  • Ben Franklin's nephew was 65 and living in London when he became interested in books and political pamphlets dating back to the previous century. One item caught his eye. Find out more in this episode of Paul Harvey's "The Rest of the Story."

    Thanks for this history lesson!
Wish educators would teach lessons in this manner....there would be alot more students interested in history!🙂

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I think so too. Teachers that I know (I'm from a family of teachers) say that nowadays teachers are basically given a script to read. That's not teaching. A good teacher has to find a way to connect with each student. :)

In the mid 80’s I had a math teacher that would quote Poor Richard’s almanac almost daily.

With all that was written about Ben Franklin in history books, it seems that the most interesting facts and stories were left out. That leads me to wonder if the writers deemed those facts as not important or interesting enough, or if they merely didn't know of them. Either way, thankfully, we had people like Paul Harvey who dared to dig a little bit deeper for the fun stuff. Thank you for yet another fascinating history lesson.

I'm glad you enjoyed it. I don't know why some stories are printed in books and others left out. The internet has made more historical documents available to us. Before the internet, historians had to physically visit numerous collections in numerous cities to find these historical documents. Then you had to have a reason to see them. Mr. Harvey's son, the writer and creator of "The Rest of the Story," did his research without the aid of computers even after they became readily available. :)

Ben Franklin was not only a true blue American, but a loyal & compassionate person. Being a, inventor, dissenter, & politician was tantamount to his success ! 🤗

I'm glad you enjoyed it. Benjamin Franklin was such an interesting person. Historians are still learning new things about him all the time. Walter Isaacson published a biography on him simply called "Benjamin Franklin." It's fantastic. :)

    Good one, Brad.
I did quickly think of Benjamin Franklin, but it turns out that I was one generation off! Well shoot me!
I truly miss the old days on the job where we would all be trying to beat each other as to whom he was referring.
    Thank you, Brad!

I'm glad this brought back that fond memory. I've heard many people's stories on how they listened to his broadcasts. You're the first to say that they tried to beat each other at guessing. :)
