I have a lot to get through in this video, so sit back, put your feet up and enjoy. - Věda a technologie
Hi David, As always your work is second to none, detail is nothing short of outstanding, loved the the showing of the products purchased why, where and how they are all to be used. Great Job.
Regards Allan
Always a good way to spend Sunday morning watching a Dean Park update whilst having breakfast. Happy Birthday Dave.
cheers Dave. Hope you enjoyed your breakfast viewing ;-) Dave
Jaw droppingly amazing Dave, I've been doing some work on my layout recently, then this comes along and the old green eyed monster appears once again. Phenomenal attention to detail and the results are absolutely outstanding Dave, and shows what can be achieved, if your a skilled and patient person.....all the attributes I do not posses..ha..ha....Best wishes...Bob
Cheers Bob....i'm really enjoying putting scenic stuff into this part of the layout. Its been a long winter of building track, walls, hills and ballasting....now onto the more relaxing stuff. Dave
Fantastic layout, really enjoy seeing the care and work that you put into your layout! Being in the US, I really enjoy seeing the British rail modeling! It's like I'm there on vacation! Well done!
Hello from across the pond. Really appreciate you watching my videos, its humbling to think there are fellow model rail enthusiasts so far from the UK that watch my stuff. I hope you continue to enjoy watching my progress and please share my videos. Thank you. Dave
I've been watching for a while, so many great ideas and tips. Keep up the fantastic work, I liked your comment about doing it right instead of fast! So true! I unfortunately didn't think of that first with my layout and am in the process of taking it down and changing it out. I follow quite a few of your fellow countrymen! It brings the world a little closer! Always Looking forward to your next episode! Thanks again for letting us into your world. Regards, Scott
Cheers Scott, all the best. Dave
Excellent update as always Dave
Thanks for sharing and im looking forward the next update.
cheers.
Hi Dave fabulous update once again 👍
Your hand made overhead catenary looks really well 😊
I'm sure you'll make wires one day so it'll look 👀 complete 🤔
Well done again Stevie 👍
I enjoy these HUGELY! What a work of art. Bravo!
Great video Dave, the work on the tunnel is excellent and I'm looking forward to seeing the caravan site finished.
Hi Dave, stumbled upon this after I asked the question on the first ever video about the canteray. If you're up to doing your own wiring for the masts, which add a lot of realism to the look of the layout, a really good technique I had to get super straight wire from a roll of tinned copper wire (I used 0.5mm), was to wrap the wire around a nail or screw on one of the roof masts at one end of the loft and then roll it out for as long as you can to the other end. Give it a pull to stretch it a little and you will end up with perfectly straight wire for make your catenary from. :)
hi, thanks for watching and welcome to my channel. Great tip....a very novel way to get the wiring fitted lol. I don't intend to do wiring at this stage, due to the issue of getting in to clean tracks etc. But I have not ruled it out n the future. ;-) Dave
Only you would spend that much time and effort on the inside of a tunnel. Great job as always. -Mark
haha....you're so right. its all the little things that I like to do....if I do a low camera angle it would show up, so I thought I'd better!! lol Dave
Wow. A treat for Railway lovers
Loving the obligatory "School Woodwork Toolbox" in shot, I made one of them in 2nd year in '89 😃
hi lol....out of a book called "Stem" I would image?!?...me too. lol. It has served me well. Made it in S2 in 1991! lol Although I think this one is a 're-make' of the original ones! Dave
Great update Dave it's all looking fantastic.
Great update Dave, I loved the panning scenes across the layout and the wider angle shots that show just how large and grand the layout is. Its looking absolutely wonderful, you are doing a marvellous job and I envy your attention to detail. Really nice to hear about the future plans, you certainly have a lot of developments on the go to keep you busy. I chuckled at your comments about the release timetable (or absence of one) for forth coming rolling stock. I have been waiting for Hornby to release their class 56 in railfreight red stripe livery for quite a while, orginally a 2016 release its now slipped back to August 2017! And still no word on a swallow liveried HST :(
hi, oh tell me about it...I am itching for another swallow HST release! lol. Dave
Most impressive Dave, I like the back scene behind the Station Building. As for the OHLE, I think what you have done so far looks convincing..
@13:20 Thankyou for this camera angle! My loft is pretty much the same layout as yours in terms of beams, I was going to do the same baseboard layout, but with legs.. that's such a great idea how you've done yours, I'll definitely be doing it the same way. Love your channel and all the helpful content you've provided too!
Hi, thanks for getting in touch. Glad my videos are helpful and have given you some ideas. A loft layout is good, but all those rafters are a pain to get in between at times. But we use what space we have! Cheers. Dave
Hi Dave nice update. It's nice to see its starting to take shape around the back end, cheers, James
Wow every time I see your layout it amazes me it's really coming together on that end of the layout that overhead looks awesome too keep up the good work.
Nice one Dave it's all the little bits that take time I am putting the wires up on my Tinsley layout at the moment nightmares me thinks lol but yes I do like how yours is growing cheers just now Dave Tinsley tmd and yard model
Love all your videos Dave! I love the longer ones even more!!!
It's coming together really great. I particularly like the OHLE - I'm no expert but I think it looks really convincing.
Just suggestion which I saw from RMWeb. Chap on there used a GWR style number plate reading 1904 or something on a building to represent a dated brick. I think something like that over your new brick tunnel would look good.
Happy modelling!
great layout dave it's all coming together nicely now
Great work on the weathering and tunnel roof Dave. Caravan park looking good. Liking the Class 85 rake and looking forward to the overheads video. Cheers James.
Looking good, taking your time is paying dividends. I really hope you continue clockwise around your layout I'm itching to see what you do with your TMD.
TMD is next....dont worry. Will hit that big time by the end of the year. It wont take as long as this end as all of the track is laid and there are not curves and inclines to navigate, no curved retaining walls....just lots of straight ones lol. Dave
Another fantastic update.
A most enjoyable watch. Rob
Good update. I'm steam so I dont have the electrification gantry nightmare that you do. There has got to be another and cheaper way of doing insulators, surely. Mascara application brush ??.
Barry. Devon.
Great update Dave. Enjoyable viewing as always. Keep up the good work :-)
Cheers, Bob
looking great now dave love the caravan site going look good and the curve incline looks amazing now also with the substation on the side that part going look really good when finished
Looking good. That is a lot for wiring. Thats is a lot of detail to add, Dave
The price of the overhead wire is crazy. All the small details make a layout. Looking good.
Great update Dave, love the tunnel roof, and caravan park. As to the overhead wire I'm sure you could come up with a better Idea yourself than spend £1200.Cheers John.
great update Dave, don't blame you with the over head wires I wouldn't spend that sort of money either its a stupid price for what it is Andy
Looking fabulous Dave. :-D
Great update Dave your catch pits are used in 2 places! Dead end bay platforms to catch diesel spillage or on fueling points to catch spills! The era you are modelling I'm not sure they were around! As for your wire head span masts they are usually mounted in a concrete base. I have done this on the Dapol masts using the single block pieces of lego drilling through top! That may well work perfectly for you & hold it well in position & extremely firmly! As a virgin driver if you need any pics of anything just ask & I'll see what I can do
Hi...Cheers for that Steve, good to get an insight from someone who knows. Yes, concrete bases are in the process of being 'designed'...more info on that as the OHLE is produced. That lego brick is a novel idea! Sounds effective too. I will keep you in mind if I have any other real world questions....you an Virgin east or west coast driver? Dave
West coast
Ah cool...you're a lucky guy. If you were ECML I would plead with you to let me in the cad of an HST lol. Dave
I really really miss them!! My all time favourite! I Facebook messaged you a Dapol mast with the lego block
I've been watching your Dean Park Station progressing from the first video for a couple of weeks, I haven't watched the rest from this one but it amazing how it shows the progress of the layout, I understand that you said that to wire the layout it would cost £800 to £1,200 each but I do agree that wiring the layout isn't a good idea, because your setting your layout around the 80s and from watching it I would think that the layout is also set during electrification progress of the route
Its looking good It will give me a good kick up the but to get on with mine.Well done I do enjoy watching your programs
As Rich Mottershaw has stated Dave, excellent update. like him i look forward to you updates. Are you going to model a couple of pylons for your substations? Do like your 3 track masts which you can adjust to the alignment of your tracks, as for your tunnel roof you must the patience of a saint when it comes too working the alignments.
Hi Vince....I spent many hours staring at the tunnel trying to work out how to do that I can tell you! lol....but finally the idea popped into my head and I was able to make it work. Not sure about pylons....as it is a substation to feed/boost the OHLE I might just have small masts...I will study photos and see what the options are. Really glad you look forward to my updates, they are the most popular videos I do, so its great to get some feedback. Dave
Love the tunnel. How about using fuse wire for the overhead. They come in large reels.By the way, the layout is excellent
the layout is looking great, you could goto b&q you may be able to find a fine enough wire to use there
Thanks for the update.
Just a quick remark on how to position the different types of overhead masts in curves. You wouldn't need to alter the long and short masts in curves, but the long masts on the inner and the short masts on the outer side of the curve. The "zig zag" results by having the straight wire above curved tracks....(the rest is just geometry)
Hi...I wanted to put the masts at either side, but didnt have the clearance from the embankment. Still works either way. cheers. Dave
Dave I would suggest the caravans should face the other way with the.back towards the fence and the toe eye the other end otherwise the would not be able to be manoeuvred into position
Hi...yes but they dont have a window at the other end, so they wouldn't see out over the rail landscape! I see what you mean, but looking at a caravan site near me they actually are positioned like mine, they must have been pushed into place!
Hi Dave, If you havent decided yet, on your over head wires , how about fishing line all sorts of colours sizes thickness.,and textures a lot cheaper. Keep up the good work. Phil
Hi Dave, Great update. Yeah get on with scratch building the cantenery as it saves you waiting, saves you money and to be honest, makes your layout more unique! Some of those products from scale model scenery look great, But I am nowhere near ready for those bits yet lol. Cheers
hi, cheers Michael. I am quite impressed with my OHLE building efforts so far lol. Dave
Clever way to make the tunnel roof. it's a nice touch.
great update! what about using fishing wire for the wires on your pantograph?
Dave have just got to the part about the wire for the overhead pantograph trains. I agree it is extortionate for all it is! Like you said you could probably DIY for a lot less and if you have time it would be a really interesting and challenging -But rewarding - project if you wished to tackle it. In the meantime could you not run a piece of black thread between some of the poles just to see how it looks on a small part of the layout?
Very impressive update Dave and really looking forward to watching you scratch build your OHLE in the future, not sure if it's any use or it's a bit west coast main line but there's an ebayer called torri_laser selling laser cut gantries in packs of 10 for £15, thanks for sharing , cheers Dazza
Nice work Dave. The tunnel roof trick is very cool, I shall give it a go at some point i'm sure. I was wondering when you would start making the catenary. For a first attemopt its looking good. Problem with OHLE is even if the right type is available its going to cost loads to install, much better doing it yourself. I hope to dive into the world of third rail which looks to be a similar minefield of details.. Cheers
Hi, yeah the OHLE from Peco cost far too much....ok for a small layout, but mine would just be cripplingly expensive. My scratch built stuff is quite cool....I need 12 masts for the initial installation and a further 4-5 at the tmd entrance. Not cheap to make, but cheaper than peco! If you use my tunnel idea give me a shout out on your channel! lol. Dave
Brilliant video. Your attention to detail is superb. I have three comments that you may wish to take on board (and please don't regard these as criticism in any way): 1. The OLE round the tight incline curve would probably all use the same mast type in reality as the curve itself will take care of the catenary sweep on the pantograph. 2. The substation is technically a Southern Region DC traction substation for 750V third rail. However, I guess model substations are not the easiest items to purchase in respect to variety. 3. The 'blue' catch pits are definitely a relatively new item of railway infrastructure and I'm sure your layout would pre-date them. Trivial I know but by just not painting them blue would solve that 'issue'. PS the modern blue grille in reality is some non-metalic polymer I believe.
I hope these comments are received as constructive as your layout and videos are second to none in detail and entertainment.
Superb!
Hi Dave,
I see you have rather a lot of cable trunking, is this all "Wills" or have you made it ? I have found it is out of scale, is there another make that is available to use ?
hi .
did not realise your layout was that large . .
can i ask what colour you used for the dirt areas
?
cheers in advance .
Hi Dave, a great loft layout. I tried but gave it up as it was too tight to work, so now I have a smaller layout in my garden cabin. Much smaller but easier to work with. How do you find all the time to work on this?
Hi, thanks. Time?....I have a very kind wife!! I find time where ever I can, at nights, the weekends etc. I don't do much in the summer, but I am up the loft a few nights a week if I can! Takes a lot of time and effort....the worst thing you can do is rush it! Cheers. Dave
Catch pits there's loads between york and Thirsk on all for lines they was laid last or year before
Would look better with the overhead wires but at £800-£1,000 I don’t blame you for not doing them.
Yeah, it’s a rip off! Plus in inhibits cleaning and Maintenance!
For the overhead wiring wouldn't B&Q sell something cheap enough in a reel that could get the job done that you could get away with using because over a grand for some wire is very expensive?
think youve made a good decision to not bother with the wires.....the masts by contrast give that OHLE look at a fraction.of the cost. ok on exhibition layouts but i would also spend my cash on other things and still enjoy my overhead electric locos......i think the new Peco lattice gantries should give a great appearance......an option for your mainlines as Dapol do not seem to have progressed their multi track headspan kits.
Hi Dave, long time lurker, first time commenting!
I'm not on the scene but do enjoy watching your videos. Something that continually strikes me is the expense of all these little items you can buy to add to a layout - VERY expensive!!
Anyway, something occurred to me - would it not be worth your while investing in a 3D printer? I'd imagine you could download designs to 3D print either free or for a fraction of the cost of buying the actual models. They'd require painting of course, but most of the models folk seem to buy are further painted anyway.
You'd maybe need to look at a mid/high end printer (I'm not sure, maybe not) given the intricacies of some models, but their cost is decreasing all the time.
Just a thought. David.
Hi, welcome to the comments! lol. Thanks for supporting my channel. Yes the little things add to the over all price of things....recent price hikes don't help either! I think in time most people will have 3d printers in the home.....maybe then I will be able to afford to buy one. My mate has one and to be honest the quality is 'ok'. but its not up to the standard of professional machines....yet! Cheers. Dave
hi Dave another great video im envious of your modeling ability if you are looking to wire the mast try jewelry wire i got silver coated brass 100m for about a fiver for fence wire it was .05mm from china
Ref to over head wiring ,just had an idea,( fishing Line ) .
Forgive me if I am wrong but I would think a class 91 would go quite well in the railway
oh it would go very well...that is the main reason I put up the OHLE, to run a class 91 east coast set. BUT Hornby's offering is so pants that I am still waiting for Hornby to re-tool it and give us a model fit for the 21st century. But I do have a Hornby class 91 (a few in fact) in numerous liveries that will run on this stretch until the new ones come out.....I will get it out of its box for when I electrify this section. I really like the 91! Dave
DaveClass47 have you tryed the new virgin east coast one it's really good it's been slightly retooled all you have to do is do a respray and get some Lima coaches the Hornby ones as pants and over prised
Is that your final decision (caravan park) on the corner then? Or is there still a wee bit of maybes aye, maybes naw?! ;-) Liking the three track catenary. As you say, aficionados may nit pick, but I'm of the school, if it looks right and you're happy with it, it is right. Great update with lots of progress.
yes it will be a caravan site lol. its decided! Building site with new houses will go in the other corner!.....i think lol. Cheers. Dave
You HAVE to use that half built house somewhere - it's a great little building in its own right. I vaguely remember having some Hornby or Airfix or something ones back in my youth. I thought they were pretty good, but not a patch on that Bachmann one. You could always kit bash some in a spare moment!!! - just kidding! ;-)
G'day Dave from down under. Sorry for a late suggestion/reply but what the heck!
regards to your overhead wiring why not buy fishing reel line to the appropriate scale (20 pound line ?) scuff it up with 1200 grit and paint.
Will by no doubts still be a fiddly job but will save you 100's of pounds!
I am saving up to build a LNER 1930's Glasgow layout just need a decent sized shed first HaHa!
Cheers Wally
