The first car I purchased before my test was a Triumph Toledo 4-door saloon 1974 1,3 it had some MOT but I talked the owner in to putting a full ticket on it, I was doing some winter proofing on it and noticed some underbody gloop with mud blended in to it. I being a bit curious started to rub this off with a petrol soaked rag and a wire brush, I found bits of dog food tins with bits of label on the back pressed to the car had been bent over the Chassis rails in several places riveted in place then seam sealer over the edges made to look like weld and then the under body sealant over the top with mud rubbed over it. I scrapped it and watched it be crushed.

Taylor brings up a good point actually. You guys should do an "Industrial/agricultural equipment" challenge where you all have to get like a tractor or snowplow or whatever, as cheap as you can(that still runs, mostly) but then subject it to all the usual cheap-car challenges such as practricality as a car, including transporting other people and goods, acceleration/braking, track challenge, etc. You would need dedicated private property to test this obviously because I doubt they would be road legal. People could get like bobcat tractors, diggers, etc but they could also get a dump truck if they find one in budget which could hold a dozen people and kill the transport goods portion of the challenge but would probably be shit on a track/handling tests.

Who knew consumer advice could be so much fun! 😂🤣😂 Also, I am happy to report to Taylor that Renault did their homework on the Modus, when doing the face-lift; when the updated version was released in 2008, they made sure it was possible for people with normal hands and not just tentacle-fingered individuals to change headlight bulbs. Having owned the first generation and now owning the face-lift, I got a bit worried when one of the bulbs died, but when I checked it was super easy to change on the newer version. A lot of room and close to reach - could not be easier (unless it worked like on that crappy Volvo). The Renault Scenic II I used to own was far worse, damn near impossible - especially on the left side where the battery was in the way. But did that stop me? No way! A few bruises and a lot of bad language and spurred on by my can-do attitude, I saved my self from leaving it to the dealer service to do it for me. But I loved that car so much, so I could not hate it for minor things like that - the rest was brilliant.

Volvos of this era had common problems with swirl flaps getting clogged up (in the D5 model at least) and the haldex would chew up the teeth on the spline resulting in no drive to the rear, sounds like this car suffers (suffered?) from both. Shame to see as they do drive very nicely when in good nick but they're expensive to repair when they start acting up.

    • @The_VanTM

I can speak from partial-experience, my dad has an '07 D5 AWD, one time when we were on holiday in Austria he had to fill up at a petrol station where they happened to be scrubbing the ceiling with an apparently very acidic (forgive me if that word is wrong, English isn't my first language) cleaning product that dripped down on the car, causing damage to the plastic on the roofbars, a plastic cover on the roof, all the chrome trim around the windows and creating 'droplet-marks' on the windscreen, all of which couldn't be washed or polished away anymore (the ppl from the gas station tried, to no avail). Long story short, all of those parts needing replacement would've cost more than the entire car supposedly was worth. No idea what happened in the end, but my dad (still) hasn't bothered to fix any of it, and she's still running strong, having passed 290.000 km a few days ago (starting from exactly 222.000 when we came back from the test-drive and bought her, not long before Covid struck. Hoping he'll keep driving her for a lot longer cuz I absolutely love the big, brown bugger ^w^

You have to unclip the bumper in the engine bay with 4 clips (They break...), undo two screws in the wheel arch liner, dislodge the bumper and let it hang down a bit, undo 3 bolts and a screw to release the headlight, before you can finally slide it forwards to access the bulbs... It's blocked by the body otherwise. All that for a £3 foglight bulb!

That top engine mount is the first to go. The Powerflex mount is only marginally more expensive than a half-decent pattern part, so Is a logical upgrade. They are a doddle to replace too.

I bought a Lexus LS430 in Birmingham on a wet winter Sunday night a few years ago. It was, of course the cheapest one on the market at the time. It was firing on maybe 5 of 8 cylinders, absolutely stunk of cigarettes and was generally a mess. Anyway, I said that I'd have it if it had an MOT and I was asked if I could hang about for an hour. Happily my family were having a meal not far away so I agreed, and would you believe it... 9pm on a Sunday night a fresh MOT was produced. So I parted with my money, and drove it home. A good weekend of cleaning, and a set of coilpacks later it did me for another 100k miles and became everything from a long distance cruiser to pickup truck until the rear suspension bushings gave out (maybe down to it being used as a pickup truck!) the engine came out, and is being used to this day in a drift car. Love a ropey motor.

11:42 Same as with the 2000-2008 Ford Mondeo. Very easy to replace lights. Though with Mondeo, you need to remove the grill first, which is done even faster than removing the headlight unit.

Another car which you don't want to change a headlight bulb on is the 2016 Ford Mondeo, you can't access the rear of the unit because there is a crash bar behind it. So, you think let's just take the unit off then. And that is when you realise, you can't take the unit out without removing the entire front bumper of the car. So, can't be that bad, right? This is why I hated working at the Ford dealer, every time I got a Mondeo my day was ruined lol

    • @JamesChurchill3
      @JamesChurchill3 Před 5 měsíci

Not uncommon for Ford cars to have stupid engineering choices. I had to move the engine to remove the front lower wishbone on a Focus as the bolt ran into the AC compressor. The brake master cylinder reservoir is hidden under the scuttle panel so instead of designing a new one with an easily accessible lid they just give you a little angled funnel. The Volvo XC-60 my dad owned was designed by Ford and was full of stupid design choices, the suspension struts were gas pressurised and extended too much to be able to remove the lower ball joint without also removing the lower wishbone, which to re-install you're then fighting against the gas pressure in the strut so you have to rig up a load of ratchet straps and muscle the thing into position, which even with straps is not an easy task. The wheel bearings required a special tool to remove and install, and the tool detonated on its first use which resulted in the car going to the great scrapyard in the sky as it would have cost more than the car was worth to have a garage replace all the bearings.

When you first took that off-roading, I was thinking that you’ve got probably one of the only early XC90s that still has working four-wheel-drive and it would be worth a fortune just for parts. And then of course, it turned out that the AWD system was, just as borked as it is on most of them.
It’s a shame, they are nice cars when they’re all together. We’ve got a 2011 one of these, with 180,000 miles on it, and they are absolutely brilliant family workhorses and tow cars, but they do need keeping on top of maintenance wise.

I had a 2013 XC90 AWD with the 3.2 inline 6 cylinder. I had bought it in 2018 with 98,000 miles and at 232,000 miles, I had a 65 mph collision with a deer the week before Christmas 2023. I was the best and most comfortable car I've ever owned. If it wasn't for hitting the deer, that car could have made it to 300,000 miles plus. The only issue I had with it is the rear differential went out at 210,000 miles. Since I live in a snowy environment, I decided to have the rear differential replaced with a used one ($1100 repair).

The yellow powerflex bush in the engine support brace is a pointless modification.
People also put solid bush’s on the outsides of the bar where it fixes to the chassis so there is no movement in it whatsoever.
The purpose behind the bar, is upon impact it will push the engine down instead of into the bulkhead. However, it needs to have the movement there in the first place to do it’s job!

Sad to note, but a lot of new cars are bought by large fleet companies. These often self insure and don’t feed back to the insurance register. Anything that is deemed a write off just gets ditched at auction.

there are plenty of shops tan can reset modules for a few quids, that crash wasn't structural, panels not lining up is allright, there won't be any panel ligning up after a few years on any cars anyways, the letdown was the rust buildup but still a salvagable car if bought for the right price, you don't need a app to see the rear subframe rotting or the airbag lights
