I cannot believe the creators of this game thought it was a good idea to release a tutorial that doesn’t actually tell you how to do anything at all. This is really helpful. Thanks
ahahha been there buddy. after a lot of hours of videos and playing im understand something the game
lol every paradox game has a useless tutorial. Its almost like they do that on purpose to weed out the casuals. Or maybe just to fuck with us.
@@htx92 TBH, Paradox actually did a kinda good tutorial with Stellaris, at least I manage to win a round with my first game.
I think the point of the tutorial is basically just to tell you to go read the wiki xD
It tells you how to click a division then is like, well your on your own

Watching these videos actually makes me realize how bloody inefficient my strategies are in HOI4. I have a Hulk Smash strategy for everything - when rather some finesse is required. Multiplayer games would just chew me alive!!!
The strategy does workers Germany though LOL

Id suggest using only a single sub to scout ports. If u have subs convoi raiding he wont be able to tell wether ur scouting him or if its just another sub raiding. Its a lot more subtle otherwise he might see all those ships in front of that port and he will fortify it. Also wastes minimal fuel for scouting.
Yeah that would actually be kind of a good idea

Happy 75th anniversary of D-Day, gents.
Here's a tip from me:
after taking control over Africa as Allies, if you want to invade Italy - go for Mesina (Sicily). Almost always works.
Especially when you do it with George S. Patton (this tip goes too historical, though).

Well, that's an advice to new players.
This event doesnt have happy but sad day.
Learned some of thses from your other videos. Helped me quite a bit esp as Japan. One thing to add is that once divisions are prepared to invade, you can go to edit orders mode and change the destination without resetting the clock. Haven't tried in a while but iirc you will reset if you change the port. So I usually pick a random shore to invade until they are prepped then send the scout fleet to see where I can land, than change there and invade immediately.
Watching people with actual strategies and organised divisions remind me why I play on civilian...
thx :)

Great stuff. My one point concerning using "regular" troops as compared to marines , I'm pretty sure that even without having to fight, they suffer a heavy organizational cost while marines do not (?).
I've been defending France/Spain for a few years now, and even if the allies successfully land at an undefended portion of the coastline, counterattacks find the landing troops organization very low.
Which makes it vitally important to "drive them back into the sea" as quickly as possible.
Not to mention all the great loot (equipment) you gain. I recently kitted out 2 whole mechanized divisions with captured equipment from a large scale failed invasion. ;-)
Cheers.
The only time they'll actually suffer any penalties is if they have to attack when Landing. Otherwise they act the exact same way as a division that's been encircled until the port is secured. But because they haven't been attacked they start out with full organisation full Supply which will usually last for a little while until Port is taken which is why I recommend most of the time mixing Marine divisions to take ports and if the coastline is unguarded basic infantry divisions to land around them to cut off the port so the division guarding is encircled
@@dustinl796 marines get other buffs e.g. higher org from research and from the special forces tech tree as well.

Great video man!

Man, realizing I couldn't go through friendly territory to attack someone, then spending 20 minutes trying to fuckin land via naval, got me tilted
I have huge problems with naval invasions since the last dlc, because Germany is totally overpowering.
I hope your Tipps are going well
All you have to do really is just follow the tips I put forth in this video and they should work a lot better
YES THANK YOU. Its so damn impossible because Germany spams an un unfathomable amount of the divisions and practically garrisons every little thing. As soon as you land prepare to greet a horde of Italian, german and vichy divisions. I can already see Dustin was struggling near the end. Seriously though the MTG is just the Axis on steroids.
@@wargamer5199 I know I landed 20 infantry divisions and 30 armored divisions with help from the uk free France Denmark Australia Belgium Norway Greece And Poland and still got pushed back while they were fighting soviets
Just one detail, are you sure about the ports? i mean because some times i do naval invasion (most of the time Canada and US) usually i get low supply because the port level is low, but aparently the game just take the higher level port like main base and the others just add bonus instead of having multiple supply lines.
Btw, good use of paratropers, i usually never use them but for hard late game will try them later
I probably should have gone into a little bit more detail regarding the ports, the highest-level is how much Supply you will get including adding the infrastructure. You want to go for his own that has more ports in it because even though it may lower your supply slightly then the other Zone if you lose one port or maybe even two you will still have enough Supply to keep attacking

Great Video! Learned how to naval invade better lol.
Glad to help 😁
The majority of the time I use para's I only use them to surround a bottleneck (like in Africa at el-alamien) so this was some nice inspiration on how to better use them, thank you. Though I probably won't use the 1 unit aiming trick for naval invasions much as most of the games I play in I have to throw in close to 60 divisions over three different areas, while at 3 or 4 speed making the whole single division selection a bit too slow for my tastes. Still interesting to think about.
yea good point
Wait, do all ports of a province count for the supply? I always thought it only takes the highest. Overall i don't really get how supply works, might be a video idea.
Actually I've done a video about how Supply works But to answer your question yes. All the ports are added together to sum up the entire Supply The Zone can get which then translates over to the infrastructure level. You can have 10 ports that are all level 1 in a Zone and the game will act the same way if you had just a single level 10 Port there
@@dustinl796 thank you for the information. But i gotta go now. I have a video to watch.
I'm gonna show this to my friend who keeps rushing ENTIRE ARMY GROUPS INTO A SINGLE PORT. Making them starve, cutting their fighting ability, can't gain land fast enough, German units arrive, since we are starving and out of supply we get decimated and my friend loses 72 divisions.
Yeah you should never really Naval invade unless you're either doing it as a joke, purposely just trying to slow Germany down but not expecting to push. And really the only time you should ever invade is when you're totally ready since it takes so much effort you might as well go big every time
Is there a problem if I ask you what game recorder you use?
Also do you recommend (once you captured britanny/normandie) building new ports, airfields or infrastructure? If so which one?
Well it really depends on your specific situation in the game, for example if you're low on Supply but have a level 10 Port there you want to max out your infrastructure. If you're unable to get air superiority and it's actually slowing your troops down but everything else is fine then you should get your airfields to higher levels. Sorry to B so out there but there's really not a yes or no answer for it
You are the best. Now I know why my naval invasion never work.
Glad I was able to help :-)
Why is 60 CAS attached the optimal number? what about fighters?
I'll do a whole video on the air support thing later but the sum it up for right now, 3 cas deploy in a battle per combat width, any extra either dont join or just sit in reserve incase you loose a couple. Since most divisions are 20 combat width all you need to do is 20 * 3 and that's how much cas can join the battle per division. That means if there's two enemy divisions fighting you and they're both 20 width then you can have a Max of 120 enter the battle
doashoobs I think when ur below 100 u get +25% on your ace bonuses (not 100% sure). And obviously with stacks of 60 ull have more stacks which means that ull have more aces. Dont know why 60 in particular tho.
@@jigsaw2642 Aces are scaling with airwing size. The numbers you see you get with a 100 planes. If you have less the numbers go up, if you have more, the bonuses scale down. But not by +25%, they do it proportionally.
To get aces, you should use 1 plane airwings, which is cheesy, but works. To be efficient in battle, you need 3 times to combat width of planes. So 60 is efficient if you plan on 20 combat width. If I have low number of planes I usually go with 50 to get the most out of them, if I have a lot, I get lazy, and assign 100. AI always uses 150 planes (vanilla) per airwing, so if you want to counter them, it is something to keep in mind.
@@dustinl796 Videos on little stuff like that would be really helpful - I had no idea about that 3 per width thing and I've no idea what naval invasion defense is
Thx thats good to know.
What if after connecting air wings to ground troops you go beyond the air wings range and there are no friendly airports?
A way to defend against a naval invasion as germany is pump out naval bomber and set them to the channel
Do you have to have man the guns to do amphibious landings?
Finally, now I can dday as Australia, oh wait I already did one
Lol
Perhaps
Nice video
Thx 😁
*thanks now i can naval invade the heck out of norway*
what do you think of making 40 width paratroopers to actually hold better in case if encirclement fucks up, or takes more time than needed, or do you consider it a waste of special units batallions?
That could work but due to the fact the organization is almost zero when they land the AI usually steamrolls them incredibly quick
@@dustinl796 got it, thanks for answer
Do you have any opinions on amphibious vehicles and what they contribute to naval invasions?
Personally I don't see a point in using them that much. Mostly it's the same thing as a regular tank accepted doesn't have Naval Invasion penalties which if you have good Marine divisions you don't have those anyway
Considering the addition of amphibious mechanized and armor will they be of any use in a multiplayer game? (in terms of aiding naval invasion)
To be honest I don't really enjoy people using them that much. I've even tried adding them to my divisions a few times and it's just basically the same thing as a regular medium tank
I search for a simple naval invasion.
What i found: a big D-Day invasion
Never would have thought that I would spend this much time to see the map. Hoi4 is a great game with cheats (can be found in cheatland).
Instructions unclear:

New smile :-)
@@dustinl796 Really love the effort you put in your vids.
I'm so frustrated. I just wanted to know how to invade Liberia as Brazil and instead got a lot of stuff not applicable. I think I'm about ready to give up.
Every time I play HOI4 I literally spend half the time watching CZcams videos on how to actually play. And I've owned the game for 2 years. Stupidly complicated and makes it super hard to enjoy it at all.
Idd like you to try the same invasion in multiplayer where there is a Good germany
Actually I normally do all these steps whenever I'm going to be doing a naval invasion in multiplayer and it works probably 80 or 90% of the time
Wait, since MTG you can use the same port to launch multiple invasions?! Why do I keep building those level 1 ports all over the place then?!
I always used this tactic (send one or two divisions at a time, but draw plans for an entire army) and the only limitation was the number of ports... If it's gone, it will be really cheesy now, you can do a 3 day invasion with unlimited troops, instead of waiting a month or two planning...
BTW, any news about 1.7? I hear it breaks all the mods, even tho they said it won't, so I have not updated yet, but any thoughts? Is it faster in 64 bit, or just because they stole a guy's mod that optimised events, and what I used already anyway?
Actually it does break the majority of the mods. Can always upgrade or downgrade depending on if you feel like it so that's a bonus if you want to try it out. From my experience so far it doesn't make the game go to much faster but it does make it go a lot smoother and less crashing. 4 multiplayer though it seems as though desyncs happen more often now
@@dustinl796 Smoother and less crashing? Even during the testing of my own mod, I only managed to CTD once this year, maybe a dozen times last year, you can't really go much smoother than that...
MP isn't my thing, but performance in SP is usually a big problem. The mods I use/make are 90% revolving around lagfixing, 9% realism and 1% flavour to keep it on a bearable level...
I disagree with the bombing idea
If you bomb the area your invading then just sit there and wait till you’ve repaired it you can invade like it’s butter. Also I think damaging the close airfields and forts etc is worth advancing slower especially if you’ve bombed the capital they will be just as slow so you’ll be fine
Is it possible to catch up to the British fleet. I cant build enough ships it seems like for every 10 ships I build they build 50 even when I have enough resources and more dockyards, infact I cant seem to build any sort of large navy to contest any of the allies (as Italy or Germany) oh and I only play on singleplayer. Can you make a video on how to build a large 100-300 ship fleet, if it's even possible
If you're playing Germany it's really difficult to do it, most of the time you just need to get better ships and a lot of screens,
Having issues invading Norway from Denmark with Germany. I do everything you say but I am guessing I just don’t have enough ships.
some stuff might be in your way, make sure your ships are on naval invasion support and you have alot of naval task forces split up to get the naval sup on the way, also for denmark make sure youve gotten the sea areas beside denmark that lock you from the sea. (just marking all) also sometimes naval invasions wont work if your ships have issues detecting enemy ships that stop you from the 75% naval superiority needed to naval invade
Paratroopers never work for me and it pisses me off. Good vid tho
A bit late, but how to do effectively the historic focus,.what are the focus to pick, the timing and all...
It depends for whatever country, if you're talking about Germany it goes Austria, Czechoslovakia, then invading Poland
@@dustinl796 Mostly about US. I always get ahead OR so back of all
Who else when you first got the game, would make 500 Division Armies under a field marshal, and then would make your entire army do the naval invasion, then get pissed when you see they all die
Not when I first got the game. No
@@dustinl796 well that is rude to upstage me like that
Forgive me! 😭
Did you say that because you saw my comment the other day where my kneecap dislocated? If so poor taste -_-
I think my game is broken bc when I'm assigning troops for a naval invasion it says 0 division and when I try to add them they won't add to it
ok but how to naval invade? Like how do i tell my troops to get on a boat and just cross.
I know it but at first I was like wtf
And what if the country is so far from you? For example Dutch East Indies or India. With the ships you have you cant go this far idk why. Can you do a tutorial on hoe to naval invade far countries?
In your USA guide how do you manage to get war support high enough for giant wakes to be put so high on the list
Sometimes it happens and sometimes it doesn't. For example sometimes Germany might do Rhineland and very soon after in historical mode for some reason anchlaus and when that happened since World tension goes up the war support for the United States goes up

I have naval superiority in the zone and max invasion capacity and my ships are set to escort, but I can’t assign divisions to the he order?
Usually that means you're Naval Invasion Technology isn't enough, or you don't have enough convoys.

What happens if France builds ports in all the coastal provinces in Northern France?
Well as USA it is: Free real estate.
As Germany you can just delete them.
Then it becomes free real estate
Wow LOL, I accidentally stole your comment. But actually you cannot delete ports
@@dustinl796 yeah, I thought that it would be the only logical thing since you can delete factories.
@@General_Townes Yea that's what also came to my mind on defending that coastal area.
Destroying all the naval bases so the allies don't get supply. Though it seems it wasn't made realistic and you can't do that but ofc that would be hell of an OP tactic.
October 4th 1941 Germany has annexed the world after learning how to use navy
Is air supply effective for encircled troops?
The 6th German army may disagree
@@moonrammer1647 I was talking about the game not in real life
If you spam transport planes, they may be effective
@@arianas0714 yes but no one has tried that
It sort of depends on what you're trying to do and how you're trying to do it. You already get penalties for being encircled regardless if you have Air Supply or not but even if that wasn't a factor for single 40 width Division I think you need something like a hundred air transports dropping Supply a day to keep it even so it doesn't lose any more to attrition
What about the "0 division assigned to this mission" ? Would it be because I don't have naval superiority or something ?
It could be a few things. 1 the field Marshal has an order already, 2 the general has an order with those troops already like Garrison or fall back line. 3 you may be trying to Naval invade with too many units and should check your Naval technology first 4 you could just be low on convoys and not have enough. One thing to do is select a few of the divisions you want to use in The Invasion and hold control and left click The Invasion order while the divisions are selected
i get that a lot when I try and set up a naval invasion, but I can just add divisions to the plan (ctrl+right click, I think)
kingdom come deliverance
Nice...
Naval invasions annoy the hell out of me in this game since setting them up is more convoluted than any other game I have played. You would think it's, get your guys ready, click point A, click point B, make sure you have the criteria met (escort/intel/etc.) and there you go. But about 50% of the time it gives me some sort of error, most common being "no units assigned" even if there is, and then if I cancel orders to attempt to fix it, it cancels the beaches, but apparently not the path nor invasion in and of itself (got to disband and reform for that...). It's really frustrating how inconsistent it is.
I was a little bit disappointed Naval invasions didn't get a larger rework with man the guns myself
would using marine tanks w/ marine infantry be good for defeating coastal ports and coast lines in a multiplayer match or regular infantry good enough?? I presume a smart and intelligent hoi4 player will defend the atlantic wall with troops anyways so...
The Marine Amphibious tanks pretty much act like regular tanks but they're slightly weaker I think and don't get as many penalties when Naval invading
What if you just strategic bomb their capital infrastructure?
I mean that is where all the supplies come so :D.
+ Strategic bombers seem to have very good range so that doesn't seem to be impossible. Ofc if enemy notices this then there will go a lot of bombers down when they will add fighters but I think it could be more efficient than surrounding one area ^^
++ When you are about to advance then there would be less problems of having supply shortage until you reach the capital "zone".
So it definitely works but the only main issue is once you do that they put up a bunch of planes very rapidly
Anyone else just here to learn how to Naval invade and that's it
The thing I love about this channel is when I have an issue with something, need to know something,or want to learn something new I can just come here
The thing I love about uploading videos on this channel as I get to help people learn stuff about the game :-)
Why couldn't it be easier like Rise of Nations? If you have boats ready for you're troops, you should just be able to click them to anywhere on the map of the oceans!
I was trying to invade Eastern Soviet Union, and I got that port that was in the city that begins with a v, I got it, but I had no supply even though I got a port. What is that all about?
damaged port/infrastructure. check the construction tab if you have a save and see if towards the bottom it was damaged or destroyed :)
How was Luxembourg independent at the start of the video?
In multiplayer a lot of players will not invade them so they can have one Frontline constantly update with the troops as they move in the France from the West and not overlap with the troops on the Maginot Line
Wow just spend hours figuring wtf my troop doesnt want to invade the island next door
HAH I just only need one port and I will flood my entire army there and just blitz through them with my stacked manpower there
I suck so bad bruh I had to raid a small island and I had 12 divisions and lost them all.
I can’t assign troops for the naval invasion
Artillery has a negative modifier when invading if I´m not mistaken? So makes no sense combining them with Marines..?
Marines get a bonus tho, and you need that extra soft attack when trying to land, so you just balance it out with the marines. Maybe Amhibious tanks could be an alternative, but I was so angry that they introduced it instead of, say, armoured cars, or glider-borne tanks, that were actually used, unlike these, and they look so ugly, that I never, not once used them ever...
@@bencom01 yeah but when landing inf is better bcz they get less penalized. Once on shore yes the art is better.
The problem with using only Marine templates is even though you will have bonuses for amphibious Landings your soft tack won't be high enough to actually break anybody off of a port. Even with adding artillery usually you still have enough of an in phibious landing bonus to totally cancel out any penalties you would have which I did in another video while ago showing 8 Marines with 8arty and still had a plus 40% amphibious bonus
@@dustinl796 I meant that a division with inf added instead of artillery would while landing have higher soft attack bcz inf get less penalties?
@@FurryCruz artillery gets you a huge amount of soft attack, but has, let's say, 10% penalty. Marines, let's say, give you 50% buff (don't remember actual numbers, sorry), and so buff from Marines is higher than penalty from artillery, and this buff affects artillery soft damage as well
Can you tell me what mods if any are you using??
Actually I'm not using any for the video. The only thing I am doing is in post-editing the colors to make it look nicer
What hoi 4 mod is this?
I'm just getting started in hoi4 and I'm so trash I managed to fail a naval invasion against the Dominican Republic as the US
actually thats not a bad thing, naval invasions give a penalty from 80% - 95% which is hardly enough to do anything. you need marines so there is no penalty and set a naval group with a few battleships near by for a shore bombardment bonus :)
@@dustinl796 Thanks. I'll get the hang of it but jumping into this game is pretty damn hard at first. Playing on easy and Japan's about to kick my ass because my entire military is hung up in Latin America and the Mediterranean
