- Disinformation continues to be a threat to Ukrainian sovereignty and is also targeted at Western democracies and allies of Ukraine. Around the world aggressive information warfare threatens information security and social stability, especially in states which Russia seeks to destabilise or coerce into supporting it. As we saw in the 2016 US elections, it can potentially threaten results of voting, place undue influence on voters’ decisions and undermine democratic processes. This is more important than ever, with a slew of elections in 2024 and the advent of exponential AI created fakes.

Valeria Kovtun is Deputy Project Director at the Zinc Network, a cognitive resilience programme rolling out in Ukraine. Valeria was formerly Head at Filter, the National media literacy project founded in Ukraine. She also worked as a journalist at BBC Reel and has been a senior correspondent at major Ukrainian media organisations, and a fellow journalist at the United Nations. She also has a background in video production, content management and news broadcasting. Valeria Kovtun studied law, Media Communications, and journalism at several prestigious institutions, including the Kyiv National Economics University, the Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, and the LSE.

I can only add my heartfelt wish that Ukrainians knew that the vast majority of North Americans support Ukraine. Unfortunately, a small group of Maga Republicans, probably paid by Putin, have thrown a number of spanners in the works of aid from the US.
It's a pity when often the dishonest ignoramuses are trying to "educate" the public on the subject of our - i.e., of the former USSR nations' - reality and history [especially when it is coupled with a strong intention to divide the triune Russian people (i.e., Russians-Ukrainians-Belorussians) - this is the scammers' old colonial trick "divide and conquer"].
Ukraine, being in the Russian state and in the USSR, became the founder of the USSR and of the UN, increased its territory around seven-fold, population - in around 22 times, and finally became the third power in the world by the main civilization characteristics in 1980-ths!
As a Ukrainian, I state that the distorting Ukrainian history and reality media personalities and the instigating ethnic strife criminals should be brought to the future Ukraine Nation's Military Tribunal (in the way as it was done for the Nazis by Israel's Wiesenthal Institute) - together with the creators and supporters of the scabies/короста on the body of our nation - current puppet néonazi regime in Ukraine.
The Hitler collaborators are the main heroes of this regime, the elite force of its army is "Azov" - which was recognized as a néonazi organization even by the US Congress, the slogans and greetings of this regime are copied from the ones of the Hitler collaborators, the anti-nazi are killed by the "death squads" or imprisoned, the national thinker Oles' Busina is demonstratively killed and his killers are incorporated into the governmental structures!
Free Ukrainians will always remember and hunt (again, to bring to the justice - as Wiesenthal did) the war criminals who have brought and/or supported puppet néonazi regime in Ukraine and started the Civil war in our country ⚡

I can't understand how Ukraine managed to bring up such a brilliant generation that each one of them is the definition of democracy. Very open-minded and full of resilience, wisdom, and amazingly broad knowledge. I hope they get connected to trustable democratic movements in the Middle East as well. Invaluable knowledge and experience for an area that needs it the most. Many thanks for streaming these fantastic conversations.
Actually Ukraine and Ukrainians like her are very important for Europe nowadays, precisely for what she said about Westerners taking for granted democracy and letting democracy fade not even being aware of it or even being part of its destruction. Instead, Ukrainians and many East European people know how precious and valuable democracy is, and how vulnerable.
It's partly the unity of top activists in service of resiliance and partly "survivor's paradox". Besides that nobody knows better about autocratic powers' black-propaganda disinformation tactics and strategy than Ukrainians, Russians who escaped their regime andvalso other Eastern Europeans. Any questions about that to us. Also, we adopted democratic principles more recently than just about anyone else.

Thank you for the relevant and technical discussion. I watched it twice, and I will watch it again.
The reason I am spending the additional time is that I am trying to discern what "actions items" are appropriate for me to attempt to engage.
Due to complications of individual life, it is necessary for each viewer to be responsible for their own actions, it would also be helpful for the viewer to have a relatively concise summary of the greatest near-term and long-term needs that the audience can help with (in addition to funding and donations).
For me, "target-diffusion" is a primary source of inefficiency; so I typically counter this natural phenomenon by tackling the simplest tasks first.
What would be helpful to viewers seeking actionable items, is to ask your guests to summarize their top priorities for the audience to consider, and especially what (redundant) actions to avoid.
This is not meant to be a criticism... It is more a matter of my uncertainty and trust in my own analysis of the discussion.
This was a very substantial video.

Another time I am so deeply impressed by the level of knowledge we have the honor being presented with in your channel, Jonathan. Thanks also to Mrs. Kovtun and all your other guests.
I'm soooo glad you are bringing up this theme. In the last years I've got very stressed when seeing people in my circles replicating like parrots exactly the same narratives than Russian trolls. Western governments should call for their respective Russian ambassadors to ask for explanations about the massive amount of Russian and pro Russian trolls that invade all Western online platforms (especially in diaries, in the comment section of news related with the War, or with crucial local political issues: for instance thousands of trolls pretending to be European and saying the war is not our business, that we are getting poor because of it, that the US is tricking us, etc). That should be the very least messure, which won't resolve the problem but at least that would trigger a massive exposition of this issue in our media, and would make our societies aware of this massive issue, and conscious of it when Western citizens get exposed sneakily to Russian manipulation.

Don't Forget Russian Economy is very small compared to Europe... probably only the size of Spain.... without Oil it would be the size of Ireland !
Unfortunately that is one common misconception. Measured in US dollars maybe their economy is small. But that doesn't matter that much as rashists have the raw material and labor to create everything they need for the war in house for a small fraction of its US dollar price. So, production wise they are not small. People need to wake up and understand they will not be beaten just by wishful thinking, but by a lot of effort and sacrifice.
They miss advanced computer technology making industry. You can make a tank with your steel but without chips it wont do anything.

They've been buying non-military chips in the west through third parties and substituting them ..they are not particularly bothered if it doesn't always work or hit an actual target. That or blows up on their own forces. 🤷🏻♂️

It does. The number of times I have heard ordinary people say, even here in the UK: "well, this is a 'brother struggle'. We shouldn't get involved" or "NATO has infringed and expanded into Russia's area". It is persistent, brainwashing, but subtle, propaganda that seeps into people's head. People who do not know how to critically think are very susceptible to it. A very similar strategy happened with Brexit....no surprise, Russia helped to push the Brexit campaign in the UK.

As Mark Twain wrote: the lie travels half way round the world before Truth has time to put on its boots.
Lies can be prepared in advance or made up on the spot. They can have a better narrative than the truth. With technology, they can be tailored to the individual.
This speaker gives me hope that there are well informed media experts who are working to offset the malign influence of misinformation and propaganda.
These are the guys who create that stuff! Listen to what Russia does, and then realize that everyone else does it too.

I had no idea that after 100 years of western propaganda, we were so weak facing eastern facts.
We can present reality in many different ways so that people can take part in it and understand it.

I remember several decades ago during apartheid in South Africa, when the ANC received a number of Nobel Peace Prizes which also created transparency of the problems for the outside world.

For years now I have been following some channels that deal with prepping / survivalism. In recent years, I have noticed on some North American channels how the content that was previously interesting has been replaced by Russian propaganda. I have a hard time understanding it but assume these channels are being sponsored by forces that like the Kremlin's narrative.

I doubt it. Preppers and survivalists are the sort of people who are dissatisfied with western culture or concerned that it might collapse or just want to not be part of a herd mentality. It should not be surprising to you that such people are sympathetic to Russia.
I grew up with an entire family of extreme narcissists/sociopaths. Once you realize that people are just incapable of providing your self, you will form excellent resilience to manipulation

This is such a strange war. Technological information and influence at such speed and this is combined with old and modern armaments.
I don't think of the war as 'Ukraine's war' I think of it as 'Russia's war' or more 'Putin's war'. I think the apostrophe signifies ownership and we all know who owns the war, who instigated it, and who is responsible for it. The war has been foisted on Ukraine by Putin and Ukrainians don't want war, they just want Russia to get out of their country.
This is the Muscovite-Ukrainian war, the twelfth one since 1486 when Muscovy invaded Severia (northeastern Ukraine) for the first time. According to every single pool the total majority of Muscovite population does support the invasion of Ukraine and the genocide of Ukrainians, so there is no place for any apostrophe.

Thank you so much for this podcast! Discussions like this one about this information we do have absolutely not enough in Germany. Especially here in Germany. We are really in the focus of the Russians. Just like the USA we are so naïve!
Minds have been warped by long term use of social media, the lack of psychological resilience in being able to even ask themselves if they are being conned is off the charts. Sadly politicians the world over have taken advantage of the collective "weak mind". We must strengthen our psychological defense, Valeria is correct.
Counterfeit information is a real problem, today more than ever. How to disseminate truth?
To illustrate: In many lands, there is a problem with counterfeit money. If you were given the job of picking out such false money, how would you go about it? By memorizing every kind of counterfeit? No. Your time would be better spent if you studied real money. After you knew what real money looked like, you could recognize a counterfeit. Similarly, when we learn how to identify trustworthy sources of information, we can recognize those narratives that are false.
It takes effort and sadly people are so confused and just aren’t interested yet. ☑️

@@RudolphoAqui It's true of both the United States and Russia, but for different reasons. Certainly more media literacy, and historical literacy, is needed in both countries.
I've heard it said that Gorbachev's attempt to housebreak the Russian body politic was doomed to failure because there was no Russia equivalent to a Marshall Plan. Instead, Russia flailed around during the 1990s, with oligarchs amassing unchecked riches and common folk facing abject poverty. Anyone familiar with 1930s Germany can see where this has been going.

Btw, Valeria Kovtun says something very important about identity and the need to consciously defend it. One of the things I learned from reading Russian literature, is that Russia and Russians totally lack of identity, they've lived in an identity crisis for centuries, and they try to make up for that with extreme nationalism and aggressive imperialism. But nationalism and imperialism is not identity, so they never get to have one. You can see this in their obsession with the so elusive term "Russian soul". I say this because one of the reasons Russians, or better said, Moscovians, have tried so hard and for centuries to destroy Ukrainian identity is because Russians DON'T have one. So it is as if owning Ukraine Russia gets some kind of identity, and at the same time they need to destroy the perception that that identity is Ukrainian. You can see this very clearly in the novel of Gogol "Dead Souls". Russia is like a hungry and angry ghost with no identity that endlessly needs to destroy and to swallow its neighbour cultures and identities, in an endless failed attempt to get one. Ukraine has been the victim of this for centuries! And now Europe can be the next victim of this craziness.
I would disagree here. Until somewhere in the 19th century, the sense of national community was quite elitist. It is sometimes said that such a first awakening was the French Revolution, but other nations lagged behind. In our part of Europe (and I write as a Pole) there is an awakening of consciousness in the 19th century. In Poland, it is increasingly embracing the peasantry; we have a national revolution in Hungary, but also a national awakening in Germany, we have the revival of the Czechs, Slovaks, Croatians, Slovenians... Of course, we also have the Ukrainian national movements. So it is difficult to speak of centuries.
The problem with Russia may be that in the 20th century, the most important such nation-building experience may have been the Second World War, where Russians did not appear as Russians, but as inhabitants of the USSR. At that time, other nations were either building their new independence (Poland, Czechoslovakia, Yugoslavia) or transforming themselves after the changes (Germans, Austrians, Hungarians), which provided their own national perspective. Even if Ukraine does not have such a happy moment in its history, the attempt to create a state, or to build a consciousness in opposition to the Poles or the Russians, gave experience and preparation for national life. But not to the Russians, who experienced no other Russia than the imperialist one.
Without Ukraine, Russia cannot be an empire, very simple.

That may be true but most politicians are privately influenced by money
None the less, it is evident that Russia is fomenting trouble online in all corners of British society, by seeking to exploit and promote existing political divides e.g. Brexit, Immigration, Race, Crime, Scottish Independence, Israel/Palestine, LBGT etc. It can be seen that many of these issues contribute to social chaos and the paralysis of the current UK government.
It's important to note that Russia regards the UK as a particular enemy not only due to our support of Ukraine but also due to our unique geopolitical position bridging both Europe and the USA. So these targeted hybrid attacks are not going away and we should be doing more to effectively address them.

And, of course, private citizens (e.g. Douglas MacGregor, John Mearsheimer, Scott Ritter) can be corrupted as well, and some don't even require payment in money. Roger Waters is a useful idiot for Vladimir Putin simply because he receives anyone who makes him feel important and smart.

There are many British politicians in the far right and far left who don't want to support Ukraine and who want to be as away from European affairs as possible. My grandfather was a Nazi and Nazi Germany has committed similar crimes, but not at a psychological extent as Russia nowadays.
(Because Hitler did not have the Internet yet and could not spoil millions of people all over the world)
Nazi Germany was conquered and lost the war. So we Germans could understand what we’ve done.
The only key for Russians to also understand their crimes would be that they lose completely this war. But therefore Ukraine needs all help possible. (unfortunately we see exactly the opposite from the western countries.😡)
Russia entered WW2 as Nazi ally in 1939 (was kicked from the League of Nations), and got away with all its WW2 crimes only because it switched alliances in 1941. Putin does not invent anything but simply plagiarizes Hitler, the whole annexation of Crimea was plagiarized from 1938 annexation of Austria, same Nazi excuse (Ein Volk), same "referendum" with over 97% "in favor", they even got their own Z swastika on buildings, tanks, and clothes.

Why are cryptographic signatures still not being used to authenticate news sources and why are people not demanding them for all content? Maybe it’s not a perfect system, but it far surpasses what we have now and can support a web-of-trust framework where content platforms can set reasonable defaults that governments could legislate. (Default settings are not censorship.)
