  • Normally, I have no trouble deciding on what level from a game I hate the most, but sometimes, I'm so spoiled for choice, I just can't settle on one.
    I understand that opinions can vary drastically on what makes a level no fun to play, which is why today's episode of Worst Levels Ever on Battletoads is a D.I.Y special.

    I think Clinger-Winger is the worst tbh because while the the two levels you mentioned previously gave you an idea of what to avoid, this level just gives you only two things: You're being chased down by an advancing disc of doom and if you screw up once, then you're fucked.

    I've run through Battletoads several times. Both with and without the infinite lives cheat, and I've beaten it both with it on, and with only the 3 lives and 3 continues you start the game with. At this point, it's actually become one of my favorite games on the NES in a strange love/hate ying yang. I love how satisfying and fun the control and gameplay is; but I hate how fiendish and unforgiving the difficult is. But stepping up to the challenge is part of the fun. Battletoads demands perfection, and that's even in the lore.
    From my experience: The last few levels all fit flawlessly as the hell spire of difficulty.
    Turbo Tunnel, Surf City and Volkmire's Inferno are all basically the same concept; just ramped up more and more each time. The Turbo Tunnel is hard, but honestly with a lot of practice; it's pretty easy to plow through it barely hitting anything. Surf City is where I started to lose my patience, since you have to veer around everything since you can't jump in it. And Volkmire's Inferno is just bullet hell the level.
    Intruder Excluder is the first stage in my opinion that ups the ante; at this point in the game, you might as well not even have a life bar, as everything from here on out basically kills you instantly anyway. Still, with patience and practice; it's pretty easy to learn the places you can stand without getting hit, and how to bypass the gas and fans without getting hit.
    Terror Tubes is brutally punishing, and mixes terrible swimming controls, with horrid enemies, and tons of instant kill spikes. To this day, it's the only level I consistently struggle on due to the underwater controls being testy at times.
    Rat Race is really unforgiving, and pretty much requires you to hit Scuz at a certain point to get him stuck into taking longer then usual. If you miss, or he catches up; you've basically lost unless you are lucky enough to be at a part where you can bounce him off the walls a few times.
    Clinger Winger is actually not as hard as the others, but one mistake can prove fatal; making it a very unforgiving stage. Once you get the hang of it though, it's actually not as hard as people claim it is.
    The Revolution is brutal if you don't take your time. Full of tricky enemies, and instant kill platforming sections. Approach it cautiously though, and it's much less painful.
    However, if going in without the Infinite lives code; the thing you will quickly learn to fear the most, is the bosses. Big Blagg, Robo Manus, General Slaughter, the Hypnodisc, and the Dark Queen, can all kill you instantly if they land on you; and can often combo you from full health to death, if they even scratch you once. When doing the game without infinite lives, one bad run against any of these bosses, can see you losing all your lives in seconds. Playing defensively and carefully against them is a must.
    I dunno if I'd call it the hardest game on the NES; but it is definitely the most fiendishly dickest game on the NES. I'll give Rare Credit, Battletoads was sold to kids, this might as well have been a torture device... it took me about a month to be able to clear it as an adult; due to the amount of practice was needed, I can't even imagine how brutal it must've been for kids who had it growing up. And if you don't know to juggle the birds in stage 2 for extra lives early on; the whole game will be fiendish, unforgiving and humiliating.

      I had a friend when I was about 10 years old. He and I managed to beat Battletoads, with the exception of Clinger Winger bc we are in the US. We made an executive decision that we would just pretend Clinger Winger didn't exist, and we used Game Genie to warp to the final level and beat it. Brutal is a pretty good word for it.

      @coffeebeans5460 Před 7 lety +108

      That's understandable. Though, I personally don't think it's that much of a bad thing to call a difficult game unfair when it progressively gets more frustrating. People simply can not call me out for thinking that Clinger-Wringer is so screwed-up. I mean, there's trial-and-error, and then there's making the most unexpected turns with the most perfect precision.

      They started out making a beat 'em up but got addicted to vehicle and platforming segments in effort to add variety (something that most beat 'em ups lack). Also, this was in the NES age where it didn't matter how hard your game was.

Those are games that while still hard, tweaked the level design and enemy placement to make it an actual fun hard game like megaman or castlevania instead of so brutishly hard that they're borderline unplayable. Clinger-Winger has always been my nemesis!
    Unlike the other extremely hard timing based levels in the game, Clinger-Winger comes up very late in the game. Turbo Tunnel was never that bad for me, as it only takes a few minutes to get back to it for a new chance to learn the pattern, and you will likely have all your lives, a few extra and all your continues at this point, so you get quite a few tries to get good at it... Because Clinger-Winger comes up so late, i'm almost always on my last or second to last continue when i get there, so i only get a few tries at it, and i eventually resorted to mapping it out on a piece of paper to beat it!

    I feel like ProtonJon's 4-Player Battletoads race (go watch it if you haven't, it's one of the funniest things I've ever seen on CZcams and got me into Let's Races) perfectly captures the essence of this game. These guys are professional LPers, and even having infinite lives they still took 3 hours to beat it.
    There is a moment in Part 5 where Jon thinks that he has beaten Clinger Winger because he is on the finish line but the disc gets him anyway that sounds like he's being killed IRL. So maybe Git's Clinger Winger Theory is closer to the mark than you think?
    I never got past Turbo Tunnel even as an adult so that's probably my least favourite, but I have to say that Clinger Winger glitch makes me angry. You reward two players managing to coordinate through ten of the hardest levels ever with an unbeatable one? Thankfully, Rare took it down a notch when making Donkey Kong Country and Banjo Kazooie.

  • @pentelegomenon1175
    @pentelegomenon1175 Před 3 lety +2

    There's a Game Boy port of this game called Ragnarok's World with the difficulty corrected (many devs back then didn't know that you could ruin a game with too much difficulty, they thought it just increased the play time), also the view is zoomed in and the levels are altered a bit for the lower resolution screen (so the game is more arcade-like, and farming lives in the Wookie Hole is much easier), and some of the worst levels are removed (Intruder Excluder, Surf City, Volkmire's Inferno, and Terra Tubes). I played this version a lot when I was little and it is really fun, the Karnath Pit is my favorite level and my least favorite is either Wookie Hole (a little bit boring, especially when farming lives) or Ice Cavern (although it's easy to warp past since Surf City isn't there, and despite its cruel design I still get some enjoyment from it, the music in particular). The game does feel incomplete without Terra Tubes, but the original level was simply too broken to not cut from the game, it was a good call. As for myself, it's no contest, the worst Battletoads level is objectively Volkmire's Inferno. It's basically the Turbo Tunnel but with no understanding of what makes Turbo Tunnel work, or indeed how any level in any game works, its visuals are as repulsive and bland as its gameplay and I can't imagine what possessed Rare to not cut this barely functional waste of imagination from the game before they released it.

    My three most hated from Battletoads:
    3. Snake Pit--I just COULD NOT DO THIS for some reason. As a kid this was the level that stumped me(didn't know about the warp). Seems other people don't find it so bad but not me.
    2. Arctic Cavern-- Just annoying as shit with so many instant death spikes and slippery floors. Just can't stand. The first real unfun stage the game has imo.
    1. Volkmire's inferno--least fun stage in the whole game. Really tough to even see the stupid lightning walls as they come toward you. Even using savestates I had trouble getting through this. It's like turbo tunnel except it looks and plays shittier.
    Turbo Tunnel I think is a great stage and never found it all that difficult. Like Surf City a lot too--random but nothing too bad. Rat Race I think is awesome, nails frantic+frustrating really well and isn't too hard honestly. Clinger sucks but it can be cheesed by pausing at the corners, so doesn't get to me all that badly.

I can manage to make it to that level, arguably without many problems (assuming I use the warp that lets me skip the stage in which you fly and dodge lasers), but then that same level fucks me up. It doesn't help that the level after that is the one where you ride the wheel and where you're required to have near perfect timing so that the ball chasing you doesn't catch up with you.

If I use the analog stick, sometimes it feels like my inputs don't even register. I'm not sure if those arrows on the floor are meant to clue you in on when to change direction. I heard there's a pause trick, but will it work on this version?
    Spent an hour on Rat Race, and yes, the final sequence is nerve-wracking. Why, on top of everything else, do they block off the last bomb with an electric gate? Yeah, the one thing I want to do when time is of the essence is wait around. One time I punched the rat while on top of the gate, and he flew offscreen. When I kicked the bomb and found I'd soft-locked the game...well, all I can say is, thank goodness for save states.
