Top 10 WORST Supporter Cards of All Time

  • Ever since their introduction in Expedition in 2002, Supporter cards have played a key role in basically every deck since. Often they’re used to draw or search out cards to supply a player with resources to play the game, but Supporter cards can also have a large variety of other effects that either help the player that uses them, or disrupt their opponent. Supporter cards are powerful Trainer cards that can only be used once per turn.
    However, just like Pokémon, not all Supporter cards are up to par with the rest that are released alongside them, by either being weaker or worse versions of Supporter cards that already exist, or because their interactions are too hard to pull off to be considered worth playing.

    As someone that knows nothing of the modern day Pokemon TCG, but is very familiar with the ruleset in the Gameboy Game, it's weird seeing a card like Misty's Water Command be called useless when when Venasaur's Energy Trans PokePower in that game is so incredibly broken. it's basically a less restrictive version of this Misty card , and You can literally use it to transfer energy off of pokémon that are at risk of dying so that you always have energy cards to attack with. It literally just lets you conserve your resources.
    I take it the game has changed a lot since then lol

    • @Chiffonaise
      @Chiffonaise Před rokem +5

      Moving attached Energy isn't a bad effect. Misty's Water Command only as playable as the Pokémon it supports, and they are apparently not very good or have poor synergy together.
      A more generic version of a "moving attached Energy" effect is Energy Switch, an Item card that was released in Aquapolis in 2003. It can only move 1 of any type of Basic Energy. This is a kind of evergreen card that has never been allowed to rotate since its inception and has seen some amount of success in every format over the years.
      Out of the big 3 TCGs, I think the Pokémon TCG is the game that has changed the least from its inception. Most of the cards that form the core of modern competitive decks are remixes of previous designs with minor stat tweaks, and modern decks are often piloted similarly to decks from the past. Power creep mainly bumps stats like HP and damage, while the power level of effects don't really change much.
      Things like Energy Trans Venusaur and Rain Dance Blastoise can still be viable in the current environment given the right circumstances. While the current iteration of "Energy Trans" has not seen success, the current iteration of "Rain Dance" is pretty good. There will be a new Baxcalibur releasing in the next set, and it has a functionally identical Rain Dance Ability. Even in 2023, unlimited Energy acceleration from the hand is good (lol) and this Baxcalibur forms the basis of a new competitive archetype that has seen some success in Japan.

    Erika was reprinted in 2019 so that the previous Erika card couldn't be used in the "Unlimited" format as an item card.
    The ruling was that cards that were printed as "Trainers" back before Supporters, Items etc. came about would be considered Item cards in the Unlimited format, unless that card had a mechanically identical re-release as a Supporter, in which case it would have to be played as a Supporter.

      Juggler was a good card though. At the time (2002) discarding cards was very difficult, so being able to target discard your energy to draw 5 cards was very good in the right context (such as in feraligator decks that wanted to discard energy). In 2003 it would see even more play after the rotation of Cleffa put an even greater importance on supporters. Even in the next year 2004 juggler still had some relevance in a few decks that had an heavy emphasis on discarding energy cards specifically.
      Marys impulse was pretty awful but I suppose its at the very least better then most of the cards on the list (after all if you high rolled you could draw a lot of cards).

    A card I feel deserved a mention is Mary's Impulse. It seems like it could be good at first. Flip a coin until you get tails, then draw 2 cards for each heads you flipped. Problem is, the whole card is luck based, and right off the bat you have a 50% chance of your one Supporter for the turn doing literally nothing. If you get just one heads, you basically just played Mom's Kindness, which we've established isn't very good, if you get 2 heads, its only a little bit better than cards like Hau, Hop, and Barry. Any beyond that and yeah, it becomes really good. But having to 3 heads in a row for the card to be really good feels a bit ridiculous.
    Also, something that I find kinda funny is the fact that the original Professor Oak card was reprinted to be a Supporter, but they also added the effect that it immediately ends your turn after its played, making the fact that its a Supporter a bit redundant.

    i don't ever remember playing any of these cards, but did get very upset when they made Erika a supporter card.
    this card was actually quite good in gen 1, as it allowed decks like Haymakers to draw through their deck quicker.
    also, if your opponent thought they were being clever by drawing lots of cards too, you could just use Imposter oaks revenge, or do what i used to do, and gamble of "rockets secret machine: Tickling Machine", and give your opponent a zero card hand, and forcing them to draw 7 new cards with imposter professor oak, then mill them out with Fossil Moltres!

    When you see a card like Cedric Juniper or Swordward being in the format alongside a clearly strictly better Supporter, it becomes obvious that the designer thought the designs were fun but absolutely did not want them to ever become competitively viable. Imagine if you actually had to memorize every Pokémon's height to be able to compete in tournament play?

    My favorite "bad" supporter is Piers. Mahone is always ragging on Piers, but I use it in my Galarian Weezing deck,, where it's just fine, and I'm thinking of putting it into my Durant deck because for some reason, I can never find the Energy to actually do anything, and it's the only way to tutor special Energy. Everything else is just basic Energy.

    A couple of comments here:
    For Erika at number 3, she really needed to be printed just to remove the item form of her from Unlimited. She, from my point of view, wasn't intended to be competitive in any format.
    As for Imakuni, yeah. The card is a joke, but there is a theoretical situation that becoming confused is a positive. If you are Asleep or Paralyzed, you can't retreat. However, gaining the Confusion status, removes Asleep and Paralysis. This isn't good enough for the card to be anything but a joke, but it is something.

    I actually feel like Here Comes Team Rocket has a place in GLC format. Yes, Town Map works for only you, but I saw people talking about how that allows your opponent to play more aggressively since THEY know some of the resources you're trying to go for. HCTR puts both players on the same level, so it doesn't immediately put your opponent into that sort of panicked aggro state. It's still not amazing by any means, but it DOES have a place.
    Misty's Water Command on the other hand doesn't even have a situational use in GLC. GLC still lets you use Deluge Blastoise. That just straight up kills ANY sort of need you'd have for MWC.

    I'm not as up to date with this as I am with yugioh but i got back into it when I got the zeraora structure deck for cristmas and thought i could play my custy 2018 ex deck against it but no that zeraora deck has some of the most op draw cards I've ver seen plus a card that can always easily search out its ace, I can't comlete with that with my miscellaneous assembly of older cards. Now I'm trying to find the time to rework my custy deck so it's not as ass because for some reason teenage me gave this bitch 3 energy types when the only electric cards it had were preevos I could easily switch out for steel types.

  • @TeaIngyer
    @TeaIngyer Před rokem

    Teeechnically "Imakuni?" can be used to confuse your own Hisuian Electrode V to do additional damage. It's an extremely inefficient way to do it, and is only possible in Expanded format, and takes up your supporter for the turn, and many other cards accomplish the same result more efficiently, also the card Windup Arm that's a staple for the deck doesn't protect from Confusion.
    but
    TECHNICALLY
    Imakuni? is the most broken card ever printed as it technically combos with a card printed in a much later format.
    I'ma gonna put 4 copies into my cube.

    Personally, Bill from HGSS and Erika from CEC are top picks for me on bad supporters since they rectroactively nerf their older copies in unlimited.
    As a newer card, I'd nominate Brandon. In the modern sets, getting down to one for the effect of OG Colress is just incredibly bad. Not sure if it makes T10 tho since a lot of the ones you put on here were that bad.
    Also Mom's Kindness was meant for a family set in Japan, so I give it a little slack. Just a little.

  • @shima6917
    @shima6917 Před rokem

    I personally disagree with Erika being at spot 3. Even though she's horrible in most decks, some mill decks benefit greatly from the consistency she provides. In my experience, usually your opponent draws about 1-2 cards, which is still better than nothing. And even if they decline, you still draw three cards yourself which makes it fine in the worst case (in these niche decks). In fact, without Erika, the mill deck I do play would take a lot longer to do it's thing, and the win rate would probably have even dropped a tad. Since it's pretty good in these circumstances, I think it should outrank cards like Misty's water command, which is just bad no matter what.
