- Denzel Washington has stepped it up for his role in The Book of Eli. The Oscar-winning actor trained hard for six months to drop 50 pounds, learn martial arts and how to realistically handle many types of deadly weapons. Son of a pastor, Washington was so drawn to the spiritual aspects of the story, he also signed on as a producer.
The Book of Eli centers on a lone hero named Eli (Washington) who must fight his way across the wasteland of post apocalyptic America to protect a sacred book that might hold the key to saving the future of humanity.
Tribute's Bonnie Laufer had the opportunity to talk to Washington about his devotion to this movie and what it was like preparing for the role. Be sure to watch until the very end when Bonnie makes him blush when they discuss a specific piece of Denzel's wardrobe that he chose not to wear to get him into the role!

This was the last film my mom and I went to see. She was a Denzel Washington fan, me too. She passed away in June 2010, 3 days before my birthday. Watching this movie , on my own now, all these years layter. I see why she supported any movie mr Washington did.

I think the movie also intends to depict the brutality and immorality that defined the world before Christianity spread God's word. The Bible birthed a revolutionary worldview that became the foundational principle of Western Civilization: every individual human being has infinite (God-given) worth and value that must be respected by others. Nazis, communists, and other leftists/socialists reject that principle in favor of collectivism, which is why they're so hostile to Christianity.
If you haven't yet, watch the deleted ending. They should've chose that way to end show.

Kelley Good fight for what? At the end, after his walking year after year, dictating the Bible only to have it shelved with a collection of other religious books makes his journey a mockery. Was he delusional that God guided him? If all the holy books were equally valid (which is impossible) what was the point of even transcribing it. Was the Bible of no more value than any other beautifully written book?
Rewatch the end one copy is shelved and many more are made through a printing press and redistributed to the masses. He fought to have it put back out there so others could read it. Hope this helps clear up the confusion. God bless!
twigmanizhear ... to add to your comment if I may; Oldman’s character was on a like mission, but to do the opposite, to prevent the Bible from again, reaching the masses, which he knew would give the human race renewed hope, faith and encouragement. Tremendous storyline.
@@BeckVMH i personally interpreted the villain wanted the last bible not to destroy it but to read and preach it but in a way as such to give himself immense power and followers, more like a cult

This is not just a movie about religion it is a movie about devotion and having some form of faith and putting your heart into something.
I'll watch a movie just because Denzel Washington is in it. Thing is, I don't typically watch a lot of movies. They normally can't hold my attention. But I'll watch Denzel.

What a great guy and man of faith.
This is one of my favorite films. His performance was intense. You could see that he was invested in his character.
It's my all time favorite film he did. It's a perfect film. Every second of the film is needed and perfect. Beautiful powerful film about faith and believing. Being guided by God. On a long hard journey. Eli walked over thirty years blind. All because God wanted and needed him too.

It's one of those films you can watch over and over and still catch stuff you missed the last time.
I am NOT religious at all and think most people just use it to sweep things under a rug, but this movie ranks high on my personal list and even like the religious aspects of it. Was great.

Denzel Washington is in such seminal and iconic flicks...Training Day being one of his best!! Others for me are Carbon Copy, Mighty Quinn, Devil in a Blue Dress, Crimson Tide, He Got Game, Glory, and of course, Malcom X. Many others too...he's one of the greats!
