Dean Park Station Video 120 - May 2017 Update

  • This months update focusses on scenic work to the layout. I hope you enjoy, comment and please share my videos. In the summer months interest in model rail videos drops.....I am thinking about reducing the amount of uploads I do, as it takes a lot of time and effort to film and edit them. Save the videos for the winter!! ;-)
    THE ARROW ON THE SPEED SIGN HAS NOW BEEN CORRECTED.

      Hi Paul, I know they're appreciated by you an hundreds of others and I love doing them. It helps drive me forward to get stuff done for the layout. Summer is coming and time up the loft/sheds and basements for most modellers will be reduced with the heat and nicer weather outside. Time becomes an issue for doing hobby stuff. I will keep posting throughout the summer but maybe less often....roll on the autumn for more modelling lol. Cheers and thanks for your support of my channel. Dave

    All looking very good.
    Good plan with the Jigs.
    One small thing.... the wire on the fencing looks very shiny as if they are chrome plated, but with the oxidising of the steel would be a more matted silver, almost grey look.
    My suggestion is to paint it with a mix of silver and pale grey just to tone it down.
    Looking forward to next month!

      Thank you for replying Dave. There are certainly other pressures on ones time during the summer months and that is a valid reason to scale back. I find it hard myself to edit material and post it. CZcams is only a hobby or an extension of a hobby so feel free to take a break, you wont lose any fan base over it. In our hobby groups we meet Sept 'till June and then take the summer off. No reason you couldn't do something like that. All the best, David.

      Hi. Wow, thanks for your interest in the jigs. Ok, to make the fence post one will be £2.50. The large is a lot bigger.....I will have to buy more acrylic for the OHLE one and work out the price, if that's ok? are the masts you're using the same size as mine? in height and width of mast? and the space between both masts? Cheers. Dave

    @daviemaclean61 Před 7 lety

    Great progress Dave. It's not that long ago that end of the layout was more or less bare. And the little individual scenes and pieces transform it. Like the jig idea. I have some trolleybus masts to make and for all the time it would take to knock up a jig it's worth it to get them all the same.

  • @47606odin
    @47606odin Před 7 lety +1

    hi, great update. just a bit of info, the arrow on the speed board is not an indication of the line to which it applies, but indicates the diverging speed at a junction. in this case would be if you are turning right, then the speed is 70, whereas the main line speed over the junction is higher

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  Před 7 lety +1

      hi, I know....kind of a bit of artistic licence lol.....I have an arrow on the speed sign just prior to the turnout, but I am fitting another speed sign for the passing loop just before the 70 sign, so wanted to differentiate it a bit..... hope I get off with it. lol. Dave

  • @cedarcam
    @cedarcam Před 7 lety +1

    I am very impressed with your attention to detail on this update and the last showing your wall weathering. The old rail and sleepers ect. and the way they are blended into to scene. These features are very common on the real railway but not so often seen on model railways. As Matthew pointed out the track workers should also have a lookout man with them whose job is to warn the men of the danger of approaching trains. Workers engrossed in their activity may not notice they are standing too close to the track. He would carry a rolled up red flag for use in emergency. These are often left on the ground ready for use. I have not seen a figure of a man doing this job but have found a suitable figure to use and cut a guards flag from another set repainted red. Also as you have noted the arrow on the speed sign is not required. These signs are normally placed to the left side of the track they apply to 6 feet from the nearest rail So a driver on the passing loop would know that sign did not apply to the track he was on. Although you are thinking of cutting down on the uploads during the summer I think it would still be good to put on a short Say 5mins, film of something to do with the layout as I, like many, look for my monthly view.

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  Před 7 lety +1

      hi, agree about the sign, but ripping it off with take the paint off lol...I shall leave it for now. it looks ok, even though not required. A moment of 'forgetting reality' for me there lol. Dave

    Everything is great as usual but as someone has already mentioned the arrow on the speed sign is wrong - this indicates a right point/turnout that can be taken at 70mph which seems a bit quick. Normally seen with 25mph but perhaps higher is seen.

Then I can do the mid 1980's - 1990 with sectorisation 47's 58's, 56's, 50's 37's, HST's. Then I can do 1989-1994 with some sector freight, HST's large logo stuff, intercity swallow etc. Finally, I can do 2015-2017 with the East Coast livery Class 91, Virgin east coast HST and a Saltire class 68 with Deltics, A4 Pacific's and A3 Pacific on charters.. Hello Dave, First of all may i say how good this lay out is looking, I'm new to this hobby & to be honest i know nothing about trains, But what I'm good at is dioramas so I'm 50% there. before i forget please can i have a fence jig has this make things simpler. My set up will be early 1980's British rail so loads of research still to do before i even start to build my layout, But the other two things i have going is "1" i have 30 ft by 15 ft to play with & "2" i have loads of time so any idea would be great, I'll keep watching. cheers Dave.

    Hi Dave, Ive been away from the hobby for a long time but Ive started getting back into again. Im planning to build a layout in the loft of my garage and found your videos when researching layouts in roof with W trusses :)
    From your accent and the name of the station I think we live quite close to each other.
    Really impressed with what you have built and your training sessions, keep up the good work.
    One question, am I correct in thinking that you have removed one of your trusses at the ends of your layout to give you more than the normal 600mm ?? Have you had any problems doing that?
    Thanks
    Kev (Glenothes)

    • @DeanPark
      @DeanPark  Před 7 lety +1

      hi, thanks for that. Yes I removed one, but braced it above and below the baseboard....I consulted a structural engineer and joiner. with the addition of off of the beams that support the baseboard my trusses are now more rigid than before. I have had the layout for nearly 5 years. no issues with the trusses. fingers crossed lol. If you want photos of the bracing I can take some at some point and send them to you. If this would help if you are considering something similar? I'm in fife too ;-) Dave

    02:40 is there no lookout man? Do they even make one?
    Do u put old or new rails( to sho work to be done on ongoing weekend works what's to be Laid) in the running track and for the rails and fences if you add then after grassing makes them look like there new i.e. Just been laid and and as you have before looks like been there for ages. What about litter and fly tipping, Graffiti or linesides with broken windows .
    Haw about a cameo say slow line on one side is closed for planed engineering be it full closures(have engineering train parked on it have stop boards and lock the points.
    Could also do working whiles track is like so need look outs and other safety stuff for that working. I have not seen that on a layout.
    Have a man on a signal ladder, track side bridge inspection. In the period you are modelling you would be in the bridge guard British rail period where they checked bridges for safety(my mum had to check all the plans in york before setting teams out to check the bridges them selfs that was A 3 year contract for her)

  • @thelibrarian46
    @thelibrarian46 Před 4 lety

    I think the details in the scenery and the rail workers make it look excellent and very realistic. In the more urban area of the layout, are you going to have any graffiti on walls adjacent to the track? Do forgive me, as I am obviously writing this two yeas after this u tube clip. But I think this is a fantastic looking layout, and you have obviously worked very hard to create this level of detail.

    While following and admiring your quality of workmanship and detail for quite a while now I think in your latest video you have not got it right 12 minutes into the video you show a speed board with an arrow the arrow should not be there. If there was a set of points at the speed board then that would inform the driver the speed through the points. So in this case no arrow should be on the speed sign.
    Keep up the good work.
