Also when you come back in later stages of design to make higher difficulties you can simply modify the enemy growth rates or lvs instead of essentially designing a new map. Also i doubt any fe game was ever play tested past hard mode but that probably has to do with maintaining a budget. Play testing is mostly for quality control and less so much focused on the game play itself unless it is a glaring issue.

      @ResurgentRaven Před 3 lety +45

      It was satisfying for me to hear him tear into the Black Knight fight from FE 9, considering that it was the game I just finished on Hard Mode 2 weeks ago and Chapter 27 was even harder than Endgame.
      I didn't expect him to actually put it at number 1, but the way I got stomped in hard mode, even with a nearly maxed out Ike with all his important stats capped (strength, speed, skill, defense and HP, as well as s rank in swords) was just annoying as the Black Knight activated Luna EVERY. SINGLE. GODFORSAKEN. TURN. I couldn't even go on the offense because he got Luna twice and 2KOd me.
      I shrugged it off as a meager case of luck, but then I went through the whole map again, and the same thing happened.
      So, 3rd times the charm, went in and finally managed to get two aethers back to back and defeated him.

      @@ResurgentRaven Just saying, Wrath + Nihil is probably the way to go. Nihil will ignore Luna and you're not killing the Burger King without Wrath, and if you're on Difficult (and not Maniac) Mode, I doubt anyone else needs Nihil. I mean, do generics really get Occult skills? You also want to use the Wrath scroll on Ike anyway because of Wrath + Resolve for the Final Chapter. The fact that without save states you have to replay the entire chapter 27 is total BS though. Replaying the chapter and the time limit are the only things really wrong with it tbh. The battle itself is fine. It's easily beatable if you had more turns.

    • @ResurgentRaven
      @ResurgentRaven Před 3 lety +1

      @@ametaslave7314 Wrath + Nihil is still problematic if you get RNG screwed, since, like I said before, the Black Knight can get double Luna.
      Plus, unless my math is off, you need 2 perfect wraths and a normal hit due to BK's Renewal skill. Within two Lunas, Ike is dead without proper healing.
      Which brings me to my next point. Granted you don't get many healers until you promote your mages (because what idiot would promote their mage to use knives instead of staves?). However, having to rely on Mist's healing only is rather annoying especially if she died early on.
      Point is that, without certain skills, there is no physical way to actually knock out the black knight within the turn limit (which is six turns btw) and even with certain skills, having to rely on pure RNG to win is just appalling.
      Also, my Ike had only Aether in the endgame and not once did he come close to dying except against Ashnard, and I had five healers by that point, so I wasn't anywhere near as worried about the RNG.
      Wrath Resolve is a better way since they can be used to easily ORKO most foes with Ike easily, but the Occult Skills in PoR aren't as deadly as in Radiant Dawn.
      Sol and Deadeye deal any extra damage,
      Flare doesn't heal.
      Colossus might as well be (in Feh's terms) a Moonbow with a 10 cooldown).
      Pretty much the only few occults worth learning are Aether (Ike), Lethality (Volke), Luna (Halberdier and General), and Astra (Mia Zihark and Lucia).
      And out of these 4, Aether is still the best. Most characters can make perfect usage out of Wrath + Resolve (at least, those that have the skill circle to use it), but only Ike can use Aether.

      Yeah, I honestly think that Berserk Rhea at the end of Silver Snow is my least favorite boss of three houses. Not for the miracle mechanic, that was never a problem with me. It's the stupid perma staggering blow mechanic. It makes it straight up impossible to whittle away at her barrier and forces you to alpha strike her if you want any hope of dealing meaningful damage to her.

    I think the real salt-in-the-wounds for the Black Knight fight is that you get the Resolve Scroll DURING that Chapter 27. Not before, or even after, but that exact chapter.
    Meaning, you don't get to visit the Base between chapters where you can assign Skills. Meaning you can't assign Resolve to Ike prior to fighting the Black Knight, but you can have it SITTING IN YOUR HANDS. The Wrath + Resolve combo is a great way to take on Ashnard in the final chapter, but noooooooo. The developers just couldn't let you actually have consistent fun against the Black Knight doing the same method. It would have been the perfect fight to really feel the combo showcase Ike's growth to his dad's killer, too.
    What a missed opportunity.

    Plot-wise, the Burger King fight kinda makes sense. Assuming you beat him and Radiant Dawn happens, he reveals that he decided to go easy on you. The only reason Ike wins is because the Burger King decided to let him win, so in-game, that translates to an rng chance that he lets you win.

    • @anaven27
      @anaven27 Před 3 lety +138

      I mean, that's pretty cruel on Ike. The reason Burger King does that (at least, by the localization) is because he saw a glimpse of Greil's swordplay in Ike, and wanted to fight him when he reached his peak. If he doesn't let Ike win by that reasoning, then it means he literally didn't consider Ike's skills worth anything.
      But maybe that's justice for all the Ikes in the world who adamantly refused to level strength ever and tink on the Burger King.

    • @Robin_Robout
      @Robin_Robout Před 3 lety +68

      I mean that doesn't even really make sense. Going easy on someone is a conscious effort. If he truly planned on letting Ike win to get stronger, he would just let Ike win to get stronger.
      The better way to have the Black Knight go easy on you using game mechanics would be removing some of the stats he had in previous fights, being something a shrewd player would notice. Or getting rid of Luna, as if the BK doesn't want to fuck Ike up, maybe he shouldn't use the technique that can fuck ANYBODY up with no remorse.
      Only way the way the fight plays out makes sense is if BK had a two faced esque demeanor, where he left things to chance or flipped coins/drew cards to determine his next move. As it stands, BK feels more like you get lucky enough to whomp him and then next game he's like "Nice try idiot, didn't count" despite him swinging with intent to kill using Luna.

    • @flamegeyser9781
      @flamegeyser9781 Před 3 lety +46

      In the Japanese version, Ike beating the Burger King in PoR was because of a "warp powder malfunction" which left Ike fighting a shade of the man. There are so many things wrong with that it hurts, so they changed it to the BK letting Ike win. It sort of explains why the BK doesn't seem to be going easy on him, but is still weaker overall. That said, the RD version of the BK has better stats all around, but so does Ike. No surprise that he had no chance when Ike fully matured I guess.

    Also, Fun Fact about the Black Knight: Ike's Strength cap is 26. 26 Str + Ragnell's 18 Mt = 44 Atk - BK's 35 Def = 9 damage. If Ike hits during both phases he'll do 18 damage and BK will recover 6 for a net 12 damage - exactly enough to kill him on the 5th turn even without Aether if Ike can land all 10 attacks. Of course, on average Ike will have 20+ skill by that point so it's likely 2 of those hits trigger Aether anyways and Aether striking twice with the second hit negating 50% Def significantly cuts back on the amount of hits required to beat BK.

My Ike isn't very strong and I just don't want to continue with the play through because it just feels so bad that I can't defeat the Black Knight because that's the whole point of the game. About the balck knight fight: Yes it is luck based, yes it is unfair to players, especially on hard mode, and yes it is quite punishing to die, but I think that that's the point, it was designed like that. The way I always interpret it is to show that Ike, no matter how much he trains, he cannot truly suprass the black knight, it's still too soon for him, he still needs to train more, it's a decision the game designers made voluntarily since even at his max Ike still has a very tough time throughout the fight. This is even addressed in RD, where if Ike fight the black knight in part 3, the black knight tells Ike that he sees that he wasn't ready yet, and it is shown through the fight, you could call this a forced explanation, but I think it made sense since ike's stats will always be inferior to the black knight, and i think that's the point. They understood it was hard, and they made this boss optional by giving you an escape route. I think the main problem of that fight was the time limit, it didn't have to be there and it really destroyes the fight. that's the only part of that fight that the player has no control over, other than that? luna, renewall, the enemy reinforcements, these complications are manageable if the player handles himself well, like for example bringing elixirs or trying to create the best chances to win. I think that's the real problem, without the time limit this fight would be MUCH more managable. And it does feel forced to put a time limit on such an important fight

    • @Ethan-nl2wg
      @Ethan-nl2wg Před 3 lety +23

      I agree 100% instead of a time limit they should have given a specific tile you could step on to flee and it’s not fun to play but for story reasons I think it makes sense in a way it can be more satisfying in radiant dawn where you finally get to fight him and beat for real

      @@domc8089 I agree! Actually I belive Ashnard to be the worse of the two. Story aside yes Black Knight is an unfun rng fiesta but he is optional, you dont have to fight him, unlike Ashnard whom you have to defeat.
      Unlike most of the unfair bosses Ashnard isnt unfair in the way that he has killer weapon or random procs or too much dodge, however also unlike other bosses his rng isnt selfcontained in his map, rather his rng is the entire game. Every single time Ike gains a level you roll whether he will be strong enough to kill Ashnard. Got RNG screwed? No problem you can always use the old and reliable Tit- oh wait you cant. Because for some god forsaken reason only Ike and Ena (and Nasir but if you have Nasir your ike is strong enough) can deal damage to Ashnard. And Ena isnt very good, without help of broken Wrath and Resolve she cant really do anything.
      To add the insult to the injury the laguz royals show up after you have beaten him already once, and if you managed then you probably can bully him twice.
      To conclude yes BK fight is very bad but at least its optional and not required to beat the game.

    19:13 This is actually untrue. Medeus has 50 ATK, meaning with capped HP, (60) and 21 or higher DEF, you can survive Medeus while being doubled. This means that a capped Marth can safely enter combat with Medeus without it being the killing blow. Though actually doing so is rather pointless.

    • @lefthandedscout9923
      @lefthandedscout9923 Před 2 lety +3

      Now you might be correct, but if we use a binomial distribution to calculate the chance of Marth's 20% Defense growth (yes, you read that correctly, 20%) getting up to 17, which if you give him both Dracoshields you get in the game, is the minimum needed for Marth to survive against Medeus (oh, and by the way, Marth can't get to 60 HP without both Seraph Robes, as well, so you'd have to give him those too for this!), you get a result of between 4 and 5%. So around one in twenty two players will get a Marth that has the Defense to stand up to Medeus - and that doesn't even take into account possibly not getting Marth to level 30, or not getting Marth's HP capped, or missing one of the Dracoshields or Seraph Robes. I think anyone will agree that isn't reliable odds.

    • @Aeddy35
      @Aeddy35 Před 2 lety +1

      @@lefthandedscout9923 LOL chapter 24 secret shop, you are uninformed. The cost opportunity argument isn't really valid either as Marth is a poor investment, It's merely a possibility you could do. Also, growth rates in SD function differently than every other game. If you fail to get a stat via level up your next level will raise the base growth by 10%, this keeps repeating until you have gained a point in that stat. This means that Marth's defense growth will keep increasing by 2% until he gains defense.

    • @lefthandedscout9923
      @lefthandedscout9923 Před 2 lety +2

      @Iroboke regarding the latter point, I was under the impression that shadow dragon only had this "gain growths thing" if you got no level up on ALL your stats, as a similar system to the GBA games rerolling level ups entirely. If there's something you can link me to about that, then I'd like to see it.
      Regardless, if you needed Marth to level up that many times (obviously, as you said, without Chapter 24's secret shop, although I feel it's fair to disinclude that as that is literally invisible and wouldn't be known to an average player even if they beat Normal mode first, and if you're looking up stuff to find that you're better off just using the well known Aum Warp strategy discussed in the video instead) then you have to get at least 1 in 3 Defense level ups, which means your Defense growth will average at 24% at best over Marth's 29 levels. I don't think this improves your odds much, unless I'm having a math fail.

    As much as I hate Boldo in Chapter 2 on FE4, I think the next boss, MacBeth, is even worse. With 23 defense, pavise, a leadership star, and good enough offensive stats to threaten your magic-users, he is actually really difficult if you fail to get the armorslayer from the villages mentioned in the video. Yeah, you can also "star" your weapon by getting 50 kills to also help bypass his defenses, but this is not something a first-time player will know to do unless they do their homework.

    • @Mekkkah
      @Mekkkah  Před 3 lety +5

      I don't think MacBeth is as bad as Boldo because there is no rush in killing him and his 2-range is weaker (Javelin instead of Steel Bow). What he adds in defense he lacks in resistance so you can Light Brand him with Ethlin. And because of the lack of a time constraint, you have more time to set up something like a lover or sibling critical on him. He does have a 8% higher Pavise rate though which is super annoying. Think of that entire Boldo segment as a shoutout to all the Pavise enemies in FE4.

    This is by far the best fire emblem top 10 I’ve seen in terms of quality and information. Please do more in this format!

    I've recently taken up playing through FE9, so I was watching through, nodding my head at the FE11 early game bosses, and watching out to see if I had anything to be worried about in the upcoming chapters. Nearing the end of it, I was a bit relieved that FE9 hadn't come up at all. And then disaster struck.

    35:48 I think, and don't quote me on this, but it's worse than negligible. Several weapons in PoR seem to grant crit immunity and Alondite is one of them. (Ashnard's personal weapon and the Laguz Royals' weapons I think are the others) Wrath strangely bypasses crit immunity and I'm not sure why. My theory is that these weapons lower your crit to 0 before Wrath's +50 crit is applied.

    The Fire Emblem Warriors music was a real banger with all those heavy layered, thick, guitars. I find it interesting how they are able to blend orchestral instruments with the heavier modern guitar music. Also, no one can pronounce falchion correctly. Not even Matt Mercer.
    My first FE game was Fire Emblem Sacred Stones, and my God people say its easy, and they aren't wrong, but I had a false impression of how easy it is. Sure you can solo with Seth, but there is a lot to know first and lookout for. Honestly, my biggest gripes were me getting screwed over by bad rng. Whenever I needed to keep npcs alive. One of the enemy myrmidons got a 1% crit... And for the final boss, when you have to kill the big dragon thing, I had to restart the chapter because I needed additional regalia wielding units and the two I had weren't good enough by themselves.

    In my case the hardest was Henning, becuase I only had 3 useful units. Lugh could hit him but he mostly was about to die. Rutger was a level 12 mirimidon yet he did like 5 damage and didnt double. The only unit I could deal damage was a promoted Dieck, which was a lv3 Hero, but the fight took like 12 turns

    What about the monster boss in Marianne’s Paralogue in FE3H

    • @renren5660
      @renren5660 Před 3 lety +2

      imo, the boss itself is not too hard to be killed, unlike those 3 saints dragon who have dragon skin and miracle, the wandering beast is easy. But if I include the map, yeah that paralogue is annoying fog map + phantom + 20++ beasts, additionally, marianne's starting position is so bad. My strategy for that map is fight the boss as soon as possible after successfully rescue marianne, reclassing marianne into flier also help her survivalbility chance.

    Honestly, if the Archanea games have another remake, they should let Marth promote to Lodestar and have his caps at 30. (For design, Shadow Dragon could be the Warriors Lodestar class, and Mystery of the Emblem could be Legendary Marth's design.)
