  • Several folks have been asking me the best way to keep my tracks clean, especially under sections that it is difficult to reach with the humble track rubber. I cover the CMX track cleaner in this video.

    Hello Dave, it's taken 4 years but now I have purchased a CMX track cleaner and despite its cost it's the best investment I've made and the only cleaner that does a thorough job, I've got a 00 gauge garden railway with about 260 feet of running line, my knees aren't up to getting down to manually clean track and this CMX has the cleaning force of a track rubber without the damage they cause to the tracks, don't be put off by the price as you will not find anything better, believe me I've tried them all, thank you Dave for your detailed demonstration.

    Hi Dave. Thanks very much for showing us your CMX cleaner in action. I also use a PECO track rubber and find it ideal for removing tarnish, however a friend who is a member of the local model railway society tells me they have banned them for use on club layouts as they can leave small metal deposits that can be attracted onto locos or any magnetic train part and therefore contribute to fouling of the loco motor. (The trick would seem to be to use a small "dustbuster" vacuum cleaner and quickly go over the track immediately afterwards.) The club uses clean cloths and methylated spirits to clean their track only now.
    I have also used Goo Gone (bought online as I can't find it here in Western Australia) and can attest, it is very good at removing oily grime that has built up.
    Nice running session to follow - great.
    Cheers and happy Christmas, Angus

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  Před 7 lety

      Hi Angus, yeah would just seem sensible to run a vacuum over the track periodically to remove the bits from the track rubber"! I try to give the tracks a good vacuum every 1-2 months - without hoovering up all of the track side scenics!! lol Dave

    Hi Dave,great video,and a great track cleaning car.I run n Gauge Japanese trains myself but appreciate all aspects and scales.i bought a tomix track cleaning car last year,works great as a hoover but the cleaning aspect of it is not as good,it does nt like inclines or points,it just snags or uncouples itself,so one of these is on the cards I think.
    I also use both the products you do,goo gone and track magic,however I ve found a product on eBay,it s an alchohol based cleaner called Isopropanol,it smells just like track magic but is a fraction of the price.its worked ok for me tho I have only done it once so far.Just thought I d let you know.
    Keep up the good work mate,spot on layout!

  • @rogerking7258
    @rogerking7258 Před 5 lety

    My God this wagon's expensive - but beautifully made. Mine came with Kadee couplings only. The easiest solution I found was to tow it with a NEM coupling pocket equipped loco because you can get Kadees to fit NEM pockets. It only takes a minute to temporarily fit a Kadee to the loco and you're off. I have to double head mine because it is used on the grandchildren's train set which has uncoupling ramps and other bits that stand slightly proud of the rails; these cause enormous drag when the wagon goes over them. Far and away the best (and cheapest) solvent to use is automotive brake cleaner. It leaves no residue at all and I bought ten litres for £12 from my local auto factor. I've found it best to do an initial clean and then fit a clean pad for the final runs.

    I use mine with IPA and noticed once it has evaporated from the track and a few days later the track tops can look a bit mottled, why is this? Also, I see you have Googone, that seems like an oil to me? When using Googone do you fill the whole tank up with it? One moe thing, where can I get a tension lock coupling for it, mine only came with Kadee type couplings? Cheers, Andy.

  • @dashaB-sl4pu
    @dashaB-sl4pu Před 3 lety

    I'm in Australia and ordered one from the US, they are a very expensive bit of a kit and find it derails all the time, I don't have a wheel gauge yet but has anyone checked the distance between the wheels,and here I buy a 5 litre bottle of INOX which costs about $80 AU and it is absolutely brilliant cleaning the rails and wheels and we have a lot of trouble getting the replacement fabric here and it's very expensive as it's in US dollars, so today I went to a fabric shop and bought some aotomotive fabric and it's 1 square metre which I'm cutting into strips and it cost $18 AU and it works a treat, so it's becoming much more viable, but the derailing factor is a major pain in the bum but this might help other users

  • @44662dc
    @44662dc Před 7 lety

    Hi Dave yes I too like the CMX though I have tried various cleaning fluids Googon doesn't do it for me as I find it still leaves oil deposits. I find Track Magic pretty good. I recently bought myself a HST but hate the Hornby couplers big gaps and all. Fortunately I still had some original Airfix mini couplers that are push fit. The gap is now certainly reduced shame Hornby couldn't produce a NEM pocket though Denis

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  Před 7 lety

      Hi, I think the problem with the nem and narrow close coupling is that if you are 'pushing' the HST, ie the power car at the rear, the narrow nem seem to tangle and cause issues on curves. The wider tension lock couplings buffer together better and allow trains to run well while being pushed. This is perhaps why Hornby has stuck with this form of coupling?? Just my take on it! lol. Track magic is superior to Goo Gone in my opinion. Cheers. Dave

  • @HungryGuyStories
    @HungryGuyStories Před 6 lety

    It's funny that you're changing the Kadee couplers to Tension Lock couplers. I've bought a few British trains (I ensure they come with NEM connectors before I order any British train) and I change the Tension Lock couplers to Kadee.

    • @DeanPark

    • @HungryGuyStories
      @HungryGuyStories Před 6 lety

      I understand. If you live in the UK, you're better off using Tension Lock since that seems to be the standard everyone uses there on your side of the pond. But in the US, almost everyone uses Kadee here. I just wish NEM pockets were a thing over here on our side of the pond.

Does not help I am 70% deaf :). Question - do you use the Goo Gone neat or diluted and why do you not recommend the IPA? , with regards to the Track Majic I watched several Vids where people say in very cold weather the Track Magic causes whel slip. What are your thoughts on this also please.

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  Před rokem +1

      IPA…it is used to remove details from models, that’s why I avoid it.
      Goon gone neat is fine. But I prefer track magic. It doesn’t cause any issues, when dry. Goon gone will need to evaporate as well to stop track work from being slippy.

My layout is BR Southern region 1950 -1964. The track is all Peco Code 100 and I've fitted third rail around the whole layout with the exception of the steam shed. I have been looking for a good track cleaner and I came across your Video 99. I am writing this to ask you whether you think the CMX track cleaner would work on a third rail system? Your opinion would be appreciated. Many thanks Phil Kirk.

    Off topic - but I just can't help myself...
    I am totally baffled as to why, with all the attention to detail that train hobbyists undertake in making their layouts look realistic, why they omit the covered gangways between each passenger cars. We *never* see this (today) in reality. Even E/DMU's (...unlike in the past) have rubber concertina-like gangway covers between each carriage.
    .
    So why do keen train hobbyists leave out this somewhat obvious and simple, yet realistic detail? Surely someone could run out some black slicone-moulded covers and stick them to each end of their passenger stock carriages?
    .
    So for me, all model train layouts look unrealistic - inspite of how much effort is put into modelling the layout in general - because of those awfully obvious light-gaps between each passenger car.
    .
    How are the wee passengers expected to get their tea and sandwiches back from the buffet, without it all being blown away, as they negotiate each carriage gangway? Poor buggers!

    On topic - The CMX track cleaner wagon is pretty cool - but someone with a modellers/watchmakers lathe could easily copy the design - perhaps using a modified cigarette lighter or something (?)

    Forgive me for been stupid but why would I spend silly money on this, when you can get a second hand Triang cleaner, some new pads and a bottle of meths for less than £20 ?
