  • Unfortunately, although there are lots of fantastic levels and stages in video games, there are also a fair few awful ones. This time, we take a look at my personal most hated level of all time, along with some dishonourable mentions from the same game.
    I will more likely pick bad levels from games that I otherwise enjoy. These are the ones that stick out the most and can bring good games down.

    So basically, A timed, luck based escort mission, where the escort will usually be dead by turn 8. Let's throw in fog of war, for good measure. Oh, and don't forget that if one character dies, you can't recruit the other! Recruited Nino? Congratulations, have another person to escort! Want both of them? Keep them both alive by the end of the mission! There's also a boss roaming around, and the items are there to troll you. You have 15 turns to do all that and hope you don't get your ass kicked.
    Oh, and you end up saving the villian for the next game.
    No wonder you hate this goddamn chapter so f**king much.

    Speaking of worst levels ever, how about those gaiden chapters from shadow dragon? All of them, they fail on principle alone. Who the hell is willingly going to kill all but 5 of their units just to unlock a new map, (and no, the fact that many units have no personality or are cannon fodder is not a good reason)? Every enemy is on par or better then you, have cheat weapons, and is a massive luck-based-game. There is no strategy. All in all it really shows how dated the first game is nowadays huh?

    • @SpooniestBard
      @SpooniestBard Před 9 lety +3

      Saltyoven Well you tend to only train about a dozen units anyway and the whole point of the Gaiden chapters is to help replenish your reserves if you went and got too many units killed. And the enemies in the Gaiden chapters I thought were a bit easier than their standard chapter counterparts.
      I didn't like them at first, but I enjoyed them on later playthroughs and especially on hard mode. And they're soldiers some of them are going to die so it makes the role of a tactician more meaningful.

    • @Saltyoven

    Heath killed Ursula with 4 HP left, and dealt with four mercenaries. Florina was cleaning up the vicinity of Zephiel with 3 HP left, and Raven was ORKOing heroes, generals, mages and archers. In a nutshell, I was so lucky that I finished off EVERY enemy on the map.

    Oh my god. All of these chapters I hated on ELIWOOD NORMAL MODE. (I'm a filthy casual so I've never played Hector Hard Mode, and have only beaten Hector's normal mode on a emulator using savestates and arena grinding). Seriously, though, my first playthrough of this game I had no idea how to successfully play a SRPG game, so I would constantly bring my weakest units into battle to ensure that they would level up, so I ended up on Chapter 18x with nobody above Level 10 except maybe Eliwood, but he was super weak at the beginning of the game so I hardly used him. Marcus had died (on Chapter 17 Pirate Ship, I remember vividly), and Lyn was like level 6. So when I got to Battle Before Dawn, I was severely underleveled, had no idea how to actually play this game correctly, and god damn it Nino why do you keep dying before I can get to you? Jaffar died too? What the fuck.

      @SkaiaMechanic Před 4 lety +3

      Same kinda casual here, FE7 was my first SRPG when I was 13, so I couldn't imagine NOT using Marcus? Paladins and Sages are obviously the best units because of weapon triangle and multiple ranges, right? Who needs Archers or Lords? Anyways, all my bad practices finally caught up to me in Ch. 24, the Lloyd version of Four-Fanged Offence. I just couldn't beat it. So I restarted, leveled up units much better, and beat the Linus version. Still, Battle Before Dawn required a week of resets...and the Gaiden mission after that had ANOTHER long-range Bolter Boss that could easily surround and kill my characters. (I know I'm responding 3 years later, but I still have STRONG FEELINGS about this game and the anger it brought me.)

    I think this chapter is better then Fire Emblem 6's desert level. Why? You COULD easily fix this chapter just by moving Nino's position to in the throne room with Zephiel. (Also, maybe buff Zephiel's stats up A LITTLE) It solves the issue of random deaths (at least Nino's and Zephiel's) by giving them some bloody back up! That way, the challenge factor is entirely up how well you can circumnavigate the castle quickly before turn 13 happens and Ursula making a fucking beeline for Zephiel.
    You COULD fix the Arcadia chapter by making Roy promote sooner, buff the priest's stats, less fucking bandits, give some Roy a dragon-slaying blade, LESS FUCKING BANDITS- *has sudden stroke*

    It's really funny actually... this is by far my faourite level in FE7, has been ever since I first played it. To the point where whenever I start a new playthrough of the game, this is the point I look forward to the most. And it actually shows how different my approach to FE is compared to everyone else. I play it for the story and don't give a crap about "efficiency" or HHM.
    This chapter is the culmination of the Bern arc of the game. You're racing to stop an assassination attempt and save THREE people. On the lower difficulties, I love how much Jaffar just slaughters everything that comes near him. I like getting Nino to him to unlock the side chapter. The closure it brings to his redemption story. And there's some really good loot in the chests. The only thing I hate is the boss: they make one of the Four Fangs an optional boss who stays out of your range most of the time? Weird. I almost never manage to kill her in my runs.
    Then again, I usually stay away from HHM on this game, I don't find it fun at all with my playstyle. Eliwood Hard Mode is fine (it's actually probably equal to the NORMAL mode of most FE games) but on HHM I can see why this chapter is so hated: so much luck involved in the NPCs surviving, and someone on the design team was a total scumbag and gave the enemies near Jaffar Swordslayers. On Normal getting to him is pretty doable if you sent a Paladin around the left side.

      Ah yes FE5, the one game in the franchise that finds a way to screw you even if you grinded yourself up a team of super powerful units. Used your favorite character too much? Fuck you, now you can't use them on the next level which is most likely harder than the last. And don't even get me started on the enemy-exclusive class, Barons, who have the ability to use almost any weapon in the game AND have the massive amounts of defense generals are known for.

    Just recently finished this level on Eliwood normal. I hated it so much. Jaffar died before I could reach him 5 times, so I had to completely change my strategy and use almost all my mounted units. What's worse is that I had to ignore the chests because I was too busy trying to keep everyone alive. There goes my brave lance. Oh and I couldn't get the elysian whip because I had to play so defensively that I couldn't even get to the bishop who was it. RIP Heath, totally worth getting you to level 20 just so that you can't upgrade. Oh and fuck Ursula too. I had to restart four times because I was going for a "no-death run", but Ursula had different plans. I had to use up most of my vulneraries/elixirs to beat that chapter, it's probably my least favorite one in that game. I also hate living legend. It's easy in normal mode but getting that side quest as well as all the hidden items is annoying

Gaiden requirement - finish the chapter in 25 turns. Difficult if you want all the treasure and the staff assholes keep putting Roy to sleep. • @BigKlingy
      @BigKlingy Před 9 lety +6

      There's a lot of horrible levels in 6. There's one chapter where you have to keep a certain ENEMY alive (they don't join until afterwards) to get a sidequest (and you need all the sidequests to get the last 3 chapters of the game), the horrible chapter before the Zephiel one, a huge map with massive wyvern lord reinforcement spam, a time limit to get a sidequest, a character who really seems like he was planned to be recruitable but the devs went "eh, no" at the last minute and a horribly tough boss.
      Hilariously, the actual final chapter of FE6 is by far the most pathetically easy in the series.

      But I even almost managed the level on my first run somehow! Except Axereaver Miledy, who I sent to distract the Berserker assholes, ended up getting hit by a 20-something% Brigand (on top of a Devil Axe and Halberd hit each) who happened to just about kill her. In FE6, he invades Sacae and practically wipes out the Kutolah tribe, leaving only a handful of survivors. In Shin's ending, it's mentioned that he becomes the next leader of the tribe after Dayan retires, so that probably means that Rath got killed during one of Zephiel's attacks as well as whoever Sue's mother was. Guy also most likely got killed as well, unfortunately. (THE FAVORITE CHARACTER CURSE STRIKES AGAIN DX)

    This level was bitch for me even in normal mode, but luckily I still recruited Jaffar and Nino, saved Zephiel and kept all my units alive in one piece. Now if you ask me. Fuck FE 4 and 5. I don't know if you played those games but a lot of levels are almost as frustrating as this one. Well first off enemies are smarter and all will attack one of your units. Making it easier to kill down your army in the long run. And I am the kind of player that can't afford to let even one single unit die. If they die then I just restart the level. But that's only if you have standards like I do. And also I first played FE6 and then everything in GBA afterwards, so I wasn't use to FE 4&5 mechanics, but what made me cringe is that sometimes the boss enemies will move " sometimes" and extremely rarely you see bosses in the GBA and Gamecube do that. And bandits normally will get to one village before you do, sometimes it's an item that doesn't matter but like I said, I am the kind of guy who wants everything. But we all know the biggest bull shot of them all and it can be in any FE game! The arena. You try to train one of your weaker units and then bad luck strikes. They find the one unit that can one shit kill yours and you can not exit it out until they hit you. That sucks. I love FE but it can be a serious troll to players.

    I'd like to vouch for the Path of Radiance chapter where you have to mount a boat to Begnion as being a Worst Level Ever. I've had to restart that chapter multiple times because of stuff I had no way of accounting for happening:
    - Needing to send a Laguz unit towards the myrmidon to recruit him isn't that hard to figure out, but by the time the dialogue that even makes you aware he exists pops up, your Laguz could be halfway across the map.
    - A recruitable unit spawning right at the start, once Ike has already probably moved halfway across the map. I assumed there were going to be enemies near there due to the Wyverns hanging just out of the map borders, but I didn't assume a recruitable would be among them, and so I couldn't really backpedal on my mistake before Jill suicided on the units i left behind.
    - Black Knight spawning in the center of the map as an ambush reinforcement... as in, he moves immediately when he spawns, immediately killing a unit i had placed near there to bait Jill closer to Ike during a different attempt.
    - This map is pretty wide and basically forces you to use your cavaliers and Ike to make any progress, since you need to leave at least one Laguz behind for the myrmidon. However, due to the aforementioned Jill, you have to leave Ike at the start, thus you can't utilize him to help make a dent in the enemy forces. This is a problem because your only other sword units are Mia, who sucks imo, and the aforementioned Myrmidon recruit, who is recruited on the opposite end of the map as the majority of enemies. You also have to ensure Jill doesn't suicide on Ike but also that her other wyvern buddies don't kill Ike either. And on top of that, the Black Knight spawns very soon after Jill does, so...
    Overall a really obnoxious map in a game i was starting to really enjoy.

    Here's my strategy for this level:
    1. Leave both Merlinus and a staff user with a high enough staff rank to use the Rescue staff at the start.
    2. Either split up or go with you entire army to Nino's side. (Get a thief or someone with a chest key on Nino's side, too.)
    3. Get the Rescue staff from the chest. (Make sure the character that gets the staff has full inventory for you to send it to Merlinus.)
    4. Send it to Merlinus.
    5. Give the Rescue staff from Merlinus to your staff user. (It'll be easier to do this when he promotes and gets a wagon, since you can leave him anywhere.)
    6. Use the Rescue staff on Zephiel.
    I still can't believe my completely untested strategy went into a Whoisthisgit video and worked, though I doubt that it came from a random commenter like me, and he just had the same strategy that I had. I hope it was the former.
