He was a detective and he was arriving to work as a loss prevention detective who works for the store. He was notified by another employee so he was waiting for him to intercept. Incidentally he didn't commit a crime yet not until he leaves the second set of doors the officer knew that and grabbed it before he had a whole ton of paperwork.
