Chris Jordan hmmm, interesting theory, like maybe she's imagining him being there and kinda serving as her 'good/moral conscience' throughout the game. Could explain why she seems so hell bent on revenge, if those people killed Joel then she would obviously have a reason to 'kill every last one of them' as she put it. Plus, notice how they chose to frame the shot with Joel walking in, eclipsed momentarily in white light before we see his full figure? Could be alluding to something, or some sort of symbolism (or it could all be a red herring, still too soon to know what they have in store for us)

THEORY TIME BOYS: the fireflies try to come and get ellie back revealing that the fireflies are really partially maddened by their quest to find a cure one which doesnt exist and they cant use ellie to create one but they hunt for her to get the “cure” anyways and now ellie and joel are the last survivors of joels brothers town, the fireflies slaughtered them all and now they go for revenge.

I heard there was another game that came out 3 years into production that had the exact same storyline but they had to scrap it and gave us the garbage we have now.
@Mighty Megatron naw apparently she wanted to stick to the more original plot. When Niel came to her with his changes to the plot, because he wanted to "stay true to the character," she had reservations. Eventually he got everyone on board and it was ultimately his vision.

1. I specialise in games design and it was pretty clear to me that some elements of the game were quite loosely strung together
2. Half of the trailer didn't appear in the game.
Btw, never complained about the story. Just said it was clearly quite different. Get a grip. It's just a game. It can't get as unnecessarily offended as you apparently have.

I think people's theory's are right with Joel being a figment of Ellie's imagination, just the line he says in the trailer and they way he appears, Ellie wants to wipe out the firefly for killing Joel. Fireflys are are the new bandits as when Joel killed Marlene and saved Ellie everything they fought to accomplish was for,nothing and the purpose of the fireflys was essentially over.

I kind of rewatched it a few times after I saw people commenting on the fact that Joel may be dead. It makes a whole lot of sense when you think of the signs. The first one we get is actually her hand shaking. Now, if you didn't watch the after bit of the The Last Of Us; One Night Live, this may not click in. Joel's thing was playing the guitar, something that he may have just taught her (as hinted by the fact that Joel passed the guitar to her). After killing and going to play the guitar, it could almost be a way to calm herself after all the bloodshed she's gone through too. It could also show us how unstable she really is mentally/physically. If he wasn't dead, why would he wait so long to come to her? Would he just let her get overpowered possibly? They were inseparable in the first game. He comes out of pure light, which of course can symbolize heaven or purity. Why would he be so clean, and look so young too? It would really only make sense if it was Ellie's image that she wanted to keep of him; healthy, youthful, pure. He also doesn't step on the body, or even go into the water, as if to keep himself perfectly clean. He is also holding the first gun that you get in the game, the one that Ellie would have recognized first in her travels with him. His hair too, that's a telltale sign. His hair looks as if he was back to when Sarah was alive, no grey; he doesn't look like he's lived through hell and back. When he finally enters the room, note that she doesn't even look at him when he talks. Rather, she touches the guitar, sighing as if she is remembering him. Her voice quiets at the end of the song, perhaps due to the fact that she is emotional. Lastly, it's more so, that's she's making a statement, then ever answering either of his questions.
