Honestly, I’d probably feel the same way if I was your age. I’m 33, and I’m embarrassed for her. I think we’ve all seen our fair share of people trying to break G rated molds but this one is definitely up there on the cake tier! It’s really sad to see someone who was seen kinda like an icon go from what she was to idgaf about any of you and basically never did. As a disabled woman, I’m very angry and disappointed by Jojo’s treatment towards that girl. It’s a painful reminder that ableism still exists and people continue to deny that disabled people still experience it. Nowadays ableism isn’t always blatantly obvious, people think that as long as they don’t use the r-slur, it’s not ableist…if you think ableism doesn’t exist after finding out how Jojo treated that girl, then you’re likely part of the problem😔

Some people are abused as children, and they grow up and NEVER want another child to be hurt. Some people are abused as children, and they grow up wanting to hurt children too. Unfortunately the stereotype that all victims become abusers is used as an excuse to not help victims and leave them to the wolves of society. There’s no scientific link between it. Most victims are traumatized for life but never become an abuser themselves. Some do, and that’s because they have it in them to do so.
I think that she falls into a 3rd category, this is all she has known as her mum has said that she knew from the time that JoJo was a toddler that she was going to be a star and started dyeing JoJo's hair at the age of 2. She doesn't realise yet that the way that she grew up was abusive, she thinks it is normal.
One example is that one of the things that Leigha spoke out about was JoJo getting them to rehearse in sweats as in a hot room to build up stamina (dangerous for Leigha with her health conditions), one of the complaints on one of Lady Gaga's tours was that they were made to do the same thing. The commonality is that the choreographer for Lady Gaga's tour is the same one that choreographed JoJo's tour and her Karma music video.
JoJo seems to think yep that worked, it built up my stamina so it is a good thing, she doesn't seem to think deeply enough about things to see that there could have been a different way to achieve that same end goal.

That’s even worse because bleeding is a sign that something is wrong. Sometimes spinal surgery is done with incisions on the front of the neck or in the abdomen for better access depending on what the surgery is going to do. Too much activity after surgery can cause scar tissue which can cause chronic pain. Even popped stitches is a sign that this poor girl was doing too much.
Contracts are contracts so she couldn’t even drop out if she felt like she was doing too much. She could be sued, and the Siwas have enough money to make that family lose everything retaining lawyers.

I don't like comparing people to other people...but her behavior has NEVER tracked as something consistent with other people her own age.
There's nothing wrong with cultivating a childlike persona, but the lack of growth within that space was always a red flag for me. Other kids are able to actually grow out of or stay comfortable in certain mindsets, but JoJo has been kind of stunted in this pre-pubescent bubble that she could never stretch out in, for far too long in an unhealthy way.
There's maintaining a sense of wonder as you age, and then there's maintaining a vulnerable naivety that can be easily manipulated as you age. There's protecting a child's innocence, and then there's innocence in perpetuity. One is reasonable, the other is controlling.

Leigha is the youngest of her kids so the others are adults, so not quite the same thing. Also they weren't told that they needed to relocate so they were out there when they were needed for things and then would come back home in between, iirc the longest they were in LA at one time was 3 months. So not great but not quite the same.

Anjie actually had to give up her job so that Leigha could do what they thought was an opportunity. They had been on one reality TV show before as it was at their studio and had had a really good experience. They didn't know that doing things with Jess and JoJo would be so different.

I have spina bifida. Most kids with spina bifida have pretty limited mobility, but like this girl, I got lucky. However, I still struggle with chronic pain and flexibility and stamina issues. Overworking yourself when you have a disability won’t just lead to burnout, it could genuinely make your disability worse, potentially permanently. That girl deserved so much better.

@@Imasexafender I mean, she was child who wanted to be famous, and she was being manipulated by Jojo’s mom, who had worked with child-manipulating expert Abby Lee Miller. The spina bifida is an added layer to the problem, since she had to have known that her condition could change at any moment. That probably made her feel like she had to use all the time she could to dance while she still had full mobility. If anyone is to blame other than Jojo’s mom, it’s Leigha’s mom. She should have known better than to let her child continue dance so soon after surgery. The real person to blame is absolutely Jojo’s mom though, it sounds like she made everyone involved basically sign their lives over to her.

Genuinely unbelievably horrible! If I had someone working for me and they started bleeding out of their freaking belly button, you bet your buns imma have them quit for the day and go to the doctor, heck I'll drive them there myself if I have to because that is not normal and honestly terrifying. Telling someone to slap a maxi pad over abnormal bleeding is in no universe an ok thing to do
belly buttons aren’t holes. if you are bleeding out of your belly button something has obviously happened. also everyone knows belly buttons are stinky but that’s because they’re absolutely full of bacteria. she could even get an infection which is already common after surgery. poor girl. that’s just cruel and unusual like literally.
A lot of surgery in the lower abdomen is done through the bellybutton, so it's quite likely she has had it surgically opened in the past. It's used specifically because the most effective way to avoid visible scars is to put them somewhere no one will ever see them.

Hearing the fact that she bled thru her belly button and was told to put a freaking PAD on it, brought back so many horrible memories from competitive dancing. That shit is no joke and Dance Moms only scratched the surface of the toxic dance community. I wish for the girls who have to endure what unfortunately comes with competitive dancing, all the mental and physical healing they need.

I work with children with disabilities and I myself have disabilities, I cannot even begin to tell you how *vehemently* I hate ableism. If you employee or manage people, you have a legal obligation to accommodate them, not to mention it's just the f*cking bare minimum.
