- Quick update on the retaining wall section at the east end of the station. I think the Egyptian Pyramids were constructed quicker, but then again there was more than one man working on it in his spare time! lol

Dave, These videos on retaining walls are brilliantly useful. The catalogue of videos you have up are so useful now I’m building my own layout after watching your efforts over the last six years. Inspiring stuff, thank you so much for all your videos and hard work they are greatly appreciated. Good Job!
tommartin5 great. Thanks. So glad you’re enjoying my videos. Thanks for your support. Cheers. Dave
Dave...amazing doesn't come anywhere near your skills and patience when planning and constructing your magnificent layout, and I wouldn't have the audacity to make suggestions to someone of your skill level....Can't wait for the next update...Regards....Bob
The time and care and thought you put into your layout Dave is amazing and shows in the quality of the finished layout and is a pleasure to watch and I have enjoyed everything you have done added to the fact we like the same era and locos HST 91's and the 80's 90 generation of rolling stock and DE LOCOS' best wishes I look forward to your films every month .
Hi Graham, kind of you to say you look forward to my videos. I put a lot of thought into the layout....sometimes too much thought lol. Cheers. Dave
the longer it takes us to do something, the more we think, the more we think the more it changes, the more it changes the more we think, the more we think the more it changes, lol, you get it, always nice to think it out, better to take ones time to do it, but at some point we all have to jump forward, super layout update, looking good so far, just keep plugging forward and a wee bit different it will be, thanks for the update,
Hi, I know what you're saying...I think lol. Yeah by the next update more progress will be on show. Dave
Splendid as ever I can never tire of the chance to see your continuing efforts keep it up and keep the video coming
hi, thanks for your kind words. I love posting videos and sharing my work. Dave
Thanks for sharing always a good watch
Well, I always like these videos. :) That whole area is rather exciting I think. What you are going for, though painstaking, will be well worth it. A real interesting part of the layout. Love when trains go down and disappear for a bit etc. :D
Cheers Craig....I will keep plodding on. It really is painstaking and I am at times getting fed up, but positive feedback like yours really drives me on. Cheers. Dave
Hi there again I have just been watching the film about the track cleaner what a great gadget you could put that to a fright train It does the job .Well done
Hi Dave
Brilliant video as always and your efforts are inspirational to us all.
Parkway has slowed at the moment due to a lot of resprays I have been doing (The 2 Royal Scotsman 66s, Golden Ochre D5579, a Heljan 58 into TTG Coal sector, 37209 in Large Logo and have just started re-spraying 3 Arriva Mark 3s I got cheap into GNER to make up a full rake!!)
I will post some photos on Parkway soon and my friend Roy has posted a video of my new VTEC PCs with a full 9 coach rake.
Keep up the great work Dave and the Hornby Magazine article was superb.
John
Hi, thanks for that comment, and I am really glad you enjoyed Hornby article. I look forward to seeing your progress and re-sprays. Dave
brill video layout looking orsome as from the brick work i like the second one looking forward to next video
Awesome , divi
cheers. Thanks for the feedback too. Dave
Another super update Dave, the brick work looks better with the mortar, don't forget the curse of the railways Buddleia bushes growing through the brick/stone work! Have scene a lot of Japanese Knotweed on the East Lancs, Lakeside & Haverthwaite railways and on the Main line as well lately
had a buddleia in my garden once....it grew vey quickly! Dave
Another quality update Dave.
I know what you mean by getting fed up, a loft layout is a huge undertaking. I should be a lot further forward with mine but I struggle to find the energy at times.
keep up the good work mate.
we all have to juggle our other commitments in life...so after a long day at work sometimes I haven't the energy to go up the loft! but I do try as often as I can. Cheers. Dave
Loving the progress dave
Nice looking layout Thanks for sharing .
Just go with your heart Dave with those retaining walls and you never know it might turn out better than the other walls around the station
Cheers. Yes I think I am almost settled on the design of them now. Dave
Hi Dave, that colour on the brickwork is very good on the practice piece, even without the weathering it looks effective !
Andy
Cheers Andy, yeah I was surprised at how good it looked....the floresant tube lights can distort the colour somewhat, so I have to paint it with that in mind. Dave
Dave you are doing a great job there mate a very enjoyable update
Cheers Jack, appreciate you getting in touch. Dave
looking good as always Dave
Three suggestions for your brickwork walls.
1: Make sure to put the vertical butress *over* the joins of your plasticard sheets..... there's nothing more unrealistic than an obvious vertical line.
2: Consider where trackworkers would shelter if a train came along. Tunnels and embankment walls have recessed arches cut into them, or floor space to stand away from passing trains.
Imagine you have the wall, an UP line, and a DOWN line in that order [away from the wall].
Inagine the disaster waiting to happen if some trackworkers are working on the DOWN line and a train is passing on the down line, and then imagine the alarm being called to alert the trackworkers to vacate the track for a train coming on the UP line at the same time..... where are your trackworkers going to go?
Just make sure there is space so they have space to move to, rather than lying on the floor in the 6ft so they don't get splatted!
3: When you've done the structural work and the painting, put a spot of foliage poking out of the bricks here and there.
Weeds and moss are very common where water has drained through the brick and down the sides of walls.
www.flickr.com/photos/steam60163/5692188971/
It's also comming to find vines cascading over the abutment wall and down the side like a waterfall.
www.flickr.com/photos/papercliponawire/14814941359/
Also, there's plenty of foliage at the base of walls, which is great for hiding horizontal joins in the scenery.
Lay a think layer of ballast right up to the wall, and then add weeds.

Sometimes you can get some serious growth..... check out this pic, for the greenery on the left, and so much growth on the bridge supports in the background, they're practically *trees*!!!

Thanks for your thorough suggestions. I have designed the joins to be directly under a buttress. There will be no joins visible. Dave
Nice update. Good ideas with that curve in terms of forming the radius. Will bear that in mind ! Looking forward to seeing what Santa brings for you this year! The pleasure is the journey not arriving so slow progress is good progress (don't agree with the Forth Bridge comment). Thanks
Very good as allways
great video good tips keep it up looking forward to the next installment have a great christmas dave c nz
Great update I was wonder how to put a curved wall in as I might have to do it on my layout if I ever get that far lol so found this very useful cheers mate.
hi, glad you found a nugget of useful info in what I did lol. It takes ages, but I need it to be removable, hence the curved frame to hold the curve. Dave
Hi Dave
You have the patience of a saint, but the end result is extremely good. The wall colour looks fine. You might consider picking out a few individual bricks in slightly different colours. An odd one here and the could even be a blue engineering brick. As always your videos never fail to inspire. You even have a hopper wagon named after me. Nice touch.
Barry
lol, yes I have 23 hoppers named just after you. Thanks for the feedback. Yeah I will be picking odd bricks out as well as weathering it in places. Dave
You're doing a fine job on the brickwork Dave. Once weathered and a few weeds growing along the base it will fit in well with the rest of your fantastic layout. I agree with Peter Shaw, a few trains running to finish the video would be most welcome but trains running during your narrative would be distracting. A great update thank you. Merry Christmas from Canada. David.
Hi David, I take your points on board and agree. I will have a "Christmas running session" on the way very near Christmas day itself. Be sure to watch out for that. Merry Christmas. Dave
Very nice ply work, like the thinking looks great The brick looks good as well, the mortar affect looks quite realistic I'm sure you'll weather it to your standards, which are very high. Cheers from across the pond.
Hi, thanks for your feedback, very helpful. Cheers. Dave
Looking good Dave! I like what you've achieved with the plastikard!
Cheers Joe! It's taking a fair bit of time to get anywhere but the plasticard is good. Dave
DaveClass47 I think the real art of this hobby is to take your time with it all. it'll be worth it in the end I'm sure!
Joe Jabczynski I bloody hope so lol. Its all in my head, I know what I want it to be like, it will just take time! But I know I will get there some how.
i love your model railway :)
thanks ;-) really nice of you to say so. Dave
What paint have you used beside track (grey) , looks brilliant , love brick work and back photo
Brick colours looks good, once weathered and with buttresses should break up the wall so it doesn't look too samey. Keep up the good videos, always good for ideas. Cheers
cheers, appreciate your feedback on the brick. Dave
I like your choice of brick. Thanks to you I might use Scalescenes as well on my layout. Looking at the random ashlar pattern. Trying to decide how to build the wall along a riser that changes height quickly. Do I stagger it or follow the slope? Great video and keep up the fine work. -Mark
Both would work well. I have used both, but the slope I had was gentle. If its a big change in height I may stagger it? Its all about what looks right at that area of the layout. Good luck! Dave
hi Dave. Another very informative video. Thanks. I was wondering how you keep the tracks clean in long tunnel sections? This will be a problem for me when I track lay as my layout is in an outside shed and even nickel silver rail takes on a burnish after a while. Cheers, Angus.
I have a CMX track cleaner which is hauled behind a loco. It uses a track cleaning fluid and cleans the tracks. They are £100 but worth every penny! DCC Supplies was the company who I got mine from. Highly recommended item. Hope this helps. Dave
nice update yes it takes time but in the end its worth it grate update as allways, but do you think you could send your hoppers back to barry we bit shotrt of them here in southwales lol
keep up the good work always looking forward to your progress .
lol....they've travelled a long way north from Wales! Dave
Looking good. Can imagine its frustrating at times, but hey as you said in video 1....'No point in rushing'. Be nice to see the 153 sprinter in the next session.
ok, I might look that one out....if it still runs lol. Dave
DaveClass47 ha. If it doesn't work, just get one of the 47s to tow it back from the terminal to the maintenance shed. Have a good Christmas Dave. :)
Always enjoy your updates Dave but even a couple of minutes running session just to finnish off with please ........Peter
ok, I will try next time lol. Dave
hi,looks great can i just ask were you got the rear red flashing light on the hopper car from.
thanks jon
hi, that is a train-tech kit. Easy to build but fiddly to put on the hopper, still I like the affect it gives! Cheers. Dave
Very interesting up date Dave. A couple of thoughts...would the wall go, directly into the ground or would it have a strengthening layer in blue brick? The mortar looks very effective. Hope we get a Christmas Day update I can watch whilst eating my cheese sandwiches lol. Cheers, Bob
Bob, I am putting a ridge of brick as a strengthening layer along the bottom, but might keep it as red brick in this instance. Christmas Day update....I wish, my wife will have me downstairs peeling potatoes! lol I plan to upload a Christmas running session VERY near Christmas day. So watch out for that, cheese sandwiches at the ready!
Excellent video and your attention to detail is awesome. Just one question I’m looking to add a high level to my layout what height would you recommend I have it. I was thinking of 75mm
Hi 75mm is fine as a minimum. I have 95mm....the main reason for this is to give the tunnel structures I made clearance. Also for the OHLE masts. All depends what structures you want, ie bridges, tunnels, etc. Dave
DaveClass47 thanks
Fair point!
awesome video again can you please tell me where you got your brick plasticard from please ?
Hi, just Google south eastern finecast.....you get it at Antics online. Cheers. Dave
It's looking brilliant. From an engineers perspective on the brick bridge what is holding up the courses of brick over the span? As there is no arch where gravity and the curved forces would hold It al together the base of thAt unsupported brick span looks very sketchy from and engineering standpoint. :)
from a modellers stand point I had no other option for this as the track goes in at an angle and the space is tight. There is a grey part under the brick...this is reinforced concrete! That's what is holding it up ;-) See the finished article in later videos. cheers
Nice update .... are you using daylight S.A.D lights in your loft ?? they are not very expensive but give you much better colour than normal tube lights ...
never heard of them, but will take a look! ;-) Cheers. Dave
Nice work on the curved wall Dave. I take it it will just sit under it's own weight and you can removed it as and when you need? If you decide to stick to brick coloured brick, if you get my meaning, I find burnt sienna gives a good red/brown colour. If you have other colours on your palette you can build in quite a bit of variation in the colour as you go along so you don't have to tediously pick out so many individual bricks. Then, by the time you weather, wash, etc it looks very realistic. It's coming on great.
Hi Davie, yes it can sit under its own weight....incase I have to get in to repair the signal sensors etc. I think the brick work has come out well...it looks 100 times better once the mortar etc is added on top of the humbrol 70. Its going slowly (slower than I had hoped) but I want to get it right first time. Cheers. Dave
I know it's far from complete, but 72 scale metres of wall (that works the way you want it to) in one fell swoop is no mean feat. And you're right, the mortar makes the world of difference. I have used that plasticard and they knew what they were doing when they designed/made it. Plain painted it doesn't look like much, but once you paint/wash the mortar courses it comes alive. Cheers.
Really inspirational David! You'll have to have an open day one day, I'll bring cake! :D
bring a £1000 too....to help me finish this part of the layout lol. Dave
DaveClass47 and the rest haha
***** You're telling me! I would cry if I knew what I had spent on this passion of mine so far!
Hi Dave, interesting about the plasticard not good at being curved from straight, but added when the forma is curved. I may have a small bit on mine to curve. Always interesting to see how you do it. Peter is right, a few minutes running would be good.Barry. Devon.
cheers Barry.
great progress on your layout just one thing like to say post that installed for the over head on the bridge post is directly above the track below needs to move just before of after the bridge hope you understand what am talking about
thnks alan
I see, will try, but they are spaced out at the correct distance and the point work gets in the way ;-( Cheers. Dave
possible to scratch build a post and its on the other side of the track and will have the wire for both running lines cheers alan
enjoy your updates Dave just wanted to no have you had any problems with your track were it go's under your scenic aeras with locos stopping because of dirty track.
Hi....not yet. I used the CMX track cleaner wagon, which is filled with cleaner fluid (track magic) and hauled around the layout once every few times I have locos running. It keeps the tracks clean and the fluid also cleans the wheels of the locos as they go around too. Go to DCC Supplies to look at the CMX. They aint cheap at around £100, but they save a lot of hassle. I also still use the good old PECO track rubber on the layout as well. Dave
Dae.....great fabrication, should look great when done...cheers...steve
Curves and angles seem to double the work load for some reason. Its going to look good when done. A colour I like for brick is Tamiya Red Hull.
Scott
hi, thanks for that paint info. There are too many choices....that's part of the problem, I cant decide lol. Curves are the bane of my life lol...thank goodness I wont be putting too many curved walls on the layout, but this end of the layout is taking a lot of time to plan and build thanks to the bloody curves of the area. Dave
dean park realistic fascinating wonderful views
Hammer to crack a walnut springs to mind , still each to their own , nice layout though
Hi, what do you mean? I have to ensure that the curve is removable, so that I can access the wiring for the signal and signal sensor, that's why I have gone to so much effort on the curve section. Cheers, Dave
fair enough , i appologise
david beckett no don't worry about it. ;-) I should have explained it clearer...I will in my next update. I can be guilty of going over board with my builds, but in this case I had to.
Why did you disable the likes?
you can still like or dislike. But I was bothered by arsehole trolls who were just disliking it for the fun of it, so by taking away the tall of likes/dislikes they cant see the fruits of their antics.
Ok, good on you. Nice layout you have by the way.
The Forth Rail Bridge was designed and built quicker!
Yes, but if I do it correctly it wont need continual painting and maintenance.
I love the layout and all your plans, but will you stop repeating yourself all the time? If ever you hear yourself saying 'as I've said', then edit it out, don't say it again. And constantly asking for feedback and comments - once a video is more than enough.
Hi. I am really glad you like the layout. However I would like, if I may, to address to the rest of your comment. I genuinely regret my videos are not meeting your expectations, but I am sure you'll appreciate I am not a professional presenter. It be better if I wrote a script and rehearsed it for a few days before making the video, but I have a life outside of youtube videos which is rather busy. I do this hobby as and when my time permits and I film each of the video clips over a few days, sometimes weeks. Therefore I admit that I repeat myself on occasions. Its an honest mistake and not done deliberately to annoy anyone. I am doing these videos for railway modellers who just want to see what I am doing, they are not looking to hear a polished BBC presenter talking to them. lol 'As I've said', I am not a professional. I am just a amateur modeller sharing his ideas and my 9000+ followers who seem to appreciate me taking the time to film what I do and on the whole they find most of the videos useful and above all enjoyable. Thanks for taking the time to get in touch. I hope you continue to watch my videos and if you are a modeller yourself I look forward to seeing your layout grow with videos of your own? Its a wonderful hobby and its great that youtube is here to allow us all to throw our ideas out there. Warmest regards.
Thanks for the response. I didn't intend to offend, it was just a suggestion for making the videos slicker. I definitely intend to keep watching. In fact, I'm rather hoping that you'll publish the entire track layout when it's finished, as I want to recreate it on the computer in Trainz.
Hi. No fence taken. I like all comments, if you enjoy the good ones you have to be prepared for the ones offering critical view points. One day I will work out how to transfer my part draw layout from the computer so that it shows up in a decent resolution on youtube!
Hi Dave I was just wondering where you get the (brick plastic card) from cheers .
hi, these are from South eastern fine cast. Ebay or from Peter Spares. Hope that helps. Dave
DaveClass47 thanks very much
