    I learnt a LOT from this video. My goodness... as a filmmaker, not a electronic engineer, I am always humbled when I come across someone that actually understands how reality is captured by these incredibly clever Japanese sensors, circuits and processors... This camera combines several technological innovations that will make my life as a documentary filmmaker better. I'm genuinely exited, and thankful to Sony... Thanks to Alister and Vocus. Good times!

    I think a lot of us forget how long the E-mount has been in existence. It first appeared in 2010 with the NEX-3. The NEX series of cameras evolving into the Alpha cameras. It certainly feels a lot shorter in time and for most professionals, really it probably does feel like 7 years. I still miss my NEX-5n with which I had a lot of fun and enjoyed very much, despite it's many limitations.

    Anyone else think it would be nice to have audio on slow motion clips?
    Ie. recorded at the same rate as the clip is.
    I work in action sports and we have a massively hard time sourcing suitable audio for our overcranked footage.
    External recorders are not really an option, seeing as we mostly have in excess of 7 cameras in the field at any given time and such a quick turnaround on our products that we simply don't have the resources to sync up so many cameras with audio. So we are left to wing it with what we have in our rather extensive sound library, OR simply shoot in 50p so as to have at least something to work with, off the bat.
    I am yet to understand why a 1000 buck phone offers this feature, but to date, none of the camera manufacturers have given it much thought.
    It would change our lives immensely if this could become a feature of the FX9 and I would certainly consider using the camera on all of our shoots next season.

      I disagree. Yes Sony pays him as an ICE, but Alister is always on public forums and his blog handing out extremely useful information on his own time as well. There are many people paid by Sony who haven’t taught me anything about their cameras. Alister has many videos that you can watch for free on CZcams that teach you essential things that you need to know about Sony cameras. Especially the Sony’s which are notoriously difficult when it comes to different gammas and their native ISO’s, how you expose their log, how to deal with mluts depending on frame rates, etc.

    At 1:44:25 he change the EI to 16000. How come if the recorded image is recorded at 4000ISO the image get noisier?
    Also, in the same example, if your shooting a very dark scene and go to 16000 EI, you actually need to add ND’s (like he did in the video) or close the aperture to compensate and have a well expose image on the viewfinder. But the image is still recorded at 4000 ISO...won’t the recorded image be way to underexposed???

    Is there more technical information about the Resolution? If FX9 has 6K photosites does the FS7 have 4K (well uhd) photosites? Does the Camera emit from the photosite array or is there another plane beyond the photosites that is read from? I had always thought the FS7 had 4K photosites but the Bayer algorithm meant that the image that was read out contained estimated color. So the Resolution was always 4K but you didn't get 4K of measured color.

      I did my own search! This point is addressed in a sequence of videos called: Demystifying Digital Camera Specifications by John Galt and Larry Thorpe. They were shown at an internal presentation by Panavision which some naughty people have put on CZcams. Search that part title and you will find them. They don't really discuss a particular camera but do reinforce Alister's point about pixels not equaling resolution.

    Sony is a definitely a sect.
    There were always and are much better and cheaper alternatives. But I think they have occupied the pedestal by their functions such as picture profiles that can be shared for same settings across cameras which tv studios use a lot.
    Other than that it’s so great what happened with the DSLR era and mobile filming .
    Also I don’t believe the development will go towards bigger sensor size but to its density.
    Perhaps several small chips .

    What has annoyed me here with Sony's marketing strategy is we are now told that the older F5/FS5/FS7 cameras are now not true 4K cameras and we now need to buy this new crippled monstrosity to get real 4K. I won't be buying any further Sony cameras in the future because how can I trust a corporation who lies about its products specs! I'm also not happy with Sony's codecs and the fact that I own 5 Sony cameras and only the F5 doesn't need an external recorder (in fact it does to get RAW). I'm annoyed that I paid a lot of money for my F5 and it had a 'Made in China' sticker hidden underneath the camera. I'm annoyed that S-Log 2 is now not used on these new cameras as in my opinion it has far better dynamic range than S-Log 3. I've had enough of Sony's crippled cameras and will now move to another brand.

    • @alisterchapman
      @alisterchapman Před 4 lety +1

      EVERY camera manufacturer (Arri, BM, Canon.... Panasonic... etc) that sells large format cameras with bayer sensors uses the pixel count as the number of "K" the camera has. They do not state the cameras resolution they state the number of pixels it has and the two are different things. S-Log2 cannot be used in the FX9 as it has insufficient dynamic range. The FX9 has the same codecs as the F5. China is very good at making high quality electronics which is why so many high end manufacturers choose to have their products made their.

    • @Stanleykubrick2
      @Stanleykubrick2 Před 4 lety

      @@alisterchapman Thank you Vocas for not deleting my comment and thank you Alister for your reply. This is easily the best CZcams video I have seen this year and it is full of useful information.
      To reply to your comments. It makes no difference how you word it, buying a 4K camera to find out it really is a 3K camera is a hard pill to swallow.
      I always had a better experience with S-Log 2 but after watching this video again I understand that with no ETTR this new camera does not need S-log 2.
      XAVC 300 is not a good codec. Use it in DaVinci and watch it break. In my opinion ProRes is superior in every way. Being stubborn Sony will never implement the codec that most professional use because it does not listen to it's customers. XAVC 480 is great but you can't use it in HFR modes. Not every project needs RAW and once again this new camera needs an external recorder to get the best out of it.
      If I wanted a camera made in China I would buy a camera from KineFinity or Z Cam. Products made in Japan are made to the highest standard and to pay £20K + from a Japanese company for a product made in China is unacceptable.
      Sony is pushing this new camera for it's auto-focus capabilities. From what I have seen from the FX9 the auto-focus is not good enough for professional shoots.
      And on a final note; Sony E-Mount lenses are terrible for video. Focus by wire is the worst thing to ever happen to the lens world. Most of Sony's lenses are way overpriced for a product made in Thailand or China. Most Sony lenses have bad build quality internally and most copies have terrible de-centering issues.
