Excellent video Dave. I really like the way you not only show the layout as it progresses but tell the viewers how you achieved a certain stage and provide information (heights and thicknesses etc) and 'how to's' as well. Great stuff.

cheers David. Yeah I need the woodwork backing to prevent the MDF from warping, both with the glue and with the temperatures. I will seal all exposed wood with grey weather-seal primer to protect it as much as possible. Dave

Dave, great update as usual. One thing you may consider. Owing to the length of supporting wall on one side of the incline, with continuing train manoeuvres above, it may not be as supportive without some adequately spaced buttresses before filling all the gapes cut to make the wall sit vertical. Building site gets the nod from me, but as already suggested, the idea of having the static caravan as temporary home for whoever building the bungalow is a great idea.

May I ask for some advise please, I am having to install a AR1 auto reverser unit and unsure on how to wire it, for example does it connect to the track bus, are there droppers within the loop and if so, what do they connect to and how. As much help on this would be appreciated please.
I like the way you left the house & caravan in the corner, as David Houghton says it does look like the new build owners are living in a caravan, a bit of soil around the caravan rough drive would look good, after all too many modelers try to make every thing look neat & tidy
you've been busy Dave, the retaining walls look great and the bridges and tunnel mouths look even better, I like number 2 and the campsite option, I'd stick to just static caravans in a rows if you can hold of enough, but you could have some interesting little cameos with a small play ground etc etc Andy

Great update as always. Could build whats called a Caravan Club CL site which means 5 touring vans only allowed on the site - these tend to be farmer fields with tracks rather than a road into the site and not all CL sites have showers or toilet blocks etc, you could have 4 or 5 vans in field of grass with sheep etc - you could build a toilet block (posh CL site) and even some electrical points for vans to plug into Check CL site on the net if interested. That's looking really great Dave. One tiny suggestion about that central pillar. Where it's lined with the brick plasicard.... take a needle-file to the corners and try to blend the horizontal mortar course to stop it being an obvious vertical line.

DaveClass47 I have a different approach. When I do things like that, I carefully cut out the half bricks for one piece, and the same on the other piece, and then interlace them like real brickwork is. It takes longer, but it looks so much better, and there isn't that line that (to me) stares at me!
If I did this I would kill myself with frustration.....with over 3 metres of walling, dozens of buttresses/edges etc I simply dont have the time to do that.

Great video lots of work done there, coming on a treat. Good to see the old Lima Scot Rail BG still getting a walk on part. I might be wrong, but there doesn't seem to be enough room there for a caravan park or stately home. How about a small lake and some fishing going on. You often see that sort of thing near to railway lines. Just a thought. Hope your Mrs never decides she wants to move house.

Keen to get started...only so much fun to be hand running the locos in an oval on the kitchen table! We will have to agree to disagree on the political front; SturgeonRail sounds better to me than BrexiteerRail!

As for the politics...I keep that out of my layout scenery, ie no political billboards etc, But I do like the odd light hearted dig here and there on my videos. Love of railways unites people from around the world, which is one of the fantastic things about this hobby...but, the predicted exodus didn't happen in 1998 and Scotland's population has increased, so I think any initial rush south will only be to collect belongings, as folk move up here permanently in their droves to escape the madness unfolding down south! Anyhow. Keep up the cracking work with your layout. It's a belter! :-)👍
Looks great Dave, I would go with the caravan park as I think there would be much more over detail. I think as someone said on another of your videos the house would look like it was always being built even 4 years from now.
Wow your layout is coming along now that end is starting to take shape and yeah I was think leave both the building and the caravan and perhaps try do some sort of muddy area round the building to simulate a building site. I would also like to say your modelling skills are just amazing the retaining wall and tunnels/bridges are looking really realistic keep up the good and I hope I can be as good as you one day.

Hey Dave, have subscribed since your early videos and am enjoying your layout and attention to detail. Why not combine both of the options for the caravans and bungalow, it looked really good with them both together, perhaps a self build project with the caravan as the temporary home as the bungalows under construction. Guys working on the bungalow etc, caravan with washing lines, etc Look forward to the next video......😀😀
That is some amount of progress! I was sceptical that that huge length of brick retaining wall was going look too much, but you have proved me wrong. I know you have a good bit to go yet, but that whole side of the layout has come on in leaps and bounds. Also liking the mix of running and construction shots Dave. Whichever option, or even another that pops into your head, you go with for the corner will look good with the attention to detail you will inevitably give it. Regarding the earth tones over the plaster cloth. B&M (other suppliers are available!) do a good selection of artists acrylic paints at great prices. I have two huge tubes of dark earth and burnt umber which I mix to no particular recipe and you can get tones from brickwork to muddy puddle by adding one or the other.. Great update as always.
B&M....noted....will have a look next time I pass one. I will decide on which option to go with when I see if I can get a hold of more of those caravans! It might take a while lol. Dave
It's a toughie. The house is, quite literally, half built already and I suspect the hen's teeth caravans are not a cheap option! Oxford diecast do those old two tone caravans, but they also do a more modern, dare I say 80s, one. You are also right that the corner is not as big as it first seemed - I recall I suggested a village - one house isn't the dictionary definition of a village! Whatever you decide I expect it will look good. Keep up the good work. Cheers.
Hi Dave. I buy quite a lot of resin stuff from a guy on ebay (based in Prestwick) and he used to do a static caravan as part of his range. He doesn't have one listed just now, but I have emailed him to see if he still does them. He also does a set of OO scale tents! I'll get back in touch once I have a reply. Cheers, Davie
Hi Dave. Got an email back today. He (Stuart) still does them - they are £6.75 + £2.85 p+p, so a bit cheaper than the Bachmann vans. They are made to 1/72 scale and he has plans to make an HO-1/87 version in the future.His name on ebay is waylander.2012. Hope this is of some use to you. Cheers.
I am surprised even though the wrong era, you didn't go and buy the Scot-rail liveried class 68 to run on your layout.... the ones at the Scottish model railway show looked fantastic. and I am with the others the house building site and caravan seam a great idea. DaveClass47 I was going to suggest for that area the Kelpies which could have lights added for night running and I would love to see the 68 running with a great rake of Mk2's
As you have many HST's a depot/services facility for those trains only would make an interesting scene, Obviously not in the small corner mentioned in this video though. A HST servicing depot is something I have never seen modeled and a good example is Landore TMD in Swansea which services class 43's. It is also of a compact layout which would help modeling a similar style TMD. It would provide an excellent area to show off your impressive fleet of HST's! -Ash.
Excellent. That tunnel is going to look great on a cab view video. It's also a great way to do a tunnel if I'm right in assuming the top is always able to be lifted off?
another great video Dave as for the corner area how about a third option i.e. the house under construction with the family living on site in the static van, along with the contractors vans and delivery trucks it could look very busy and muddy if you like cheers

Another great video - thanks for sharing your progress. Just wondering though if you've done (or might be encouraged to do) a specific video session on train compositions - for example your passenger trains and how they copy the prototype, the era, and the individual coaches and scale manufacturers. I think this info would be very interesting, especially for many of us unfamiliar with the prototype.
Have you thought about using emulsion paint - test pots cost about £3. OR use left over emulsion paint change colour by mixing in acrylic colours. Add sand and PVA glue to give textured effect. you can add soil to make a realistic ground effect.

I was hoping to find a video on your channel on cutting your foam but I couldn't find anything. What products do you use?
Hi, I use CELOTEX insulation board. You get it from Wickes and other DIY places. I have the 50mm thick stuff. Its easy to cut and file, but you NEED to wear gloves as the fibres can get stuck in your fingers. All the model magazines say to use this stuff, that's where I got the idea from. It can be messy, so keep a vacuum handy as you work and cover the surrounding area with protective sheeting. You can glue it with Woodland scenic foam glue. Cheers. Dave

Hi I like the base layer of textured paint, then the woodland scenics earth just adds some variation to that. You could get off without it, but I like to use it to vary the depth and tones of the soil under the grass etc. Its really up to you. Cheers. Dave

Why not leave the caravan and the part built house together as shown at the very end of the video. This could show that the owners of the house are living in the caravan while the house is being built. Cheers DaveH

Hi Dave. Just a question, are you intending to have any bridges over the upper tracks as scenic breaks as you have on the lower tracks? I ask as it seems to me that a bridge from the new raised section over the lower tracks featured in this video across the upper tracks would help give a visual break at that point on the upper level. Love the work your doing. I have watched your updates from day 1 and to be honest I was expecting the quality I have seen so far. Why not combine both of the options for the caravans and bungalow, it looked really good with them both together, perhaps a self build project with the caravan as the temporary home as the bungalows under construction. Guys working on the bungalow etc, caravan with washing lines, etc

That is some amount of progress! I was sceptical that that huge length of brick retaining wall was going look too much, but you have proved me wrong. I know you have a good bit to go yet, but that whole side of the layout has come on in leaps and bounds. Also liking the mix of running and construction shots Dave. Whichever option, or even another that pops into your head, you go with for the corner will look good with the attention to detail you will inevitably give it.
Regarding the earth tones over the plaster cloth. B&M (other suppliers are available!) do a good selection of artists acrylic paints at great prices. I have two huge tubes of dark earth and burnt umber which I mix to no particular recipe and you can get tones from brickwork to muddy puddle by adding one or the other..

It's a toughie. The house is, quite literally, half built already and I suspect the hen's teeth caravans are not a cheap option! Oxford diecast do those old two tone caravans, but they also do a more modern, dare I say 80s, one. You are also right that the corner is not as big as it first seemed - I recall I suggested a village - one house isn't the dictionary definition of a village!

Hi Dave. I buy quite a lot of resin stuff from a guy on ebay (based in Prestwick) and he used to do a static caravan as part of his range. He doesn't have one listed just now, but I have emailed him to see if he still does them. He also does a set of OO scale tents! I'll get back in touch once I have a reply. Cheers, Davie

Hi Dave. Got an email back today. He (Stuart) still does them - they are £6.75 + £2.85 p+p, so a bit cheaper than the Bachmann vans. They are made to 1/72 scale and he has plans to make an HO-1/87 version in the future.His name on ebay is waylander.2012. Hope this is of some use to you. Cheers.
I am surprised even though the wrong era, you didn't go and buy the Scot-rail liveried class 68 to run on your layout.... the ones at the Scottish model railway show looked fantastic.

DaveClass47 I was going to suggest for that area the Kelpies which could have lights added for night running and I would love to see the 68 running with a great rake of Mk2's

As you have many HST's a depot/services facility for those trains only would make an interesting scene, Obviously not in the small corner mentioned in this video though. A HST servicing depot is something I have never seen modeled and a good example is Landore TMD in Swansea which services class 43's. It is also of a compact layout which would help modeling a similar style TMD. It would provide an excellent area to show off your impressive fleet of HST's!

Excellent. That tunnel is going to look great on a cab view video. It's also a great way to do a tunnel if I'm right in assuming the top is always able to be lifted off?

another great video Dave as for the corner area how about a third option i.e. the house under construction with the family living on site in the static van, along with the contractors vans and delivery trucks it could look very busy and muddy if you like cheers
I could send you my umbrella tent pattern if you like. If postage going your direction wasn't so steep, I could make a couple of folding aluminum chairs.

loving the layout. I personally prefer Option 1 of the Building Site.
Maybe the people having the house built could be living on site in the caravan or maybe it's a self build. combines the two nicely

Another great video - thanks for sharing your progress. Just wondering though if you've done (or might be encouraged to do) a specific video session on train compositions - for example your passenger trains and how they copy the prototype, the era, and the individual coaches and scale manufacturers. I think this info would be very interesting, especially for many of us unfamiliar with the prototype.

Have you thought about using emulsion paint - test pots cost about £3. OR use left over emulsion paint change colour by mixing in acrylic colours. Add sand and PVA glue to give textured effect. you can add soil to make a realistic ground effect.
I like the caravan idea, have a look at shedring railway on Facebook they do a really nice towing caravan

Hi Dave.. I've been wondering what style of foam you use for creating your landscape? I'm looking into Extruded Polystyrene (XPS) Board and using the Woodland Scenics wire foam cutter. I was hoping to find a video on your channel on cutting your foam but I couldn't find anything. What products do you use?
Hi, I use CELOTEX insulation board. You get it from Wickes and other DIY places. I have the 50mm thick stuff. Its easy to cut and file, but you NEED to wear gloves as the fibres can get stuck in your fingers. All the model magazines say to use this stuff, that's where I got the idea from. It can be messy, so keep a vacuum handy as you work and cover the surrounding area with protective sheeting. You can glue it with Woodland scenic foam glue. Cheers. Dave

The hill sides of the track. Have you thought about like they do at sides of motorways. Woth lots of rocks and a net that stops the rocks rollin down the embankment

Hi I like the base layer of textured paint, then the woodland scenics earth just adds some variation to that. You could get off without it, but I like to use it to vary the depth and tones of the soil under the grass etc. Its really up to you. Cheers. Dave

Can you please advise on where you had your station roof made, also, could you advise on the detail that was required. Combined with the glazed roof sizes etc.

Hi, 4mm plasticard blocks (2mm x 2 glue together). then painted. Glue to base board, drill hole if req for masts. Cheers. Dave

Why not leave the caravan and the part built house together as shown at the very end of the video. This could show that the owners of the house are living in the caravan while the house is being built.

Just a question, are you intending to have any bridges over the upper tracks as scenic breaks as you have on the lower tracks? I ask as it seems to me that a bridge from the new raised section over the lower tracks featured in this video across the upper tracks would help give a visual break at that point on the upper level.

Hi...at the town end of the layout there will be a cutting where the upper tracks go through, there will be a road bridge of some sort....come back in 2020 and I might have got around to it! lol Dave

Love the work your doing. I have watched your updates from day 1 and to be honest I was expecting the quality I have seen so far. I hope you keep it going as looking forward to seeing it finished but what will you do when it's finished lol. Also I like how you show the stages of updates in your videos and go into detail how you do stuff rather than show a video of all your progress in one.
