We all need to remember that this happened in the 90's. Things like this happening were practically unheard of. I'd hate to blame his mother but i strongly believe that parents play a strong part in their childrens mental health. You gotta make the effort to talk to your kids and show interest in their daily life. But i also agree, if only he got some therapy and had someone with the right training to trust. This whole situation was preventable.
His mother created his school image with the way she was clothing him, she was styling him to be an outcast. The mother aided to end the relationship with his first and only girlfriend.
Reality and truth are hard topics and his neglectful(possibly abusive as well)mom and lack of a dad is exactly what and whom is to blame

I’m glad someone on your podcast saying that this is a child at the end of the day. He was finding a place to fit in during his teenage life. He had no one to turn to, his mom was abusive, he’s brother and father. Then his father abandoning him is yet another blow to his child self, growing up feeling so unloved and not likes by anyone including your peers and not getting help is a recipe for disaster.
I don’t care what he’s going thru, animal cruelty is way too far. Not excusing him attacking people, but at least they are capable of defending themselves, and don’t always trust us
I respect the way all mile higher podcasts shift the focus from sensationaling the story to dissecting root causes and highlights the victims lives. This kid had issues before playing games. I played DnD, Pathfinder, and Star Wars for 15 years. No issues. There's SO much more here. And in most cases, too.

I have been waiting for someone to cover this case! Thank you for doing it. This still haunts a lot of this area of Mississippi. As a teacher myself now, I think of this often. It is heartbreaking how many in our profession have had the thought of dying for our students, although it could be our own student holding the gun. My thoughts go out to all the victims of tragedies like this. It is shocking how much this happens.
I lived in Littleton, Co when Columbine happened. I knew a parent that lost their child. My son was 4 at the time, I was never okay until he graduated highschool. Be safe…

Pearl High Class of 96. This happened in 97. God Bless the victims and families who endured this tragedy. He actually worked at Dominoes Pizza and delivered pizza to my home. When I answered the door for the delivery, he was like, “You go to my school…” I didn’t know him but I feel sad that he committed this horrible crime.
I know it feels hopeless but there have been a few cases lately where they have stopped a school shooting before a plan could take action. I saw two cases recently here in Florida. Police are taking it a lot more seriously, and kids are reporting things that they see and hear. It's not nearly enough but it's something.
That quote is so haunting. “If only he got therapy.” Cause if he did and don’t become friends with Grant, none of this would have happened. It’s truly tragic for everyone involved.
Thank you for keeping a light on these horrific school shootings. I lived in Littleton when Columbine happened, a good friend was a neighbor to one of the children that lost her life. I'm a single parent my son was only 4, at that time going to daycare. From that day until my son graduated highschool I was always in fear, every night I would pray to God to protect my son, to let him live through highschool. Parents need to do better. It's not fair that good parents suffer the loss of their children because of the children of bad parents.

It wasn’t the first school shooting. Alan Kearbey in Goddard, KS in 1985 killed his Principal and injured students and staff in a shooting rampage. I lived nearby at the time and was school aged.
There was Brenda Spencer in 1979 too. She killed the principal, custodian and injured eight children and an officer.
I lived in pearl when this happened ( live the next town over now) it was insane!
Man, that poor dog. Not to mention the other victims.

it really blows my mind and is scary the amount of school shootings we have in the U.S. compared to ANY other country. it’s not even close. how can we think we’re the best country when children have to go to school in fear of being shot
It's cuz we have the worst availability to proper mental health assistance, and we leave schools unprotected. We should protect schools like we protect politicians and there wouldn't be school shootings
A big part of that is probably legalisation of gun ownership in America, in the UK you need a licence and its usually farmers that obtain them to buy shotguns for hunting

There were so many signs, something should have been done. Everyone seemed to just overlook the obvious, not saying they knew he would shoot up the school but he was obviously disturbed. My kids were at the elementary school it was so scary.

Im from the UK and love Austin and Josh and the way they liase with each other. Both have their own perspective, both respect each other opinions and both are fair and open minded to every topic they discuss
I don't understand why this is a thing in America. In Australia we have never once had a school shooting. It's crazy to me that this is a regular thing in the states. When everyone has access to guns it's clearly creating carnage. Madness

You guys need to do the Freeman brothers case here in Pa. They were 16&17 in 1995 and killed their parents and lil brother. Back in court now trying to be released. No. They are where they belong. It’s a great case to look into.

Idk I mean I do have sympathy for his childhood because no one deserves that & it for sure contributed to who he became but we also have to remember loads of people go through childhoods just as bad if not worse & don’t end up this way. He still made that choice.

It never ceases to amaze me how quick everyone is to look at parents of shooters/killers, teachers and authority figures in these cases; when time and again, whether a mass shooter or serial killer, one common thread is almost always bullying by their childhood peers. Yet, i never see anyone highlighting this or the failures of the parent(s) that were raising bullies. Cult type situations and these RPGs gone wrong are almost always preying on people who are looking for acceptance they never felt they had anywhere else. With 'anywhere else' typically meaning home AND classmates at school.
You guys are very in depth with your stories, i enjoy this alot. You are right on par with mr ballen in my eyes. Keep up the great work!!
The way you portrait these cases in so much 1:16:25 detail is so chilling....very informative and most important keep alive about all these " forgotten" cases. I would love that the brenda paz case is worth looking into or talked about, because this tragedy has been one of the most disturbing cases I've ever come across😢

I do want to point out that while Anton Lavey did encourage Satanic rituals, he never, not once, encouraged violence towards innocent creatures, human or otherwise. That brand of Satanism cannot be connected, and is not connected, to any sort of tragedy such as this. The mother was not murdered @ 5 a.m. as part of a satanic ritual. That's not what Anton Lavey 's church was about, not even remotely.

Kirby Sommers has some interesting videos about the paralels of that movie & book & real events. The exterior shots of the apartment was the Dakotah building where John Lennon was gunned down not long after.
I live not too far from pearl and this case is still talked about even at my school. I am glad to finally find a resource to learn more info about this.

Columbine wasn't the first school shooting. It was Thurston high school. Kip Kinkel murdered both his parents, then went to school the next morning where he killed two people and wounded 25.

I think on " how is this happening" with teens just posting these violent things & nothing's said,is cause kids are often not taken seriously at all!When you think back on when you were a kid,you may remember how often adults snicker & laugh at things you said.This is likely how!To them, kids are just in play mode!

Interesting bit on RPG's and the players. It immediately made me think of Heath Ledger playing the role of Joker. It would make sense to me that if emotionally vulnerable people play a part that somehow enhances who they are in real life, the characters traits that were most desirable become part of the players personality in some way. Especially if immersed in the character over extensive amounts of time. Fascinating. Thanks for the brain food.
Immediately it makes me think of a abusive mother that formed her son’s image to become an outcast. Broken people can be manipulated to do the impossible.
This is in the county I live in and my cousin was assistant principal at the time. She retired at end of that school year. It was so shocking.

I love this! I feel like generally if people used this, the world would be so much better. Seems to me like the majority of people these days are very self-absorbed and only care about things that directly affect them. No one ever wants to be held accountable and it seems at times that no one is willing to be kind if it doesn't serve themselves in some way.

Is pretty easy to discern a troubled child. And that’s two TWO crazy papers….
I still worry every day I send my kids to school I love summer and vacations bc I feel like I can breathe. But honestly no where is safe anymore. We were planning on attending the KC Super Bowl parade last week. I was going to keep my kids home so they could go. We decided against it and I’m so glad we did. So much evil out there that we can’t even enjoy an exciting time without fear. I’m so tired of all the arguing about guns when we are literally the only country in the world with this problem.
