Vowels in Afrikaans and how to pronounce them

Learn Afrikaans short vowels, twin vowels and double vowels and how to pronounce them correctly. Words in English that have the same sound as the Afrikaans vowels are also shown for comparison to assist your learning.
The sounds for the vowels are quite different to English. When the vowels are duplicated they give a longer sound and are called twin vowels.
When we combine two separate vowels they are called double vowels.

The first tip I can give is to increase your Afrikaans vocabulary. No grammar lesson will help without this. Also listen to Afrikaans and get familiar with the Afrikaans language sounds.
