  • In Ukraine, thousands more civilians have fled Russia's renewed ground offensive on the northeastern front. Kyiv has sent reinforcements to the border of the Kharkiv region where there are intense battles with artillery and mortar fire. Russia says it has captured several villages. Ukraine's military chief admitted the situation is difficult but said his forces are doing everything to hold defensive lines and positions.

Not bad at all. Russia just took undefended territory. It took them 2.5 years to capture 22 km and most of that area was abandoned because it was part of the buffer zone. Russia troops retreat when there is resistance, so they will retreat again soon.

Continuous NATO expansion towards Russian border after the collapse of the Soviet Union is the root cause of the problem. Imagine Putin or Xi Jinping trying to form a military alliance similar to NATO with Mexico or Cuba. I bet US will send troops in a flash and neutralize that threat. No world peace as long as there is a massive private military industry. They always need a theater of war to sell their goods and their politician buddies always give them one. NATO kept Russia as an adversary after the collapse of the Soviet Union and Russians were never allowed into the European family as Germany was allowed back in after the WW2. Putin would not have been in power this long if NATO was disbanded at the same time Warsaw Military alliance was dismantled. Putin is using the NATO threat to rally the Russians just as US/EU Military industry is using Russian bogeyman to sell their expensive combat toys.

NATO has only been sending 40 year old down armored customer models from scrap yards HIMARS is over 40 years old and going to be retired next year. Still better than anything Russia has. If the Ukrainians had 5% of the equipment Russia has they would have won the war in 6 months. 7000 Russian tanks destroyed LOL. After the fall of Avdiivka Ukraine was supposed to fall back to fortifications on the outskirts but none were built. Zelensky's foolish attempt to invade Russia from Ukraine's north & attack Belgorod has forced Russia to annex another land corridor in Ukraine's Kharkiv & Sumy region also. Putin had warned about this long back. Putin had floated idea of securing buffer territory into this region too.
A divided Ukraine can not become Article 5 guaranteed member of NATO & a divided buffer country which not only keeps enemy (NATO) away but also provides secure, annexed land corridor to Russia's national borders can become the best guarantor of Russia's national security. Any price Russia may pay now will be worth trillions for the benefit of its posterity.

      RISE OF THE RUSSIAN EMPIRE
Joining forces with Poland, Austria and Denmark, Peter I (tsar of Russia, 1682-1725) attempted to push Sweden King out of the Baltic region during the Great Northern War. Sweden defeated these four countries in 1700 with superior technology. Peter I retreated and began in 1703 to modernize his military. In 1704 Peter I invaded and defeated Ingria (Finland). In 1709 Russia met and decisively defeated Sweden at Poltava in Ukraine. Peter I took the northern Baltic regions from Sweden and in 1710 he conquered Tallinn (Raun p.33). In 1721 Peter I signed the treaty of Nystad with Sweden to end the Great Northern War (Kirby 1990, p. 257, 300-315) Peter I declared Russian Empire and himself Emperor of All Russia. He made St. Petersburg the capital of the Empire, which remained so until the end of the Empire. (St. Petersburg Times, Bowlt p. 93)
