  • Unfortunately, although there are lots of fantastic levels and stages in video games, there are also a fair few awful ones.
Sometimes, under the wrong sort of circumstances, even perfectly okay levels can turn into absolute nightmares, as the levels from this episode will demonstrate.
I will more likely pick bad levels from games that I otherwise enjoy. These are the ones that stick out the most and can bring good games down.

As someone who has beat the game with password for only the four final levels, I can do nothing but concur that the odds are terribly stacked against you. Me and my friend (We co-oped) had to use every trick in the book for this one. Here's how we did it if anyone is interesting.
The most important thing we had to our advantage was that we had gone through most of the game not fully understanding how the neighbour survival mechanic worked. For anyone unfamiliar with this game, if a neighbour dies in one level, the number of neighbours to save in the coming levels is reduced, and replacing neighbours is very difficult. Thus, we only had to worry about a single neighbour for each level for most of the game, all with fixed locations. As such, we could skip large chunks of the stages, such as only having to kill one worm on the penultimate stage, since only one key was necessary for our route.
As for the first of the four stages, you might want to rush that one as fast as possible, due to the infuriating nature of those ants, but it turns out they hide a lot of goodies in that stage. That is, behind those trees, so you can't actually see what you're picking up or that they are even there. Add to that the tight navigation you have to do with those pesky ants and the fact that two players share the same screen and you will have a lot of coordinating and route-planning to do. I recommend just looking up the layout of the map online to find all the relevant goodies and use the bazooka to blow up a few shortcuts to skip as many ants as possible. This level is crucial if you want enough fire power for the final boss.
The second level was mostly finding an optimal route that allows you to shoot as few bazooka shots as possible, gets you to the two mandatory skull keys as fast as possible (I remember there being two with fixed position, though one is well hidden by some destructible environment and near a lumber jack, I think), allows you to pick up as much bazooka shots as possible and then lets you leave relatively unscathed. By far the easiest one if you get the route down.
For the third one we were forced to rely on spawn manipulation, by hugging the edge of the map as soon as possible, bait out one worm and then drag it as far away from the others as possible towards the east. Hard to explain, and harder to pull off; we often ended up with two of the buggers. Worth to mention is that those things have rather wonky hitboxes too. I think we mostly used water pistols because of that, since missing a bazooka shot is way too costly. Once we got the key, we made a mad dash for easily accessible resources and bailed.
The final level is one piece of work. I remember having to do quite a few tries to map out a route that gave us the most easily accessible keys without triggering too many monsters, and running from the rest. I remember planning the route around health pack pickups too, but as for the rest my memory is a bit fuzzy. As for the boss, the web can be cleared by the lawn mower, but that is only a temporary solution as he fires web faster than you can clear it. Aside from that, is was just an all out brawl, using all the ammo we had stock piled by running away from almost every single fight. What really made the difference was the beast potion at the second phase, as we managed to lock it in place somehow and pummel it into oblivion. I doubt it would have been possible except for the most hardcore without that potion.
So yeah, despite with the minimum number of neighbours to save, avoiding almost every single fight and spending quite some time picking up resources, it is an incredibly close call, as they clearly did not balance the amount of resources available properly. Was it not for the absurd health pool of the final boss, this would had been soo much easier. It's good to see that it was not just us having trouble.

To me that sums up this game perfectly. Your description of the password system is exactly how I remember it when I owned this game back in the day for my SNES. I decided to sit down and play this game from beginning to end so that I could stock up on supplies, but when I had to fight Dr. Tongue the first time, it put me in a situation where, even though I had more supplies then using a password, I didn't have enough supplies to defeat Dr. Tongue the second time. ZAMN is one of the few games that I felt the experience of playing it is was more than enough to make me happy that I didn't care that I couldn't finish it. =) Great video, BTW.

@@garuelx8627 More annoying than that is that one of the neighbors is literally impossible to save without exploits. One level has a Tourist Couple that is on the opposite corner of the map, and even with speed shoes is impossible to collect normally.
The exploit is that the tourists count as 1 neighbor, but if they transform they turn into TWO werewolves. So the only way to save them is to lure enough enemies into following you that you reach the sprite maximum and the game won't let them transform.

    • @bandicootsmwcentral2950
      @bandicootsmwcentral2950 Před 6 lety +9

Here's my tips for you guys:
If you know the best weapons to use against each enemy it become quite easy to stock weapons, the hard task is actually stock medical kits once you get to the stages with vampires.
For example: the ants die in 1 hit with the aliens gun, soda bombs are good on that evils dolls from level 3, use the wedcutter on spiders and werewolves.
On the last levels when facing the weakest enemies(zombies) try the useless items like the tomatoes and that icecream thing.
      Now for the bosses:
The bast way to kill the giant baby is use 1 monster potion or 4 pandora boxes, the worms are weak to the forks and the bazooka(but the best idea is still use a monster potion)
The spider is weak to the flamethrower which you can only get 1 on the secret hidden area of level 22 if you have at least 1 skull key unused at that point(the best way to achieve this is reach level 20 with only 2 victims left so you will use only 2 of the 3 keys).
Now you might be wondering why i said to use the the tomatoes on the zombies for the final stages? its simple: dr tongue's head boss weakness is the water pistol, so you might want to have them for the final boss, he dies pretty easy with the water pistol.
My only problem is the vampire, the chainsaw maniac and the frankstein, the chainsaw maniac takes too much time to kill with any weapon and I dont even know if its possible to kill the other two,the only thing you can do to take them out of your way for a while is freeze them for some seconds with the fire extinguisher.
But my worst problem is the vampire, its atacks are a lot hard to avoid and it takes so much health here's where all my medical kits are wasted.
Also dont use the medical kits if you have 6 lives, since 6 lives are your maximum its a better idea to die 1 time and collect a 1up instead of waste a medical kits and collect a 1up that will do nothing.

  • @punchingplayerpenguin3291

    I've beaten this before.
in level 45, many items including two monster potions are hidden behind trees. there are also a few other bazookas you can use. of course this level involves killing as few ants as possible.
    46. take the upper path with only bazookas at first, grabbing the bazooka hidden in the bush. after grabbing the first skull key, grab the bazooka you don't need bazookas for, go down and use a monster potion to punch your way to the other neighbors, making sure to grab the monster potion under the pod plant and the skull key. once only 3 neighbors remain, go back to the beginning the way you came. allow the maniac to cut the hedges in the way and try to get him caught between the meteoroid and the hedge. bazooka to the end.
    47. bazookas. get right in front of the snakeoids and fire to do up to about 3-4 hits on them and only use 2 shells. once all three are dead, finish up the level AFTER GRABBING THE MONSTER POTION BEHIND THE WALL.
    48. good luck asshole. jk. if you grabbed the artifact in level 45, use them against the vampire. trust me, you do NOT want to deal with him in the middle of the level. when you go to rescue the cheerleader hidden behind a single skull door, kill Frankenstein. i don't give a shit what anyone says, that fucker needs to die. he can stalk you through the level and make dr.tongue extremely difficult as if he wasn't hard enough already. six bazookas should do him in. if not, weed whacker him to death. for the werewolves, the forks and knives from level 47 should do the trick.
For dr.tongues spider form, use monster potions and try to hold down the attack button and stand still. this prolongs the time you have as a monster. if you run out of potions, use the weed whacker and first aid kits when necessary. for the head, plates. 20 can be found on level 47. if those run out, water pistol. thats how I won at least.
if you want, I'd like to see you try this again using these tips. you don't have to if you absoposifuckalutely don't want to.

I think only people that have played this game can truly appreciate how unfair the life bar of the final boss is haha. Ive never finished this game, most close i got was when i was a teenager and managed to get to doctor tongue. His spider form... I emptied all my supplies trying to beat him. I managed to keep only my water pistol and couple forks and wasted everything else i had. "Hah! clutch!" I thought to myself as the giant spider exploded. But then the giant head appeared... i threw the couple forks and emptied my water pistol on him... and of course he wasnt even close to dying. So i just sat there in disbelief, no ammo or potions left, let the giant head kill me and havent even gotten close to reaching that far ever again haha. Ive played it some times after that
    still :D Weirdly fun game

Longer passwords wouldn't really be practical: With over twenty weapons and items in the game (some of which, like the water pistol or the weed whacker thing, can go up to 999 ammunition), you'd need something like forty characters in the password to cover all the combinations for all levels. A better solution would be a default arsenal for each stage: For example, starting with a bunch of bazookas and monster potions (plus plenty of ammo for the weaker weapons) if you continue to Level 45. You wouldn't have your exact arsenal, but you'd be much better equipped to handle the last few stages.

    Giant Baby: 70 HP
    Snakeoid: 75 HP
Spider (Level 36): 85 HP (has a weird damage assist thing as well, so I'm not 100% sure)

The plates and silverware found in Level 47 do massive damage to the final boss, and the bazooka and cross found in Level 45 behind the trees do massive damage to the Snakeoids and Chainsaw Maniacs, as well as the Frankenstein and vampire. It's not exactly easy, but I wouldn't put in in the Impossible? category.

It’s possible. I’ve never done it. But I’ve seen people who have. My cousin and I were screwing around and told me he could beat this shit. I didn’t believe it until I saw it. He told me that he played the game extensively as a kid and knew every trick in the book. It was insane to watch. I don’t remember exactly how he did it, but it involved using almost no ammunition nor the potion. He saves the potion, the water gun ammo, the medkit and the bazookas until he absolutely needed to use them. I remember he was at like 2 health surrounded by enemies but he didn’t use the kit because he didn’t need to. He didn’t use a single bazooka in the hedgemaze level or the ant level. He also let all but 1 of the neighbors die. He knew so much about the game that he was able to manipulate it to put the neighbor in different spots. For example: In the worm level, the 1 neighbor appeared directly in front of him, allowing him to beat the level in seconds. He’s not a speedrunner. Just a big nerd. I can barely beat the final levels normally. He can beat it with the password. It was insane to watch.

You got incredibly lucky, holy shit.
These giant worms don't actually have that much HP apparently, but they do restore HP whenever they hit you, so if you trade hits a fight with them can seriously drag on.
Also, apparently Pandora's box inflicts less damage than the watergun against the final boss' head form, which was something that was found out... Well, not exactly not too long ago, but certainly not too long ago in regards to how old this game is at least.
Edit: Even save-states might not be such a good idea, after all save-states perfectly replicate your game-state along with the current RNG and everything when they're loaded, but worst of all they retain your neighbour-count, as you have said, not having many neighbours makes the game easier, but also as you have said, not having any neighbours leads to a game over, and neighbours in this game might very well die nearly off-screen.

Does the end boss have an ideal weapon to use? I remember this game being fairly clever with the weapons being suited for some foes but not others. Games with passwords that left you unarmed for the level were all to common in that era. Only games that were based upon collecting items to progress like Metroid or Goonies 2 had codes that gave items as well generally. This game would have been better if you could quickly pick up enough weapons on the code started levels.

if you manage to defeat one of those Giant Baby bosses, they turn into regular babies, which count as neighbors to save. that's the only way to get extra neighbors. only 2 or 3 in the game.
and there's a really bad level that's horribly frustrating even playing from the beginning...i forget the number, but...anyway, that level has lots of those "evil dolls", which WILL kill any neighbor they see, and because of the level design, you are forced to walk through long winding corridors to reach the neighbors, making it take a long time to reach the ones you can see, and the dolls can spawn anywhere on the screen, like, for example, RIGHT next to the neighbor on the other side of the wall from you! unless you have a lot of those "soda can" weapons in reserve, and are quick enough to toss them over the walls at the evil dolls, they WILL kill ALL of the neighbors, making you lose the game even if you have 20 lives left!

As good as ZAMN was, it kinda lost its focus as the game progressed which led to this issue with the password system. Earlier levels had scattered pickups which forced players to typically be on the run unless cornered or overrun. Almost as if ZAMN was a precursor to the Resident Evil series.
But as the game progressed monsters became more of an annoyance than a threat and the tone completely changed as it became yet another shooter with mandatory boss fights. This led to the problems you describe where levels were designed with minimal pick ups but the objectives required you to have loads of ammo and quite often made it near impossible to progress.

    • @Teknanam
      @Teknanam Před rokem

Fun facts. The first 20 levels were the only ones that were specially designed and focus tested. Everything else was basically padding. Even then, the game was meant to end at level 36 (hence why you fight Dr. Tongue there). But they ended up with some extra dev time, so they made more levels and attempted a more climatic ending with Dr. Tongue becoming a 2 stage boss.
What really hurt game though was that they didn't have the budget for cartridges with battery saves and didn't want to have crazy long passwords, so they just settled with the current short ones that leave you screwed in resources. They tried testing the password points themselves to make sure the game was still beatable, but they are still the developers so they would know how to exploit the game to beat it in the worst circumstances. Focus testing would've shown them how bad these points were, but alas.
