western cqb drills and have had a reasonable standing army of some kind for atleast 70 years, the question isn't of marksman training but basic squad level discipline and cohesion under combat conditions and long term logistics support, things they have historically suffered from.

    • @danmc7815
      @danmc7815 Před 9 měsíci

      Functioning as a unit, whether a squad, platoon, company, regiment or larger is a whole different question. That requires building loyalty and discipline at each level, that goes both up and down the chain of command. Logistics? Part of that equation, but logistics is a whole other science, nevermind equation. An army moves and fights on its stomach, but as I am sure most are aware not only does the equipment and supply need to get to where it needs to be on time, but the soldier in the field needs to have some belief that the army is trying to get him what he needs and wants, and is likely to get him at least enough for him to fight well. The soldier does not feel that loyalty, is he going to be willing to fight, or does he just feel like cannon fodder?
      But, the other thing you touch on in your response, thinking. Who is doing the thinking, and who is following that thinking? The ideas need to also move up and down the chain, the decisions need to be followed enough, but not always to the letter. How much? Depends. A good man leading a smaller unit should get the ability to use his own judgment more, but you need to build that into the organization and the people. Again, a whole other science that you touch upon.
      Your response opened not a can of worms, but cases worth of different kinds of worms.
