- There's no doubt about it-when it comes to casting the villain, Gary Oldman is usually your go-to guy. He currently shines opposite Denzel Washington in the action packed thriller The Book of Eli.
The story centers on a lone hero named Eli (Denzel Washington) who must fight his way across the wasteland of post apocalyptic America to protect a sacred book that might hold the key to saving the future of humanity. Oldman plays Carnegie, the self-proclaimed leader of a small makeshift town devoid of standard necessities, services, and most noticeably, laws. Carnegie is determined to take possession of the book Eli is guarding and will stop at nothing to get it.
Tribute's Bonnie Laufer spoke with Oldman in Los Angeles about why he was so drawn to this role and how he's getting a little agitated over his nickname, "Scary Gary." He also lets us know how he feels about a possible reunion party for all of the cast and crew of the Harry Potter series, now that the films are finally coming to an end.

Gary Oldman, the actor on this planet who can sport an ascot and not be wildly pretentious. Long live Oldman!
Gary Oldman is straight-up one of the very best actors not only of our generation, but any generation, IMHO. His ability to disappear into a role is astonishing.
Brings a hell of a lot of his own ideas and input to a movie, when they made Leon, cast and crew were just in awe.
That's cool. I got to see Gary Oldman while he was wearing that Beatles shirt! He is one of the greatest people you would ever meet, in person. Noting but great things to say about him. And in addition, he delivers some of the most brilliant performances caught on film; of Any time period. Anybody who knows anything, with his kind of diversity, Gary Oldman will always be one of the greatest actors of all time.
Gary Oldman rules. He's SO GOOD at any role he plays. A legend!!!
This guy is such an awesome actor. He doesn't have to try hard at all. Just a natural actor
he looks like hes wearing his same costume in the poster behind him
Cause he a straight G lil bro
Gary Oldman is one of those actors who's good at just about ANY role. He's done a VARIETY of roles throughout his career.
Gary's smile....Gary's eyes.... that man is gorgeous!
The best character actor that ever lived!
One of Them g
Oh and I know someone who met Gary Oldman once in England and said he was very nice and interesting to talk to. Funny too which most people don't get to see unless they hang around him. There's very few actors/actresses I respect for the way they live and how they handle themselves. Three of my favorite examples happen to be in this movie lmao 3 leads no less. So many are stuck up & in love with themselves, egos. Gary, Mila, Denzel have no ego and are just good human beings.
Nice Gary, he is very attentive to the questions and i love how he is speaking about Denzel : my two favorites actors in the same movie. I want to see "the book..."
Thank you 5*
Yeah it's amazing how well non-american actors and actresses speak with american accents.
Very impressive. He sounded like a New York Jew in Book of Eli.
I think because they dissect the punctuations and shape of American accents so deeply, they can punch it out with real character. I don’t know.
Gary Oldman and Denzel Washington it doesn't get any better than that!
This movie was just brilliant.
MY FAVORITE ACTOR👏👏GARY OLDMAN IS SO GOOD AND BRILLIANT WITH HIS ROLES. HE IS SUCH A FANTASTIC VILLAIN ON SCREEN🔥🔥👍
Brilliant actor great film!
Gary Oldman is a GENIUS!!!
How many actors over time are remembered for their Oscars? They're remembered for their films and their acting. To hell with Oscars. He's the best English-speaking actor in the world.
His Southern American accent is my favorite in The 5th Element..lol
Book of Eli is actually a revelation. Denzel Washington and Gary Oldman are in my opinion the best two actors of their generation. Really wish we got more movies with them together they would have killed it in a Tarantino flick together or another action flick like this directed by Tony Scott who they both did amazing films like Man on Fire and True Romance with
the range of this guy in incredible!
Gary rocks as Sirius Black, so much that the character, however fictional, was profoundly endearing.
haha "You were in Spiderman?" LOL You can tell she was trying to be funny and Gary was just trying to make a point so he's like...No stupid XD....I LOVE YOU GARY!!!!
Fantastic actor no question
One of the greatest movies ever with great actors/actresses.
No doubt, Gary Oldman is the best actor actually living.
Maybe the best actor ever
Yeah I very rarely get drawn to or admire someone famous because I don't know them but i find it fascinating when someone in a industry like Hollywood that they stay level headed and so humble & live privately. That drew me to Mila who's also in this movie ^^ (plays Solara) 'cause young actresses are usually sucked into Hollywood worse than veteran actors & she's never seen or heard when not promoting. Down to earth & Humble. Met her 2 years ago. Really admire the likes of her & Gary. Rarities.
I loved him in the professional to
please God give me Gary Oldman.
Love him! Great actor!
Gary points out the obvious conundrum immediately. Love it!
Hes askes if he can say the wors pimp but kets the fuck word roll right out! Lol great actor definatly one of my fav!
I had no idea he sounded like this! Amazing talent to be able to change his voice so much and so many different ways.
i love him. great actor, one of the bests
Great interview! Gary is adorable! :-)
You're a Mozart fan. I love him too. I loooooooove Mozart.
This lad is my idol.🤘🤘🤘
Most under rated actor of all time.
Great movie with some wonderful talent!
Well it was my friend that was lucky lol He's the one who met Gary in England while I was stuck here being jealous :( lmao but I did hang with Mila and bf Mac (Home Alone) in NYC which i feel VERY lucky for since I admire and love them hugely. Honestly, if not for knowing their careers and history etc, I would think they were people with regular jobs hangin out or a friend I've known for years. So down to earth and nice. Refreshing in Hollywood. Had fantastic & fun conversations.
GARY...I FRICKIN LOVE YOU!!!
LMFAO at the beginning. Genius.
His original accent is cockney as he was born is South-London. But he's been living in the US for about 20 years.
Scary Gary. Awesome.
He was an awesome villian in the movie! Too much the climax wasn't that long...
GAry Oldman, simply THE BEST!!
Totally agree. All this nominations and awards business is somewhat irrelevant. For God's sake, Charlie Chaplin's only Oscar was more of a life-time achievement award and the examples can go on. The industry clearly doesn't really recognise and reward its truest talents. Doesn't matter though, Gary's still #1 in my book, and I am sure that millions out there agree with me. We love you Gary!
I love this man for ever!
Love this movie and enjoy his work!
i have the Book of Eli holding on netflix, cant wait to see it! i adore Gary. i recently watched The Professional, loved it. He has the most beautiful eyes, one of the greatest actors of this or any generation. i do not agree with his politics, but i still love him!
wait a sec? HE HAS A BRITISH ACCENT!?!
hahaha that harry potter party bit at the end. what an awesome person
It suprises me that so many don't know he's English, myself am "suprised" over the fact that the Englishman hasn't recieved any Oscars yet.
Is he the cutest man or what?
I love that naughty laugh at 3:02
Loved gary in the fifth element...def a top 5 actor of our time
AMERICAN PIMP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Has THE most quotable quotes EVER.
man dude after watching his movies and noticing his real voice, its kinda funny but hes very talented
One of my favorite actor 💖
Movie is just as good as i remember!
love you gary! :*
I'm sorry i should have made my comment clear. I wasn't implying you thought he was humorless just to clear that up lol. If you check Mila's interview with this lady, she talks about Gary doing a really dramatic scene one minute, then tap dancing around the next while the she was still crying trying to get over the scene lmao so i guess he acts like this a lot. He'd do great in comedy I agree! he was hilarious as the drunk on friends. Definitely a legend & one of the greatest actors of all time.
Love it!!
"Scary Gary...but I'm not!"
Kinda scary when he said it though.
I like very much Gary This vidio is fantastic!!! ; )
It was great to see Gary Oldman play such a nasty antagonist again. Of course the film had Denzel Washington in it and he's also a great actor but I gotta say Gary Oldman's villain was what excited me most about this film and I loved it.
I had no idea Gary was British. He did such a good American accent in the Batman movies.
Good point buddy, as you sa,y he's really great with accents and he's also underrated which kind of pisses me off, I feel he deserves some recognition. I really liked him in Leon where he plays a cop going a bit mental.
Omg it's Sirius Black. Haha he's really cute.
his name isn't gary oldman. HIS NAME IS VIKTOR REZNOV AND HE WILL HAVE HIS REVENGE.
hope to see that part, and dear lord! I love him even more now if possible!! HE's wearing a BEATLES shirt! AUGH!! i love you gary, you'r awesome!!! can I come to the party?!? hehe
I'm surprised people didn't know he was British. He's awesome at accents, though, so I get it.
Legend.
No, that's a totally different movie dog.
His voice!!? WTF!!?
One Of The Top Fucken Painters Ever To Live !
Love his Art !
5:45 6 months of kung fu lol
she asked about a party and a big harry potter reunion and it happened!
Get off my plane!!!
LOL
of course he's british
Gary Gordon Carnegie Sirius Oldman!
Scary Gary 😂
"Its Dana Carvey"!!! lol
Well, I thought it was like a Western. It reminded me of Western; sort of like a post apocalyptic Western; with trucks instead of horses. The hotel I stayed in was a Western; a Best Western.
That would be one Fuck Off Party! XD
CRUSHH!! lols, seriously Gary mutton dressed as lamb, much?? xx
His hair, facial hair and glasses reminds me of Johnny Depp for some reason
Get everyone...
"Everyone?"
EVERRRRRYOOOOOOOOOOOOONE!!!!
Oh and i love Zorg :D
Matthew 5:44 KJV
But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;
Like you in the new Batman series with heather ledger if I remember correctly ❤
EEEEVEEERYYYYYOOOOONE!
...loves him❤
The Beatles shirt says it all ...:)
@pro707 it was on Stern a while back!
Gary Oldman's Hair is just AMAZING.... I see young guys in there 20's who are bald...Its sad =((
he is now the voice of Resnov again in black ops! :)
Mr. Oldman hasn't won any Oscars yet?
Nicht bis 2018
nice :) . Odd that she never asked veterans for advice on that (although definitely learning from all the co-stars over the years & maturing) Since she has a very different story for getting into acting. Most people want to be famous or at least want to be an accomplished & well known actor. Her parents enrolled her so she could have fun with other kids at the time at age 9 & it all happened by accident & luck (hard work too of course) Parents raised her well to stay grounded. Actors need to be.
scary gary . lol :P
@Thebestever441 I think you can. When a person, for example, is growing and living in the same region his accent forms affected by the surrounding people. I think it's the same when a person lives for many years in other country, his accent also can be influenced.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, GARY!
I wish you all the best! And I hope there is one fuck off party on this special day, too :-D
Gilbert Gottfried and Howard Stern brought me here.
