      I love Lyn 😻
She's such a wholesome person, thrown into a pointless war she had no interest in.
To her friends, she is kind, caring and warm-hearted.
To strangers, she's respectful but distant.
She works hard to not fight, but if you force her to ... she reveals that she is one of the most dangerous sword users you're ever going to encounter.
She's so well written that I didn't even realize she's objectively not that great, because you WANT to use her. Pretty amazing writing, honestly.
FE7 was probably the best way to introduce the series to new players.

One of the big things for me against her is her comparison to swordmasters. While their stats are similar, Lyn is missing out on that big crit bonus they get that helps their damage output a lot.

    • @Mekkkah
      @Mekkkah  Před 2 lety +57

Definitely! Lyn compensates a little bit with the Mani Katti's 20 crit, but it doesn't hold a candle to the Killing Edge or the +30% crit from Rutger. So she does rely on effective or divine weaponry to get the proper damage output sometimes.

This is a great exploration on how much a game reflects the units within it. It tends that newer people don't quite understand the "meta" of a given FE game, so they tend to not understand the whys of how certain characters are good or bad, and this highlights those whys beautifully.

Especially when the game doesn't give them any reason to really care. I've played through FE7 a bunch of times using characters that everyone says are bad like Lyn and Rebecca and using them doesn't make the game hard. You can win this game with just about any combination of characters as long as you understand the other systems in play and how to use them.

I feel like an interesting follow-up experiment to this if you wanted to do something else similar would be swapping an entire cast. Like, what if all the characters from FE8 were replaced with FE7 characters? How would their usefulness change in a different game? Kind of like reverse recruitment does, it shows off how much of a unit's value is from their situation and the game around them rather than their raw stats.

  • @oddskymikha8185
    @oddskymikha8185 Před 2 lety +111

My major gripes with Lyn is on a conceptual level. In this game with 3 main characters, you have at base 2 who use swords and one who uses axes. Wouldn't it make more sense if each of them used a different weapon of the weapon triangle ? So that they would feel unique, so that you'd have a solid core of units that can deal with most threats ?
Really, if we wanted to be consistent, Eliwood should have started with lances and upon promotion, got sword weapon ranks so that he could use the lengendary blade. That would give Lyn the mandatory role of sword-locked lord but at least she would crit a lot more than most, making her a bit more memorable. When it comes to her promotion, I feel like she should have been a ranger from fe8, with access to a mount, swords and bows, which would have made her very unique in Fe7, not to mention it would be in line with her Saccean background.
But hey, can't really change the past and it's become a staple in this franchise that all main characters use a sword and nothing else (aside of a few exceptions).
EDIT: Wow, like a flipping idiot, I forgot that the "ranger" from FE8 already exists in FE7 as the Nomadic Trooper. Really shows which game I played most, heh.
My point still stand tho, either give Lyn a horse or give her the bonus crit sword masters get, I mean good lord, she's clearly supposed to be a myrmidon and just because she gets bows the developpers were like, "can't give her more crit, would be unbalanced"; well so are paladins with 8 moves, super good stats and access to the entirety of the weapon triangle.

I get that the games can only be so generous with starting stats, but Lyn always felt especially disappointing when we're expected to believe this is a pure survivalist Sacaean forced to live largely on her own and train on her own with little aid. Florina, a timid but legitimate Pegasus Knight of a prestigious realm, counts on her skill and resourcefulness as well as her courageous demeanor whenever threats popped up.
Lyn really feels like the type to have at least an extra half a boost item's effect in every stat of hers than what she actually starts out with, along with the "Afa's Drop"'s worth in growths added to assure her strong points don't get RNG screwed and her weaker stats have an extra point or two longterm on average to keep her from losing her momentum. She really should be a pretty robust woman if Lundgreen thought plain dwellers are such savages worth his irrational ire and Rath was considered "one of the good ones" by a noble that didn't take kindly to their kind except his exceptional skill and leadership. Instead her starting stats are way worse than PRINCE Zephiel's as an NPC.

It seems like Lyn's major problem stems from late promotion. Cause she was having trouble even in the early game of FE6, but it wasn't until she got the huge boost of the Blade Lord promotion that she was able to begin to develop into a better unit.

    • @lenlimbo

The speed bad rng didn't help either. That's actually the first time I've seen a speed screwed Lyn. Every time I've played Blazing Blade, she was MUCH faster than Mekkah's Lyn in Binding Blade. I mean, I knew it was posible, but it is the first time I've seen it. Given, I like her, so I tend to give her the Afa's drop, so she ALWAYS maxes speed for me, but even prior to that she always has maxed her speed while a pre-promote.

Really, I think the issue with Lyn's support partners being kinda wack is funny, because one of Lyn's best traits in vanilla FE7 is that it's very difficult to get a team where she can't support anyone. If you wanted it fully, you could have it look something like...
    - Roy for Eliwood
    - Lilina for Hector
    - Shanna or Thea for Florina
    - Shin for Rath
    - Allen for Kent

After watching this video, some of you might be wondering: What about FE8? How well would Lyn work there?
Well, good news! You can find that out for yourself: Eirika and Lyn have nearly identical bases and growths.
    Lyn's (Lyn Mode) Bases:
    HP 16 | Atk 4 | Skl 7 | Spd 9 | Lck 5 | Def 2 | Res 0 | Con 5 | Mov 5 | Aid 4
    Eirika's Bases:
    HP 16 | Atk 4 | Skl 8 | Spd 9 | Lck 5 | Def 3 | Res 1 | Con 5 | Mov 5 | Aid 4
    Lyn's Growths:
    HP 70% | Atk 40% | Skl 60% | Spd 60% | Lck 55% | Def 20% | Res 30%
    Eirika's Growths:
    HP 70% | Atk 40% | Skl 60% | Spd 60% | Lck 60% | Def 30% | Res 30%
The Mani Katti also shares its weapon effectiveness targets (horses and knights) with Eirika's Rapier. Eirika is just Lyn trying to sneak her way into another game.
    Bonus:
    Lyn's Promotion Bonuses:
    Bow Rank: D
    HP +3 | Atk +2 | Skl +2 | Spd +0 |Def +3 | Res +5 | Con +1 | Mov +1
    Eirika's Promotion Bonuses:
    Sword Rank: +70 wexp
    HP +4 | Atk +2 | Skl +2 | Spd +1 | Def +3 | Res +5 | Con +2 | Mov +2
    Movement Type: Mounted
Admittedly, the Mov, Canto, and Weapon Type differences after promo are actually somewhat significant (as is Eirika's lategame Prf weapon, Sieglinde), but their stat gains from promoting are still scarily similar and both Eirika and Lyn both have promotions that come relatively late into the game.

Will say that mani katti is way better that rapier higher crit, and damage makes it supior Erika is at her worst when she can't contribute, and that is a lot of times when she can't. Lyn would be able to contribute at the very least in offence. Erika also having a horse and better weapon I think is a moot point toward her favor. Movement for her is just speeding her ability to get herself killed or seize faster but you could rescue her instead. But her promotion also makes this more difficult. sigline makes her able to contribute to a combat like once or twice it isn't steller and your ch 16+ for this to be relevant vs the better mani katti. And Lyn would get range making her able to contribute safer while being easy rescued vs Erika.
Now they probably are remarkably similar in the midgame where each of their weaknesses shine throughout.

@@DiogoJ1 I mean there are plenty of ways to make the game more difficult, from increasing enemy growths and such. Disallowing grinding and such not using Seth, etc. You can be surprised what kind of curbs the game can do as soon as you try to not snowball the game like it wants you to do.
It also is meant to be replable vs many emblem games before it, fe6 can be a slog to get through because it's so long and difficult. Fe8 due to the different premotions and and ease of difficulty that still ranks pretty high as formontis isn't impossible but his ai can screw a player on a odd chance.
Difficulty also doesn't do anything for games if your going to reset anyways so long maps and difficulty lined with rng can make you reset a the map taking several hours. Fe8 has at most three to four maps that are that long without playing optimally. So restarting isn't even that punishing.

Not only that, the song "Hubris" is used on what's basically Xianghua's (and Mitsurugi's) stage (at least on the character profile mode), so I found that kind of detail nice.

Good to see Lyn putting in work :3 You just know if FE7 ever gets remade, the designers are hyper buffing the gal given her Heroes popularity. But I think what this exercise demonstrates is, Lyn is a flawed character in a rather unfortunate circumstance in FE7. While still flawed in 6, her qualities as a combat unit get to shine a little more. My hope is that they wouldn't go overboard and make Lyn some solo army badass that invalidates the others based solely on popularity, and rather they take the time to explore unique gameplay tweaks to make her a fun option that isn't busted.

Another issue of lyn is that her death is a game over, which isn't a big deal if you're planning to reset when a unit dies, but if you don't you really don't want to risk her. That makes her even worse as a dodge tank because the weakness of dodge tank is that they can just die if you're unlucky which is fine you'll usually avoid those situations but if you're in a very bad position you might take some risk which will payoff more often than not. But if the cost of bad luck is failing the chapter you can't really take the risk and might leave a unit who could have survived left to die to ensure lyn does not die.
This isn't as much a problem with a character like hector because more defensive tanks are more stable and predictible in how much they can take.

I usually train only Sain, and by the time I get to the final Lyn chapter, right before she captures the castle where Lundgren is, I have Sain promote. I mean any classic game into a modern one, because of the power creep growths have received.
      Besides that.
FE 6 Marcus is probably the most notable.
6 Marcus has pretty bad overall stats, but what he has going for him is early game accuracy. Other Jagans are helpful early, but FE 6 specifically has Marcus being nearly essential because of the accuracy.
Outside of FE 6, he's just a very very anemic Jagan.
      Athos is another interesting case.
Athos is a weird unit in the context of FE 7, because he CAN reliably beat the final boss by himself, unlike a lot of Gotohs that actually can't, they just help a lot.
Because Athos can, this has knock on effects for your team building.
"Growth" units like Raven become worse, because you don't need their late game performance for the game's ultimate stat challenge, which means Athos is performing for your army before you get him. You can just coast on units that are already good, like Marcus, Hawkeye, and Pent, without concern for how you're going to deal with the final boss.
However, the Fire Dragon isn't especially strong on the whole, and Athos is largely scaled to it.
In any other game, Athos performs like a normal Gotoh. Put Athos in Path of Radiance, and you still have to have an answer for Ashnard.
And then any thief plopped into a game with buyable keys.

I feel like Lyn's story (aka the beginning of the game) is meant to teach the player the mechanics and the importance of the lord's survival. If you look at it from this perspective, it makes much more sense when the player is first playing FE7.

All that maybe needs to exist now is an "older" Lyn design specifically for this romhack

i think lyn would be find if they didn't nerf the troops or Removed the 3x effectiveness. This seems to bee an issue with FE7 Localization then anything.
