  • Fourthin a series of monthly conversations on Silicon Curtain, about how Ukrainians are redefining the ideas of freedom and democracy, and why Ukraine must not be allowed to fall under Russian control.
    ----------
    ABOUT:
    Joe Lindsley is a traveller and a writer, and American reporting on Chicago's WGN Radio from Ukraine each and every weekday of Russia's full-scale war. He once was protégé to Fox News founder Roger Ailes, but Lindsley escaped that frenzied world where power mattered more than truth. He came to Lviv for a Ukrainian Catholic University journalism conference on Information Overload, AI, and Responsibility. Then the Coronavirus shut down world travel, and he stayed to build a better vision for the media industry.

    I have a friend in Kharkiv. She was bombed in the first attacks on Ukraine, she called me crying . I said everything will be ok, then her apartment was struck. She lived with her husband in a tent ⛺️ in the metro station for over 6 months. She then got an apartment, this was subsequently damaged . She moved to another apartment. I told her to leave , go West, but her husband is mobilised. Can’t leave the regions. Not many women would stick by their man in such conditions. Ukraine must fight. She spoke only Russian her whole life. Some people don’t want the Russian “dream “

    One of the most interesting discussions on this channel! Most impressive for its examination of the mindsets of those responsible for messages to the public about the Russo-Ukrainian war in Ukraine, the US, France and other NATO members. A welcomed examination of these mindsets versus concentrating on battlefield dynamics that tend to reveal little about why so many countries are at an impasse over how to proceed.

I've never met an American with such a way of clear and inspired thinking. Thank you for this kind and encouraging note. I do not have Ukrainian roots, but I am Irish, and I suspect somehow there is a deep connection between the Celts and the Ukrainians. More than that, Ukrainians are fighting for the values of faith, family, freedom that the Irish and Americans used to prize! And the Irish and Ukrainians, unlike so many others, were never the colonisers.
      Kharkiv is a city of possibility and inspiration! мало-помалу до перемоги

    • @olena-
      @olena- Před měsícem +1

      @@uafreedomnewsAh, this explains it. I had my own revelations during this interview. "Vikings on the hill" ) Counting Ukraine has a viking history, this makes perfect sense. It is historical memory code, throughout the centuries constant fighting for survival and freedom.
      I could break this into quotes, that I really liked "Maybe they don't know that it is possible to be totally free".
      Loved your comparison to a MAGA movement. Knowing lots of people and understanding where it comes from, they essentially want the same freedoms and rights that Ukrainians are fighting for. It doesn't make any sense they would side with Russia against Ukraine, it's like hurting yourself on purpose.
      The key to understand Ukraine is its unique ability to self-organize without a need of a higher power and that Ukrainians in general are not fond of authorities. Not many know that Ukraine in some part of its history was a totally military state run by Hetmans, military leaders. It was during Zaporizhian Sich. All decisions were made at a council of Kossacks. I know this as a fact, that nothing would change in regards to Ukrainian resistance in case Ukraine would not have a President at all. All Ukraine needs is an army and Gen. Zaluzhny was essentially a Hetman. There is a saying in Ukraine "Where there are two Ukrainians, there are three Hetmans". 😂 That explains alot the mentality of the people. Ukrainians are always dissappointed in their higher powers no matter how good they are but they always love their army, because army are People.
      Thank you again.

They are living the closest thing to the United order I have ever seen. When I left Ukraine after getting 6 families to safty. On the way to Poland ittook 4 days. The people from the local community were cooking food and having therre kids passing out water and the food to all those who needed it. This is the same spirit that attracted me to retire to Ukraine! One of the best interview I've seen. All categories. Starting from the banality of war atrocities then talking real politics and finally linking abstract concepts for most of us with being so concise. All of that in a hot war without sounding crazy.
    I've a friend in kharkiv too since the beginning of the invasion, he is very worried rightfully, not by Russians but our lack of support. Macron can be the most powerful/important man in Europe/the world right now or the weakest if he cracks under the internal/international pressure.
    But this definively convinced me it's a no brainer, even a small coalition of countries with France leading the pace, who is the only country having a credible nukes deterrance would be slowly a true game changer for Ukrainians. I see at least 5 countries who would follow at this moment. Maybe more.
    Ps : I'm gonna relay and translate this conversation in French.

    Thank you Joseph for reporting from Kharkiv. Many Kharkiv residents prior to year 2020 had affectionate connections with Russia. The invasion has changed that. In past decades I shopped in the large market Barabashova, and a few years ago enjoyed Shevchenko Park. Gorki Park was wonderfully maintained. The forests around Kharkiv provides protective cover near the combat lines. I now enjoy vacationing in Medellin, Colombia.

I did give up on watching most news about Ukraine- I was not sure what to think any more. This makes so much sense, coming from a fellow American who cuts through the double speak. US has lost much of its freedom and this talk brings that out. May God bring total victory and peace to Ukraine despite all the obstacles and pure evil coming at the country and its people.

  • @thomasjgallagher924
    @thomasjgallagher924 Před měsícem

    I agree with so much of what my fellow American and "L'vovian" has said especially about the constant reporting of the horrors and the sensationalism. L'viv has a violent-death rate during the war much lower than many American cities and we really would like to have more people come to see for themselves that what the news media does to keep eyeballs and advertisers isn't representational of how we live and it's largely deleterious to the war effort, not helpful. Go see Odesa and Kyiv too.
    I also find huge fault with both the folks like House Speaker Johnson and President Biden and his administration's naive view of how to conduct the war successfully and actually win (something Biden seems way too afraid of). I did take, though, Secretary Blinken's words differently this week. I heard something more like "we neither condone nor condemn" which I think is more strategic ambiguity talking than actually trying to deter Ukraine. Maybe I'm just being hopeful, but the people in the Pentagon should absolutely know these are priority targets, else they should be mopping the floors and emptying waste backets because they don't deserve those positions and the associated pensions.
    I'd also like to emphasise that what Kharkiv is doing in spirit is important, but it's not unique. I spend more time down south in Odesa, Mykolaiv, Kherson, and Zaporizhzhia and that's similar (being more extreme in Kherson and much less so in Odesa). Kharkiv and Zaporizhzhia are both within range of GPS-guided missiles fired from S300 systems (if so positioned) and their flight time is typically less than a minute, so there's no warning. Mykolaiv was like that before Kherson was retaken. Kherson, however is with range of field artillery and FPV and surveillance drones.
    I'll cap this on the discussion of construction. I'm an economic development guy and I get a little cautious when people get excited about remaking eastern Ukraine to what is was before the 2014. It is the wealthiest, most industrial, and most populous half of Ukraine by far, but it's mostly that way because of trade with Russia. Kharkiv was a huge centre for international commerce almost entirely focused on Russia. (English proficiency in Kharkiv is pretty bad.) That trade with Russia won't happen again for generations. Connections in Ukraine's future are going to be to the west and south and we shouldn't discourage people or businesses that find proximity to the EU and the West as attractive from settling as such. The US has experienced a similar shift (for different reason) but it's OK to plan for that. We don't have the luxury of wish lists; we have to make the most of every dollar and euro we can get because reconstruction money may be a lot like matriel aid: here one day, gone the next.
