The joy of flying planes with no training and minimal knowledge - X-plane VR in the Sierra Nevadas

  • This video is kind of long, I didn't feel like editing it much. This could probably be hilarious for an actual pilot because I encounter some issues while flying and I'm not sure what is happening :) I made it mostly to show off the amazing potential VR has to really immerse you in a virtual world... one where you can for example, fly planes around the world without any official flight training, without following any laws except the laws of physics, and without worrying about killing anybody,
I almost sold my Vive a week ago because I mostly had it around for development and I didn't like paying subscription for IRacing even though it's awesome, probably because of the incredibly closed nature of the IRacing system. X-plane by contrast is incredibly open for individuals to develop stuff for, like the Ortho4XP program posted on xplane.org by Oscar Pilote, which is what allows this beautiful satellite image and terrain data from the Sierra Nevada mountains in California to wind up in X-plane.
Disclaimer: if you fly a plane in real life, you need formal training.

I am also thinking of buying a VR device. What VR glasses do you use? Is the actual image quality in VR better or worse than in the movie presentation ???

I use the Vive... that's a great question, I do believe what I was seeing was at least slightly better than the video, because there were points I was reading stuff that don't look very clear in the video, I don't know though. You are generally not focusing on the whole image and the lenses do have a kind of small "sweet spot" where the focus is really good. The Vive is an old VR headset as far as they go, the lighthouse tracking is the best part about using it, it is amazingly accurate.

work better if you'd slow your head motion down , just saying
