The Book of Eli is a 2010 American post-apocalyptic neo-Western[2][3] action film directed by the Hughes Brothers, written by Gary Whitta, and starring Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman, Mila Kunis, Ray Stevenson, and Jennifer Beals. The story revolves around Eli, a nomad in a post-apocalyptic world who seeks to deliver his copy of a mysterious book to a safe location on the West Coast of the United States. Filming began in February 2009 and took place in New Mexico. The Book of Eli was released theatrically in the United States on January 15, 2010, by Warner Bros. Pictures. It received mixed reviews from critics, but earned $157.1 million in the worldwide box office on a budget of $80 million.
Thirty years after a nuclear holocaust caused an ecocide, Eli travels on foot across the wasteland of the former United States. Wearing sunglasses and ragged clothes, he demonstrates uncanny survival and fighting skills. Searching for water, he arrives in a ramshackle town ruled by a warlord named Carnegie, who seeks to control the people through the power of a certain book, which his henchmen have been unable to find.
Eli barters with a store owner, the Engineer, to recharge the battery of his portable music player. At the town bar, he is attacked by a gang of bikers but swiftly kills them all. Impressed, Carnegie invites Eli to join his employ, but Eli declines. Realizing Eli is a literate man like himself, Carnegie forces him to stay the night under guard. Carnegie's blind mistress Claudia brings Eli food and water and Carnegie orders her daughter Solara to seduce Eli, but he rebuffs her. Solara sees Eli has a book, and he offers to share his food, saying grace before they eat. In the morning, Carnegie overhears Solara repeating the prayer to her mother and realizes Eli has the book he has been seeking: a Bible.
Eli sneaks away, but Carnegie and his henchmen confront him in the street. When Eli refuses to give up the book, Carnegie orders him killed; the ensuing battle leaves Eli untouched, but many henchmen dead and Carnegie shot in the leg. Solara catches up to Eli and leads him to the town's water supply, hoping to accompany him, but he traps her inside and continues alone. Solara escapes and is ambushed by two bandits who attempt to rape her, but Eli reappears and kills them. Continuing toward the West Coast, Eli explains his mission: his is the last remaining copy of the Bible since all other copies were intentionally destroyed following the nuclear war. He says that he was led to the book by a voice in his head, directing him to travel westward to a place it would be safe, and assuring that he would be protected and guided on his journey.

The most shocking plot twist of this movie is Eli has not the book, but Eli is the book.
Do you know why it got panned by critics? Because of the Christian theme. Hollywood dislikes religious movies. They are mostly atheists there. That Malcolm McDowell was in it should have given you a clue. He only appears in Christian-themed movies.

Halloween, Clockwork Orange(as the protagonist), Easy A, and Tank Girl to name a few.... not really religious movies by a Longshot, all with McDowell, so not sure where you got that idea
Really cause 2 years earlier he did the voice of president eden in fallout 3 and that's not very Christian neither is tank girl clockwork orange or many of the movies he has been in
Gary is , without a doubt , the best unhinged character to ever grace the screen . While we got the , gotta say scary af Denzel playing thee most bad ass mo fo , to grace the screen . Great movie , we do not , need a second one 😊

If a sequel to (THE BOOK OF ELI) movie, could get made someday; I theorize the storyline concept, being all about Eli’s friend SOLARA, and I imagine her being his successor.
I imagine she made the decision, that she wants to try doing, the same things that Eli did, and try to help people.
In addition try to enlighten some people, and try her best to keep her new found strength in GOD.
Part 2 should actually show us what happened before this one
@kabelosmallflow1891 Agreed. I actually had in mind a trilogy. In the video extras, there's a take on Oldman's character in his youth. In part 2, I'd go in depth with that and also Eli's character. He (eli) has a name badge from Kmart in the movie and I thought they could pick up on that, him working when the flash occurred and then everyone going underground. We'd also see Oldman's character and what happened with him as well. Back and forth between the two, Eli hearing from God, eventually training with some master along the way while Oldman becomes the evil guy, killing Solara's Dad without her knowing or Jessica Beal knowing and making her his slave. I had a pretty good plot for 2 actually.
I'm part 3, Solara returns to her mother after facing crazy people on the road. She trained with Eli before his death but she does catch damage. I hadn't finished the part where she actually gets back. Wanted to send something to the Hughes Brothers but I didn't think they'd have interest since the movie didn't perform well.
No sequel would justice to the story, how would it be written?
It was complete as it was, there is only way they could do a sequel is to continue from when the book was delivered to Alcatraz. Then what happens next from it.

He's not blind. He can read brail.
Exactly. He can clearly see throughout the movie. He runs and shoots with accuracy. No cane. No help walking. Running on his own. Hits targets with accuracy, etc.
Towards the end, the camera started focusing on his eyes as he recites the bible. He's blind.
They do a close up of his eyes there whitish he's blind
In my head canon he is blind but God gives him sight and once the task is complete he becomes blind again. Would explain not only the ending but how he acts in the film.

His blindness is cured well doing gods will, once his mission is complete it returns and he dies. He more or less tells her that he "was" blind.
