Worst Levels Ever # 18

- Unfortunately, although there are lots of fantastic levels and stages in video games, there are also a fair few awful ones.
For the eighteen episode, the featured level is my least favourite chapter by far from Live A Live.
I will more likely pick bad levels from games that I otherwise enjoy. These are the ones that stick out the most and can bring good games down. - Hry
to be fair, the concept of a robot thing powered by the remains of people liquified while they were still alive is pretty damn horrifying
This chapter would of been more fun if Akira's powers allowed him to dodge an enemy's attack in advance. Maybe even predict their future attacks. Would've made up for his overall weakness.
Or be able to see all their attacks and their radiuses
Come on Remake…show them how it’s done!
The remake actually seems to have doubled Akira's evade. Out of all the characters; I noticed Akira seemed to dodge twice as often.
Like shulk from xenoblade
@@Kohchualso, his cast times were either removed or shortened from what I’ve heard
To be fair he's litteraly just some punk ass teen with some psychic powers compared to the super mma fighter and the caveman who hunts dinos for dinner
I like how you skimmed over the best part of the chapter: Matsu overdosing on drugs and managing to awaken Buriki Daioh in his shroom rage. It speaks volumes about how poor Akira is at the whole psychic thing, when Matsu does it better WHILE HIGH.
And near death
And near death
Matsu also fucking dies from overdosing on psychedelics and awakening Buriki Daioh.
i thought it was alcohol... was that place not a bar???
@@Bokune9999 no, from the look of it it was more like a pawn shop
18:50 "Pissed Fist". That's the best name for an attack I've ever seen in an RPG.
i hope somone makes an RPG with harambe as a playable character and one of harambes attacks should be "wario world pause song" and it goes on for 50 minutes (like the original song)
That'd be amazing...ly disastrous. :P
Taurmega but its amazing
yoshiclay9000 I don't think that would end well
My fist is pissed!
I was disturbed by the liquefied humans part when you find the tubes in the facility and can read their minds where they ask for help.
Genocyber vibes.
So you're telling me.... a kid with psychic powers is weaker than a cowboy, a caveman, a wrestler and a miniature robot?
Well, they're not powerful psychic powers. No levitation or brain lightning I guess.
Yes
Looks like it.
He can control a robot that is stronger at least. His low kick was his strongest attack.
I'm pretty sure it's a reference to Ness, right?
Having watched Akira and played this chapter I can safely say the movie actually makes less sense.
well, shit
Yep... other than being a distopian future... it shares nothing else in common with the actually movie.
Well considering it's a compressed adaptation of a 2000 page manga.
Well, did it make sense in the first place?
Plague Doctor Sure, it's because the plot is more of a jigsaw puzzle, you don't know what you're looking at until you piece it out by the end. the problem with the movie is that the jigsaw puzzle is incomplete.
This has no relation to the Anime AKIRA, since the name alone is a generic name in Japan. This chapter has more in common with Getter Robo, any super Robot anime from the 70's and 80's, Gigantory/Tetsujin-28 and Getter Robo. If you look at Buriki Daioh, he looks similar to Tetsujin in a way and Black Getter, both are bulky built robots. Just that Tetsu was controlled by a boy with a remote control and Black Getter was piloted.
The artist behind this chapter worked various robot anime. G Gundam being one. If you look rather closely, Akira and Domon kind of look the same, same hair style and sideburns.
Psycho comes from characters with the powers of telekinesis. Which Akira excels in. He would be refereed as a "PychoDriver", which are mech pilots with that sort of power are called.
The whole"DIS IS BASED OFF AKIRA!" is a common misconception. I cringe also when people compare him to Ness as well.
I watched Akira, because it seemed intresting. I dont even know how people confuse the two. First of all, the main character isnt akira, Akira was a name of the boy who basicaly started the whole thing and whose power started ww3.
And the one with the powers is basicaly a side character when you think about it.
Guess what? Tomokazu Seki (Domon Kasshu) is casted in the remake, although he voices Masaru instead.
But on the other hand, Akira is voiced by Kenji Akabane, the goddamn Koji Kabuto!
I mean, it's still a cyberpunk with angsty teenagers and biker gangs(and psychic powers). It's an understandable misconception.
And I'm surprised you didn't mention mainline(Universal Century) Gundam because they pretty much pilot mechs with their psychic powers.
Also, I think it’s more like Kamen Rider as well. The Crusaders are very similar to the main antagonists of the original series Shocker
@@thejman5683 The mecha's theme song even starts with "Go Go" and has a very similar intro to Animal Crossing's "Go K.K. Rider", which I vaguely recall reading was based on that.

Git, some info on this chapter:
Its main inspiration is not exactly Akira but "psycho manga" (not sure if this genre actually exists with this name), a type of manga made popular by Akira where the heroes have mind-related powers, and generally are violent and over the top. "Psycho" in Japanese is used to describe people with powers such as telekinesis and mind reading, and this is why this chapter's battle theme is called "Death by the hands of a Psycho". This psycho craze also rubbed off on other games, such as the very first pokèmon.
Another huge inspiration is old mecha manga and anime from the 60s/70s: not only the Buriki Daioh theme sounds a lot like Mazinger Z's opening, Buriki itself comes out of the lake *just like* Mazinger! Plus the characters and setting can remind you a lot of those type of anime too.
I guess this chapter style-wise is an interesting mix of old and of what was new at the time.
Getter Robo is also an inspiration as well.
There is some Kamen Rider refs sprinkled in as well.
In general this chapter is a love letter for older school anime...
I'm a bit disappointed in git's dislike of "anime", as it seems for the same premature reasons as many people. Anime just means cartoon, there's series of all types and styles. From generic cliche-fests to some of the deepest and strangest shit you can find.
It's kinda like saying you won't watch Avatar because you dislike Looney Toons.
***** Or won'twatch older anime.
Most people won't get this chapter's refernces, since it was based off allot of older mecha anime and a bit of Kamen Rider.
+Akira Tadokoro Oh, what parts of this chapter are inspired by Getter? Now I am curious.
There is a long list. Care I explain?
18:05 "Without Matsu you're nothing!"
Oh crap, they know...
I love that Matsu literally controls Buriki Daioh by getting so damned hammered that he gets psychic powers.
this chapter has some seemingly random motifs: liquified humans, birds and hand washing. Curiously enough, they relate to each other, albeit in an obscure sort of way.

How
Every time I watch this I try to figure out why Akira is as weak as he is, I THINK what they were going for was a party member (final chapter) who gets more versatile rather than just stronger, forcing him to fight smarter not harder, since he has a lot of moves that try to apply statuses across wide areas. issue being, his chapter isn't really built with status spam in mind, its built as if he's a mass targeting damage machine, which he only becomes if you spend WAY too long grinding.
It was to change up the play style. I thought his was the coolest one to play. Every battle was like a puzzle. The right moves you win like big time. Wipe the whole team 2 hits, but if you loose get hit. You die. Like die die. Lol
Probably they just didn't know how to balance him alright (at the time). He is better in the Remake.
"YOUR ASS IS GRASS" Wow XD
that's some really old slang, you see.
+AdziPL Outdated. It's 80s and 90s.
No, it's the best line a game has ever used. Better than "Mai boi, this peace is what all true warriors strive for!" Or "What is a man? A miserable little pile of secrets!"

Tbh, Akira the movie its NOTHING like this. Like... not at all...
TETSUOOOO!!

I had no idea the phrase "Your ass is grass!" was that old. That was a trip seeing it in a 16-bit RPG of all things.
For one thing, that chapter has the best soundtrack in the whole game imo
I really hope the remake fixes the padding in this chapter. this is the only chapter that has it which is uninteresting.
Just played this chapter in the remake, and with all the extra battle info it's WAY more clear why Akira felt like he sucks. Half of the enemies are resistant to your beginner attacks!
So if you grind up to level 9 or 10 you learn way better spells. Thankfully it's not the worst level grinding since you can just defeat the one leader enemy and the battle is over.
So does Akira actually suck? Not really, but he's still the weakest of protagonists.
And bless the new skip button. And the radar. And the shorter stairs.
I confess I was scared about those stairs, but they used the 2DHD very well with them. They are still long but more enjoyable than the endless stairs from the original version
The enemies give you around 33-34 exp, which is why you can level up after just 3 battles. It's a godsend compared to level grinding in Oboro's chapter with the lost souls

+eltiolavara9 i Saw Your Comment When it Popped-Up.
I'm. Intentionally holding off on this chapter, but I know one thing you missed. Liquid human M-1 Is supposed to be a boss with an extremely cheap weakness. Any attack that hits him from behind SHOULD instakill him. I'll probably heat this chapter before Ninja though, ninja sounds like a complex PAIN.
P.S. It would be cool if you ended up making a beginners guide to LaL video for idiots like me who don't know how to tacle the challenge. Just a basic rundown of each chapter with tips for each one?
I thought ninja would be one of my least favorite chapters at first too, but it turned out to be one of the most fun.
It depends on your approach to the ninja chapter, it is easy if you decide to go full on ninja gaiden on everything, which will make hayate evil with bad karma, or go full on metal gear solid peace walker route and go through with stealth without killing anyone, which is difficult as hell but you get Hayate's ultimate weapon out of it. There are enemies you can kill that won't raise your karma like the ghosts so you aren't entirely deprived of grinding for levels.
tbh the only trouble I had with this chapter was finding who to talk to, and defeating Liquid Human W-1. Also, Akira is a powerhouse if you level him up enough.
Sammo has raw power. Akira is a mixed bag.
Isn't Sammo just a variant of Masaru? I've never really used Sammo before so I'm not sure, but from what I've heard, he's basically the same as Masaru.
He is.
You can't compare someone who uses magic and physical powers to someone who can be a tank and relies on raw power.
Cube and Akira are more likely a good comparison.
Masaru and Sammo have more base HP.
Out of the three Students.
Yuan has the lowest HP, but can be really good towards the peak of the game. Most people chose Lei/Rei/Li due to she is the only female and that her stats are well rounded.
Akira(Me,lel), has lowHP from the start, but gets better stats and HP.
Sundown has VERY low HP, but can hit hard.
+Akira Tadokoro Akira is IQ focused area attacker. Everybody, focus on IQ and Atk raising equipment and he will do serious damage to multiple enemies every occassion.
lready know that. I played the game for ten years.
Coming from someone who has watched the film AKIRA a countless number of times (with it being my all time favorite anime), I can say just by what you've shown from this video that this chapter has almost nothing in common with the film, at least in terms of story and characters (with the exception of one of the main characters having psychic powers). The only connections to the film that I can see are merely vague references at best, so watching the movie to understand this chapter's story really won't help you at all I'm afraid. However, I do recommend you see the film anyway. I'm actually not the biggest anime fan either, but I thought the film was surprisingly complex and, most importantly, very fun to watch!
Oh, and that "anime intro"... my God...
+TheThoughtCollector I love anime and see both the anime and live-action AKIRA movies. To call either complex is such an understatement that the word complex is probably looking for you to beat the insides out of you for the gargantuan insult you've given it by putting those movies on its level
Can we just say that the mecha chapter's theme song is bad-ass?
This chapter is a perfect example of why most RPG protagonists are melee fighters. Having a main character that is weak and has to rely on other characters most of time isn't heroic at all and makes for some frustrating gameplay. It wouldn't be so bad if Akira's "spells" were actually reliable, but as you pointed out, they aren't.
In Persona 1 the protagonist has one of the worst initial Persona. Buuuuut he also looks a lot more heroic than Akira who is just saved by plot (Being saved by the liquid human exploting himself by overcharge) and the things that he did could have been done by other characters with less bullshitery and puzzle fuckery. So I don't think is that Akira is bad because he is weak, but it is because being weak is the cherry on the top of him being an unlikable character. If he at least were fun gameplay-wise it would be kind-of a redeeming factor but you have to endure all his Shit and you ALSO have to grind like a fucker to make him at least a little playable. That or depend on the Side-Characters with much better stats
if i was writing an RPG id make it so that the main hero gets magic powers and then just uses them to falcon punch people. the only reason they dont use it for projectilesm or healing, or to its best tactical effectiveness is just because they think thats something pussies would do, and because reading tomes and hiding behind your stronger friends is for nerds
Akira wearing Taeko's panties? Umm...
Japan.
***** On one of the stats screens it said Akira had an item named "Taeko's panties" equipped.

The anime setting seems less like Akira (only the name, psychic powers, and bikes are references to it) and more like Devilman, Mazinger Z, Getter Robo, Giant Robo and hot blooded 70s shonen that end up being really fucked up. Akira reminds me of Domon Kashuu of G Gundam, which premiered months before the game came out.

Here from Extra History? Funny we meet at such a random video. Was it Walpole?
For some odd reason, when I played as Akira, he was OP to the point where I made him surpass Matsu. He was even stronger than the rest of the main characters and I have no idea how he was.
Interestingly enough, when I played this chapter I actually skipped through the Buriki Daioh nonsense. I mean I attempted it, but messed up on it and when I left Toei's place, the plot continued on. Of course this meant that I couldn't get my items refined by Toei, but I didn't need them regardless.
Another thing is that I got Matsu to join my party at the HQ infiltration early by using a bathroom in the lower floor. When you use a toilet, a guard tries to attack you but Matsu comes in, saves you, then joins your party. Heck I think I either skipped the crusader battle entirely because of that, or the battle was so easy thanks to Matsu's pissed fist that I forgot about it.
I do have to say that it might be my least favorite, but I still enjoyed the chapter. It definitely has its flaws, but it didn't really hinder the game for me.
If only there was a cheat code that allowed you to take the mecha's stats and put them in Akira
There's like a "quick level up" cheat in game genir
I hope there's a full play of this boss that shows Buriki's HP at some point. I want to calculate that mech's max HP, dangit!
Edit: I FOUND IT! The mech has 2,032 max HP.
Well, good for you! :)
I think Vaporizer Bomb actually happens when you hit the back of the boss, and Hell Image hits the back of it. The back being the upper left corner of it.

Live a live is getting a remake is coming to the west
Let's Hope Akira is buffed
As an Akira fan, I can tell you that this chapter only follows the anime/manga in the most shallow and basic of ways (a few names and a handful of plot points here and there). In fact, I think this chapter has more in common with Neon Genesis Evangelion than it does Akira.
Everyone says its based off Akira but it isn't
The 'Mind Reading' ability reminds me of Ivan and Sheba's Mind Read Psyenergy from Golden Sun...
(chuckles)
"I love the gorgeous art style of Anime, but many of its character archetypes and tropes piss me off to no end"
Same here.
At least it seems that the remake is making this chapter justice, with the compass to guide you wherever you need to go, gorgeous visuals, a remastered vocal version of the theme song and an apparent buff to Akira
Only thing left is to be patient and see what the remake can do for the final product
I think the switch remake actually made Akira a little more tolerable to play with. Also I'm thankful for the addition of the radar or I would've probably been lost. Though one thing I hate is that some really good abilities that can be used on cube in the finale are locked behind using toei (renamed tobei in the remake) remaking the items and on top of that you have to remember to take them off the robot companion before the point of no return in the steel titan. Never would've figured out how to get stuff like the chick laser without a guide. It's a pretty annoying chapter in either version honestly. Also I am so glad the remake changed up the item refinement cutscene to two separate ones to show if it was a success or failure, as well as the option to skip cutscenes if it gets repetitive (which it will)
Not at all, I mean about Cube.
Cube's best abilities are the ones he had by default, especially Masser Cannon and the Heal AoE, he doesn't really need the parts from Akira's chapter.
I can tell your for certain that Akria's healing, damage output, and HP have been significantly buffed in the remake. Cold Day in Hell(Freeze Image), Devil's Due(Shadow Image), and Holy Blow are quite powerful. His healing skills also seam to heal one person way more than Cube heals to one person. Pairing Akria with Pogo seems to be a good strategy.
If only its healing was also a counter and healed statuses with an AOE range, Akira is better anyways if you dont want to endure the tedious process of farming robotic parts.
@@C20521
Anyone can become best healer with the right items in this game anyway, you just need the fertile charm and the maid healing item from Oboromaru's chapter.
Also, you don't really need to farm robotic parts for Cube. The abilities he has by default are more than enough, and sadly the robotic enhancements doesn't even transfer to the final chapter.
Strangely, this is the chapter I started with, after you introduced me to the game, and I'm having a good time.
Still the first chapter I played in the remake.
For once I'm early. Better make a joke.

Hi Dog.
WE R LEJUN
Liquefied humans? Neon Genesis Evangelion? It is really an anime chapter! (Great anime though. Well, maybe not great, but surely deep)
My rationalization for Akira’s psychic moves being so weak is that it’s based on how smart the ENEMY is. With the ordinary gang members, his spells do little damage because they’re weak minded.
But against the machine enemies and the other weird things, his psychic moves do much more damage. The other bodyguards in the skyscraper also take more psychic damage than the gang members.
Akira can’t hurt them with his mind because their minds are too dumb to register it.
After watching the remake of this game and video on it, I felt like punching myself for not knowing you could easily end that one boss just by punching it from behind XD
"Perhaps my slight hate of anime is what hampered my enjoyment of this chapter"
I know how it feels.
Cool, I always thought I was the only person in the world who felt this way! 😀
Same, anime is anime,it shouldnt be an interferance or necesserities im game,
Even as a guy who watches anime i also felt anime shouldnt force down our throat through games
We need an upgraded version of this, comparing the original with the remake.
Also, they changed Taeko's clothes for her savings (and a photo).
Love you and the Live a Live video.
I'm sad that I will never be able to enjoy this game myself.

Download the emulator. The game was never released outside of Japan, the only way to play it in English is a fan translation, so you're not doing anything bad.
Are you aware of the remake that came out a few months ago?
I have a funny feeling we'll be getting an extra on this one come the remake
Well, some good news is the Mecha chapter has the potential to be less terrible given the announcement of the Live A Live remake/remaster/whatever I don't even know what's what these days
Not going to go so far as to say "fixed," that's getting _too_ optimistic, but hey, it'll be nice to be able to experience Live A Live myself after seeing this video and others you've done on it so long ago
akira is getting buffed.
Actually, Matsu got hammered to near death levels and controlled it......I guess that's how you boost your spiritual connection eh?
I have only played the remake.
I have to admit that despite Akira made it to my final party composition (along with Lei, Pogo and Oboromaru), his scenario was definitely the least interesting for me.
Personally, my least favorite chapter would have to be the wrestling one(Masaru). I get that the developers wanted their own version of the Blue Mage; but I feel it wasn't handled too well. The only thing I like about that chapter is that you get to lay the smack-down on Odie.
If I can recommend an anime to watch that isn't pure BS with the tropes I would have to say Yu Yu Hakusho, which is also my favorite anime.
I do like how Akira and his powers are a direct reference to, well, Akira
Boy, if you can’t follow this story, you’re gonna shit yourself watching Akira
14:51 I'm sorry... Whaaaaaat?
He stole her panties... And now he's wearing them?
So, will there be a Best Levels Ever video covering your favorite chapter from Live A Live?
Well, since the battle system (and other things) are so flawed, how would you improve the game to NOT be so flawed?
Curious to know, since even I haven't figured out everything in the battles. Too much totally unexplained stuff.
I always loved future themes.. thankfully I picked distant future first 😅
If you hate character archetypes that much, then I'd suggest to you Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. It's super unique in it's setup and characters.
I totally agree with you. Akira chapter is by far ther worst one from the game. I mean, I like Buriki Daioh, and the mind reading thing is a cool theme, but anything else is so frustating, and to make things worse this chapter is so long. People usually say that Masaru's chapter is the worst, but on that chapter you at least need to have some strategies to win, since all enemies are bosses, and Masaru is pretty strong to hold himself up, but Akira is pretty weak, and most of his attacks needs charging, wich makes him vulnerable for a while, and since he is fragile, he can't aford to be vulnerable at all, speacially when his attacks doesn't do that much damage to begin with
+Sidar Erdem About Oboro's chapter: you mean both versions of completing the chapter? Either way it's pretty dang boring, but like all of Live-A-Live it has some interesting secrets.
+Sidar Erdem A lot of secrets in this game are cryptic and tedious, but that's why I find them charming, lol.
I know I am weak, dammit! I can get better!
Oboro's chapter has more liberty because of multiple ways of completing it, and that kill count makes things more interesting. And Oboro is strong unlike Akira. Jeez, on the long run Oboro is one of the strongest characters.
I still remember the first time I played Akira's chapter, and I didn't know what to do on that part with all the ritual to try to wake up Buriki Daioh, and ended up going up and down that semi-infinit staircase over and over again. I just wanted to kill Akira there and go for the other chapters that were way more interesting
The only chapter I ain't fond of is Pogo's.
I had themost fun with the Robot chapter, (Which I should redo mine, since one video fucked up upon rendering.)
Akira can be pretty good if he is levelled up, that is if you did grind between some of the events and get proper equipment. HE does outside Matsu later in the game, though.
The statue is based off a Budgie, a type of Australian Parakeet, not a chicken. The birds are budgies, so I assume they were given or imported or that the city worshipped the birds and built a statue in their honour.
It should've been less Getter Robo and more Armored Core.
This chapter's plot feels like huge chunks of character development were left out of it, making it very hard for me to care about most of the characters, especially the main villains.
Seriously, there's three very different-looking dudes that are all working towards the same goal and all of them seem to have practically the same personality, to the point that they might as well have been just one main villain doing all the work.
This!
the moment when robots outclass humans(i guess megaman is proud of cube xD)
Are we going to ignore the fact that Akira is wearing Taeko’s panties?
I like how the mecha's name is probably a reference to Sentai mechas
truth be told, I love the character akira but I dislike the chapter because half the time to it doesn't even tell you WHERE TO GO
+Sidar Erdem like, I love the chapter and all, but I was so confused on where to go akira was so over leveled by the time I reached the docks (low kick and elbow Ohko'd almost everything.)
Yes! :D
The same goes for me. Akira was by far my favorite character in the game, but his chapter sometimes downright frustrated me by the lack of info on *where* to go!
Hi whoisthisgit, first, i discover your channel, it's amazing ! I'm happy to see i'm not the only one who can think about video game like that.
Second, for the Worst Level Ever, did you play Valkyria Chronicles ? I think you can talk about the Chapter 7, Battle at Barious. For a beginner of the game, this map can be quite a pain x) Continue your video !
I felt like cube was the most well-rounded character. I sort of liked Cubes arc, but I just wish there was more stuff to fight lol. But it was awesome since it sort of felt like a Sci-Fi space survival horror game in a way. But I did like that the military guy whooped that behemoths @ss and Cube kicked the A.I @ss at the same time lol.
A shame that its hard to upgrade cube in the final chapter because he is one of the best options due to his support, and unless you farm robotic parts in akira's chapter then farming them is a lot more tedious.
@@C20521Robotic Enhancements do not carry over to the final chapter.
In the not-too-distant future, next Sunday, A.D....
Did some research, Akira as a battler has one redeeming quality according to the wiki, and that is access to Shadow Image
Very strong, with massive range
Problem being? It's the second to the last skill that can be learned, needing to get to level 13
Though I've heard that getting to that level isn't really difficult, and can easily be done even at the start of the game due to enemy scaling
Once you get it though, it's pretty much probably one of the only skills you'll ever use with Akira
Does it solve all his problems? Probably not, considering I've never played it
But it should at least make things better for you
(Although the fact you need to grind to make him good should probably be an answer in itself for how bad he is)
Edit: I have now played the game
While Shadow Image is pretty strong, the charge really holds it back, considering the amount of enemies that can easily knock you out of the charge, wasting your turn
Also, at higher levels, Akira is actually pretty tanky
But while he's far from awful, he's definitely the least good out of all the protagonist
He also fills the roles that other protagonists tend to do better
Healer? Cube is tankier, and has can increase stats along with his heal
Debuffer? Debuffing mobs tends to be way more work than necessary and his debuffs aren't that strong anyways
You'll usually only ever need debuffs for bosses, and the inheritor and/or Masaru does that job way better
Even though he's technically the intended protagonist for the final chapter (because Odeo was the center statue for the boss room before you had to choose a final chapter protagonist), he's just not a good choice at all, and you'll just be stuck with him when there are much better choices (to be fair, Oboro's fast as f*** run speed pretty much convinces me without a doubt that he's the best choice for final chapter protagonist imo)
You can use Hell's and Mothers Image sometimes when you got the top gear, since it often reaches (at that point) weak crusaders. But yeah, he's entirely reliant on grinding to be made good, unlike any other character in their chapters where (if grinding is even an option) you would only do it if you were taking on an optional boss or access to a ridiculously overpowered move early on.
Have you only played the remake? Because I heard that Akira was buffed in it, while being totally mediocre in the original. I have only played the remake, and I didn't think he was as bad as people say, tho he is definitely the weakest of all protagonists.
Also, best protagonist is Lei, especially because of her interaction with Odio at the end.
@SeventhheavenDK I have played both (I wanted to play the original before I played the remake, just so I could compare them)
Akira definitely got massive buffs in the remake, and he really doesn't have a lot going for him in the original
He is, above all else, an AoE Debuffer, which isn't really a very effective role when the only time that you actually need AoE, you might as well just kill them with an AoE attack instead of wasting your time trying to debuff them, because they're generally weak enough that that would be unnecessary
Even Judgement Day, his staple move in the remake which really makes him such a great choice as a debuffer, was terrible in the original, having a low chance to inflict any of the relevant status effects for its massive recharge time, making Masaru far superior for having both bulk and fast debuffing capabilities
Akira technically has high defense, odd for a mage, but with his low HP, it doesn't make much of a difference
Shadow Image is his only saving grace, being his only move that's AoE and strong, but even then it's hindered by long recharge
With that being said, you can still use Lei while having Oboro as protagonist, his fast run speed is just pretty important to me, bonus points that he's actually a high tier character
I always thought the liquid human bit was a reference to the end of evangelion but live a live came out 4 years before.
Oh, it's a shame you don't like the anime tropes, that means most JRPGs might actually not be up your alley, most of all Tales. You might still like Vesperia, though. It's on the 360, and mostly tries to break away from anime tropes that plagued the series since its inception. I have a general love/hate relationship with the dungeon design, though, and there's one dungeon in particular that fits this series. You'll know it when you get to it.
People already said it, but I have to say it too. First, Akira (the manga and the movie) makes much less sense than this. And second, while it takes some things from Akira, it reminds me much more of Mazinger Z. Even the main character, being a jerk with a heart of gold that protect his little sibblings has more to do with Koji Kabuto, from Mazinger Z, than Tetsuo or even Kaneda, from Akira, psychic powers aside.
That said, Matsu does remind me of Kaneda.
Wait, wait... You fetch an antiques dealer to liquify your sister's dying tortoise??
Hey, at least this chapter has one of the least bothersome game over cutscenes ;)
BTW, do you know of that one fan-game called FE7x? It's not complete yet, but it's pretty cool
Damn I miss a lot in this chapter... I didn't even did the robot part and managed to get to the end and fought the boss before the final boss
You can actually skip the robot part where you have to do a hassle of requirements and I swear I did everything but didn't see any praying done what so ever so when I went back to the chikio house I progresses with the story as normally
Wait, someone awnser this for me. All the time in the beginning and everything, everyone knows he has psychic powers? Or just his sister?
He kept it to himself. His sister may have them as well. WHich could be why she is bed ridden. If you get a game over in this chapter, she will shout "BRO!"
The Tadokoros could be psychiccers.
I admit that the Mecha chapter is the most tedious and confusing from the game, i really hated that most of the time i didn't know what to do so i was forced to check every NPC from the game.
But i really liked the plot of that chapter, maybe cause i talked with everyone and started to be inmersed in the plot and Akira was not a bad protagonist for me, he's weak compared to the rest of the characters and is even a really bad healer compared to Cube but it helped me a lot on the final chapter of the game.
By the way, as far as i remember, the Mecha chapter is so different from the Akira movie, still is worth to see it.
If you get both healing accessories, one from Pogo's chapter (Fertile Charm), and the other one from Oboromaru (the one given by the maid), it doesn't really matter who is the designated healer in the party anymore. If I remember correctly one of them even cures debuffs.

"Screw you."
When game developers decide to create pointlessly long corridors/stairways in a level, then that alone makes it one of the worst ever.
I mean, that basement was giving me endless stairs flashbacks!
Stairs are everyone's worst enemy.
I'm glad im not the only person who felt this way about this chapter. I have only ever played the Switch version, but this chapter is still almost exactly the same in that one. I could barely follow the story at all (still cant really), the "humor" was not amusing to me, and several of these plot points were completely random or asinine... i quite honestly didnt give a shit about most of the other characters in this chapter outside of Akira himself and Matsu. I got lost every few minutes and had to keep using a walkthrough to figure out how to progress. Navigating the overworld is frustrating with enemies being hard to avoid, Akira being a weak fighter, and teleport randomly sending you all the way back sometimes. I think the concept and overall theme of this chapter was pretty cool, but poorly executed. This was also the 2nd chapter i ever played, and took me the longest to get through. I found it to be a total drag from start to finish, and could NOT wait to finally get this chapter overwith and move on. Akira being a pretty cool and likeable character was its only saving grace. But even after recruiting him again in the final chapter, he still turns quite underpowered compared to the others.
I also have seen Akira the movie (albeit several years ago now), there are a few similarities. But at least the movie was much more entertaining than this chapter lol
I was pulling my hair out on how tf I even progress the story in this one. Even with a walkthrough!
Oof. This chapter. The mandatoy slog of dumb dialogue, getting lost, and fetching stuff. Not to mention painful combat. And tropes for the sake of tropes. Ugh.
Only thing I like about it is the Buriki Daioh theme music.
Also nope, the movie has nothing in common with this, other than the fact that it's set in the future and focuses around psychic powers. Go check it out, Git.
I won't lie, I didn't like this chapter the more it went on. At least the music was cool, but it desperately needs more of a world and identiry outside of a parody of giant mech animes.
Really sad when whoisthisgit has a new upload but I can't watch...I want to play the game but have yet to and I don't want spoilers.
Well, at least the music is really, really good.
You mean you have to wander around aimlessly trying to find the next arbitrary trigger to progress the story? Oh boy, those are my favorite kinds of RPGs!
this chapter would've been so much better if the mecha was controlled earlier and more frequently... anyway on a side note that knight chapter amirite?
When the military are all over your city and you hear someone yell "YOUR ASS IS GRASS"
I don't think that Akira is weak. Sure, he don't deal a good amont of damages. But his attacks has a good reach and he can lowering stats of enemies very easily.
What about the part where the house is on fire and you have to go in every single door except the one you actually need in order to progress the story (which is on fire - entering all the doors makes the fire disappear)? Honestly, I don't mind a whole lot that you didn't mention it, but it was still a pretty annoying bit.
Now, I have a more pressing issue - I can't decide who to have lead the party in the final chapter... Zulo/Pogo, Yuan, Kyoto/Oboro, Coyote/Sundown, Kennet/Masaru, or Ingot/Cube. (Sorry Miko, no Teleport escaping, thanks) I know about all the shenanigans to get Coyote if I don't pick him, but I feel like I wouldn't mind enough to consider that a huge factor in the decision. So, anyone care to suggest something?
GO with Sundown. SO you don't have to peruse him later in the game.
I need to finish my LAL play as well.
All right, if you insist! Have a wonderful day!
The issue with Sundown if you don't choose him, he appears randomly in certain spots and then wanders off. I think by the fifth encounter, he will join you. It's just sporadic where he appears.
I knew that already, picked him 'cause you said to, playing the chapter as we speak :P
I named him "Hol". Most people already got the references.
No one guessed Kiryu and Majima's names.
